For any visual or technological projects the large screen format in Indian lake’s DL room is great!

Great equipment and access to technology.

Uses resources cooperatively. Allows new students in the class.

Teaching classes that other schools can’t offer as well as receiving classes that enhance local district programs.

Certainly bringing students together from other districts is beneficial.

It offers more opportunities for students that don’t always have opportunities especially in small schools.

My students and I are able to be exposed to students outside of our system.

1. What are the strengths of distance Learning?

If the aides are not organized or have trouble with the computer or fax it can be difficult.

Lengthy daily waiting time due to class time differences at the other site. Thus a lot of lost teaching time.

Not being able to look straight at students, having to monitor two separate groups of kids when talking about delicate subjects, not having all kids in an activity that is hands on, some of the students were immature for this sort of learning environment.

Often the material and issues explained were of a controversial, sensitive nature. Not being able to see students at remote sites well and read their body language and facial expressions affected the quality of and content of our discussions.

I found the set up of the DL to be a bit limiting for my natural teaching style. I was challenged to adapt lessons that could be cooperative or project driven. The monitors control the room set up. - LOST CLASS TIME!!! Students are missing classes too frequently due to field trips and assemblies. The current DL contract is not being adhered to in most schools.

2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning?

Make sure bell schedules are as close as possible.

All DL classrooms need their own high speed scanners (to cut down on wasted paper,) and an efficient method for exchanging papers. Also every DL needs a printer!

Students should have access to email when in a DL section. There should be a display of laptop monitors for a teacher to supervise appropriate use of the laptops. It should be standard that the TA's in the rooms are trained in classroom management.

More training about how to teach and less on the technical aspects.

More cameras. The ability to see each student better and consistently.

Better scheduling between schools and the cameras should zoom in on the students who are speaking and hold the gaze.

TAs need to be trained on their responsibilities and administrators need to understand that it is beneficial to have the same TA in the DL room all day otherwise lessons are not ready on time and papers do not get to the host site in a reasonable time.

3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes?

I built an enormous blackboard page.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the students in Johnsburg and I wish that I was able to spend more time with them in person.

Yes. It made me develop new and different teaching techniques that will make me a more well-rounded educator.

My class was very self conscious about seeing themselves on camera. Maybe they lacked the maturity at first. My local kids are freshmen, Minerva kids were juniors and seniors.

I was surprised at how well the grade levels melded together in a course of higher level literature. Some of the 9th graders were outstanding, absolutely on par with the 11th graders.

The Need for disciplining or removing students from other sites!

4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected?

Yes, computer software music theory program called Finale NotePad for composing music.

No, I use the internet and PowerPoint presentations option in my "traditional" classes too.

Yes, I found myself using more visuals.

Varied delivery of notes, median, and lecture.

Nothing that I did not previously use in my regular classroom. I wanted to use video conferencing but was unsuccessful finding a source that fit the bible as literature. I am hopeful that I might incorporate this element next year.

Work sheets on BlackBoard.

I tried to differentiate instruction using multi media videos as well as projects to help teach course content.

With blackboard and email, I was able to discuss assignments receive assignments and interact with my students. - I email quite frequently. I would like to try blackboard sometime.

No, my connecting site couldn’t have email set up for us to communicate with them.

I tried to encourage students to use my email to contact me out only one of them took advantage of it.

Email and field trips to both schools for students.

I used email on occasion. I tried blackboard but it was another layer of work and was difficult to maintain.

Fax, as students at remote schools do not have email addresses at school, and email for most host site students.

I would like to have had access to email with ALL students. It helps for a more expedient system of communication and feedback. Several students made use of email.

I visited my remote site once this year. The distance and timing would have required a substitute in my other classes, something I try to keep to a minimum.

I feel such a visit would be advantageous but my schedule would not allow for it.

I visited twice. It helps build relationships among students and between student and teacher.

I visited the sites once each this year. It gives me a chance to personally interact and get to know them. I also took the class on a Saturday field trip to Cornell University.

I visited St. Johnsville three times throughout the year and they came to Mayfield once. It keeps tremendously for the kids to meet and get to know each other early. They are more likely to talk and interact.

So far I have taken my class to Minerva once and that class has visited only once also. I would like to get them together more often
