Imagine a career spanning the last half of the 20th Century that included working with such luminaries of the stage and screen as Orson Welles, Bob Fosse, Faye Dunaway,

Frank Sinatra, Dustin Hoffman, Jose Ferrer and Peter Hall of London’s National Theatre, as well as experiencing smashing successes and best-be-forgotten flops. And this career included acting, stage managing, play- and screenwriting and script doctoring...

Julian Barry, now living in Redding, had that career and shares some of his experiences in his autobiography, My Night With Orson. Released in July, My Night With Orson is a fun and informative behind-the-scenes series of vignettes about show business written in a con-versational tone. While there are links, each chapter, titled around an event or incident — My Christmas With Jason [Robards], My Disaster with Sir Peter [Hall] — can stand alone. Readers learn some of the nitty-gritty that goes into a play pro-duction and why some movies get made and some don’t. ... and how seemingly innocuous events can lead to career-chang-ing decisions, a new love or the end of a personal or professional relationship.

Mr. Barry’s best-known work is Lenny, the story and words of controversial come-dian Lenny Bruce, who was portrayed on Broadway by Cliff Gorman and in the multi-Academy Award-nominated film by Dustin Hoffman. Mr. Julian was nominated for Best Screenplay Adapted From Another Medium; he lost to Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo, who won for The Godfather: Part II.

The story behind the title of Mr. Barry’s book’s title relates to his time as an extra in the 1956 New York City Center produc-tion of King Lear direct-ed by and starring Orson Welles.

For the last decade, Mr. Barry has been living quietly on a dead-end road in Redding — except for Wednesday nights, when a half-dozen or so area residents make their way to his home for a regu-lar jam session. He describes his bandmates as “people who love jazz, and were wise enough to know it’s not a great way to make a living.”

Group members occasion-ally play at parties and have performed a couple of times at the Mark Twain Library, but primarily they play for the pleasure of it. Members comprise a couple of retired airline pilots, some lawyers and two women, Redding artist Kathy Anderson, “who wants to be a jazz pianist when she grows up,” and saxophone player Ruth Ehlers, “and a damned good one, too!” Mr. Barry noted.

His life in Redding has been that of a musician, he says, adding that his bandmates were shocked to learn of his work history, adding, “My career is not who I am.” Music has been a central part of his life since high school, becom-ing a passion throughout his adulthood.

He acknowledges, “I am a fool for playing a trumpet at my age [80], but I love it. I practice every day. I played it a lot in the 50s, until I gave myself a hernia trying to play like Maynard Ferguson; my doctor told me to play some-thing I didn’t have to blow as

hard, so I played the sax for years. But I missed the trum-pet — it’s noisy and aggres-sive.”

Asked, like you? He laughed and said, “Yeah!”

The idea of writing an auto-biography had been kicking around for some time. “I want-ed to set it down for myself; I’ve been though a lot and met some great people and been to some great places, and I wanted share that with my children, to give them a bet-ter understanding of my life. But I didn’t want to write a traditional autobiography, which often reads like a list of accomplishments, so I fol-lowed the advice of the great filmmaker Federico Fellino: ‘Tell the story as you would tell a friend.’”

The book was written over three or four years, he said. “I’d write a part of it, work it over, then another, put it away for a while...” But, “I almost died last year — I realized that despite taking care of myself and as much as I’d like to be,

I am not immortal — which spurred me to finish it.”

He said to write the book is somewhat like being a painter — to look at his life from a distance and see how it all fits together. Overall, he considers himself “one of luckiest peo-ple who ever lived.” Which is not to say his life was without trauma and tears, and he is very candid about that, includ-ing his own contributions to some of those situations.

“I just wanted to give it to my kids and anyone else who want might be interest-ed; I needed to get it out of my system.” And how did his children — he has four, three in their 40s from his second marriage who all live in New England, and a daughter in California from his marriage to the late producer Laura Ziskin — react to the book?

“They loved it,” he said, adding “The only people who didn’t like it were those who were left out. I’d get calls, ‘How come you didn’t tell the story about the time we...’”

Reflecting on his career, he said, “I’ve always written for myself more or less; when I get a story I want to write, I write... I love writing — the horror began the moment it left my house, the push and pull when you’re working on a project... That’s why the book is self published; I didn’t want to deal with an agent or have anyone telling me they wanted me to rewrite it in a certain way.”

And in his opinion, “The best thing I ever wrote was seen by the fewest people: It was an episode for PBS’s American Playhouse titled A Marriage: Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, star-ing Jane Alexander and Christopher Plummer.”

Summing up, he said, “Life is good and I’m glad to be alive.”

After a “New Minor Forcing” auction (two Clubs) South was hoping to find three spades or four hearts in his partner’s hand. This wasn’t to be and a shaky four spades became the contract.

After seeing all 52 cards the way to bring in 10 tricks is not all that obvious. But declarer found the solution after viewing only half of the hands!

After trumping the open-ing lead, the dummy was entered four times using the ace/king of clubs and the ace/king of hearts. This allowed four more diamonds to be ruffed. South was now out of trumps but he had nine tricks in the bank (two ace/kings and the trumping of five diamonds. The need-ed 10th trick was guaran-teed with the two remaining spades left in the dummy.

Most dummy reversal hands require three trumps to be in the dummy. It is a rare case when this technique can be executed with only a doubleton on the board.

BMW’s redesign of its popular X3 compact sport-utility vehicle for the 2011 model year was, from our perspective, an unqualified success. We initially didn’t care for our first X3 test car, the debut 2004 model, though it did grow on us as the days passed. The new model elicited an entirely dif-ferent reaction: We liked it

immediately.Not long after turning in

the X3, we drove a similarly sized and priced SUV from a premium Japanese manufac-turer. The BMW essentially spoiled the experience for us. The X3’s competitor simply didn’t measure up.

What’s so special about the X3? It rides more smoothly than its predecessor, yet han-dles as a BMW should. It’s roomy and comfortable, even

in the back seat — a rare trait in this class. And BMW has upgraded the interior materi-als and switchgear.

The X3 comes in two fla-vors: the xDrive28i, starting at $36,750, and the xDrive35i, $41,050. All-wheel drive is standard on both. Our test car, a 2011 xDrive35i with several costly options, came in above $50,000.

The heart of the xDrive35i is a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepow-er and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. BMWs we’ve driven in the past tended to emphasize smooth power delivery and exquisite balance over raw muscle, but our X3 was grati-fying on both counts. It deliv-ered highway fuel economy in the mid-20s, but required premium gasoline.

For the driver, the X3 offers two major challenges — the shifter and BMW’s iDrive system.

The former is essentially an up-and-down lever with two buttons on it, one to put the eight-speed transmis-sion in park, the other to release the shifter to engage reverse or drive. The iDrive consists of a notched, multi-function wheel on the center console. It operates a number of cabin systems, including audio, climate and naviga-tion. When the iDrive first appeared in high-end BMW models a decade ago, many drivers and critics com-plained bitterly that it was too complicated, but over the years BMW aficionados have reached a comfort level with the system.

Crash-test data aren’t available yet, but past X3s have earned Top Safety Pick ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The X3 typically has main-tained average to above-average reliability scores in Consumer Reports magazine owner surveys.

Some critics have noted turbo lag, especially at low speeds. We didn’t notice this trait, but for those who are sensitive to such things, the 240-horsepower xDrive28i comes equipped with a nor-mally aspirated version of the same engine.

Compared with the Japanese SUV we drove shortly after turning in the X3, the BMW handled more crisply, rode more smoothly and seemed more refined. It also was roomier, espe-cially in the back seat, per-haps because the Japanese SUV was more aggressively styled. That’s not to say the X3’s lines lack character, but it’s apparent the function-over-form contingent won the arguments they needed to win for the X3 to be a truly enjoyable car to own and drive.
