Parents: Many dog bites in children occur in the absence of adults. When an adult is present, many of the situations that lead to biting can be avoided.

So, never:

•Runawayfromadog.

•Hugadog,especiallyaroundtheneck.

•Stareatadog.

•Playroughorpretendtofight withadog.

•Teaseadog.

•Yellorthrowthingsatadog.

Stay away from dogs that are:

•Notwithanadult.•Appeartobesad,mad,

or unfriendly.

•Behindafenceorinacar.

•Eating,sleeping,orchewing on a bone or toy.

• Injuredornursingpups.

•Working,suchasapolice dog or seeing-eye dog.

Alwaysasktheowner’spermission before trying to pet a dog.

If you get permission to pet the dog:

1. First,letthedogsniffyourclosedhand.

2. Thenslowlypetthedogontheside oftheneck.Donotattempttopetadog on the top of the head.

Did you know?Most dogs that bite are males, and bites occur more frequently during the warmer months, in late afternoon or early evening.

And never offer a dog food without the owner

•Donotstare at the dog.

Act like a log!

•Makeafistwithyourhandsandplacethembehind your head.

•Coveryourearswithyourforearms.

Parents: Explain to your child that if he or she stays still, the dog will likely lose interest and go away.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If you ever have a problem with a strange dog, tell an adult.

•Spendtimewithadogbeforebuyingoradoptingit.

WHAT CAN A PARENT DO? Once you own a dog:

•Askyourveterinarianfortipsonsocializingand training your dog.

•Teachyourdogobedientbehavior.

•Neverleaveinfantsoryoungchildrenalonewithanydog.

•Considerthefactthatdogsthathavebeenspayedor neuteredarelesslikelytobeaggressive.

• Immediatelyseekprofessionaladvice ifyourdogdevelopsaggressiveor undesirablebehaviors.
