HIEROMARTYR ELEUTHERIOS, BISHOP OF ILLYRIA SUNDAY OF THE FOREFATHERS (ANCESTORS) OF CHRIST

MARTYR ANTHIA, MOTHER OF ELEUTHERIOS • VENERABLE PAUL OF LATRA STEPHEN, BISHOP-CONFESSOR OF SUROZH • VENERABLE TRYPHON OF PECHENGA

Saint Eleutherios, the son of an illustrious Roman citizen, was raised in Christian piety by his mother Anthia (also known as Evanthia). She herself had been instructed by Saint Paul, believed in Christ and was baptized by the Apostle.

Eleutherios’ virtue was such that at the age twenty, he had been elevated to bishop of Illyria (present-day Albania).

In the reign of the emperor Hadrian (ruled 117-38 AD), Saint Eleutherios was tortured for his bold preaching about Christ, then was beheaded at Rome with his mother Anthia. The Eparch Caribus, who had tortured them, also came to believe in Christ and was executed.

3RD ANTIPHON (TROPARION OF THE RESURRECTION, TONE 1)

While the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers were guarding Thy most pure body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world, for which cause the heavenly powers cried aloud unto

Thee, O Giver of life: Glory to Thy Resurrec-tion, O Christ, glory to Thy Kingdom, glory to Thy providence, O Thou Who alone art the Lover of mankind.

Order for Holy Communion Members of the Orthodox Church age seven and above must prepare for Holy Communion with a recent confession, prayer, fasting from all food and drink from midnight (unless medical condition preclude it), being in church before the Epistle and Gospel readings, and being at peace with everyone.

CHILDREN going to church school and their teachers should come down the center aisle first. (Small children may need to be assisted by their parents.)

ALL OTHERS should wait until an usher dismisses your row from the center aisle. Then return to your place by a side aisle for the prayers of thanksgiving and the final blessing and dismissal. Please let choir members pass when they come down for Communion.

A Warm Welcome to Our Guests We are glad you are worshipping with us. Please note that participation in Holy Communion is limited to members of the Orthodox Church in good standing, who have prepared through prayer, fasting and confession.

For all others: though we cannot share Communion with you—since it is an expression of membership and full unity in faith—you are welcome to come forward after the dismissal, receive a blessing and partake of the blessed bread (from the large bowls). Please also sign our guest book, and introduce yourself to Fr. Nabil during the coffee hour. You may inquire with him how you can become a member.

Troparion for the Forefathers (Tone 2)

Thou hast justified by faith the ancient forefathers, and, through them, thou hast gone before and betrothed unto thyself the Church of the Gentiles. Let the saints, therefore, take pride in glory, for from their

seed sprouted forth a noble fruit, and she it was who gave birth to Thee without seed. Wherefore, by their pleadings, O Christ God, save our souls.

Troparion for St. Eleutherios (Tone 5)

Being comely adorned in thy sacred priestly robes and newly drenched with the streams of thy pure and sanctified blood, thou didst soar aloft to stand before thy Master, Christ;

hence never cease to intercede for those honoring with faith thy mighty and blessed contest, thou Overthrower of Satan, O wise and blessed Eleutherios.

Troparion for St. George (Tone 4, Byzantine)

Liberator of captives, Defender of the poor, the Physician of the sick and the Champion of kings, O Trophy-bearer, Great-martyr

George, intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.

Kontakion in Preparation for the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Tone 3)

The Virgin cometh today to the cave to give birth, ineffably to bring forth the Word eter-nal. Therefore, rejoice, O earth at the message.

With the angels and shepherds give glory to Him who shall appear by His own will as a young child, He Who is from eternity God.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

Reading from St. Paul’s 2nd Epistle to Timothy (1.8-18; St. Eleutherios)

TIMOTHY, MY SON, do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his pris-oner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God, Who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago, and now has manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, Who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, and therefore I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know Whom I have believed, and I am sure that He is able to guard until that Day what has been

entrusted to me. Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus; guard the truth that has been en-trusted to you by the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us. You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, and among them Phygelos and Hermogenes. May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphoros, for he often refreshed me; he was not ashamed of my chains, but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me eagerly and found me. May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.

Holy Gospel according to St. Luke (14.16-24; 11th Sunday of Luke/the Forefathers)

THE LORD SPOKE THIS PARABLE: “A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; and at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come; for all is now ready.’ But, one by one, they all began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ So the servant came and

reported this to his master. Then the house-holder in anger said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.’ And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP RE-COMMITMENT

This is the time of year when we reflect upon our many blessings and give thanks to our almighty God. It is also the time to re-evaluate our stewardship commitment for the coming year. This commitment is in the form of our annual stewardship pledge. This is the pledge we make to continue the opera-tional support of our church for the coming year and is separate from the building fund/mortgage pledge.

Our drive concludes today, our “Pledge Sunday,” as we step forward at the end of Liturgy and renew our commitments to sharing in the Lord’s work by making our pledges for 2020. Then, after the Church School Christmas Pageant, our stewardship committee will serve brunch in thanksgiving for our stewards.

Please fill out your pledge card prayerfully, and drop it into the pledge box at the end of Liturgy, or mail it directly to the church office. Please know that your pledge is confidential, and only the office staff will open the pledge box or your pledge envelope.

We hope everyone is striving to reach a goal of at least 10% of total income as a pledge. If you can’t reach 10%, please consider increasing your pledge from last year, and continue to work toward 10% in the future.

Father Nabil, the parish council and stewardship committee are asking for 100% participa-tion from all members of St. George Parish. Please help us reach our goal!

The Stewardship Committee, Duke Haddad and Patrick Koers

FOR ST. IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH, THE “GOD-BEARER”

CHURCH SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

Immediately following the Liturgy—before refreshments are served—our children will put on a new, original Christmas program.

You may grab a quick cup of coffee, then please take a seat in front of the stage as quickly as possible. We will begin as soon as the clergy arrive.

JOIN US FOR FELLOWSHIP FOLLOWING THE LITURGY TODAY

Coffee hour is hosted today by the Parish Council and Stewardship Ministry Team.

Sign up for hosting coffee hour on the bulletin board next to the elevator. (Something simple is all that’s expected, though you may do more, if you want, for a special occasion.)

TO SEND OUR YOUTH TO CAMP

Our Campers have coupons for Crew Car Wash, just in time for Christmas gifting.

Coupons don’t expire, and Crew will give 50% back for our youth to go to camp. See any member of our Teen SOYO during coffee hour for Car Wash coupons.

• Ladies of St. George • Knights of St. George • Charity Ministry Team, etc.

All our parishioners will be listed in the directory, including those who didn’t take or submit pictures.

1. If you’ve moved recently, are moving soon or have any other up-dates to your contact information, please make sure to update our records in the church office at [email protected]

2. We will print the name of each family member, the address and telephone numbers and emails of adults. Please let us know if you don’t want some of your contact information printed by informing the church office at [email protected]

PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS: PRE-CHRISTMAS FAST

November 15 marked the first day of the NATIVITY FAST, which runs for forty days, until Christmas. During this time, we abstain from meat and dairy products. Then the last few days of the fast—Dec. 20-24—become stricter, when fish, wine and oil are also excluded. Everyone should also plan to make their confession sometime during the fast.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22: CHRISTMAS CAROLING

Our choir and Teen SOYO invite every-one to join in Christmas Caroling. We will be visiting some of our older pa-rishioners who are homebound or in nursing homes. It’s only a couple of hours after Liturgy, but it means so much to our shut-ins.

Please let Fr. Nabil know of any parishioner who is unable to get out right now and who might appreciate a stop by the carolers or some other type of assistance for Christmas.

Christmas Eve Schedule: Tuesday, December 24

With the angels, the shepherds, the wise men and all the saints, then, let us come to adore Him Christmas Eve.

8:30 a.m. Royal Hours of Christmas

10:00 a.m. Divine Liturgy (Paramon of Christmas) While we encourage all to come to both the morning and night services (which are not the same), this may be an excellent opportunity for young children and entire families to celebrate the birth of Christ together, especially if attendance at the late service be impossible.

8:30 p.m. Christmas Matins

10:00 p.m. CHRISTMAS DIVINE LITURGY In celebration of the Feast and as a token of our love and appreciation of you, Fr. Nabil and Khouriyah Elaine will host dinner in the church hall immediately following Liturgy, assisted by our parish council.

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS OFFERINGS

So that we might join the wise men in offering gifts to the newborn King, please bring in or mail back your “Christmas Gift to My Church” card by Sunday, December 22. Extra copies are available at the candle stand, or make your offering online at tinyurl.com/ChristmasGiftChurch

Include the names of the living and departed whom you wish to have commemorated at the preparation of the Holy Gifts. We will also print the names of those offering and those being remembered in the bulletin for the Christmas Liturgy.

Our Christmas offerings—separate from our tithes—are dedicated this year to the $350k matching gift challenge for iconography and mortgage. We are already at $136k to-ward the match, and we look forward to Dr. Kordis returning in early 2020 to complete the last five panels of the nave as well as the narthex, prior to our hosting the Midwest Diocese Parish Life Conference in June. With the match, we will also retire the second mortgage.

COLLEGE CONTACT

Our Ladies of St. George are looking for updated college

addresses. We know that college students move a lot, to different dorms and apartments. To stay in touch with our students away from home (including snail-mailing care packages), please provide Winter 2020 semester mailing addresses and email to Maria Nimri ([email protected]).

PICK UP 2020 CALENDARS IN NARTHEX

Our new church icon calendars are now available. Please take one. The calendar grid includes each day’s scripture readings and indicates fasting days and commemora-tions, and it includes space for your own notes and ap-pointments.

IN CASE OF SNOW

When it’s cold or wet/snowy, kindly enter via the glass lobby doors instead of the big church doors (so we don’t let in a big blast of cold air or track in water). It’s also much safer and more convenient to use our nice, covered drop-off.

If we ever have to cancel a service or event on account of weather, we will send out a parish-wide email, and we’ll post a notice on our website (www.stgindy.org) and on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/stgindy).
