This is a verbatim typed copy of the
small book on the Payne Family which
is out of print. I made it for use
in my files as I had so much material
in my County Record files on the Paynes
and was constantly running into this
name in working on the families of
the Northern Neck of Virginia in which
section I have more or less special
ized for many years.

W.W. PAyUg , Esq., of Warrenton , Virginia, says : " The
Payne family is of great antiquity and of Horman-English descent.
The cradle of the family was in Normandy, France; in the 10th
century the Paynes Seigneurs were resident in and around St, Loj
the'Paynes of England deduce their descent from these Norman Lords",
Hayden says: " Sir Robert Payne had two brothers, William
and John, who from England imigrated to America "..etc,
John Woodville Payne of Estill Springs, Tenn,, says: " Three-
brothers of eiaellent English stock emigrated to America from
England in 1619, They were Sir Robert , William, and John Payne,
Sir Robert returned to England, "William settled near Jamestown, page 4,
John settled in what is known as the ' Northern Heck' of Virginia, extending from Northumberland on the bay to the counties of
Fauquier, Fairfax, and Culpeper Counties" •
Payne Family p. 4.
.... There is a colonial record that sir Robert Payne
came to America from England , but no family. His name is
recorded as a trustee in the Church of Essex , Gloucester
County, Va.
" The Payne family is a very ancient one of England "
says Mr John J, Woodville Payne of Estill Springs Tenn.)
" and the name is recorded in the Domesday Book, a register
made by William the Conqueror in loSl, containing a survey
of all the lands in the kingdom, the value, etc. In
In Sailey's old English Dictionary the name is derived from
the French ' Payen, a heathen or pagan. Honorable
mention is made of the family; in the Country Gentry of
England".Genealogy of the Payne Family, by Albert Paine
of Maine, says: " At first the name was Paganus, then
Pagan- Pagen-- Payne-- Paine, all being corruptions of
the original name with the rather uncomplimentary meaning
heathen. Although spelling their names differently all
the Paynes are of the same family. The first ancestor we
have the surname of is Hugh de paen, who went with his
friend Robert on the Crusades to the Holy Land. Hugh's
father was inseparable from William the Conqueror, and the
friendship begun by them was continued by their sons page 5.
Robert and Hugh.. During this expedition Hugh acquired
fame and the title to knighthood by his prowess and skill.
\
Payne Family p.5.
...At the termination of the Crusades, Hugh, with a
friend, instituted an order knoum as ' Templars of the Cross'
the sole object of which was to further the great object
of the Crusaders' mission, by protecting the Holy Places
and rendering safe the journey of all pilgrims to the holy
shrine. The original organization had only'nine members,
but soon assumed colissal proportions"

In the latter part of the eighteenth century it was the custom of the gentry to assemble and nominate a xx a. candidate to the House of Burgesses, It was also understood that if the day was unfavorable the would defer the voting to the first suitable day.
The morning appointed for the meeting was cloudy but not raining. General,(the Colonel ) Washington, Lord Fairfax, and others did not attend, thinking there would be no meeting. Sir Edward Payne, William Payne and others met, and nominated Col, William Elzey.

...The other party being very mucji dissatisfied, met afterward and nominated Lord Fairfax, Party feeling ran very high. The day of the election, General Washington, Ca-ptain Spenser, William Payne Jr., and others were standing together talking; they were all very much excited. About noon it became evident that Lord Fairfax would bo defeated. General Washington was engaged in a warm controversy with William Payne during which he made some reflections on Mr, Payne's integrity. William Payne i immediately seixed a a walking cfine of Captain Spenser held in his hand and laying his left hand on the shoulder of Captain Spenser xskdxmrkks: who was standing between him and General Washington, he sprang up and knocked General Washibgton down. Friends interposedana separated them. The next day General Washington sent Mr, Payne a. note requesting him to meet him at lagle Tavern, Alexandria , Va. at a certain hour, Mr, Payne went with the expectation of fighting a duel. General Washington met Mr. Payne at the door of the t vern -•nd extending his handhe said:"Mr, Payne I was wrong yesterday; I wish to be right today, YOF had some little satisfaction; if you are content with it I would like to bury the past over a bottle of wine wit h you," Some years afterwards General Washington invited Mt.
