16 March 2015 Question 1b It appears that cost cutting measures are being taken in areas that are vital such as on-toxic weed control and this must never be allowed since it is essential for the overall health and well being of the community to not be exposed to the toxic chemicals, such as roundup, that it appears parks, stormwater and Auckland Transport are constantly slipping into the mix - even in areas such as our chemical free Sherwood Basin. Adopting Integrated Organic Management Systems throughout all council operations could make enormous savings, not just in weed management but in almost every sphere of council activities. This would include examining what activities should and shouldn't be funded from rates - e.g. make up for staff? Furthermore the fluoridation of the water supply should cease immediately and would relieve that financial burden from the rate payers also. There should be less spent on circuseese to keep the masses happy and more spent on opportunities to make Auckland City a far healthier place to live so the masses would be more able to entertain themselves. General Rates increases should not exceed wage increases. Question 2 comment: Building more roads to address transport problems is liking buying a new larger suit every year to address obesity.

Question 2b comment: Don't do it! Question 2c comment More cycle and walk ways and a real commitment to carpooling and electric car sharing or shuttles. Question 3 comment Scrub the CCOs Question 6b comment: These projects are all meaningless unless people are fit and healthy enough to enjoy them . . . and then the community would be able to provide better for themselves anyway and not need all the funding from rates. No Rates for Roundup or other toxic chemicals that are destroying our quality of life and poisoning our children and pets. Get the basics right - keep the air water and environment clean and as free as possible of toxic chemicals, waste and other pollution - and we can look after our own entertainment thank you. Council needs to concentrate on delivering basic services and caring properly for our natural heritage. Money needs to be found urgently to SAVE NORTHCROSS BUSH & LONG BAY! Question 7 - Additional Feedback. There is a staggering amount of toxic chemicals now released into the environment and even deliberately added to our food and water and in the air we breathe. Studies that have been done usually only consider just one of an array of thousands of chemicals that didn't even exist before 1950 and in themselves raise serious concerns: glyphosate or Roundup, monofluorocetate or 1080 and hydrofluosilicic acid are all deliberately added by Auckland Council and paid by our rates - plus others: and combined with all the additives in food itself and the household cleaners and even cosmetics: and bearing in mind that these can be neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors and carcinogenic in their own right;combined with one another in innumerable combinations and permutations they can act synergistically to produce damage that has never been examined because it is so complex researchers wouldn't even know where to start. What we do know is that we have an obesity epidemic; 1 in 4 children with respiratory problems; 1 in 10 with serious food allergies; diabetes, cancer, heart disease and auto immune disorders all implicated with this toxic exposure; and of course dementia poised to overwhelm our health system by 1050 - I'd say earlier than that! I object most strongly to my rate money being implicated in this assault on our health and well being: I ask that no more Roundup or other pesticides be purchased with rate monies: that consent be withdrawn to drop 1080 on our water catchment in the Hunuas; for Auckland Council to never allow 1080 poison to be dropped anywhere in the Auckland region: that the dumping of highly toxic hydrofluosilicic acid be stopped immediately and the money saved go towards non-toxic weed management: that Auckland Council purchases the least toxic alternative in all it's activities - e.g. toilets, restrooms, libraries, functions - only organic food and drink - drops any sponsorship or involvement in junk food or drink such as Coca Cola, McD's, etc

Not too much to ask surely? We could be over half way there by now if this Press Release had been heeded: Helen Wd 28 February 15:25 COMBINED MEDIA RELEASE: Pesticide Action Network Aotearoa NZ Soil & Health Association Safe Food Campaign July 6th, 2007 Time to Ban Aerial Spraying Here Too “Congratulations to the European Union for their enlightened approach to protecting human health and the environment by progressing plans to ban aerial spraying of pesticides”. That’s the message today from Pesticide Action Network Aotearoa NZ, the Soil & Health Association and the Safe Food Campaign. The EU’s Environment Committee has endorsed plans by the European Commission for a ban on aerial spraying of pesticides as part of a wide-ranging strategy to cut down the use of pesticides. “Its time now for New Zealand to also look at banning aerial spraying of pesticides” said Dr Meriel Watts of Pesticide Action Network. “Far too many people have had their lives blighted by aerial spraying in both rural and urban areas of New Zealand. Terrible health effects have resulted from the aerial spraying of the herbicide 2,4-D; and the adverse effects of the unnecessary spraying of West Auckland for the Painted Apple moth are still being felt.” “Many horticultural growers have lost valuable crops to drift from the aerial spraying of 2,4-D” added Steffan Browning of Soil & Health. "Soil & Health often receives complaints of cross-boundary spray drift." “ The aerial spraying of highly toxic insecticides such as chlorpyrifos is still permitted in New Zealand, even though this insecticide is known to cause adverse developmental effects in children and has been restricted in the US” said Alison White of the Safe Food Campaign. The three organisations, which have been trying to combat pesticide problems in New Zealand for many years, also welcome other initiatives by the EU and urge the New Zealand government to be equally proactive in reducing pesticide use here. These initiatives include a national pesticide use reduction target of 25% within 5 years, and 50% within 10 years, including non-agricultural uses a system of levies on pesticides to fund the reduction plan ban on pesticides in all areas used by the general public (e.g. parks, school grounds, residential areas) and in "substantial no-spray zones" around them. a buffer zone of 10m around all water courses

using the 'substitution principle’ whereby more dangerous substances will be removed from the market if safer alternatives exist “These are all very good measures that will certainly contribute substantially to improved public health and environmental integrity”, said Dr Watts. “New Zealand has dragged its feet for many years on this issue, trying to shuffle it under the carpet and manage the problems by talking with industry. But progress has been too slow. Until this country is prepared to take a firm stand on pesticides the issue will not go away.” ”One of the major problems New Zealand has failed to deal with is the unregulated non-commercial uses.” “Right now untrained home gardeners can access all kinds of toxic herbicides and are enthusiastically waging war on weeds, with no clue about the toxic effects of the herbicides they are exposing themselves and their neighbours, too – let alone the effects on the wider environment” said Dr Watts. This is simply no longer acceptable in so-called developed country.” "Soil & Health has recently requested that ERMA reassess home gardeners access to pesticides," said Steffan Browning. The European Committee stressed that only quantitative use reduction targets in the national action plans will push governments to lower the amount of pesticides used. The Member States are urged to promote low pesticide-input farming and organic farming, giving priority to non-chemical alternatives. Professor Gluckman is about to release a Report on Obesity and this needs to be read with these facts in mind: Shockingly, 42 billion pounds of toxic, hormone-blocking chemicals are dumped on unsuspecting Americans EVERY day -- everything from insecticides to heavy metals to flame retardants. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control tested 2,522 Americans to see how much of that toxic load was sneaking into our bodies. The results? Every single person had toxins -- a total of 212 different toxic chemicals overall. Worse, shocking new research shows these toxins can disrupt fat loss hormones, killing your metabolism and forcing you to pack on the pounds. Sure, you can eat organic and drink filtered water -- but you just can’t escape them ALL. Friends of Sherwood and others have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep our neighbourhoods as beautiful and healthy as possible and it is disappointing to find that Auckland Council is allowing renegade contractors and CCOs to plunge us back into the 20th century . . . please STOP this happening NOW!!! AT ‘bullies’ contractor into spraying chemicals Monday, 9 March 2015, 2:39 pm Press Release: Weed Management Advisory MEDIA RELEASE – 9TH MARCH 2015 Auckland Transport ‘bullies’ contractor into spraying chemicals The Auckland-based Weed Management Advisory group is accusing Auckland Transport of gross interference with a legitimate vegetation control contract and abusing its powers by instructing a contractor to spray chemicals.

Hana Blackmore said today that the Weed Management Advisory (WMA) had written urgently to Auckland Transport (AT) Chairman, Dr Lester Levy and CEO David Warburton demanding that AT’s instructions to spray chemicals on roads in the North West Urban area currently controlled with a non-chemical hot water treatment be rescinded immediately and the spray contractor told to cease and desist. “We knew as long ago as August last year that AT officers were putting considerable pressure on both the main contractor and his specialist hot water sub-contractor to break their 100% non-chemical contract and spray chemicals” said Hana Blackmore. “But what we did not expect is that the hot water company’s legitimate refusal to use chemicals would result in another contractor being secretly employed to go out and spray his area all over again with chemicals after he had treated it successfully with hot water.” “This is an outrageous situation” said Hana Blackmore, “and in our opinion Auckland Transport’s actions in this affair are nothing short of bullying.” “What is worse is that I had publicly raised this very concern about contractors being pressured to spray chemicals when I presented WMA’s Human Rights Report to Auckland Transport’s December board meeting, and had followed up with a detailed letter in January.” “We were informed only days ago by Dr Levy that an investigation and review into this matter was undertaken by AT’s Group Manager of Risk and Audit. His conclusion was that “the issues raised were not justified” and that no further investigation was required. “That another contractor was secretly spraying whilst this investigation was supposedly underway would suggest that either AT approved these actions or their investigation was shallow and superficial,” said Hana Blackmore. Dr Meriel Watts said that the WMA are now hugely concerned that Auckland Transport’s inexplicable actions are part of a determined campaign to maintain agrichemical use in their road corridor operations, at all costs. The North West Urban vegetation control contract is the first area to have a legacy chemical regime treated with non-chemicals after Auckland Transport’s boundary re-configurations resulted in part of North Shore’s hot water contract being combined with two smaller Waitakere and Rodney ‘chemical’ areas. The specialist hot water company who was already doing the North Shore hot water contract simply added the two smaller ‘chemical’ areas into their operations, said Hana Blackmore, “thereby achieving economies of scale and operational efficiency.” “This was not a covert or clandestine operation. The tender and price for the contract was for a performance based integrated service using hot water for the whole contract area. AT accepted that legal tender, awarded the contract, and the specialist hot water company has been carrying out that work to specification” “It is well known within AT and the industry that in all the years this specialist company has been working on the North Shore contract they have consistently met audit standards of over 98%. They have never had to resort to chemicals to meet specification,” emphasised Blackmore. “So we simply cannot understand why on earth AT should interfere in this appalling and underhand manner.”

The WMA are now seriously worried that the hot water company has been singled out because of their own actions in demanding evidence to back up AT’s claims that using chemicals on the road corridor vegetation control operations are the only cost effective solution. “We have been putting in OIA requests for the basis of AT’s claims since 2012. All have been denied. Alternative costings have been done for us by the hot water company which we have supplied to both AT and Council. They have disappeared without trace, and both organisations continue to claim chemicals are the cheapest option.” “It is our fear that by disparaging this leading edge hot water technology and discrediting the company, AT can continue to say there is no reliable evidence for our claims and continue to cover up the true cost of vegetation control operations.” Hana Blackmore said this is a very serious accusation, not made lightly. But this very issue was also one they had raised with Dr Levy in their January letter and which the review concluded was not justified. “In the light of what has since happened, the WMA are calling for the report of that investigation to be made public, and an independent review of all AT actions since the contracts were awarded last year be undertaken” said Hana Blackmore. “What has yet to be revealed is why AT is so absolutely determined to continue to spray agrichemicals in contravention of Auckland Council policy, in contravention of their own specifications, in contravention of community wishes made explicitly clear in a petition to them and Auckland Council in 2013, and in defiance of economic rationale. Who is driving this absurd ideological behaviour and waste of ratepayer’s money?” asked Dr Meriel Watts. As Dr Watts makes clear, WMA has spent hundreds of hours of unpaid time trying to get AT to honour community wishes and implement Auckland Council’s Weed Management Policy and stop spraying agrichemicals on the roadside - in the process providing leading science, technological and economic data - only to be stonewalled by AT’s secretive and obstructive behaviour. The WMA will be taking the matter to the Ombudsman. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THIS ABUSE IS TO TAKE AWAY THEIR POWER TO USE THE ALTOGETHER!!! If Hudson can do it Auckland can too . . . } http://www.ville.hudson.qc.ca/bylaws/270_Pesticides_anglais.pdf and the Netherlands, Russia, Tasmania and Mexico: The Netherlands is the latest country, after Russia, Tasmania and Mexico, to say no to Monsanto. Starting at the end of 2015, the sale of glyphosate-based herbicides to private parties will be prohibited due to a recent decision by the Dutch Parliament. This means that people who spray RoundUp on their gardens and lawns will have to find another form of pest control. The main ingredient in RoundUp, glyphosate, has been linked to cancer, infertility, birth defects, nervous system damage, and kidney disease. Esther Ouwehand – one of two members of the Dutch Parliament from the Party of Animals submitted the motion to ban glyphosate along with Gerard Schouw. Political parties PvdA, CU, 50+, GroenLinks, SP, and PVV got behind the motion, making it hard for the cabinet to ignore the environmental issues. The motion was finally adopted.

Glyphosate induces human breast cancer cells growth via estrogen receptors.
Thongprakaisang S1, Thiantanawat A, Rangkadilok N, Suriyo T, Satayavivad J. Author information
Abstract Glyphosate is an active ingredient of the most widely used herbicide and it is believed to be less toxic than other pesticides. However, several recent studies showed its potential adverse health effects to humans as it may be an endocrine disruptor. This study focuses on the effects of pure glyphosate on estrogen receptors (ERs) mediated transcriptional activity and their expressions. Glyphosate exerted proliferative effects only in human hormone-dependent breast cancer, T47D cells, but not in hormone-independent breast cancer, MDA-MB231 cells, at 10⁻¹² to 10⁻⁶M in estrogen withdrawal condition. The proliferative concentrations of glyphosate that induced the activation of estrogen response element (ERE) transcription activity were 5-13 fold of control in T47D-KBluc cells and this activation was inhibited by an estrogen antagonist, ICI 182780, indicating that the estrogenic activity of glyphosate was mediated via ERs. Furthermore, glyphosate also altered both ERα and β expression. These results indicated that low and environmentally relevant concentrations of glyphosate possessed estrogenic activity. Glyphosate-based herbicides are widely used for soybean cultivation, and our results also found that there was an additive estrogenic effect between glyphosate and genistein, a phytoestrogen in soybeans. However, these additive effects of glyphosate contamination in soybeans need further animal study.

Dear Mayor and Councillors,
Last week, two studies were published in peer-reviewed mainstream medical journals, which showed a strong
link between fluoridation and serious adverse health effects to thyroid and brain function. These two studies
looked at fluoridation at the levels that we have in New Zealand.
Evidence that fluoridation causes harm is now undeniably serious, and Council needs to take urgent action to
call a moratorium until safety can be guaranteed.
Almost every New Zealander knows someone with thyroid problems or a child with ADHD. It is within your
power, and it is your responsibility, to protect your community and suspend this out-dated practice.
The first study published last week showed thyroid disease patient numbers from 99% of GP practices in the
UK. This was published in Epidemiology and Community Health, which is one of the main British medicals
journals. More than one hundred news outlets in the UK, large and small have reported this, as well as in the US
by Newsweek, NBC, The Chicago Tribune, among others – as well as Australian TV news. See Abstract and
links to media coverage
In New Zealand, only the Jim Mora show on Radio NZ has covered the story. The NZ Dental Association
spokesperson, Dr Beaglehole, was the only person interviewed. Of course it is his job to promote and defend
fluoridation, so it is not surprising that as a dentist, he was defensive, evasive and unable to answer questions
about thyroid and brain function. Please see transcript of this interview for Fluoride Free NZ’s rebuttal of Dr
Beaglehole’s inadequate and misleading answers. Also see our press release on this last week.

The second study last week was published in Environmental Health and shows that there was
a strong correlation between an increase in ADHD in children and increased prevalence of fluoridation.
Interestingly, the authors say “…exposure to fluoridated water may contribute to ADHD via suppression of the
thyroid gland…” See Fluoridation linked to ADHD for more details
We understand that correlation is not necessarily causation. However, unless promoters can prove otherwise, it
has to be recognised that fluoridation could be causing an increase in ADHD and the appropriate action taken.
This study confirms the growing body of evidence that fluoride causes damage to the brain (see Fluoride Brain
studies for more info).
Lowering people’s thyroid function and causing an increase in ADHD rates is an extremely serious matter. It
cannot be weighed against any unproven reduction in dental decay. Nor can it be weighed against political
careers or maintaining a unified front. There are children being born today who are at risk of having their brain
development affected. People only have one chance for brain development. If this goes wrong, there is no going
back to correct it.
Fluoridation is reckless and irresponsible. Councilors should not knowingly allow this damaging practice to
continue. Contrary to the claims made by fluoridation promoters, no safety studies have ever been conducted in
the world. It’s time to put your community first, and call an immediate suspension of fluoridation in your
community.
Sherrill Hood - 16th March 2015
We have just done a motorhome journey in the south island with our little dog. Sadly there were signs everywhere "Deadly to Dogs". It was not possible to walk in the glorious beech forests, or even let our dog out to stretch his legs. This would not be tolerated in Europe or the UK - I understand about the risks to kiwis from dogs. But when you cannot walk your dog because of the risk of poison it is another matter entirely. I am a New Zealander and am ashamed at our POISONING of OUR native forests. We just cannot enjoy them and they are too silent. Came home to suburbia and birdsong. The most birdsong we had heard in all our travels. Our suburbia is full of cats and dogs and BIRDS! If you kill one thing you will kill or diminish the rest. Even if 1080 and other poisons stopped tomorrow we will not be free of poison in our lands until my grandchildren have grandchildren! Really awful situation and VERY Bad "Science".
This is why we shouldn't be dropping 1080 by helicopter - and certainly not in our water catchment - and remember this is bumping up the fluoride already added to the water! How toxic is 1080? Toxicologist explains IAN SHAW Last updated 07:55 13/03/2015
Share
SECURITY MEASURES: Warnings and safety measures were put in place to counter the 1080 threat.
Professor Ian Shaw explores why and how 1080 is so toxic and asks what is the risk of a child dying from contaminated formula.
New Zealand is one of a very few countries where four numbers in a specific order - 1080 - leads to vehement debate, outright disagreement and intellectual fisticuffs. This is because our green and pleasant land uses 1080 regularly; other countries have either banned or severely restricted its use because of its non-discriminatory and extreme toxicity.
1080, of course, is used to control animal pests (in particular possums) that are threatening our delicate, unique flora. As a result, there is a significant amount of pure, white crystalline 1080 imported for incorporation into baits designed to appeal to our marauding furry invaders.
Whether we should or should not use 1080 is a debate that has rumbled on for a long time, but is not for consideration here. The vehemence of the debate has led to extreme factions, one of which sent an anonymous letter to the CEO of Fonterra in November threatening to poison milk powder used in infant formula with 1080; and, to prove the point, sent a sample of 1080-laced milk powder with the letter.

So, what is 1080 and why is it so toxic? It is the sodium salt of fluoroacetic acid and is converted to fluorocitric acid in mammalian (including human) cells - this stops cell metabolism dead.
This interesting quirk of biochemistry is the key to 1080's extreme toxicity because citric acid is important in the generation of energy in cells. To initiate the energy generation process, citric acid is converted by an enzyme to a slightly different molecule (aconitic acid) that is converted to something else which is converted to something else and so on, eventually leading back to citric acid.
As this cycle turns, energy-rich molecules spin off which drive cellular processes. Without them the cell would die. The fluorocitric acid produced from 1080 stops the enzyme that converts aconitic acid in the cycle dead in its tracks. This stops energy generation and kills the cell.
This process is called lethal synthesis and is a very devious mechanism of toxicity.
1080 could spell death to any cell it enters. It does not discriminate between cells or target animal. Providing the cell has the citric acid cycle it is doomed. So, if anyone tells you that 1080 can discriminate between pests and native animals they are talking complete and utter rubbish.
The only way to target the effect is to use baits that a particular pest prefers (eg, carrots for possums), but even then if another animal eats the 1080-laced bait it will die, as might animals that eat poisoned carcases.
This biochemical jiggery-pokery explains how 1080 so effectively kills cells, but to understand the risk associated with the eco-terrorist threat we are currently facing we need to know how much would kill a child.
Surprisingly few reliable data are available to base this on. Perhaps the best are studies in dogs carried out many years ago. This introduces an important discussion - do all species respond similarly to 1080? The answer is almost certainly no; it is likely, but not proved that humans are less susceptible and so need a higher dose to give the same effect as in, for example, dogs.
However, based on dog studies about 0.4 mg taken by mouth would kill a 5kg infant. This is a very low dose - enough to just about see. Studies in rats, on the other hand, suggest that 0.4mg would harm, but not kill a child. I have introduced this toxicological conjecture to illustrate that we don't know how much 1080 is needed to kill or harm a child, but that the dose is likely to be very low.
All of this means that very sensitive analytical methods are needed to test milk powder to decide whether it is safe. Such methods are reported to have been developed and applied to tens of thousands of milk powder samples. The negative findings should assure us that the supply chain is clean. And inspecting infant formula containers for evidence of tampering would identify any product that has been individually adulterated.
So, where does all this take us? On the negative side, we have a deranged individual who has written a letter threatening to add a highly toxic chemical to infant formula, and the amount of 1080 that might be added could easily kill a child.
On the positive side, we have a supreme surveillance scheme that has so far shown no adulteration; combined with vigilance in retail outlets to minimise the risk of someone tampering with individual containers of formula, and mums and dads checking that the containers of formula they purchase have not been tampered with. The risk of contaminated formula ending up in a baby's bottle is surely very low.
But this whole incident has heightened our awareness to what an evil person can do to make a point that they are passionate about.
