HFA Spring Fling Egg Hunt Recap & Thank You! April 2015 By Michele Hulsman On March 28, 2015, the Hoboken Family Alliance (HFA) Annual Spring Fling Egg Hunt at Columbus Park drew over 800 attendees. It was quite chilly, but the children and their parents were bundled up and ready to take a stroll through the spring farm to collect their colorful eggs. They traded in their eggs to be reused and recycled for the continuous egg hunt and received a wonderful goody bag full of treats and surprises! We had many other exciting events for the children including a Bunny-hop, egg races and scavenger hunts, which were a delight for all of the children participating. To add to their wonder, the Easter Bunny made an appearance and happily posed for pictures. A “Guess the number of jelly beans” contest with two fabulous bicycles as prizes drew a total of 98 guesses (45 for the boy’s bike and 53 for the girl’s bike). Congratulations to Yves Dourdou and Ed Nutt for winning the boy’s bike and the girls’ bike, respectively. A big thank you to Freeholder, Anthony Romano for sponsoring the bikes again this year. A sincere thank you to all who have made this event possible, including : A&P, Ben & Jerry’s, Boogie Wipes, Edgewater Pediatric Dentistry, Enjoy Life, Fairytales Haircare, GoGo Squeeze Honey Stinger Fruit Chews, Houlihans, Lee Sims Chocolates (Jersey City), Dr. Lucy’s, Mary’s Gone Crackers, Nordic Naturals, Simply 7 Snacks, Vibrant Health, Whole Foods, Xclear -Xylitol candies. Your generosity is much appreciated and continues to make our events possible along with those of you who attend and participate. A huge thank you to Courtney Brennan Supple, Suzanne Hodges and Susan Phillips for braving the cold and helping us prepare for the event. We would like to thank our volunteers from the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity at Steven’s Institute of Technology as well for their assistance, along with Jon Tooke, Director of the Department of Public Safety and Chief Blohm, Fire Division Chief from the Hoboken Fire Department for allowing the the children to tour their Fire Engines. Parenting a Child with Food Allergiesby Alyssa Wachtler

Food allergies affect over 15 million people in the United States, which includes 1 in 13 children. Based on this statistic, chances are either your child or one of their friends or classmates will have a food allergy. People can be allergic to any food, but the most common allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. These foods are commonly referred to as the “Top 8” food allergens.

I never thought that my now 2 ½ year old son would have food allergies. Neither I nor my husband has known allergies to foods. However, just after his first birthday, we followed his pediatrician’s advice to introduce peanut butter. Within minutes, he had an allergic reaction that included swelling of his lips, eyes and hives. While I was not prepared that day, I am now very well prepared and always on guard regarding his allergies.

Looking back, there were early signs my son had food allergies. At around four months old, my son developed reflux. He also had severe eczema on the back of his knees. On occasion, he would develop a few small hives on his face at times he had not eaten or had not tried any new foods (I later found out this was from me eating peanut butter and then giving him kisses).

I ended up taking my son to a pediatric allergist to confirm which foods he was allergic to. He was given both a blood test as well as a scratch test (a test where the doctor pricks the skin with a small amount of the allergen and watches for a reaction). Based on these, it was determined my son was allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and eggs. Since this time, I have learned ways to keep my son safe while making sure he feels like your average toddler.

Having a child with food allergies makes you view things differently, such as, going on playdates, birthday parties, celebrating holidays, and grocery shopping. First of all, we never leave the house without our Benadryl and epinephrine auto injectors (such as EpiPen and Auvi-Q). These medicines are critical in the event of an emergency. We have a detailed plan from our allergist on how to recognize the signs of a reaction, and steps to follow to medicate him and get him care. We attend birthday parties with our own cupcakes, and bring snacks for our son everywhere we go. We have been fortunate to have a supportive network of family and friends who have been receptive to education on food allergies, and always check with us on reading food labels to make ensure what they are serving or bringing to gatherings is safe for our son. They now know the basics, such as reading the voluntary allergy labels “processed in a facility” and “made on shared equipment”.

To be honest, when my son was first diagnosed with his food allergies, I was upset and overwhelmed. I had looked for support in town, but came to realize that there were many families with children with food allergies, but no formal support network. This is how I came to found (along with Jenna Stock, the Registered Dietitian at Shoprite of Hoboken) the Hoboken Food Allergies Support Group.

Today, our son is an active, happy two and a half year old. We read him books about his allergies, and he knows which foods he can and cannot eat, and to ask us before accepting food from someone other than his parents. With preparation, we eat out often and also travel. Basically, we do our best to ensure his allergies do not hold him back or define him.

Hoboken Food Allergy Awareness Support Groupby Alyssa Wachtler, Jenna Stock and Courtney Supple

The Hoboken Food Allergy Awareness Support Group was founded by Alyssa Wachtler, a local Hoboken mom of a child with food allergies, and Jenna Stock, ShopRite of Hoboken’s Registered Dietician. Their goal was to create a group for parents of children with food allergies to share resources for keeping their kids safe and happy while managing their food allergies.

The group is a Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) recognized support group. And through FARE, it has access to the latest research and information regarding food allergies, as well as a public listing in their Support Group Directory. The group meets monthly to provide each other with support and to help navigate their children’s food allergies in everyday life, including birthday parties, grocery shopping, recipes, celebrating holidays and special occasions, attending schools and camps, eating out and play dates. They welcome guest speakers, who have included a board certified allergist, a member of FARE, a school social worker and a professionally trained chef.

The Hoboken Food Allergy Awareness Support Group is always looking for more members to share experiences, ideas and support. Meetings are held monthly at 7:00PM in the café section of ShopRite. For more information, please email [email protected] to join their mailing list and private Facebook group.

Additional resources: Visit the FARE website www.foodallergy.org for more information on food allergies, including updates on the latest research, as well as managing food allergies at many stages of life and everyday situations. You can also visit kidswithfoodallergies.org for more resources and information, including recipes for allergy-free cooking.

Non-Conventional Allergy Treatment with NAETBy Laura T. Brayton, D.C.

For allergy sufferers seeking relief, Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET) is a natural, safe, highly effective, and non-invasive alternative treatment to traditional medicine. Its founder Dr. Devi Nambudripad herself suffered from multiple allergies. Three decades ago, during an acupuncture session, she discovered that by physically contacting an allergen during a treatment that stimulates specific acupuncture meridian points, the necessary immune mediators are produced to neutralize the adverse reaction coming from the allergen.

This is possible because activation of appropriate points of the acupuncture meridians stimulate the central nervous system which in essence reprograms the brain. Thereafter, the body’s electromagnetic field is no longer negatively repelled to the allergen’s electromagnetic field and therefore, does not need to produce an immune response in defense.

By changing the body’s electrical charge through acupressure, the response to all items that once produced a negative symptom is positively altered. After the energy molecule of the allergen has completed its path through the body’s twelve meridians and leaves the body, it has now reset the nervous system to have a neutral or positive response to that allergen. Therefore, immediately following a NAET session, it is required that the patient comply with a 25 hour avoidance of the specific allergen being treated to allow it to complete its meridian journey.

It is fascinating to observe the clear difference in allergy reaction through kinesiology or manual muscle testing, which is an integral part of the NAET process. Before an allergen is treated, it is important to muscle test the patient holding the allergen to confirm its presence as well as muscle test the allergen on the next visit to be confident that it actually cleared and therefore, will no longer be symptomatic.

Another amazing aspect of NAET is how it can treat health conditions that may not be traditionally considered an allergic reaction. Patients suffering from depression, chronic back pain, headaches, and gastrointestinal complaints, for example, commonly are reacting to items in their environment but may not be considered an allergy because they do not exhibit the “traditional” itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, and coughing associated with an allergic response. Having been a NAET patient first and now practitioner, I am amazed daily at the positive impact NAET has in the life of my patients. I am thankful to Dr. Nambudripad for creating this vitally important technique that has transformed the health of thousands of patients world-wide.

To find a local NAET practitioner, go to www.NAET.com. Listen to an interview with Dr. Devi Nambudripad’s son, Dr. Roy Nambudripad, on my “Well-Adjusted Mama” podcast found on iTunes to learn more about the power of NAET, especially when used for fertility and with infants/children. The episode is entitled “Non-Conventional Allergy Treatment with NAET” and can be found at this link. http://bit.ly/1y4wlrJ
