It’s October, and the holidays will be upon us before we know it. Seems the stores

forget about Thanksgiving; before Halloween is over, they put out the Christmasthings. I can’t really complain because I’ve always started my Christmas shopping

on Jan. 1st; then as I buy things, I hide them away and by Christmas I’ve forgotten

WHAT I’ve bought and WHERE they are.

An update from our

“fearless leader”

Ed Heinlein

Remember the little guy in the old "Lil’Abner" cartoon character whose first name was

"Joe" and whose last name as unpronounceable because it had no vowels, only

consonants? He always was messing up, so he was drawn with a black cloud constantly

hanging over his head.

Well, just call me "Joe Btfsplk! I have had another owie which has had me down for 10days and stands to continue for a while.

I severely injured my right big toe. It became infected. I have had IV antibiotics oralantibiotics. I can only hope that they are not looking for other places to get that stuff into

my body!

The bottom line is that I am house -bound and supposed to be bed ridden. I have tried towalk around a little bit, but t I the darned ankle immediately swells to almost twice

normal. And, worst of all, Vivian pulls out the bull whip and makes me return to bed

immediately!

I do hope to get back to “normal” in the next week, or so. I am very excited about some

of the work the Scholarship Committees have under discussion.

  From Sharon’s Kitchen . . .

Fall is my favorite time of year  — a new crop of apples, crisp air, and fabulous colors of the landscape. But, when those fabulous colors drop to the ground and have to be raked

up into piles and discarded, please take it slow and don’t over -do. Here’s a slow-cooker

recipe that’s easy to put together and will be ready when you drag in from your “day of

accomplishment”. If you have 20 minutes of energy left, mix up a fresh apple crisp for

dessert. Happy fall! Sharon

CABBAGE-SAUSAGE DINNER(Serves 4)

1/2 green cabbage, cut in wedges

4 potatoes, quartered1 beef bouillon cube dissolved in

1 ½ cups of boiling water

1 can green beans

Salt & pepper to taste1 lb. smoked sausage

(German, Polish, kielbasa, etc.)

Place potatoes and cabbage wedges in bottom of crockpot. Season and pour bouillon over all.

Place sausage on top. Cook, covered, on low for 8 to 10 hours.

Add green beans the last 4 hours of cooking.

Apple Crisp(Makes an 8” square)

5-6 med. apples, Granny Smith or Jonathans, peeled and sliced

1 Tbsp. lemon juice

¾ cup firmly-packed light brown sugar

½ cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup finely-chopped walnuts¼ cup quick-cooking oats

1 tsp. cinnamon

¼ tsp. cloves

½ cup butter, cut into chunks

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray an 8” square baking dish with cooking spray. Toss apple

slices with lemon juice and place in prepared baking dish.

Mix brown sugar, flour, walnuts, oats, cinnamon and cloves together. With a pastry blender or

two knives, cut in butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Sprinkle over apples.

Bake 25 to 35 minutes until golden and bubbly. Serve warm topped with vanilla ice cream .

Health Updates

Terry Reynolds will be checking in at St. Luke’s Hospital on The Plaza in K.C. early next month for

heart surgery. Knee time, folks! I will keep you up to date on his progress. All our prayers will be with

you, Terry.

Bobbie (Andes) Monahan has been hospitalized recently; we just got word she’s been released.Being the good friend that she is, Sharon (Barker) Melich heads out (10/2) to help a friend:Hi, gang: Just a note to let you know that Bobbie is home and I’m flying to Georgia Sunday morning. I plan on being down there about 10 days and will report when I get back. Pleaseput us in “The God Can”, Marilyn, for Bobbie’s health and a safe trip for me. Love to all,Sharon

After receiving Sharon’s message, we get this one from Pat (Damsgard) Hoglund (10/1) …

Hi gang. Bobbie called me yesterday afternoon to say thank you for the cards and just gab. Sharon, she's SO excited you're coming! She sounded great and definitely UP. Breathing good and using her

walker. I haven't heard that much excitement in her voice in a long time. She said Steve will be a lot

more relieved at knowing Sharon's there to watch over her while he works. Have a great time

Sharon. We'll be thinking of you two............... Love, Pat (Sharon reported back in K.C. Sun, 10/9)

Joyce Bailey was admitted to St.Luke’s Hospital on The Plaza for ablation heart surgery on Thurs.

10/13. After an overnight stay, she was dismissed to recuperate at home. More knee time, folks!

Now for MY health update … we’re all fine, just a few aches and pains that will soon go away. However, we

were very lucky and praise God for watching over us! On Saturday, Oct.1st, our son Bob, Carl and I were

driving to Holden to watch Bob’s son, Tristan, play football. I was driving, we were about 5 miles north of Holden on Hwy 131, when the pickup truck in front of us decided to go from 55 mph to STOP in about 2

seconds! I slammed on the brakes and held on … about all I had time to do. When we asked the other driver

why she stopped, she said she didn’t want to hit the dog crossing the road in front of her. I was really glad she

admitted to that, because the State Trooper gave HER the ticket! Needless to say, our little Toyota didn’t

come out of it as well as the 3 of us did. (And the dog never knew how close he came to proving “All Dogs Go

to Heaven.”)

Luckily, also, my Pitt State Football front license plate was spared :)

And from the mailbox . . .

Paula (Young ’59) Morris identifies some of the Pep Club initiates from the Sept issue of

the Hi-Life II . . . Marilyn, I loved this issue of the newsletter! So many memories! You remember that sophomores wereinitiated by upperclass members into the Pep Club; the picture is a hilarious reminder! I'm the cannibal in

front (Geraldine Wahl was responsible for that!). I'm next to Elvis (Jiffy Spurck). I think that Cindy

Wenzel is the 'witch.' Those are the only ones I recognize--oh, Susan Huber is the far left of back row. We

also had to do something in the all-school assembly devoted to the initiation antics--sing to someone, skit,

etc. And, yes, the dance always followed the game--it took me forever to get all that black stuff off in

time for the game and dance!!

When did today's kids get too sophisticated to have fun?!

I'm so happy for the long-overdue honor for Bud Hertzog! As the article states, he and the entire Hertzogfamily were among the pillars of First Baptist Church. I remember attending Bud and Betty Lou's (Shull)

wedding! The young adults in FBC were great role-models for us younger people!

Another wonderful newsletter, Marilyn (and Ed)! I'm thrilled to be included in your mailings. Thanks!

Paula Young Morris

Here’s a “heads-up” from Marilyn Pruyn; start making your vacation plans right now! …

Just this week reserved the LSHS cafeteria for June 10, 2012 for the next “Golden 50” Reunion, so

planning will begin after first of the year for that event. Marilyn

An update on the exciting Cibolo,TX, neighborhood of Pat (Damsgard) Hoglund (10/1) …

Wow, it's up to 83 degrees! Beautiful day. Still no rain. Channye and Dave (neighbors) are home fromtheir long trip and she called to tell me their mailbox is gone. The lid to it was clear across the road and

there was foil, paper etc. scattered around. The one on each side of theirs had foil and a few dents on

them.................told her to call the cops. She did and they sent a deputy out who suspects vandalism by

teens. Maybe a cherry bomb. What a deal. Must have happened this morning sometime.

So have you guys had any excitement?!?!? If not, come on down. You can watch the excitement and

dry out! LOL Pat (Damsgard) Hoglund

Pat also shares a couple of good recipes she’s tried, along with this message from her . . . “I

don't care if you use this in the NL's or not but they're good to have on hand. I'm planning on using the

Hollandaise sauce over asparagus tomorrow night!”

Hollandaise Sauce

1/2 c. butter

2 egg yolks

1 T lemon juice

1/3 C. boiling water

1/2 t salt

Combine 1/3 of butter with egg yolks and lemon juice. Place over hot water. Stir constantly until butter

is melted. Add another third of butter, continue stirring until sauce is thick. Add remaining butter. Add

boiling water gradually. Cook one minute longer and add salt. If sauce should curdle because of too

high temp or too long cooking, very slowly and 1 T hot water, beating with a rotary beater.

Bechamel Sauce (to top off Moussaka) - or however you spell it!

2 T butter, melted

2 T flour

1 C chicken stock

1/4 t salt

1/8 t pepper

1/2 C cream or evaporated milk

Blend butter and flour until smooth. Gradually add stock, stirring constantly. Cook over low heat until

thick and smooth. Add salt and pepper. Add cream just before serving. Pat Hoglund

And later . . .

This afternoon I looked out the kitchen window (which I do about 900 times a day) and saw a coyote

roaming around out there. I went out to protect Celia (cat) and talked to him (the coyote). It was

cool. He stopped and turned to look at me! Whoa. I then clapped my hands and yelled whoohoo and

he went back into the pasture behind us where I'm sure is safer than the way he was headed. Dove

season is going on and someone might mistake him? for a dove?

We've got 2 small doves that Wayne told us were from Mexico and if you shoot one, it'll cost you

$2000. No problem with us shooting one. Used to have 100+ here daily and as soon as they started

shooting our population shrunk to 3. I keep trying to tell them to STAY HERE and be safe but like kids,

they don't listen......... Pat

p.s. Fixed the Hollandaise sauce and it was glorious. Also fixed cabbage rolls and can't stay out of

them! Good recipe. I'll send it later..........remind me. I'm in the throes of refrigerator hell right now!

The following was shared with us by Joyce Bailey . . .

A true lady of our generation … Julie Andrews turns 70!

To commemorate her 70th birthday, actress/vocalist,

Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Radio CityMusic Hall for the benefit of the AARP. One of the

musical numbers she performed was 'My Favorite

Things' from the legendary movie 'Sound Of Music'.Here are the lyrics she used: (sound better when sung)

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,

Bundles of magazines tied up in string,

These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,

Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,

These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,

When the knees go bad,

I simply remember my favorite things,

And then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,

No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,

These are a few of my favorite things...

Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin',Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',

And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,

When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache, When the hips break,When the eyes grow dim,

Then I remember the great life I've had,And then I don't feel so bad.

(Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes)

The Herde’s are “on the road again!” . . .

We left Lee's Summit Sept. 26th. Stopped two days in St. Louis to see the Mueller's (Dale has had some majorhealth problems - doing well now). We then went to Bremen, Indiana for a Mandalay Rally with 46 coaches allalike!! We experienced 39' (coldest place in the U. S. proper after a 6" rain). After that five day rally - we moved toGoshen, Indiana for the Thor (manufacture of our RV) Rally. They had something planned for most hours of your dayfor the next six days.

We arrived at Sandra and Sue's Sunday Oct. 9th. They live about 20 miles from Washington D.C. I (Dee Ann) camedown with a sinus infection which has slowed us down some. Girl's have a lovely home - we've parked our RV intheir drive. Traffic around here is awful ! Girls met us on the freeway and led us in.

Since we wanted to travel to Sandra's and winter in Florida - we're on the road. There is also the decision to try anddown size - house is now on the market with Toni Tygart, Re Max - closets & drawers cleaned - had a garage saleand have asked the Lord to lead us to our next home or will stay and enjoy this one.

We talked last year about maybe we should have the family Christmas at our home. Ed's leg problem makes itdifficult for him to walk on the snow / ice and for two years we've had weather problems for Christmas and delayedtraveling south. We will miss Christmas with the family but - come on to Florida and find us.

Prayer partners - Morris Herde - broken hip, - Aunt Lois - heart, - Aunt Thelma - age etc. Thanks for your prayers.

Friends and Family - if you receive this e-mail, you know we've prayed for you. We miss home but wanted to see andbe with those that are close to our hearts while we are able to travel.

God bless you all.  Our love,  Dee Ann and Ed

Judy (Yeaman) DeTar Hicks found time in her busy life to let us know what she’s been up to . . .

Hi Marilyn. Hope this is your current e-mail. I keep promising to send something for NL. --time runs away. I know itdoes for most people anymore.

The summer went too quickly...yet most of it was enjoyable. Bill and I did a lovely trip through Yellowstone Nat'lPark. We saw most of that beautiful country between Colorado and Wyoming and Montana at a leisurely

pace. Spent the night going to Yellowstone at Lander, WY. Covered some of the same territory that I had enjoyedthere in 1993 when I did the week-long covered wagon trip on the Oregon Trail. (But that is another story).

Yellowstone is fantastic. My first trip there. We covered it all....but in truth there is too much to see and appreciate in just a week. We did a day in Cody...loved the museum there. Spent a day in Jackson Hole... Ate lunch at JacksonLake Lodge watching herd of elk outside the huge glass windows with a panoramic view. On our whole trip we sawnumerous buffalo (bison), elk, moose at a distance, and a black bear (at a distance). The week there went tooquickly.

On returned home via Salt Lake City for visit with daughter Marcia and family. (Hard to believe my baby girl is 50years old this year.)

First week in September both my kids met me in Missouri to help put together party for my mother to celebrate her90th birthday. Several family members came from around the state and a cousin from California. All was asuccess. Nice to see several of my cousins that I had not seen in many years. Good time .

The other part of summer was spent working in home repairs...painting interior of house, foundation repair, tuck-pointing of brick, etc....the list goes on and on....just like everyone else. I love my little cottage in the middle ofDenver (Hobbit Houses here in this area my neighbor calls them); but like the rest of us fine older women---sheneeds a fair bit of attention.

No plans for any international travel this year ahead.--not to say it won't happen... But we are taking the 5th wheel toArizona (middle of December) for the winter, and we will probably do a southern California trip.

Haven't managed to corral the Colorado '57 grads for a gathering so far this year. But year not quite over. There isstill hope. I talk to Eve (Cook) Hoygaard, but we haven't had luck in getting this year's birthday (May) lunch/dinnerorganized. You would think being in same town we could work it out. But again, the year is not over.

I am off this morning for another Missouri trip. Trying to get arrangements made for my mother to go to assistedStay well. I enjoy seeing a jot or two on what you are up to on Facebook. Happy October,Judy Yeaman DeTarHicks

And Eve (Cook) Hoygaard also sends us news from Colorado . . .

Fall in Colorado is so amazingly beautiful from my perspective. Love the warm, bright sunshine/brilliant blue skiesand white fluffy clouds followed by crisp cool nights! Of course, sometimes the white fluffy stuff is snow! Anyway, weare having a truly beautiful fall here. Did get up in the mountains to see the fall colors but still have flowers in bloomso, I love fall. It is hard to believe that 2011 will soon be over. This year has flown by.

I guess I may soon have to say that I am retired since I turned down a great position last week. But, as of now, I just say I am currently unemployed. I do still miss my clinical practice. When you can honestly say you loved thework you have done for many years, it is very difficult to say it is all behind you.

Happiness is a beloved grandchild telling you that her first semester college grades are all A's. Eve

LuAnn (Mrs.Jack ’58) Smith also sent me a picture of the quilts she’s been making . . .

Like my Gingham Dogs and Calico Cats? I made them for Jack's sister Kay's great-grandchildren. Thedark blue is for a two-year old boy and the pastel one is for the baby boy due in December. LuAnn

And after I wrote back, telling her how talented she is, I received this message . . .

Hi again, Marilyn,

Thanks for the updates and the compliments. I am now making a quilt of appliquéd vintage cameras for

my grandson, who is a Junior film student at NYU, This is quite a challenge! I hope I can finish beforeChristmas! My daughter-in-law also wants a yo-yo coverlet. Goodness, I haven't made any yo-yos sincemy grandmother kept me busy with them as a child. I guess maybe they are back in style.

Mother's 100th Birthday Celebration was a nice affair. There were about 40 of us in attendance. Thanksto all who sent cards. I've attached a newspaper article. You'll probably need to rotate it to readit. Mother is quite the character! LuAnn

Margaret (Davis) Offen sends us an update . . .

Just a note to let you know Tom went back to work today and is feeling so much better.

Really don't have too much to write about this time for the nl. Just that we are back to normal now. We

had a great time at the gtg at Joyce's a couple of weeks ago. I didn't realize that it was their 50th

reunion. Just wish more of the class of 57 had been there.

We are going to try and go fishing the end of the month (first time this year) and catch some of the big

crappie we usually catch at the end of October. Don't really know if tom can handle the weight of the

anchors as he's not supposed to lift anything heavier than 10# and they weight 20# so guess it will be up

to me to do all the work this time. It was either too hot or too windy for us to fish this year and the

summer went by so fast. We will have to meet for lunch one day soon. Take care, Margaret

As Margaret mentioned …  The “Peery Family” (Joyce ’61, Carolyn ’58, in memory of Fred ’57)

held a 50th

Reunion kickoff party on Fri., Sept.30th

, for the Class of 1961 at the home of Joyce. I

think they must have had around 200 or more attending … great turnout. I saw people from mostall classes from 1954 thru 1961, maybe even other classes I missed. Here’s just a few photos:

We all had a great time visiting with old friends! Thanks Joyce & Carolyn for including

a great time visiting and catching up and making new memories. Then in August, Jim/Marilyn and Cecil/I

celebrated theirs/ours anniversary and had a good time visiting with them for a few days.

Our real anniversary date was Oct 7th, and we had a firepit bonfire celebration the weekend before with

our kids and grandkids roasting hotdogs and eating good food and enjoying everyone's company.

Thank you all for the cards and phone calls and we LOVE the newsletters. We are enjoying each day with
