Not many towns in this country have history as long and storied as Hurley’s. Even fewer have a Main Street that is as old and well

preserved. And I don’t know of any that have a sense of community stronger than ours. These three factors combine to provide our town with an organization and a museum that works year-round to bring local history to the people of Old Hurley, Glenford, and West Hurley. This is done by sponsoring communi-ty events that draw people to the museum, creating exhibitions that focus on topics of local interest, and being a repository for historical images and docu-ments. All this is powered by a team of enthusiastic and talented volunteers from across the town.

The Nash Archive

If you are here enjoying Hurley Heritage Day, you probably already know something about the Hurley Heritage Society. But I want to take you back to the origins of the Society and events leading up to its founding. More than 100 years ago, in the early decades of the 20th century, there was no Hurley

Museum. However, there were people who recognized the importance of Hurley as an early Dutch colonial settlement and a player in the founding of our coun-try. Dr. George W. Nash was one of these people. He lived in the Van Deusen House at 59 Main Street, the house that was the temporary seat of the New York State Senate after the burning of Kingston. He was a retired physician and devoted his time to photograph-ing historic structures, collecting original documents and artifacts, and researching local history. Dr. Nash contributed articles to the Olde Ulster magazine. After his death around 1921, his papers were donated to the New York Historical Society in New York City. The Nash collection includes 428 manuscripts, 167 maps, and an album of his own photographs, all re-lating to the early days of Marbletown, Hurley, and Kingston. I have a dream that one day this trove will be returned to Hurley where it belongs.

Year of History

Sixty years ago in 1959, Hurley celebrated New York State’s “Year of History” as part of the national Hudson-Champlain celebration, marking the 350th anniversary of the exploratory voyages in 1609 of Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain. By this time, another resident had stepped up to the role of unofficial town historian. Local resident and antiques dealer Stephen Waligurski took the lead of the Hurley Hudson-Champlain Festival Committee. A series of ten souvenir journals called the Hurley Historian were published throughout the year. The festival events were a testament to the enthusiasm and creativity of Hurley residents: George Washington visit reenact-ment, stamp exhibit, historical manuscript display, Festival Chorus, publication of the cookbook Kitchen Kaas, two performances of the Hurley Cantata, com-munity picnic, Stone House Day, Antique Show,

Corn Festival, Art Show, a country auction, and a vis-it by HRH Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands. It was an epic year for Hurley.

The events were a resounding success. The cantata was written and directed by Stephen’s wife Carolyn Waligurski and featured ten original songs. The Corn Festival was Hurley’s first with 30 bushels of sweet corn donated by the Paul, Gill, and Hasbrouck farms. It was held in the open meadow southwest of the church where now there is a driver training school and attended by a crowd of 1,600 people. Ray Lyke earned the title of champion corn husker by peeling thirty-four ears in seven minutes. Twelve-year-old Vaughan Askue, a budding engineer, became the talk of the town by winning the contest for guessing the number of corn kernels in a large glass jar. He mea-sured that big jar, scurried home, counted kernels in a small jar, and ran the math!

Birth of the Hurley Heritage Society

During the 1959 celebration, there was talk of the unkempt appearance of the Olde Burying Ground

just north of Main Street. It was several years later that three women of the village met to discuss the on-going problems of vandalism and neglect: Iris Oseas, Barbara Paul, and Nancy Winter. Iris suggested they contact the local historical society. She was promptly informed, “There is none!” So they started an in-formal group around 1970, meeting in the Hurley Reformed Church. Having no place of their own, they rented display space in the Ostrander-Elmendorf House across from the current museum. One of their first fundraising events was an “antiques road show.” Residents were invited to bring in antiques and arti-facts. Local antiques dealers were recruited to assess the treasures. They were amazed at what they saw, for example, the original Hurley village minutes from 1662! The group continued to grow and thrive, and by 1974, they were ready to form the non-profit called Hurley Heritage Society (HHS).

Home, Sweet Home

In 1980, HHS held its first Corn and Craft Festival to raise funds for acquiring their own build-

ing, no doubt inspired by the 1959 event. Twenty years of these festivals along with barn sales and the sale of handmade artifacts raised enough money for the cash purchase of the Col. Jonathan Elmendorf house in year 2000. It was a long-awaited and excit-ing moment for HHS. Not resting on its laurels, HHS continued to devel-op its educational programs and earned its provisional charter from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York in 2002 and its absolute charter in 2010. HHS con-tinues to maintain its museum at 52 Main Street with changing exhibits and a repository for Hurley-

Music Acts

Jay & Molly It started with a chance meeting in the late 1970s when Jay and Mol-ly were each performing at the Towne Crier. They hit it off musically and played together from time to time until Molly headed off to Minnesota to work in the house band of a new radio show: Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. Back in New York, Jay put together a band called Fiddle Fever, and when they needed a bassist, Molly signed on.

The early ’80s saw the beginning of Jay’s Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps, a world-renowned destination for enthusiasts of American music and dance traditions. Several years later, Molly became a full partner in designing and running these programs, which are still go-ing strong. In 1984, the high point to date of the long Fiddle Fever relationship was the selection of Ashokan Farewell as the main theme of Ken Burns’ landmark PBS documentary The Civil War. The result: an Emmy nomination for Jay and a Grammy for the soundtrack album. Now considered an American “folk” classic, it is played by fiddlers and classical musicians worldwide.

After signing with Angel Records in 1991, Jay and Molly released Amer-ican Dreamer and followed with Waltzing with You. Perhaps the duo’s best-known composition is the title track of The Lovers’ Waltz, an album of romantic fiddle music. Harvest Home, Jay and Molly’s 1999 release on Angel Records, culminates in their 20-minute orchestral work, The Harvest Home Suite. In 2002, Jay and Molly produced, arranged and performed on A Song of Home, a collaborative recording for RCA. With Relax Your Mind, Jay and Molly, with their band Swingology, take a slightly different direction: American dance music with a focus on country blues and swing.

On radio and television, Jay and Molly have appeared on CBS Good Morning, The Rosie O’Donnel Show, All Things Considered, A Prai-rie Home Companion, and the BBC’s Transatlantic Sessions. And they have no shortage of future musical projects.

Muddy Boots BandMuddy Boots Band is a trio performing Cajun/Zydeco, Roots Music, and traditional Irish music. Doctor Romo, Vida and Buffy offer up their old timey blend of music for your dancing and listening pleasure with guitar, fiddles, mandolin, accordions, and frottoir.

The Creepy UnclesIn 2014, a group of jam buddies got together to play a single gig, the NYC Marathon. Five years later they’re still having fun playing a handful of gigs a year and gearing up for their 6th Marathon appearance. The band is Ian Azrikan and Brian Mitchell on guitar, Mike Forgit on bass, and Mike Rice on drums, playing what they call 20th Century Rock & Roll. The politically incorrect name is what Mike’s daughter, Jessie, jokingly started calling the jam gang as a teenager.
