The transmitters use a universal BNC socketfor quick and secure connection to any elec-trode with a BNC connector.

For HI8614 and HI8614L the temperaturecompensation is performed by the transmitter'sATC circuitry if the temperature probe(HI 76608, optional) is attached. If ATC is notrequired, it is possible to substitute the tem-perature probe with a fixed resistor.

The input is isolated from the current loop toeliminate problems related to ground loop, low insulation cables, multiple electrode con-nections, and a common mode voltage of upto 100 V ensures true differential readings.

The terminal board of the transmitter providesfor connection of power supply, pH or ORPelectrodes and temperature probe (for HI8614and HI 8614L models only).

The unit is enclosed in a protective casingconforming to IP 65 standards.

pH CALIBRATION WITH AUTOMATICTEMPERATURE COMPENSATION

(HI 8614 & HI 8614L)

Initial preparation

• Connect the pH electrodeto the BNC socket.

• Connect the temperatureprobe to the transmitter.

Pour small quantities of pH 7.01 and pH 4.01solution into two clean beakers.

For accurate calibration use two beakers foreach buffer solution, the first one for rinsingthe electrode, the second one for calibration.

To get accurate readings, use pH 7.01 andpH 4.01 if you are going to measure acidsamples or pH 7.01 and pH 10.01 for alkalinemeasurements.

Note: with HI8614L the instruments displaycan be used during calibration withoutthe need to connect the ammeter andthe reading is directly expressed in pHunits.

The wire between the transmitter and therecorder/indicator/controller should be a PVCinsulated two wire with a wire diameter of atleast 0.7 mm. This wire is fed through one ofthe smaller cable glands. The maximum dis-tance between the power supply and theamplifier is 300 m (1000'). It is not necessaryto use shielded cable. The transmitter isprotected against inversion of supply voltage.

Electrode connection: connectthe BNC of the cable to the BNCsocket on the transmitter.

For HI8614 & HI8614L only: forautomatic temperature com-pensation, connect the 2 termi-nals of the temperature probe(HI 76608, optional) to "TEMP.PROBE" terminals. If automatic temperature compensation is notrequired, short the "TEMP.PROBE" terminals with a resis-tance according to the externaltemperature:

SLOPE ADJUSTMENT

OFFSET ADJUSTMENT

• If the reading lies outsidethis range, adjust the slopeadjustment trimmer on thetransmitter for a reading justwithin this range.

The unit is now calibrated.

A complete calibration of the transmitter mod-ule is advised periodically.

This calibration procedure requires the HI 8427or the HI 931001 pH and ORP simulator tosimulate the ORP electrode.

HI 8427 or HI 931001 produce a known signalinto the system so that the faults of thesystem can be isolated.

• Connect the ORP transmitter to the simu-lator.

• Set the simulator to 0 mV and adjust theoffset trimmer to read 12 mA on the am-meter or 0 mV on the HI 8615L display (HI8615L only).

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

Inspect the electrode and the cable. The cableused for connection to the meter must beintact and there must be no points of brokeninsulation on the cable or cracks on the elec-trode stem or bulb. Connectors must be per-fectly clean and dry. If any scratches or cracksare present on the electrode body, replacethe electrode. Rinse off any salt deposits withwater.

For refillable electrodesRefill it with fresh electrolyte (HI7071 for singlejunction or HI7082 for double junction elec-trodes). Allow the electrode to stand uprightfor 1 hour.Follow the Storage Procedure above.

CLEANING PROCEDURE

General Soak in Hanna HI7061 generalcleaning solution for approxi-mately 1 hour.

Removal of films, dirt or deposits on the mem-brane/junction:

Protein Soak in Hanna HI7073 proteincleaning solution for 15 minutes.

Inorganic Soak in Hanna HI 7074 inorganiccleaning solution for 15 minutes.

Oil /grease Rinse with Hanna HI7077 Oil &Fat cleaning solution.

IMPORTANT: After performing any of thecleaning procedures rinse the electrode thor-oughly with distilled water, drain and refill thereference chamber with fresh electrolyte, (notnecessary for GEL filled electrodes) and soakthe electrode in HI70300 storage solution forat least 1 hour before taking measurements.

"shaking down" the electrode as you woulddo with a glass thermometer. If the bulb and/or junction are dry, soak theelectrode in HI70300 storage solution for atleast one hour.

For refillable electrodesIf the fill solution (electrolyte) is more than1 cm (½") below the fill hole, add HI70823.5M KCl electrolyte solution for double junc-tion or HI7071 3.5M KCl+AgCl electrolytesolution for single junction electrodes. For afaster response unscrew the fill hole screwduring measurements.

For AmpHel® electrodesIf the electrode does not respond to pHchanges, the battery is run down and theelectrode should be replaced.

MEASUREMENT

Rinse the electrode tip with distilled water.Immerse the tip (4 cm / 1½") in the sampleand stir gently for approx. 30 seconds. For a faster response and to avoid crosscontamination of the samples, rinse the elec-trode tip with a few drops of the solution to betested, before taking measurements.

STORAGETo minimize clogging and assuring a quickresponse time, the glass bulb and the junc-tion should be kept moist and not allowed todry out. Replace the solution in the protectivecap with a few drops of HI70300 storagesolution or, in its absence, filling solution(HI7071 for single junction or HI7082 fordouble junction electrodes). Follow the Prepa-ration Procedure above before taking mea-surements.

Note: NEVER STORE THE ELECTRODE INDISTILLED WATER OR DRY.

2322

TEMPERATURE-RESISTANCECORRELATION FOR HANNA

pH SENSITIVE GLASS

The resistance of glass electrodes partiallydepends on the temperature. The lower thetemperature, the higher the resistance. It takeslonger time for the reading to stabilize if theresistance is higher. In addition, the responsetime will suffer to a greater degree at tem-peratures below 10°C.

Since the resistance of the pH electrode is inthe range of 200 Mohm, the current acrossthe membrane is in the pico Ampere range.Large currents can disturb the calibration ofthe electrode for many hours.

For these reasons high humidity environ-ments, short circuits and static dischargesare detrimental for a stable pH reading.

The pH electrode's life also depends on thetemperature. If constantly used at high tem-peratures, the electrode life is drastically re-duced.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Evaluate your electrode performance basedon the following.

• Noise (Readings fluctuate up and down)could be due to:

- Clogged/Dirty Junction: refer to theCleaning Procedure above.

- Loss of shielding due to low electrolytelevel (in refillable electrodes only): HI7071for single junction or HI7082 for doublejunction electrodes.

• Dry Membrane/Junction: soak inHI70300 storage solution for at least onehour.

• Drifting: soak the electrode tip in warmHanna solution HI7082 for one hour andrinse the tip with distilled water. Refill withfresh HI7071 for single junction electrodesand HI7082 for double junction electrodes.

• Low Slope: refer to the Cleaning Proce-dure above.

• No Slope: check the electrode for cracksin glass stem or bulb and replace theelectrode.

• Slow Response/Excessive Drift: soak thetip in Hanna HI7061 cleaning solution for30 minutes, rinse thoroughly in distilledwater and then follow the Cleaning Proce-dure above.

INSTALLATION PROCEDUREAND EXAMPLES

The HI 8614, HI 8614L, HI 8615 and HI 8615Ltransmitters may be wall mounted in any con-venient location near the measurement point. To minimize thermal drift due to extreme tem-perature fluctuations during the measurementprocess, particularly if the measurement isconducted outdoors, it is best to protect thetransmitter in an enclosed casing.

General Installation Procedure

For most industrial application involving longterm monitoring and control, it is also recom-mended to use tank electrode holders (HI 6050or HI6051) to protect the pH electrode and thetemperature probe from contamination by thetest solution.
