MESSAGE FROM MRS. WHITTEN
Our students did an awesome job celebrating Kindness all week with The Kindness Challenge! Thank you to all our parents who encouraged your child to complete the Kindness Challenge and donate a few coins to our Kind Coins Drive. I can’t wait to announce how much money we raised to support the health clinic being built in Paynesville, Liberia. What a powerful opportunity for our kids! Each month, we have a Responsive Classroom focus on an Academic or Social Emotional Competency. This month’s focus is Empathy, which is a great connection to both the Kindness Challenge and Heron United Week, which is coming up next week! This is our 4th Annual Heron United Week, which is all about celebrating our diversity and coming together as a community, united in our commitment to respect and value one another. We have a team of teachers who have developed a series of lunchtime activities and classroom lessons around a theme for each day:
● Monday: Make A New Friend Monday ● Tuesday: Take Pride Tuesday ● Wednesday: Wind Down Wednesday (mental health/ yoga at lunch) ● Thursday: Ability Awareness ● Friday: Heron United Walk at 1:30
Thank you to Hillary Johnson, Megan Serpa, Katrina Kleinhammer, and Kaliicye Holloway for all their work in organizing the lunchtime and classroom activities. We are also grateful to all of the parents who have signed up to help during lunch throughout the week. (It may be raining next week, so if needed, we will be moving activities to the indoor stage during lunch). Families are welcome to join us for the Heron United Walk; just be sure to sign in at the office and go to your child’s classroom before the walk begins at 1:30. ➔ GATE Testing will take place at Heron on February 26th and 27th. The purpose of GATE testing is to identify students who demonstrate the potential for gifted learning and can benefit from differentiated instruction. NUSD provides GATE identification testing for all 1st-grade students in February. The test is administered by their first-grade teacher in their own classrooms on Chromebooks. It takes about 30 minutes. Teachers, in collaboration with parents, may recommend that a student in 2nd-5th grade participate. If you prefer that your 1st-grade student not be tested for GATE or you would like to have your 2nd-5th grade student tested, please talk to your student’s teacher or send Mrs. Whitten an email at [email protected].
➔ The Heron Gala is Coming Up on March 1st! A highlight of this community involvement is always the Annual Heron Gala, and tickets for this year’s event are now on sale! The Gala will be held on March 1st at the Four Points Sheraton in Natomas. We have a fun, nautical theme this year with our “All Hands On Deck” event. The evening will include a catered dinner and dessert, a no host bar, silent and live auctions, dancing, and much more! Tickets are on sale now for $40 each through Feb. 15th, and will increase in price to $50 each after Feb. 15th. VIP tables are available for purchase if you would like to reserve seating for you and your friends. Tickets can be purchased online or in the front office.

➔ CSUS Academic Talent Search Qualifying Exam: February 12th at 8:30: The Academic Talent Search at Sac State provides 4th-9th grade students the opportunity to participate in over 100 fun, interactive, unique courses while experiencing a collegiate environment. This is a great opportunity for students to explore new interests and delve deeper into traditional subjects. We have many Heron students who have participated in this summer program and have spoken very highly of their experience. In order to qualify for the program, students must take an ATS Qualifying Exam, which we are offering at Heron on Tuesday, February 12th at 8:30 am in the MPR. Registration forms for the test are available from your child’s teacher and attached to this week’s Friday Flyer. There is also a $15 fee for the test, but financial assistance is available from CSUS. Please contact Ms. Borge, Heron school counselor at 916-567-5680 x24014 for information.

Do you want to know about the fun programs and events coming up for the rest of the year? Please join us for the open session of our PTSA meeting next THURSDAY, Feb 7th, at 7pm. You can get more information, ask questions, and see our awesome Heron Middle School Leadership students in action as they give us a student body update!
Please also save the date for our annual PTSA election meeting in March! EVERY PTSA member has a vote, so come learn more about our candidates for next year’s PTSA Executive Board at the meeting on March 14th, 2019 at 6:30pm!
➔ We are recycling markers through the Crayola… Any brand and any kind of used and abused markers can now be turned in for recycling. Crayola will collect them and use them for recycled items and keep them out of our landfills. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
➔ CAASPP Practice Tests At Home: At this point in the year, we are really focusing on preparing our students to succeed on the CAASPP, our annual statewide assessment that will begin in April for all 3rd-8th grade. As our students have been working throughout the year to meet grade level standards, we also want to make sure students are confident with the format of the assessment and the types of questions they will be asked in order to demonstrate their learning. To support students with this, I’d like to share a variety of CAASPP resources available to parents and students at home. There is a quick video tutorial available to show parents how to help students access CAASPP Practice Tests at home, as well as links to “Quick Guides” on how to access the Practice Tests and Training Tests. These are very helpful resources that teachers will be reviewing with students, and I encourage students to practice them at home to help build their confidence and comfort level with this assessment. Our students have been working so hard in their classrooms, and we want to see our Flyers SOAR on their end-of-year assessment! Our students made tremendous growth last year- let’s keep it going!

➔ Heron PTSA Board Elections Coming Up! We Are Looking for New Volunteers! Our PTSA Board Elections are kicking off for next year, and we are looking for some new candidates who would be interested in joining our team and help lead all of the events and programs the Heron PTSA makes possible for our students. Please consider becoming part of our amazing and empowering PTSA board for the 2019-2020 school year. We work hard to make our school great and we have so much fun together in the process!!

➔ Heron earns the highest “Blue” rating in both ELA and Math! The newly updated California School Dashboard is now available for parents to access at www.caschooldashboard.org, and we are so proud of our results at Heron. We have been given the highest “blue” school-wide rating in both ELA and Math, and all of our student groups made growth between 2017 and 2018. The CA School Dashboard is our state-wide school accountability system, and the site makes it very easy for parents to look up information on any school or district in California. As a staff, we will be looking closely at our student achievement, student progress, chronic truancy
data, and student suspension rates, both school-wide and for each of the student groups that we serve.
➔ Heron Student Handbook 18-19 Heron Student and Family Handbook. Don’t forget about this helpful parent resource available on our website. The Heron Handbook has information about our schedules, standards-based grading, Responsive Classroom, school programs, and school policies such as our homework policy, communication protocols, discipline policy, and more.
