Letters to Home

What If: You could read the Bible through in nine months, understand it, and discuss it with friends and neighbors? You could enjoy a meal that enables young people to experience the love of Jesus? You could make a life in Delphi, Indiana and make an impact in Russia, Liberia, West Africa, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Ghana, and countless other places, as well as Delphi, Indiana? You could serve others and grow closer to Christ? That all happens here at Delphi UMC as you are involved, serve, give, and connect. During this month, sign ups start for The Story! The Story is a four mini-sermon series that covers the entire Bible. It will revolutionize your understanding of the scriptures and help you apply God’s word. And, growing in the Bible was the #1 desire of our members, according to our members last January! Plus, this month we hold the annual Chicken Barbeque that helps send youth to camp next summer. We will also continue our missions that serve around the world. Thank you for growing in Christ, and sign up for our growth groups this month! Peace

Pastor Todd

He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Bishop James S. Thomas Leadership Award presented by the Methodist Federation for Social Action of East Ohio. He was awarded the Iowa MFSA Social Action Award in June 2015. His mission statement is: "To encourage all people with the love of

Jesus Christ to rise to their highest potential.”

Creation Care News

Who enjoys these foods: Almonds, Apples, Melons, Cherries, Cranberries, Peaches, Strawberries, and grapes? If you said yes to any of these, we should thank a tiny flying insect- the Honey bee. Honey bees pollinate over 70+ different crops/plants that provide food. It is not just the Honey bees, but many other insects pollinate crops for us. Without Honey bees, our food production would be severely hit. Honey Bees are important, and God created them for special uses. Honey Bees are declining and some reasons are: pesticides, bee stress (moving long distance with hives to help pollinate flowers), parasites, and not enough nutrition. STILL, we can do things to help the bees: plant bee-friendly flowers and herbs in your garden and buy local honey (health benefits). Plus, weeds (dandelions and clovers) are good for bees. Don’t forget, honey bees are not out to get you. Get to know a beekeeper!

There are three types or groups of honey bees – the Queen who lays eggs; the workers (female) who clean the hive, nurse feeding larvae, and guard the hive; and the drones (males) who don’t have a stinger and mate with the queen. Honey

is made by bees for food, and we can harvest the honey too. *Creation Care is a newly formed ministry at DUMC, focusing on caring for our earth for generations to come to enjoy and appreciate. For more information, contact Dr. Dawn Frank, Jill Clothier or indicate your interest on your Connect card.

Meet our New Bishop: The Committee on Episcopacy of the North Central Jurisdiction announced the assignment of Bishop Julius C. Trimble to the Indiana Episcopal Area Saturday, July 16. Bishop Trimble will begin his service Thursday, September 1, 2016. Trimble will succeed Bishop Michael J. Coyner who has served the Indiana Conference for the past 12 years and will retire Wednesday, August 31, 2016

Trimble, who previously served as the resident bishop of the Iowa Area for the past eight years, was elected as Bishop in The United Methodist Church on July 18, 2008, from the East Ohio Conference.

A native of Chicago, he was ordained deacon and elder in the Northern Illinois Conference where he served two churches before transferring to the East Ohio Conference. He served churches in the Cleveland, Ohio area and as District Superintendent of the Cleveland District from 1996-2003.

He received training in faith-based community organizing and served as President of WECAN (Westside-Eastside Communities Action Network) in Cleveland, Ohio, a faith-based community organization addressing issues of safety, economic development, and public education.

A graduate of Illinois State University and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, he received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Ashland Theological Seminary. A strong advocate for social justice and increased attention to ministries addressing mental health issues, he has promoted ministries related to domestic violence and the role of the faith community. Bishop Trimble has worked with ecumenical leadership in Iowa in response to gun violence and immigration reform. He serves as Chairperson of the United Methodist Interagency Immigration Task Force. Before his election as a bishop, he served as Adjunct Instructor at United Methodist-related Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH where he taught courses on the African American religious experience and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Married to Racelder Grandberry-Trimble, a professional counselor and graduate of Methodist Theological School of Ohio. They are

Monthly Morsel Children learn what they live. Parental attitudes shape children. The way we express our approval or our disapproval, the things we encourage or discourage, all of these things teach our children what we value. They pick those values up and

they learn to live them out as well. For example, if children live with approval, they’ll learn to like themselves. Approval is a way of affirming our child’s emerging self and helping him or her to build a positive self-image and healthy self-esteem. It’s often the simple gestures or words of encouragement that do the trick. A pat on the back for a job well done, a smile and a thumbs up when you catch them doing something nice, an affirming phrase like ‘I’m so proud of you for picking up your toys without even being asked’ or ‘that was very mature of you’ when you see them handle a tough situation well; these are all confidence building tools and messages of approval and love that parents send their children. It’s way too easy to point out the things that are wrong. Do an experiment for a week and only point out the positive and see what happens in your child. You may see the very changes you desire. Parents, starting August 21 we will have a Sunday School class utilizing the Story as a background. The purpose is to help you disciple your child in the ways of Jesus Christ. As you study the Bible together with your family, together you’ll learn to apply it to your lives. In essence, this fulfills our vision to love enough so we can connect people to Jesus Christ and support families. I will be leading this class in the children’s wing. Look for the sign ups coming soon!

Please join us August 28th for a Thank You and Farewell celebration.

Becky Clouse, our wonderfully gifted music director, has been blessed with a full time teaching position at

Otterbein Elementary School starting in August. While we will be sad to see her leave as our music director, we know this is such a positive move for Becky, who loves teaching music! More details will be in the upcoming bulletins, but mark the date! Help us say Thank You for six years of beautiful music.

Kids Hope USA Callout Many students are looking forward to the new school year with old friends, new teachers, and the anticipation of learning exciting and challenging things. Many others are dreading the new school year with no friends, little support from home, and the worry of repeated struggles and stresses.

We are in need of a few new mentors to love, care, and share an hour a week with one of Delphi Community Elementary School’s students.

Please see Rita Smith, call/text 765-714-0235, or email [email protected] for more information. I would love to share the secret of how one hour a week can reap rewards beyond belief for a child in need and for you!

I wish I had a mentor...

Move Up Sunday! The kids will officially move up to the next grade level on August 7th. This only affects incoming Kindergarteners , second graders, and fourth graders because it means they’ll be moving to the next room for children’s church or entering GRAPPLE.

As a reminder, we have three rooms: Preschool, K-1, and 2-3. 4th and 5th graders do not attend children’s church, but instead

meet twice a month during the service for GRAPPLE, and stay in the sanctuary the rest of the month.

GRAPPLE meets in room 100 (off of the office area).

Children’s Church (During Both Services-Ages 3-3rd grade) We’re beginning the third year of our journey through the bible, and on August 7th Jesus will be born! We’ll spend this year walking through the New testament and learning more about the life of Christ.

Children’s Choirs will begin on

Wednesday September, 7th. 6:30-7:30

**See Ashley Duff for more information

Prayer Ministry:

Keep step with God with your quiet time of prayer and meditation. Our daily walk can have bumps, roadblocks and dead-ends along the way; that is why it’s so important to take God’s hand for strength and direction. HIS PROMISE: “The Lord directs the steps of the godly, He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.” Psalms 37:23-24 NLT Prayer Vigil Praises from the 2016 Vigil—keep those fires burning in your hearts and lives. “I have praise that God put it on our hearts to be here and for the ability to connect in a deeper way.” “You love me. Thank You for a church that shares Your light into the world and for a church that loves enough…” ”You have given me peace today with serenity. I love You!” “You hold my hand and walk with me in all I do. You never let me go. You give me peace that passes all understanding.”

the students from school and drive them to the church. After a snack, we will learn some fun skits

and study the Bible verses that go with them. This is a commitment, so plan to attend every rehearsal. Forms will be

extras in the church office. If you have any questions, contact Jana Schwartz at 765/563-6208 (no texting) or e-mail

The Story Timeline:

December Advent and Christmas

January Sign up for Spring Story Groups

January 1st—May 20th The Story in Sermons and Small Groups

The Story: Sign-ups for growth groups begin on August 7th. Those groups will begin on August 21st and coincide with the beginning of our new sermon series, “The Story.” The Story is an abridged, chronological Bible that reads like a novel. There are no verse references, and Scripture segments are seamlessly woven together with transition text into a single grand narrative. For those intimidated or overwhelmed by the unabridged Bible, The Story helps people understand God’s Word more fully and engage with it more easily. The Story, The Story study guide, and additional resources will be available at church for a suggested donation starting August 7th.

Congratulations to Michael “Gonzo” Gonzalez on his

appointment to Wheatland Avenue UMC in

Logansport. Michael is a licensed local Pastor in the

United Methodist Church

and is being sent out from this church.

It is fantastic that he and Beth can serve

the Lord in this way. In addition, we all

serve as pastors in different ways.
