The interior plan was fixed as the client asked to design the building based on it, including facade, landscape, interior dec-orations and so on. As the plan made the whole body of this 20-unit-apartment into a simple cube with the least changes to the volume possible, the objective was to give it a very unique design to make the building stand out but with a simplicity expected from a residential building. Using brick as the main material gives it a more Iranian look and a chance to use brick ornaments combined with simplicity of a modern design.The simple texture on the west facade is a combination of
glazed ceramics and glass bricks. By reducing the penetra-tions in the western facade which always lets the annoying sun of the afternoons in this climate, a vast flat area of bricks could be emerged. This has been turned into an opportunity for a unique design of an arising look. Turquoise color along with bricks made a beautiful traditional combination and the glass-bricks let limited amount of sun rays inside, to make an outstanding view during sunsets and also the facade randomly shines from the light inside during the night.Most of the work on this project was supervision on construc-
tion phase with collaboration with contractors specially during building the facade.

Details of brickworks in different parts. The challenge is to keep the amount of ornaments in balance. Not too much to spoil the modern look and not too little so the facade looks boring.
Three very old trees made it almost im-possible to provide a standard entrance for cars to the basement floor. Then this challenge offered an opportunity to design this entrance with unique brickworks.

One of the biggest challenges of the design was the main entrance in the west facade which was a very small one on the original plans and there was so few to do to make it more proper in size. This warm, human-sized, welcoming entrance was the result of that challenge.Bottom left: Southern facade is more simple with less brickworks and ornaments but mostly focused on proportions.
Left: the black steel frames provides some contrast in the flat facade on west, companied by the steel horizontal profiles. Railings on the roof were also designed in harmony with bricks.
With the steep street on the west, the designer came to the solution of breaking the yard wall into pieces and follow the slope, step by step. Small gaps with special railings avoid the wall to look very huge and heavy.

The building was designed by Kourosh Rafiee, and the most challenging part of the engineering was to prepare the drawings for the facade. The result was to divide the facade strips into pieces, made in factory and hanged onto the structure by special fasteners.

Bandpey . NowshahrArchitect, Project Architect, Project Architect. 2014
The project started where the client asked to improve the design of this villa, located on outskirts of Nowshahr, a beach city on north of Iran where the climate is very humid with mostly a moderate temperature. The first design was a relatively big villa with a square shaped plan and a compli-cated structure of many levels and semi-levels and a roof that had many different slopes. The first decision was that redesigning was inevitable and improvements
could not be achieved just by small changes. But the challenge was that concrete structure was built-up, waiting for the light steel roofs and only the smallest changes in structure could be accepted by the client. The main objectives in the improvement process of this design were to
decrease the built area to around half, avoiding changing the structure as much as possible, adjusting the design to the climate, design regarding the fantastic view to the mountains covered with forests south of the site and making the design more simple for the building standards in the area is low and a complicated design can lead to many problems. The final idea was to separate the structure into two main parts for two
reasons: separating the part for sleeping rooms from living rooms and more important was to make natural circulation possible with emptying the center part of the mass. It also provides a wider view to the southern mountains. Many primary alternatives were presented and the design went along the client’s needs and wishes. A master bedroom on the upper floor was added. The drawings were prepared in a way more easily understandable for
the local technicians and the collaboration is very high to reach a higher standard for the building.

As the whole official building was faced toward west, using vertical shader was suggested in the first design proposals. Behind it is a full glass curtain wall providing natural adjusted light inside to reduce energy consuming. The shader provided the opportunity for a special design using colors in the logo of the company to give the building an identical appearance. Below is the final facade design approved by the client after many changes, required by them and a picture from the building in the final steps.
Yas Factory . Kamalshahr, KarajArchitect, Project Architect (at Keroug Engineering Consultants) . 2014
Given an built steel structure in Baharestan Industrial Town, the objective was to design a building for a factory of manufacturing heating packages. The whole pro-duction line was imported from China, so the design process was in collaboration with Chinese experts. The project was consisted of two parts: an official building (including the interior design) and preparing the other part of the infrastructure for the factory and other facilities, required for the technical and human needs.

Alvand Official/Commercial Complex . TehranProject Architect (at Sis Office) . 2014
Designed by Leila Nasseri and Parviz Omidi the objective was to provide all the technical drawings for this 19-storey building which was consisted of 7 levels of parking spaces, and nine levels of offices on two levels of commer-cial area. The whole model was created in Autodesk Revit in collaboration with Leila Nasseri, the designer. Although most of the interior spaces were just ordinary, standard offices
but the most challenging part was engineering the complicated facade of the building.

Mollasadra Apartment . TehranArchitect . 2014
The interior design of this old Apartment in Tehran has three main parts: Designing the kitchen with least of changes to the installations, as the client asked. Designing a private hall for the family ,in relation to the kitchen. And refurbishing the big hall and dining room. The family hall was decorated with brick and wood to make it a warmer place and a special design with carved stone and glazed tiles, inspired from the old archi-tecture of Iran was applied in the decoration of the big hall.

Hessam Dadkhah and his wife (Leila Nassei, who is also an architect) refurbished this apartment for themselves, using their own design. The main challenge was time. Designing and refurbishing the 67m2 apartment in less than one month with a small budget. The main changes were made to the kitchen and the main design was in the small dining room, where the flooring from the kitchen expanded into the dining room, turning it to a flexible space, makes it both belonged and separated from it.

The special attribute of this project was the shape of the site which makes the design of the interior plans challenging for the objective was to achieve rectangular spaces as this makes it more proper for residential use.This contrast between angles then used as the characteristic
of the design for the facade. The facade was designed with a combination of light- colored stone and dark wood. Two of the alternatives can be seen.Here are samples of the technical drawings including all
details from general architectural drawings to design of the wardrobes, ramp to the below level and the design of the yard and so on.

District 22 Apartment . TehranArchitect . 2013
The proposition for this unique design which was supposed to be used for a big family was a duplex-apartment but in the top floor half of the area is occupied to form a small yard (garden roof ). The idea was inspired by the yards in the very old houses in Iran which a small garden-alike yard is surrounded by the rooms, makes it completely covered, since the privacy was very important for the Muslims. The main idea was to make it possible to have a roof-garden like this, with a maximum level of privacy, expected by the client and appropriate for their lifestyle.

The structure of the 5-storey apartment building was built as the client asked for improvement ideas for the interior and design of the façade. The client asked for a unique design for the façade using wood (an almost new and quite luxurious material in the country at the time) but the challenge was to use a limited amount for economical issues. A minimalistic look was the solution using plain surface of the bright stone in contrast with dark wood.

Aqdaa is a small yet an old city located in the middle of the desert in Iran. With the rich history, culture and architecture of the city and the area, basing the design on historical architecture of Iran seemed to be the only idea applicable. But the principle, always used in building ceilings and domes or decorating big arcs, this time used to build and rise the element from the ground. This gave the design a very remarkable shape, without scratching the skyline with rising too much, which is crucial for the characteristic of this city. The head shaped a form, implying pomegranates which is the main agricultural product and also a symbol of Aqdaa.

Meraj-o-Shohada is a place which during the war with Iraq in 80’s was used to gather the bodies of those who killed in the war and then identifying them and deliver them to the families with special rituals as these were “The Martyrs” (Shohada) and they had the highest spiritual respect. Now the activities are much lower than those days and the authorities want to turn it into a memorial-cultural center with adding a neighbor site to it.Located in the middle of the old part of Tehran, the shape of the site was
very challenging. The project was divided into three main parts (and also phases of conctruction). The official building, central open area and the monumental part (combined with the buiding for cultural/educational use).

Mehrshahr is relatively a new city near Tehran, mostly consisted of two or three storey houses or villas and green areas. With the vast and fast development of Tehran during the last decades, this city has also been through many changes and developments, leaving many undeveloped and unplanned areas. This project was to arrange, improve and design for the development of one of this vast areas in the middle of the city. The site is a long area between blocks of the city and the most important character-
istic of it is the shape which is in no order. Researching on the functions and different features of the site and the adjacent blocks, led to defining and suggesting various functions in the site, some works locally and some in the scale of the whole town and then the design process started. The objective was to turn all these different parts into one passage park considering a unity factor in the whole design.
A main street divides the site into two parts. Keeping the relation between these two main parts of the passage was an important challenge.

The entrance of each apartment separates the area for the rooms (the most private) and the hall which is the most public place in a house. The Kitchen is also combined of two zones. Collaborating with contractors, during the construction was the
main challenge to avoid problems and changes in the design, usu-ally expected for the projects in smaller cities since the adequate, qualified or educated contractors are always hard to find in these areas. The final result was believed to improve the standards of buildings in the neighborhood.

Anshan Tourism ComplexThesis Project for Master Degree.2009
The project of designing Anshan Tourism Complex is based on two important principles: sustainability and tourism. Sustainability is about the future of man and the planet, and tourism is one of the most important fields in focus today when speaking of economy and development but its social and cultural importance also can-not be neglected in the 21st century’s “Global Village”. Choosing the subject of sustainability comes from the author’s concerns to experience using this principle practically in design rather than theory. And also studying and practicing the relation of sustainability and landscape architecture.Anshan Tourism Complex provides recreational
accommodation for tourists visiting the site which is situated in Khoozestan province in a very beautiful wilderness. Next to it is the lake of Karoon3 dam. The site has various poten-tials for natural, cultural, historical, social and environmental attractions. All these, along with the unique form of the land and changes (happened or expected) in the ecosystem of the area because of emerging the big lake right after the dam was built, makes serious basis for research and design in this project. An important example is the villages that submerged under water and their former residents who seek new lands and careers now and ecotourism looks like a proper answer for them.The design thesis project aim was to design
the whole area in big scales and then focusing on designing the most important touristic part.

Avai Villa . AbharArchitect (at Sis Office). 2008
The building is designed for recreational family purposes in the suburban areas of the small city of Abhar in north-west of Iran. Simplicity and using domestic architectural elements were the main design guides.Two optional alternatives were proposed, both suggesting the first
level as an open hall for family gatherings and all the rooms are on the second level with another small hall provided.

Wooden Structured Villas . AbharArchitect (at Sis Office) . 2010
The project which once was just a small villa, expanded and turned into a vast divided area with many villas for the whole big family. Considering the availability of woods, the main idea was to design rural-like buildings with adjusted wooden structures (wood is usually a rare material in Iran, so is using it as a building material). The sketching deliver this sense. The walls will be covered with a traditional material which is a mixture of clay and straw as used in old and rural houses.

Designed in two residential level with a small office at the top level, this building was mostly inspired by old building style in the northern region of Iran, specially in Geelan province which is rainy and humid. The great slope of the rigged roof, looking westward is the most remarkable factor of such design. And the main focus was on planning, trying to fulfill all the needs and creating a very flexible and useful space inside the house considering the lifestyle of the client.

With the unavoidable interest of the client and his family in swimming and their emphasis on having an indoor pool in this villa, located on some suburban area around Tehran, the challenge was to design the swimming pool and then covering it with the building itself so the building area and so the cost of it will not rise unexpectedly.

Cartoons Various Exhibitions and Magazines . 1997-current
Cartoons was always a hobby which became more and more professional for Hessam Dadkhah, specially during the recent years. Winning some awards in cartoon contests, holding an exhibition in 2006, and having cartoons as the selected work of many inter-national exhibitions and contests are among the achievements of this career. He has been working with some magazines and newspapers as a cartoonist/illustrator in the recent years.

Using a mixture of being an expert in drawing cartoons and the experience with graphic design, illustra-tions were made mostly for own humorous writings in different publications. A side career along writing for Khatkhati, the most renown magazine of humor, cartoon and caricature at the time. Also illustrating or drawing cartoons for Etemaad Newspaper and some other projects.

The Days Before and After The Lost Thing Was Found . 2005
A story of a young boy who loves a girl that passes a bus station at a certain time every day and he tries to communicate with her. This was Hessam’s first short film, made by zero budget with a
camcorder and three of his friends acting. The story was adopted from a short story written by the first role actor.
Two young roommates find a bag in the street and try to be helpful and find the owner. But then two people call and claim the bag and this leads them into trouble.The first experiment to work with DSLR cameras at making short
movies, also lot of dialogue to handle both in writing and in directing.
A man finds a small piece, probably broken and detached from a bigger thing. He gets obsessed by finding the bigger piece and so makes something which looks that the small piece is a part of it and makes it complete. But then it breaks down and he loses the first small part which started the story!His first professional short film was selected at “The 10th Interna-
tional Short Film Festival of Tehran”, 2005. The greatest festival for short films in Iran.

A young woman is listening to music during cooking lunch. A very short, zero budget, experimental film.
A 50-second video clip which was shown as a teaser during the ceremony for announcing the winners. The group of three young architects who won the second prize asked this video to be a re-make of the design process. Making it look like a real, documentary was a challenge. A short stop-motion animation describing the concept was suggested and included by the director. Due to the short time available, the whole process of filming and editing was done in just two days.
