FULL OF REVOLUTIONARY FUNCTIONS DESIGNED TO GIVEYOU AN ADVANTAGE, AND BACKED BY PERFOR-MANCE THAT WILL KEEP YOUR COMPETITION ONTHEIR TOES. ICOM TECHNOLOGY, STARTING ANEW DIMENSION.

HF/50 MHz ALL MODE TRANSCEIVER

THE DIGITAL REVOLUTIONJUST TOOK A HUGE LEAPFORWARD

It began with developing the ultimate in IF-DSP

HF transceivers with DSP are being intro-duced one after the other. Icom has takenthe lead over other transceivers by notjust using existing DSP, but in an effort tocreate the pinnacle in this technology, hasdeveloped an all new, original DSP unit.

Equipping the 32-bit Floating PointDSP— first in amateur equipment

The 32-bit Floating Point DSP— this DSPprovides a much wider and precise pro-cessing ability than 16-bit Fixed PointDSP, did with previous DSP transceivers. And also, the built-in 24-bit AD/DA con-verter helps to realizeultra wide dynamic rangeoperation. The result is,this unique Icom technol-ogy has made it possibleto realize unparalleledperformance, deservedlyfitting of the name ‘PRO’.

Taking the potential of the transceiverto heights unimaginable, until now.

The combination of the 32-bit FloatingPoint DSP and 24-bit AD/DA converter isloaded with superior digital functions neverbefore available with previous DSP units. With the DSP controlled AGC loop man-agement, it is now possible to achievepure digital functions. The digital IF filter, digital twin PBT and manual notch, theelimination of radio interference, unrivaledtransmission and reception S/N, ultra-lowdistortion transmission and reception tonequality etc., is delivered. The search byIcom for the ultimate HF transceiver, re-sulted in the 32-bit Floating Point DSP and

24-bit AD/DA converter, and brought to life in theIC-756PRO. The moststriking impression of theability of this technologyis without a doubt, theperformance of the digitalIF filter.

For the efficient operation of all functions.

In particular, people on the DX or contestfront lines demand instant response. So,Icom has incorporated a 5-inch TFT colorLCD in the IC-756PRO. The LCD, withsuperior visibility and various types of in-formation clearly defined, has been de-signed to lessen the burden of theoperator, while increasing accuracy andease of understanding.

We completely redesigned the wholetransmitter and receiver.

The IC-756PRO was designed to be the‘Ultimate HF Transceiver’. It is possible toupgrade and make a better machine fromthe previous IC-756. But it is even betterstill, to completely rethink and redesign, andin the process, create revolutionaryprogress in technology. It was this revolu-tionary thinking that lead to the creation andrealization of the ultimate in everything aDSP machine should be, the ‘IC-756PRO’.

32-bit floating point DSP

To dramatically increase the ability of alldigital functions in this all mode trans-ceiver, the latest technology has beenused and a newly designed DSP hasbeen created. The IC-756PRO, has em-ployed an originally designed 32-bit float-ing point DSP unit. Along with this, seesthe adoption of the 24-bit AD/DA con-verter making a formidable team withample capacity. Especially with the re-ceive signal input, the AD/DA converterprovides ultra wide dynamic range, 144dB*, of signal management. Clear signalswithout any distortion are realized even inany signal conditions, such as very weakor extremely strong signals from nearbystations. The DSP has extremely highperformance processing ability, which dra-matically improves signal resolution, aswell as both transmission and receptionS/N ratio, and allows more high perfor-mance features and properties.*theoretical value at digital operation stage.

AGC loop management

The digital IF filter, manual notch filter etc.are adopted in the AGC loop, and con-trolled by the 32-bit floating point DSP.This system removes blocking by ex-tremely strong adjacent signals in out offilter passbands. Therefore, you will neverhave to suffer blocking of the AGC again. The result is that even very weak signalscan be extracted from the noise level inbetween crowded strong signals clearly! In addition, the AGC time constant, (threepresettable slow, medium and fast) are flexi-bly adjustable for each operating mode tosuit operating band conditions, operatingstyle, etc.

RF speech compressor

The IC-756PRO has truly drawn the linebetween previous models and their stan-dard equipped compressors. The 32-bitcapacity provided from the DSP, allowsthe speech compressor to compress thetransmitter IF signal, therefore, averagetalk power is increased. This function ofcourse is effective for long distance com-munication, or when propagation condi-tions are poor. IC-756PRO keeps thelevel of distortion to it’s lowest extremity atmaximum compression. In turn this en-sures that your fellow ham enthusiastsare presented with quality readability. Inaddition, the transmit bandwidth is selec-table, regardless of the speech compres-sor activity, from 2.2, 2.4 and 2.8 kHz tosuit operating band conditions, etc.

Twin peak audio filter

A twin peak audio filter has been built in. 2specified audio frequencies only arepassed through the filter in the DSP foraccurately receiving an RTTY signal, for aprofound decoding rate. You will see adramatic improvement in the quality ofS/N, as well as removing interfering CWsignals, etc.

Edge cutting IF filter

The IC-756PRO is equipped with a digital IF filter that can be set from a total of 51passband widths. Unacheived with previous analog filters, the IC-756PRO fields anoutstanding inclusion with it’s shape factor. Sharply cutting in on any adjacent sig-nals. Besides this, the SSB filter will firstly respond to various digital modes, making

it possible to narrow a passband to 50 Hz.An optional filter no longer needs to be in-stalled at each stage to create a full filtercombination to suit your operating needs.

Microphone equalizer

In the high/low sound ranges, there are 11d i fferent levels respectively, which can setfrequency properties. Totalling 121 vari-eties equalized audio can be set with thebuilt in microphone audio equalizer. Suit-able transmit audio can be easily andfreely set using the equalizer according tooperating style, and your personal prefer-ence.

Manual notch capability

The 32-bit floating point DSP has also al-lowed the inclusion of possible manualnotch operation, as well as equipping cur-rent auto notch function. The manualnotch filter achieves more than 70 dB ofattenuation level, and with it’s sharp cut-ting characteristics, the manual notchfunction can accordingly be adjusted tobeat unwanted signals, while protectingthe desired signal— very weak signalsburied in extremely strong beat signals, can be received. Of course with the autonotch function, the notch frequency is au-tomatically adjusted to follow interferingbeat signals— reducing interference fromsweeping beat signals, etc.

DPSN

A digital PSN (Phase Shift Network) is em-ployed at the modulator using an original90˚ phase shifter architecture. The resultis consistently reproducible, clear andhigh quality transmit audio for all voice op-erations. In addition, the DPSN also al-lows SSB operation with superior carriersuppression and unwanted sideband re-jection ratio.

RTTY demodulator

The first in the world, the Baudot RT T Ydemodulator and decoder, boasting a su-perb decoding rate capability, is built-in.Of course, the received alphanumeric de-tails of RT T Y signal are indicated on theLCD display— you don’t need externalunits for RT T Y receiving any more! T h ebuilt-in tuning indicator, located at the topof the LCD, can visually recognize thetuning condition, and in combination withthe 1⁄4 speed dialling function, allows quickand simple zero-in, evenif you are new at or inter-ested in RT T Y r e c e i v i n g .

Digital noise reduction

The newly designed DSP digitally sepa-rates desired signal components fromnoise components. Outstanding signal tonoise ratio is achieved, providing clean, clear audio in SSB, easy-to-copy RT T Yand crisp, clear SSTV reception. In addi-tion, the digital noise reduction has con-tinuously adjustable noisesuppression capabilities—

complicated, high level ofalgorithms are instanta-neously managed by the32-bit floating-point DSP.

CW wave form

With the CW wave form being created inthe DSP— it now has been made possi-ble to materialize CW transmissions withdesired leading and trailing edge charac-teristics. The characteristics are selec-table from 4 available steps to suit youroperating style. 2, 4, 6 and 8 msec. char-acteristics are available

Spectrum scope

A real time spectrum scope is ideal formonitoring conditions around the dis-played frequency (including relative signalstrengths). With the main frequency dis-played at the center, the sweep frequencyrange (span) is selectable from four indi-vidual levels; ±12.5 kHz, ±25 kHz,±50 kHz, and ±100 kHz for convenient ob-servation at a glance. Furthermore, IC-756PRO’s spectrum scope sports full dotLCD features, including a peak hold func-tion that can set 2 contrasting colors if pre-ferred— Making distinction between bandseasy, and especially for detecting on airstations, has an unsurpassed capability.

Performing foundations

The IC-756PRO covers a wide frequencyrange, 30 kHz to 60 MHz (except some fre-quency bands), with superior performance.A wide dynamic range of 105 dB*, and ahigh intercept point of +23 dBµ*! Ofcourse, Icom’s original DDS (Direct DigitalSynthesizer) is adopted, and it provides asuperior C/N ratio.*Not guaranteed; Rx: 14.1 MHz, interferingfreq.: F1=14.2 MHz, F2=14.3 MHz; IF pass-band width=500 Hz

High frequency stability

A high stability crystal unit, CR-338, is usedfor the PLL ref-erence oscilla-tor, allowing±0.5 ppm (–10˚Cto 50˚C) of ex-tremely high sta-ble operation.

Digital voice memories

Weather you’re contesting or on a DX’-pedition, the digital voice memories are abuilt-in feature you’ll really appreciate. Atotal of 8 memories, 4 each for transmitand receive, with 15 sec. of storage spaceper location, use the recorder for callingCQ, reporting call sign, or any other con-tinuously repeated audio. Of courserecord and playback audio quality is re-markably high.

Highly stable transmitter

The IC-756PRO has a newly adoptedhigh rating power transistor (2SC5125 × 2)in the PA circuit, and with the realizationof superior IMD characteristics, this allmode transceiver easily ensures an out-put of 100 W. The SSB modulator hasalso been able to adopt the PSN modula-tor in the 32-bit DSP. This creates a 10 dBimprovement in the S/N ratio compared toprevious models. Advanced design con-siderations along with an aluminum, die-cast frame, and large cooling fan, help tostabilize the PA circuit providing this100%, full duty cycle operation.

Digital Twin PBT

Proving hard to beat, the IC-756PRO’sdigital twin PBT shows extraordinarysharpness of cutting in on interfering sig-nals. The twin PBT narrows the IF pass-band in one stage, and efficientlyeliminates any interfering signals limitingdelay in operation. The new digital twinPBT function is especially useful duringcrowded band conditions such as pileups, contests, etc. Of course, the twin PBTconditions, such as tuned value (50 Hzstep), direction, and passband width, areindicated on the LCD for easy recognition. This digital twin PBT will prove to be oneof those most vital functions when huntingfor DX stations.

5-inch TFT color LCD

The first in an HF transceiver! The IC-756PRO is Icom’sprized product, and has adopted a 5-inch TFT color LCD thatoffers a concentrated indication of various information rec-ognizable at a glance. 4 colors and 7 types of fonts can beselected at your personal preference. Separated into anupper and lower screen, the TFT color LCD will be sure tooffer that all important quick operation.
