Message from the ChairmanDear fellow Alumni

The past year has truly been an exciting one for HERZLIA. Our 70thanniversary was celebrated in style. Scores of members from ourlocal community participated in the local events held to mark thisspecial year in the life of HERZLIA.

Our overseas alumni were not to be outdone and it was my pleasureand an honor to attend all of the 70th celebrations and reunionsin eight cities around the world. 1,200 alumni of all ages attendedthe various events which were organized by volunteer committeesin each of these cities. Two words describe the energy which prevailedat the various international gatherings: “spontaneous combustion”.

Fun, laughter, reminiscing and a love of HERZLIA permeated thesereunions. Thanks to the coordinators and their committees, andthanks to the alumni for your attendance.

Lastly, thank you to those alumni (and partners) who have generouslysent donations to the Foundation - your financial support is mostmeaningful. On behalf of the Cape Town HERZLIA family I wish youa healthy and happy 2011. May you be blessed with all things good.

With Warm Regards,MarcoChairman, HERZLIA Alumni Association

HERZLIA 70 Celebrations & Alumni Reunions

Over 300 Alumni attendIsrael 70th AnniversaryReunionThe Israel reunion held at Kibbutz Givat Chayim just outside Netanyawas a most successful event with over 300 people in attendance. It was a special experience to witness so many past pupils greetingeach other and reacquainting themselves with old classmates andfriends, some of whom had not seen each other for over 40 years.

From 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm there was a buzz in the air and a senseof connectivity that was palpable whilst everyone greeted old friends, long lost friends and some new friends. Max Moss, Gadi Levin andtheir team did a superb job. Geoff Cohen spoke very well, theHERZLIA Celebrating 70 DVDs were well received and quite a fewalumni expressed an interest in making a donation. It is evident thatthere was lots of nostalgia and reminiscing, lots of love of HERZLIAand admiration for what the school has done and continues to do.

For Marco Van Embden, “a personal and emotional highlight wasconnecting with the Class of '71 school friends whom I have notseen for 40 years! What a treat - Sharon Jermyn, Avra Jacobson,Martin Wilk, Mervyn Israelson, Leonard Schneider, Hannah Klaas,Herschi Pakter…it was an emotional evening”.

“We can be proud of our school and to know that there is a massiveamount of goodwill out there. I am sure this reunion will beremembered by all who attended as a wonderful evening of reflection, nostalgia and celebration of a beloved school”.

Geoff Cohen, Director of Education and Principal, HERZLIA MiddleSchool comments, “I too met up with classmates whom I haven’tseen since 1976 and met up with cousins and friends as well asmany of my past students”.

“It was wonderful to see past HERZLIA Chairmen, Walter Robinsonand Gordon Futeran, as well as past principals, teachers, and schlichimwho made the effort to be there. A surprise guest was Eliot Osrinand his wife Myra who happened to be in Israel at the time of theevent”.

Marco van Embden addressed the gathering and spoke about theAlumni Association and the impact that HERZLIAN graduates havemade on the world. He also spoke of how our alumni are scatteredaround the world.

It was a real privilege and a pleasure to have been part of such awonderful event.

HERZLIA 70 Celebrations & Alumni Reunions

70th Anniversary ReunionJohannesburgReport by David Bloch - Class of 1992

On Thursday evening 7th October 2010, a small, yet highly dedicatedand enthusiastic group of former alumni celebrated HERZLIA’s 70thin true ‘Jozi’ style. The venue was the über stylish and sophisticated‘Metzuyan on the Square,’ in Jo’burg’s trendy suburb of Rosebank.

On arrival, guests were provided complimentary kosher champagneand Appletizer, which was perfect in creating just the right mood inrecognition of HERZLIA’s incredible achievements and milestones.

During the informal speeches presented by Marco van Emden, complimented by various video excerpts, guests dined on a variedmenu which included some tasty dishes such as sushi platters, EastCoast Sole and bread and butter pudding.

We also held a prize draw for those people who purchased the70th commemorative kippot. The evening was a great success andthoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

As the invitation alluded, it definitely was an evening of good food, great company and a coming together of former alumni to reminisceand share some wonderful memories.

Canada 70th ReunionReport by Dalia Margalit-Faircloth

The Toronto 70th anniversary HERZLIA Alumni Reunion was, in myopinion, a wonderful event. 40 Alumni ranging from 1962 to 2000showed up for a fun-filled and affectionate walk down memory lane. There were tables of memorabilia, including yearbooks with essays, poems, artwork and photos from a range of years that, upon review, reduced us to tears of laughter, incredulity at our skills from yearsgone by, and sheer amazement as we recalled cricket and rugbyteams, netball and tennis teams, debating clubs and dramatic artsreviews. Tables were arranged by matriculation year, and from themoment people sat down there was lively story-telling and reminiscing. We watched the DVD’s of HERZLIA past and present and I thinkwe all felt enormously proud of being a part of what HERZLIA istoday - a vibrant, leading-edge Jewish educational and culturalinstitution of learning.

“The feeling I got was that HERZLIA today - the school, its ethos, credo - has clearly become the best that it can be, the best that itwants to be - in all dimensions. It is a remarkable achievement – andlets me relate to my old school in a very positive way and I wantto thank you, the alumni, for this.”

Special thanks to the committee that pulled this event together -it truly was a community effort....Michelle Benjamin, Claudi Foorer,Jonathan Glaser, Bee Braude, Jeffrey Mendelsohn, Rachelle Karon,Rica Bukmuz, Nadine Bukmuz, Gene Teeger, Helene Meyer, JonathanMaister, Cecil Brauer, Michele Satusky, Caren Larsen, Margo Gordon.

HERZLIA 70 Celebrations & Alumni Reunions

HERZLIA Sydney ReunionReport by Benny Kaplinski 1971

Just a quick note to let you know that Sydney’s reunion was afantastic success with over 200 people attending, the largest reunionattendance for any single city.

There were very touching and emotional talks by Harry Taibel, StanLifshitz, Jeff Cohen and Marco, who in their own ways encapsulatedwhat HERZLIA is all about. For me, listening to Stan’s highly emotionalaccount of teaching survivors (of the Holocaust), because basicallyall of us are survivors, was especially touching as well as Jeff’s veryemotional tribute to the late Ashley Kaimowitz which I think did notleave a single dry eye in the audience.

HERZLIA Celebrates 70in MelbourneThe Melbourne reunion was held at Kimberley Gardens, a kosherrestaurant, on a balmy (and wet) Melbourne evening. It was attendedby 54 Alumni (and about 10 partners) out of the 117 Alumni wholive in Victoria The event was organised by Eli Raskin (1971), assistedby Rochelle (Milun) Umansky (1970).

The room was set up in ‘club’ style, and finger food was served, sopeople could mingle and chat, in typical relaxed Aussie style.

Michael Cohen entertained us with some of his memories as a 25year-old deputy principal in the 1970s. The alumni DVD was warmlyreceived and choruses of names, and ooh’s and aah’s were heardas familiar faces were recognised. We were impressed with thegrowth and development of the school as shown in the HERZLIAToday DVD and by the tireless efforts of people like Marco vanEmden, who attended our function and spoke passionately aboutHERZLIA’s past as well as its future.

Each decade from the 1960s to 1990s was represented, and Alumniincluded a mother and daughter, who had graduated…… yearsapart. People arrived hoping to reconnect with others from theiryear and share memories and reminisce about the ‘good old days’.

The room buzzed with chatter as old acquaintances reconnectedand new ones were established. There was an atmosphere ofwarmth and belonging, and we all left with a strong feeling of nostalgiafor our lives from a different place and a different time.

‘I thought the whole occasion was very nicely done - made me rememberwhy I loved HERZLIA so much - there still is a special feel. Was quitemoved by Marco’s speech. I think you all did a brilliant job in the waythe function was organised.”

HERZLIA Class of 196050th Anniversary ReunionNachsholim Beach Hotel, Israel –October 5-6, 2010Reported by Barbara (Mann) Levron

It finally happened - after over a year of planning, fifteen membersof our matric class of 1960 came from all corners of the world tospend two magical and memorable days together at KibbutzNachsholim's Beach Hotel, to celebrate 50 years since we finishedhigh school at HERZLIA. Throughout the reunion, we kept comingback to the significant influence that HERZLIA had on our lives.

Within seconds of meeting each other, many for the first time in 50years, everyone was hugging, smiling and introducing their partners:Barbara (Mann) and David Levron (Israel), Benny and Ruth Rabin(London, UK), Derek Perlman (Israel), Jean (Dwolatsky) and AlecRoss (Los Angeles, USA), Loretta (Falk) Helman and Shabtay Levy(Toronto & Israel), Marcelle (Green) and Robert Copaken(Washington,DC), Maureen (Reingold) and Yaacov Itai (Israel), Michael'Foxie' Friedman (Cape Town), Norma (Geffen) Porat and Yakov Nir(Israel), Paul Roberts and Robyn Linton (Israel), Rosalind (Abrahams)

and Meir Romem (Israel), Roy and Lynette Levine (Sydney, Australia),Sally (Dickman) Frankental (Cape Town), Sam and Debra Lotkin(Wales) and Sandra (Carr) Stodel (Cape Town).

The first day we spent chatting, catching up on each other's news, swimming and lazing on the beach or on the lawns in front of ourbungalows. After dinner everyone enjoyed listening to a talk by Sallyon the changes which have occurred over the last 50 years in SouthAfrica, in Cape Town's Jewish community, in Jewish education andat HERZLIA school. After each classmate had given a brief summaryof his/her life since finishing school, we all excitedly watched a slide-show of old school photos – from Sub A (where many of us firstmet) until matric, which brought back fond memories of our teachers,of old school friends who are no longer with us, and of our schooldays together.

On the second day, everyone (including partners) proudly woretheir specially designed HERZLIA matric class 1960 T-shirts (on theback '50th Year Reunion, Israel, 5-6 October, 2010') to go on a bustour to the Gilboa mountains and a visit to ancient burial caves atBeit She'arim. On the last evening, while eating a sumptuous buffetBBQ meal, we reminisced about the past, expressed our feelings ofjoy at being together at the present reunion and sadness that it wasover so quickly, and started sowing the seeds towards the nextreunion in three years time.

HERZLIA Class of 1960Cape Town ReunionCoffeetime 29 August, 2010Report by Roydon Sacks

The class of 1960 held its 50th anniversary reunion at CoffeetimeGardens, Cape Town on 29 August, 2010.

Those who attended were: Phillip AVIV, Sally FRANKENTHAL(Dickman), Michael “Foxy” and Sharon FRIEDMAN, Trevor and AvrilGREEN, Mathew HENDLER, Sol and Gita LISON, Judy FARBER(Liff),Leon and Reve MARGOLIS, Tuvia MUSIKANTH, Leslie and MarciaNARUNSKY (from Sydney, Australia), Kaile NOCKY (Sadur),Roydon and Elaine SACKS, Ralph and Selma WAGENHEIM.

Geoff Cohen, Director of Education, UNITED HERZLIA SCHOOLS,addressed the gathering which listened intently with great pridewhen he explained how the school had progressed into one of thefinest and innovative schools in the Western Cape. Some of thegroup had third generation learners attending the school. Otherswere proud parents of student councillors, award winners and headstudents.

We watched a slide show of photographs of our class which rangedfrom 1949-1960. Everyone enjoyed the show and enthusiasticallypointed to themselves and their schoolmates.

It was great fun and enjoyed by all who spent time catching up andrecalling many memories. We were truly “pioneers” of the school, being the fifth class to matriculate and the first to be big enough tobe divided into two classes. The reunion was a session where eachOld Herzlian had the opportunity to relate briefly about their livesand recall fond memories of their school days.

Many of our class mates are scattered throughout the world withmany living in Israel. They will attend a reunion in October. Someof the members of the class of 1960 from Cape Town will beattending.

Our thanks to Geoff Cohen for his informative talk, to Coffeetimeand to everyone who attended and who contributed to the successof the occasion.

Class of 1964 ReunionReport submitted by Doron Blau

The 1964’s matric reunion was held on Saturday 7 August at MaxHarris’s beautiful home in Newlands.

The evening was a great success and we all had much fun as werecalled the crazy things we used to do. It was an ideal opportunity

to catch up on what everyone has been doing to date. We all agreedthat this event should be repeated regularly and look forward toour 50th reunion in four years’ time.

Class of 1990 Israel Reunion- a good time had by allWhile everyone knows that one of HERZLIA School’s ideals is topromote aliyah, no year group has fulfilled this ideal as much as theClass of 1990.

On the evening of June 3rd, 16 ex-Herzlians from the Class of 1990gathered at the home of Renee Kingsley (nee Shalom) in Modiin,Israel, for our 20th reunion. In true South African style, a braai wasthe choice of entertainment, along with some good old Jonny Cleggmusic in the background.

The group was a mixture of those who had made aliyah straightafter school through youth movement programs, some who hadfirst studied in South Africa but made aliyah as part of their ideologyand others who had moved to Israel after following their hearts. It was a great opportunity to catch up with friends whom we hadnot seen in ages, and others who we see more often, but usuallywith many kids around.

Gadi Levin, the head boy of the Class of 1990, gave a little talk, explaining that in gross numbers our year was the largest ever matricclass in the history of Herzlia, and in turn, we were the largest evergroup to make aliyah. (Besides for the 16 that came to the reunion, there are at least another four 1990 matriculants living in Israel).

Magic MemoriesIsaac Lipshitz of Israel has kindlysubmitted this memorable phototaken at the 1959 Matric dance.

Alumni Reunions

Clint Rubin then lead a small ice-breaker asking people to revisitsome of their most embarrassing, enjoyable, and memorable occasionsof their HERZLIA experience. A good laugh was had by all as wetook a trip down our communal memory lane. An old schooluniform was dragged out and even fitted one of our ex-classmates!

At the end of the evening it was decided that we should havereunions more often and not wait until the next decade. Hopefullyby the time we organize our next reunion, there will be more 1990matriculants who will have made aliyah and will be able to join us.
