    Introduction: This worksheet allows young children (Pre-K through 2 nd grade) to practicepencil control, writing, and coding/decoding skills as they learn the basics of EgyptianHieroglyphs. Hieroglyphs are based on sounds so there are two different symbols forletter A, for example, one for the short sound and one for the long sound. In thisactivity I have only included ten letters and their corresponding symbols, so youngchildren will not be overwhelmed. You may assume that the symbols represent shortvowels and the most common phonetic sound of each letter. More information aboutEgyptian Hieroglyphs can be found online.

    Instructions: Print out each of the three worksheet pages.

    The first page is the key. Explain to your child that each letter is represented by thesymbol next to it. There are two practice spaces where your child can try to copy the

    symbol (or the letter).The second page has some simple CVC words written in hieroglyphs, which your childshould decode using the key found on the first worksheet page. The child should writethe letter corresponding to each symbol in the space above it, and then read the entireword.

    The third page has two words for your child to translate into hieroglyphs. If drawing (orwriting letters) is difficult for your child, make some extra copies of the key and let yourchild cut out the letters and symbols to paste on the worksheets.

    You can extend the lesson by providing a complete hieroglyphs chart (found on variouswebsites) and having your child write his/her name in hieroglyphs. Have your childcreate their own symbol-based form of writing by making up symbols for each letterand then writing a secret message for you to decode.
