TODAY contributor

At 90, Thelma Johnson works out at a health club three times a week. She and her 87-year-old husband walk at least a mile on the other days. The couple recently went on a cruise to Alaska and they like to organize outings with friends.

The Johnsons may seem remarkable, but they’re not much of an anomaly in Loma Linda, California.

There is something big happening in this small town 60 miles east of Los Angeles. Many residents here live well into their 80s or 90s and beyond. The community is so famous as a place for healthy aging that it was named as one of the world's five “Blue Zones” —spots where people live extraordinarily long lives — by author Dan Buettner and National Geographic.

“You have to keep a good diet, you have to keep up your exercise, you have to have a good outlook on life and have a strong faith. You have to have it all,” Johnson told TODAY about the ingredients she believes have contributed to her longevity.

“You have to keep a good diet, you have to keep up your exercise, you have to have a good outlook on life and have a strong faith. You have to have it all,” Johnson told TODAY about the ingredients she believes have contributed to her longevity.

The grandmother hasn’t eaten meat in more than 60 years, doesn’t drink or smoke, and avoids too many sweets. She’s close to friends and family and tries to be an optimist.

“I heard this statement the other day: Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do,” Johnson said. “I think older people have a feeling -- myself even some days -- ‘Oh dear, it isn’t even worth it.’ But you just have to keep doing what you can do and not worry about what you can’t do.”

Like many residents of Loma Linda, also known as "Beautiful Hill," Johnson is a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, which advocates a lifestyle that researchers say may play a big role in a long life expectancy.

The church recommends a vegetarian diet that focuses on fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. It asks members to avoid alcohol, tobacco and any mind-altering drugs. And it promotes “pure water, fresh air and sunlight” as part of a good living formula.

Adventists make up about a third of the town’s population – one of the highest concentrations in the country -- and they live several years longer, on average, than the general U.S. population, said Daniel Fontoura, chief wellness officer for Loma Linda University Health.

The city is so focused on good nutrition and proud of being “devoid of most of the fast food joints” that there was backlash when a McDonald’s opened there a couple of years ago, he noted. Then, there’s the Loma Linda Market, which doesn’t sell any red meat, poultry or seafood.

“If it breathes, it’s not there,” Fontoura said. Neither is anything containing caffeine, which Adventists also try to avoid.

Loma Linda University has been studying Adventists’ health and lifestyle since the 1950s and the research has revealed several lessons for healthy aging:

Be mindful of what you eat

Emphasizing plant-based foods seems to be key. “A lot of times you find these octogenarians and nonagenarians are vegetarian,” Fontoura said. Many Adventists still eat dairy and eggs, but some avoid all animal products.

The Adventists are following their religious guidance, but there is scientific evidence linking consumption of red and processed meats to heart disease and cancer risk. And their diets of nuts, vegetables and fruits are consistent with a Mediterranean diet, which has been associated with longer, healthier living.

One of Loma Linda’s most famous vegans is Dr. Ellsworth E. Wareham, a heart surgeon who recently turned 100 and worked until he was 95.

REPS CORNER

We have had a busy month and have welcomed 5 new families to Heron’s Pointe! **As a new neighborhood we are beginning to build our Heron’s Pointe Account to help offset costs when

we get together for food, drinks, merriment or if a special project were to come up. To do so we have

established $20 per ‘Rooftop’ dues annually. These funds will be used to reimburse for party supplies and provide snacks or catering for a Neighborhood Meeting or other neighborhood event. Most of the ‘established’ neighborhoods enjoy the benefits of their coffer regularly. As our neighborhood and account grows we may be able to subsidize larger events such as Holiday parties or venue rental fees. If you have not done so Please get your dues payable by check to Heron’s Pointe Neighborhood in our Treasurer Sandy Botelho’s, lower box at 469 Freshwater Ln. If you have already paid this year THANK YOU. **Don’t forget the SCHH 20th Anniversary Celebration coming May 2 thru May 9. There will be a special issue Sunsations coming with full details and event calendar. ** BE ON THE LOOKOUT! We will soon be sporting our Heron’s Pointe name badges. I hope to deliver these tomorrow, Thursday, to your lower boxes. Thank you to Hank Whittier for getting this rolling. I will be happy to pass along Tony’s (the SCHH resident who put these together) contact info for any of our groups or clubs that would like a specialized version. **The Heron’s Pointe Listserve: If there is a topic that you would like to share with the Neighborhood as a whole, please write it as a ‘Listserve’ notice and send. I, Ted and Allan will be alerted that it is ‘holding for review’. IF it is relevant and of interest we will be happy to forward it out to everyone!!! **Allan has offered his assistance if anyone needs a tutorial in how to set up your ‘group specific’ email mailing lists. [email protected]

REPS CORNER “ The Neighborhood Representative Council, the voice of the residents, is always involved in issues and programs designed to help residents”. On January 3rd we came together for our New year Brunch Potluck where we welcomed 7 new families to Heron's Pointe. We are growing quickly and at this time have a total of 37 rooftops! In January I was able to participate in three days of Neighborhood Representative training. It was of great benefit to receive the instruction and to gain the experience of some 'elder' NR mentors. Sandy Botelho, our Treasurer, was able to join me on one of the training days and I appreciate her support. I look forward to sharing the information and training I gained to Heron's Pointe's benefit going forward. We have a new 'hard; copy directory which was delivered on 1/30. I included a list of neighborhood 'Groups & Gangs' with contact info for each group (if available), Please, if you feel drawn to lead a group for which we are lacking please contact Julie Sommers and let her know. We will have an 'informational meeting' on Wednesday, March 4 at 5:00 in the Lakehouse Ballroom. Ross Glatzer, the Chair of the SCHH Neighborhood Representatives Council will be our guest speaker and will provide an in-depth look at 'The Workings of Sun City'. Ross is in his 10th year leading the Nreps. His experience and insight is invaluable. This is a PowerPoint presentation and there will be a question and answer session afterwards. This will not be a potluck event. Please plan to attend and learn something new about SCHH!

Thank you, Dot [email protected]

Incorporate exercise into your life

A key to longevity is about 30 minutes of sustained aerobic activity three to five times a week, Fontoura said. Loma Linda University has a Senior Wellness Program, which has become “a hot spot for the elderly,” he noted.

Many members are in their 80s and several are in their 90s, said Romy Niblack, a program coordinator and teacher. Nursing students sometimes take part in the classes and are surprised how challenging they can be.

“Certain moves are designed for seniors, but they are high intensity and the younger people, they can’t believe it. They go, oh, I’m so tired,” she said.

Take a break

Adventists set aside Saturday as their holy day, a time to separate themselves from “the hurly burly of daily living” and find time for spiritual, physical and mental rest, Fontoura said. That sacred time appears to be good for the body and the soul.

Have a network of relationships and friends to share life with

Social connections and a spiritual foundation can lower stress and have a positive impact on a person's outlook, Fontoura said. Avoiding isolation and depression is key, especially as we age.

At 90, Johnson has an active social life and she has a strong faith in God. She also likes helping people.

“When you’re helpful to others, you’re helping yourself,” Johnson said.

Recipe of the Month – Julie Sommers

The Quickest Black Bean Salad

INGREDIENTS:

• Two 16-ounce cans black beans drained and rinsed WELL!

• 1 very large tomato, chopped

• 1 package frozen corn

• ½ Vidalia onion, chopped

• 1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained and rinsed

• 1 bunch cilantro, chopped

• ½ lime, juice and zest

• 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar or more to taste

We could eat this for every meal in summer, even breakfast. It is the salad I make when I have to take a dish to an

event because it is so quick to make, everyone comes back for seconds, and it is the best advertisement for

delicious no oil eating. It is easy to expand by adding more tomatoes or frozen corn.

From Forks Over Knives — The Plant-Based Way to Health

Instructions:

1. Add beans, tomatoes, corn, onion, and water chestnuts to a bowl (glass looks pretty) and mix. Rinsing the beans

well keeps the salad from looking gray.

2. Add cilantro, lime, and balsamic vinegar and mix again. Serve alone or with cucumber open-faced sandwiches

for a perfect meal.

What’s The Pointe

Heron's Pointe Name Buttons Heron's Pointe name buttons are now available to all residents. The buttons have a magnetic fastener that will

not interfere with your clothing. Ordering is easy. Simply email Dot Prescott, our Neighborhood Representative,

telling her the number badges that you would like and your name as you would like it to appear on the badge.

Then make a check out to the Heron's Pointe Neighborhood, (buttons are $4.00 each), and put the check in a

blank envelope in Dot's lower mailbox.

Dot's email address is: [email protected] Dot's home address is: 303 Freshwater Lane

Irrigation System We recently have had our irrigation system turned on and set. I suggest you check to see if yours is correct.

Mine had the wrong time and the rain sensor was set to bypass instead of active. Summit sent Chuck and he said

he checked all houses on Freshwater to make sure that they all are set correctly.

Suzie wrote: You might want to add a little blurb about the irrigation systems that Summit just turned on for the

season. I don't believe most, if any, of us have a rain sensor. Everything is extremely wet now, but the system is

set for specific days, and will water in spite of the wet conditions. All one needs to do is go out to the box and

turn the lever to off. Leave it that way until your landscape needs water, whenever that is with the rain we have

been getting. I have mushrooms growing in my beds due to the wet conditions. Watering is a waste of water

and costly, as well. Just a suggestion.

Heron’s Heroes clothing is available through Jack Prescott. He is accepting orders at [email protected]

JOKES OF THE MONTH

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 60

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags. Then try 50-lb potato bags and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level). After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

Joan and Hal Olson 241 Maplemere Lane

Joan and I were born and raised in the Upper Midwest, North Dakota and Minnesota, and it all started as high school sweethearts and it is still going after all these years. Following college, Hal's career led to transfers to Cleveland, Minneapolis, back to Cleveland, Hartford, Chicago and Charlotte. We have two children and four grand children. We have a daughter with her husband and granddaughter in Colorado Springs. Our granddaughter is off to college for her first year this fall. Our son lives in Chicago (Naperville) with his wife and two girls and one son. Two are in college and the youngest 14 year old girl is making a name as a softball pitcher. Our last stop in Charlotte gave us the opportunity to live on beautiful Lake Norman for the past 22 years, Now we are ready to trade lake living for the life style at SCHH.
