Membership Update
I usually give you a recap of the previous year in this newsletter edition. However
this year I am just going to say thank you for making 2019 another successful year.
Actually, I am going to use the words of George Hormel’s brother, Herman, to say
thank you. In 1907 he published an ad in the Austin Daily Herald telling his
customers how much he appreciated their support.
“We wish to say to the people of Austin that we have just closed a
very successful business year, and we take this way to thank all
who have patronized us and helped to make it so. We feel well
repaid for our effort in trying to furnish all our customers with
the best in our line, and to render the best possible services. One
of our resolutions for 1907 is to put forth a greater effort to
render more efficient service and to be a better servant to the
people. Again thanking you for past
favors and soliciting your
cooperation in the coming year we
are, Most Respectfully Yours.”
I echo his sentiments and promise to
bring you our best in the year 2020
ahead.

8th Annual Foodie Throwdown Fundraiser
The Autism Advocate….

The Autism educational outreach programming at the HHH has celebrated its 10th anniversary year with much
momentum. In addition to the three established summer day camps and three monthly respite/rec night
activities, we now have a 37 Certified Autism Friendly businesses or organizations.
We hosted the first annual ASD educational symposium in June, 2019 with over 85 in attendance. With the
guidance of a young woman with autism who serves on our ASD programming committee we hosted our first
social event aimed at the young adult ASD population in our community in September. The event, a Cos-Play Social,
attracted an enthusiastic group of young people who appreciated being about to express themselves and socialize in
costume. In December, the HHH hosted the first annual Family Sensory Friendly Holiday event. The momentum
continues to grow and we are excited to continue offering services.
2020 holds many opportunities to increase collaborative efforts to reach goals of increased awareness of ASD, and
improved educational and community involvement outcomes for those impacted.

General Eisenhower once stated that he firmly
believed that the war could not have been won
without the women. They played a strategic part in
the allied effort and in other wars as well. Through art
and story, this program will tell of the vital role of
women in war efforts.
Monday, March 9 - Schoolhouse Memories
Presented by Doug Ohman
Travel back as Doug brings you to a time when all
eight grades were in one classroom. Reminisce about
school lunch, recess and of course “the three R’s”. The
stories and photographs will make you smile and
laugh.

Contest & Concert
Saturday, March 7, 2020 Musicians on a variety of instruments are
invited to participate in this fun casual contest
meant to inspire and educate young talent.
Youth ages 6-18 are invited to register at the
Hormel Home or online ~ $20 per entry
Registration due by February 17, 2020
Prize pool of $3,200 will be awarded
Public Concert to showcase the top 16
musicians will be held at 4p.m. at the Historic
Paramount Theatre.

HHH….where the past inspires the present….
Although I am not sure George and Lillian would approve, we have a new family artifact on display in the Hormel Historic Home Atrium. The Mower County Historical Society has gifted to our collection a card playing table that once belonged to Jay Hormel. I say George and Lillian most likely wouldn’t approve of such a piece of furniture in their home because George, based on personal experience, saw the dangers of a life filled with gambling.
George wrote in his autobiography, The Open Road, “…poker served a purpose. I began to see what a life on the road, with no anchors to windward, would do to me if I continued indefinitely this pleasant here-today-and-gone-tomorrow existence…Even if I won, the game consumed time I could put to better use.”
