Student Achievement: Congratulations to all students who achieved NCEA excellence last year. It was wonderful to recognise students and their families during our Excellence Evening held earlier in the year. Staff continue to work hard on improving teaching practice and this is certainly being reflected in our overall results. Property improvements: As part of our long term property planning we have been given approval to begin a schedule of building refurbishment. It is an important financial contribution that allows the school to provide many extras that are not funded by the Ministry of Education. In short, without it we would not be able to offer some school programmes, nor provide the essential technology that is expected. We continue to be an outstanding education provider but this can only be sustained with our parent support. Author Visit

‘Boys Who Read Succeed’ was the message from New Zealand author David Riley to the Year 10 boys’ English SIE class. A passionate advocate of the power of reading, David is the author of several books aimed at encouraging reluctant boy readers. He was joined by illustrator Michel Mulipola who has worked with him on several books and together they shared stories of success through reading. Mr Ropati also spoke to the class about his own sporting and academic journey.

Bon Voyage!

After a year of planning and working hard with fundraising our group of French and Classics students headed off on April 13 for their French adventure. The group will be spending time visiting important historical and cultural sites in Paris and the south of France. While in Montpellier, they will attend French lessons and will be hosted with French families to be fully immersed in the language and culture. The Classics students will get to see first hand some

examples of Roman architecture including the famous Pont du Gard aquaduct.

A very big merci to all those who have supported their various fundraising efforts and helped our students achieve their goal. We wish them bon voyage and safe travels, and look forward to hearing all about their amazing trip! You can follow their travels on their blog here: howickcollegefrenchtrip2016.tumblr.com

 Engaging Art

At the start of the term, Year 9 and 10 art classes contributed their creativity to a project for the Auckland Arts Festival by making wooden printing blocks for ‘Inkspot’, a textile printing workshop. Facilitated by textile designer and artist Katie Smith of Smitten Design, the project required students to create a print design that reflected their culture and identity. Family knowledge and research helped the students to finalise their designs which they then cut into wood.

‘Inkspot’ was one of the Arts Festival Family Day hands-on workshops and visitors were able to use the wooden printing blocks to print onto calico bags and fabric squares. Block printing is one of the oldest forms of printing, dating back to the 4th century AD. A group of students also volunteered to help run the workshop and they enjoyed seeing people creating colourful prints with their blocks. You can see a video of the printing workshop on the school Facebook page or here www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKMM7Y4gZ9o Well done to student Connor Nelson for putting the video together!

International Students

Term 1 has been full of catching up with our returning students, getting to know our new students, and helping them settle into our school and a different way of life. We have also hosted two short term groups - 14 students from Zhoushan High School and 7 students from Putuo High School in China. While they are with us, the groups spend time in class with their Howick College buddies and also have special ESOL classes where they continue their English language study and learn about our New Zealand culture. In one of their special Maori Culture classes, they made masks with Maori designs.

From these short visits, many students decide to return to Howick College to continue their education. For the teachers who accompany them, it is a valuable learning experience too as they see how the Kiwi education system works in comparison to the Chinese system. We are very grateful to our teachers,

students and buddies for welcoming these students into our school and giving them a wonderful stay.

Our homestay families are also a valuable part of the International Student experience and we are very lucky to have so many wonderful, welcoming and caring families to look after all our students - thank you so much!

This term we also welcomed Vanessa Pickett to the International team. Vanessa joins us as a Homestay Co-ordinator, working with Tania Troussova to make sure both our students and homestays have a happy and positive experience. We always need more homestays so if you are keen to host one of our lovely students and get to know more about a new culture, please contact either Tania ([email protected]) or Vanessa ([email protected]).

  Biology

Year 13 Biology students had the chance to experience real life lab work with their recent trip to the Liggins Institute at the University of Auckland. They leaned about the current research being conducted at the institute. The Liggins Institute is researching the link between the birth weight of newborns and the risk of obesity in later life. Our students also gained hands-on experience, helping prepare a range of samples in the laboratory.

Geography

The annual Year 12 Geography trip took 56 students, and 4 teachers to Tongariro in March to undertake river studies and experience the beautiful Tongariro World Heritage area. The trip gives the students hands-on learning they can then write about in their end of year Geography exam. Highlights of the trip were visiting the National Trout Centre, working within the rivers and the big breakfast every morning!

Special thanks to Mr Kerr, Mr Grant, Mrs Kyle, and Ms Urwin for coming along, and supporting the students.

Continuing their support for the Fred Hollows Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis NZ, Bacot House sold chocolates and roses for their Cupid’s Day fundraiser.

Orders were pre-sold and collated to be delivered during class time by Cupids in green. Some recipients had their treats delivered with a serenade.

Thanks to the Bacot committee for organising this fun event, and to all who supported their efforts. Over $500 was raised for the Bacot house charities.

Chocolate and strawberry topping, sprinkles and wafers… a yummy treat for lunchtime was on offer courtesy of Bell House. Their ice-cream sundaes proved popular with students and staff alike. The house raised over $500 for the Child Cancer Foundation - that’s a lot of ice-creams!

A big thank you to the Bell committee for their sundae making skills and to all who supported their fundraiser. We are sure you enjoyed your summer treat!

Rowing

Congratulations to Annie Williamson, Gemma Owen, Saskia Jordan, Sian Lovelock and Rhian Kocsis. A BRONZE at the North Island Championships, saw them qualify to race at the MAADI Cup. It is the first time a Howick College team has competed in this national

championship and the girls rowed extremely well, winning BRONZE in the final of the U18 Novice Coxed Fours. Annie and Rhian also placed 7th in the U15 Double Sculls.

This amazing achievement is the result of huge commitment and dedica-tion in those hard early morning sessions on the water—well done girls! A big thanks to their coaches Dudley Storey and Keith Hibberd.

Cricket

The Howick College 1st XI and staff played a tribute 20/20 match in honour of the late Martin Crowe. It was great to see a crowd come down to the field to watch the fun and support the teams. Well done to the 1st XI for taking the win!

For the 1st XI, it was a fitting finale for their great season; almost making the finals of the Gillette Cup, beating strong rivals along the way.

Rising Rugby League Stars Having the Howick Hornets club across the road has certainly helped improve the profile of the game at school and last year the college entered into a formal memorandum of understanding as a commitment to developing school/club pathways into rugby league.

We are proud of current student Keanu Laumatia-Paki: in 2015, he was selected for the Junior Kiwi U16 team and also represented Counties Manukau in the U17. His greatest achievement to date is selection for the Warriors Rugby Development Programme and is contracted to them for three years.

This year, we welcomed another star in Nathan Newton. Nathan came from Whangarei Boys’ High

where he was chased by two NRL clubs, Penrith and our own Warriors. Thankfully Nathan chose to stay in NZ and complete his education at Howick College. Nathan has played for NZ U17’s and Upper Central Zone in the NZRL national competition. Like Keanu, this year he is part of the U20’s Warriors player programme and is living with 8 other future NRL stars in the recently established ‘Warriors House’ in Howick. Both boys have a bright future ahead and may very well be our first ever students to represent NZ at the highest level of rugby league!

Board of Trustees

The start of the year has been a busy one throughout the school and I would like to say ‘well done’ to all the students and staff on their continued effort and achievements.

There has been a change on the board with Peter Jones stepping down from the position of Chairperson. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and school staff, I would like to thank Peter for his work and support of the school during his time as Chairperson. Peter remains a member of the board of trustees and faces new and exciting times ahead as Principal of Manurewa High School.

As trustees, our aim is to work alongside Mr Ropati and the staff of Howick College to enable everyone to achieve the high standards they have set and are pursuing.

This forward planning is evidenced in the last ERO report which demonstrated the achievements of students, staff and the senior leadership team. I quote:

“Howick College provides high quality education. Students engage positively with a curriculum that supports and strengthens their learning. A school- wide focus on student wellbeing underpins the school’s educational vision. School leaders and teachers are highly committed to fostering each individual’s present and future potential.”

It is our role as members of the board of trustees to support, govern and actively engage with the school and the community to maintain this standard. With a clear goal to follow the school vision: Inspiring a community of passionate learners

Vacancies will soon be available on the board of trustees and I would encourage like-minded parents and members of the community to consider joining us to achieve and maintain this goal.

The Board of Trustees wish all students success in their studies and future events of which there are many to look forward to.

Regards,

Alan Topham Chair, Board of Trustees
