The proposal includes trees plant- ed next to the white walls of Lemm’s Corner, four kiosks on the Quaters Hotel side (to help soften the big building), selling wine, breads and cheeses. Only specialised, unique stalls. They suggest the rest of the park be filled with trees for shade, bench- es and a water feature where a con- cert or event could be held during the season, attracting visitors to ex- plore the entire Fisherman’s Vil- lage as a whole. Poerink said when he started on the project, he immediately asked his clients for donations to invest in planting of trees etc. He has already received big donations to make Lemm’s Corner a “greener, pleas- ing” space. Everyone present at the well at- tended meeting were in agreement that something must be done to the empty open space, “which is now only attracting vagrants and people eating junk food in their lunch breaks”. Most of the people at the meeting loved the ideas by Lloyd and Poer- ink, and just added a few sugges- tions and comments. “The proposal can work, but with replicas of old Fisherman’s Cotta- ges used as stalls instead of kiosks. Also, new trees planted must not cut off the view of motorists driving past Lemm’s Corner – the most beautiful part of Fisherman’s Vil- lage,” said Bruce van der Spuy, pre- vious owner of Fisherman’s Cot- tage. Elizabeth du Toit, manager of the Old Harbour Museum, said Lemm’s Corner belongs to the friends of the Old Harbour Museum who bought the piece of land years ago in order to preserve the green belt, instead of shops/businesses being built on the erf. Van der Spuy said three fisher- man-styled cottages, with upmar- ket stalls operating from these cotta- ges, would enhance the drive into town, with a archway welcoming visitors to Fisherman’s Village. Other suggestions from the audi- ence were to establish an open air museum with old ox-wagons on dis- play. Beth Hunt, from Hemingway’s Bookshop, was in favour of the idea of lots of trees, as trees and green spaces draw people. After the dis- cussion, it was decided that a work- shop will be held in the near future to further discuss ideas on the table. at a primary school, police mem-bers found gang signs tattooed and/or drawn on the children’s arms, in-dicating they are members of agang.Since then, the police have had

good co-operation from schools inthe area.“Most of the schools have identi-

“Dit is darem nie alles my eie handewerk

Discussing the future ofOnrus estuaryELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

Ameeting to discuss the future andmanagement of the Onrus EstuarywasheldintheDeWethall lastweekwith several residents and roleplayers in attendance.Liezl Bezuidenhout, senior envi-

ronmental manager at OverstrandMunicipality’s Onrus office, hostedthe meeting with Pieter Baden-horst, anenvironmental consultantfromPieter Badenhorst Profession-al Services, who was employed bythe Onrus Lagoon PreservationTrust and Pierre de Villiers fromCapeNature. It was the first Onrus Estuary

Management stakeholder meetingtodiscuss thedraft situationassess-ment report for the estuary.Badenhorst presented and dis-

cussedanoverviewof the currentdocument, which due to the sheer volume of the report, could not be dealt with in full.Several questions were discussed by the

various officials at the meeting, includingwhy there is no current solution for the sew-erage spills into the estuary.Rob Fryer, manager at Whale Coast Con-

servation, raised the question relating to thewater flow from the De Bos Dam. Currentlyit seems that the water flow is not managedat the required levels. “It needs to be man-aged now.”A number of blue gum trees on the banks

of the estuary, higher up in the valley, is alsoan issue and the municipality is currentlyworking on a way to address this.

All these issues are to be added to the cur-rent document. It was, however, decided to leave certain

issues as well as the election of a new forumto a later date as the full report was not pre-sented at the meeting.“There is national protocol that has to be

followed,” said Bezuidenhout during themeeting. “It will take some time for the proc-ess to be completed. This is the start of a newway forward for Onrus.”The draft situation assessment report will

be available on the Overstrand municipali-ty’s web page and a link will be sent to allinterested and affected parties.Formore information call Liezl Bezuiden-

350 000 people were stricken by polio every

year, nearly 1 000 new polio cases every day.According to Mellowship the last reported

case in South Africa was in 1989, so it’s nota hot topic locally, but the battle for a polio-freeworld is still ongoing. Indiahasnowbeendeclared polio free which was seen as amedi-cal breakthrough as it was once consideredto be the hardest place on earth to stop polio. From 125 countries in 1985, this has now

whittled down to only three countries wherepolio is still a factor – Afghanistan, Nigeriaand Pakistan.Mellowship said the aim is to have a polio-

free world by 2018. So far over $1,3billion hasbeen spent on achieving this goal with megainput from Bill and Melinda Gates who viathe Gates Foundation have donated over$300 M over the years, and other partnerssuch as Unicef and the WHO (World HealthOrganisation). The Rotary Club of Hermanus donated

COMPAGNESDRIFT, BOTRIVER: Compagnesdrift was probably the first farm to beestablished at the foothills of the Houw Hoek Mountains in the early part of the eighteenth century as a stopover for early travellers heading east on the Old Cape WagonWay. This is now home to Beaumont Wines, a family run farm acquired by Jayne andRaoul Beaumont in 1972. Jayne spoke to the Hermanus History Society (HHS) about thehistory of the farm and a group of 35 HHS members accompanied her on a fascinatingtour of the old homestead, restored water mill and wine cellar on 21 October.

ONRUS ROAD SIGNS DISAPPEARING:A number of road signs have gone missingin Onrus over the last few weeks. Accordingto Councillor Elzette Nell they have followedthe municipal procedures to have them replaced. “The replacement has to be done bythe municipality, which means that the costcomes out of the ratepayers’ pockets.” Thissign on the corner of Roos and Van Blommenstein is still being procured, but the restof the signs, including the one that was damaged on the corner of Van Blommenstein andMain Road have already been replaced. Although most of the signs seem to disappearat night, she has asked residents to be alertand report any suspicious activity and actsof vandalism to the police or municipal lawenforcement. Lemm’s could be agem againLemm’s corner can once again becomethe green, lively, meet and greet para-dise it used to be.After years of proposals, plans and

failure to uplift this beautiful corner,it seems there is hope.At the Whale Museum Trust AGM

onWednesday, itwasclearthatall whoattended this meeting were excitedabout the upgrading of this piece ofland, that belongs to the Friends of theOld Harbour Museum on paper, andfor all visitors to enjoy. Many great ideas have come for-

ward, and most agreed that it shouldbe a green haven, with a few kiosks/cottages selling specialised or artisangoodies.Lemm’s could indeed become a gem

again. And as one newly establishednetworking group in our town wouldsay: now ‘Just get on with it!’

Bergsig Street a nightmareRegarding your article in this weeks Her-manus Times about the potholes in Berg-sig street. (Slaggate ’n al groter kopseer,23/10/2014):Chris Nieuwoudt is half right about the

construction of the road. More than a dec-ade ago when development started inBergsig Street, the road was a dustbowland the developers got together and com-missioned a local contractor to seal theroad.Nobody envisaged themassive develop-

ment of Curro School, Hermanus Chris-tian Acadamy and the security develop-ments that arenow in full swingat thebot-tom, in front of Curro. The bitumen sealerwas never intended to take the heavy traf-fic that is now occurring. Some years ago I wrote a letter to the

ward councillor with a copy to the mayorasking that a 4-way stop be installed at thecrossing of Bergsig and Main Road.Theanswer I receivedwas that thereare

no funds and that the council is waitingfor the Habonim development when a cir-cle will be built.

I suggested that they look in the scrap-yard of the council where I am sure theywould find some used stop signs to put upand I will donate the road paint. I nevergot an answer. This has now become a nightmare. In

the mornings and afternoons the cars arebacked up for hundreds of metres as thedrivers in the Main Road will not slowdown to let Bergsig traffic in, so it is amat-ter of taking a chance to slip in.It is so bad that those of us that live on

Bergsig Road cannot get out of our gatesin the mornings and also have to sit andwait for a gap. Now and then a courteousdriver will let us in.There have already been some horrific

accidents and there will be more, unlessthe council acts immediately.I am surprised that the chairperson of

the ratepayers has not done somethingabout it. I hope he reads my letter. The person who said that Sandbaai is

BUILDING HIS DREAM HOME: A reader sent in these photos of a Cape Weaver male, saying: “This bird is a very enthusiastic andbusy builder of houses to attract a lot of nice ladies. For the building inside the birds are using soft leaves of protea flowers to makethe nest very comfortable. But it seems the wives never get enough houses, so in the meantime this Cape Weaver gentleman has builtnine nice houses for some attractive ladies in our garden in Chanteclair. But I think he must be very disappointed, because only twoladies are breeding! After all was finished he destroyed the other houses, which obviously the ladies did not approve of.”

Appeal from lawabiding citizens, nature loversDaily throughout the year, hundreds offamilies walk this beautiful scenic routewith their children on tricycles, bicycles, scooters, skate boards and also dogs onleashes. However, it is becoming increasingly

dangerous for pedestrians and house own-ers with speedsters travelling at highspeeds and dog owners “running” theirdogs while careering along in their cars.Positively not an acceptable way to exer-cise a dog in this busy area. Those who do not consider others or

make no arrangements for their dogs to be“walked”, should surely be brought tobook. As law-abiding citizens and nature

lovers we respectfully request:1. Speed control signs of maximum

20 km/hour (admire the view).2. Application of “Dogs on leashes” law.3. Removal of dog pooh by owners.4. The urgent completion of a pedestrian

walkway from surfers’ corner to BeachRoad intersection. Please pause, think and appreciate how

extremely privileged we are to be able toexperience this beautiful beachandpenin-sula.Letusworktogether toensure the imple-

mentation of the above and prevent the de-teriorationof thiswonderfulnaturalasset.

Waterbills soarafter installationofnewmeterbyOverstrandMunicipality

The Overstrand Municipality re-placed the old water meter for ourhouse with a new one in June 2014.Mywife and I use very littlemunici-palwaterbecauseweprefer rainwa-ter.We use, on average less than 2 000

litres a month of municipal water,a bit for the garden and thewashingmachine. After the new meter installation

we received the municipal invoicesfor July andAugust and to our greatsurprise we were now accused ofhaving used close to one hundredthousand litres of water, enough tofill a swimming pool.As Ihavevery littlepiping formu-

nicipal water, 12 m of ½ inch pipeundermydrivewayandasthewaterpressure is considerable, 6-8 bar, that vast quantity of water shouldhave washed my driveway away infront of our windows. But as the driveway is still there

and not even a moist spot can befoundwherewatermight have beenleaking and as coincidences rarelyexist, it was obvious that the newwater meter was the culprit of thisfictitious water consumption.Naturally I had notified the mu-

nicipality of this state of affairs, but

nothing happened until two peopleshowed up that I thought were mu-nicipal technicians.I soon lost that notion when I saw

that they had already wrecked thelid of that new meter and were nowattempting to open the stopcockwith a two foot shifting spanner. Ihad been given a proper key for thatjob by the chap who had installedthat meter. The nextmunicipal news came in

the form of a letter delivered amongthe bushes next tomydriveway andthe bits that I managed to read de-spite the rain damage, threatenedme with court cases if I didn’t payforthwith a few thousand randcaused by a faulty meter.Mywife and I belong to theminor-

ity of people who pay regularly forthe last 15 years.I then sent an email to themunici-

pality, again informing them of thesituation. Soon thereafter we werepaid a visit by two gentlemen. It was then made plain to me that

Ihad toask themunicipality tohavetheirmeter checked at a cost of R750if the meter proves to be not faulty.Whodoestheproving; themunici-

pality, who decides on its conditionand who can’t win; Ol’Nick.

The municipality reserves theright to be prosecutor and judge.I would have to hire a lawyer to

begin my case, but that would be afoolish action because the munici-pality is able to hire the best onesfor many years with my money.

NICK DEKKERDE KELDERS, GANSBAAI

Roderick Williams, DirectorCommunity Services, responds:The complaint submitted by Mr

Nick Dekker (owner of Erf 471, DeKelders, Gansbaai)was investigatedand handled by the Gansbaai Ad-ministration.It was discovered that the water

meter on the property was replacedby the Overstrand Municipality(OM) on 14 April 2014.The owner was well aware of the

reasons for this action. The averageconsumption registered on the prop-erty amounts to 2 kl per month forthe period April 2013 to April 2014.After thenewmeterwas installed, theaverage consumption increased tomore than 36 kl per month (highestconsumption of 64 kl registered be-tween 4August 2014 and 4September2014).Thecomplainantrefused topay for

the registered consumption. In locoinspections (in the presence of thecomplainant) took place and he re-ceivedwritten communication on theprocess to be followed in terms of test-ing of the water meter. It is important to note that the OM

is not allowed to be “the prosecutorand judge” in its own affairs, as al-leged by the complainant.Upon payment of the prescribed

fees forhavingametertested, it issentto an independent service providerfor testing and their results are thencommunicated with the complain-ant.Very few meters were found to be

inaccurate over the past few years.New meters installed are properlycalibratedandcertifiedbefore instal-lation.TheOMisaware of leaks thatwere

repaired on the property under dis-cussionbyprivateplumbersappoint-ed (and paid) by the owner. The owner was informed in writ-

ing on 17October of remedial actionsto be considered by himself and hasfailed to communicate his options totheOM to date. Actions by theDirect-orate: Finance to recover the out-standing payments in respect of ser-vice changes have already started

1 NOVEMBER 2014 - 30 APRIL 2015Notice number: 67/2014

Agreat deal has been written about the vegetation of theWesternCape and the extraordinarily richvariety of plant species that occur here, many of them being found nowhere else. In an effort toreduce the impact of veld fires, Overstrand Fire and Disaster Management in co-operation withOverstrand Environmental Services will embark on a programme to reduce fuel loads (aged/overgrown vegetation)with the aimof improved management of controlled veld fires. Each identified prescribed block burn is dependent on seasonal and weather conditions which areconducive for the burning of firebreaks or blocks. Fire safety is of utmost importance and theprogramme will be adapted in order to maintain safe burning conditions. This means that eachprescribed burn will be carefully assessed by a committee consisting of Overstrand Fire andDisaster, Overstrand Environmental Services, Cape Nature and Overberg Fire ProtectionAssociation. Strict criteria will be followed to ensure a safe and successful burn. Should some ofthese identified block burns not take place, theywill stand over till the following year.

Somemore ideasabout theproposedshoppingmall

To remind the writer of the H/T23/10 article about the mall that he,whenconfronted, categoricallystat-ed at a recent Sandbaai ratepayersmeeting, that he is in favour of themall.

He also admits in his article thatthe CBD is currently not working inwinter. Do the landlords have a lowseason rental agreement in theircontracts as elsewhere in the world?

Look at the shortcomings of theCBD business spread, parking, payparking, high rental and certainstore shortages to name but a few.I shudder to think that buildingswere erected in parking areas andnow parking is going to be erectedon a building. A concept that doesnotworktoitspotentialatTygerval-ley shopping centre or Canalwalkand failed at Noble Park.

People do not like ramps, let alonepay ramps. What elderly personwould want to shop and then dragthis shopping in lifts or stairs totheir cars and then discover thatthey did not pay for their parkingticket. Is thisasolutiontoCBDpark-

ing? Does that ideal also come fromthose who know?

Business owners who think themall could have an effect on themshould consider other options whilethey are still ahead. The majority ofpeople in Hermanus is in favour ofa mall, the only question is whenand what.

Retail Africa should also keep inmindthat it isnotcorrect inkeepingstruggling business who may be af-fected in the dark, and they shouldat least be fair and announce theirintention. It is obvious that their si-lence was brought on because of theappeals from the Hermanus Busi-ness Chamber.

And a mention must be given thatone of the appealing members hasopenly said that he will shop at themall should it happen.

The concept of superettes is toserve a small community with theshortcomings of their needs conve-niently, which they currently man-age well in Sandbaai.

When Woolies opened in Sand-baai, it was also said it will have an

effect on the superettes. Superettesis a business concept that works ir-respective of how many malls or su-permarkets there are in the vicini-ty.

A Game type store would certain-ly attract a lot of people in andaround Hermanus as the majorityof people cannot afford top qualityproducts.Electricalappliancesonlylast from five to ten years. Then, take the number of homes, not for-getting homes elsewhere, and youdothesumstohowmanyappliancescould be sold per year.

Many homes in Hermanus areholiday homes and people do theirshopping before they arrive and amall certainly will also change thatmindset. Should numbers lose theirjob in the CBD through closure, thenumbers will be replaced by theopening of new business that shouldcancel out the figures. An estimateof 600 new jobs could be createdshould the mall happen and that isa good growth boost for Hermanus.

Wardisabilitypension ceased

I was awarded a war disability pen-sion from the British Governmentand, apart from a monthly pension,I am entitled to free medical atten-tion for this disability.

The medical expenses I incur formy injury are paid directly to mymedical providers by the South Af-rican National Treasury, who inturn bill the British government.

I visit a doctor twice a year for sixmonthly prescriptions for painmanagement. These prescriptionswere filled on a monthly basis by alocal pharmacy. In August 2013 pay-ment for these accounts ceased withno notification or reason.

I have forwarded numerouse-mails, registered letters and tele-phone calls to the National Trea-sury but to no avail. In desperationI visited the National Treasury, Pre-toria in April this year. Certain

promises were made to rectify thismatter but another six monthsdown the line – zilch!

I have contacted the British ArmyPensions office in the UK but theyare also unable to get a responsefrom the SA National Treasury!

It is now well over a year since Ihave received medication for mydisability for which I am entitledandwhichgreatlyaffectsmymobili-ty and quality of life.

If any of your readers have had asimilarexperience, Iwouldbegrate-ful for any advice in solving myproblem.

Finally, may I thank both Dr. Wi-um and pharmacist Philip-Ben Kot-ze for their understanding whilst Iattempt to get these outstanding ac-counts paid by the National Trea-sury.

Zingani Tshefu, Pat Bagnall, Ilze Smith,Chief Rudi Fraser and Dawie Esau.

Residents of Hemel & Aarde Estate experi-enced problems with feral cats for somemonths and in desperation approachedLawEnforcement for assistance.Unfortunately no cage was immediately

available and it was learnt that there wasonly one cage available for the whole Over-strand municipal area, resulting in a waitfor the cage. When thecagewas finallyavailable, three

adult feral cats and five kittenshadbeenhu-manely trappedanddelivered to theHerma-nus AnimalWelfare Society (HAWS) wherethey are checked and either sterilised or putup for adoption.Eight of the residents affected by the feral

catsweresograteful for thefriendlyandpro-fessional assistance rendered by Law En-forcement and HAWS, that they donatedfunds and arranged for a new cat cage to bedonated to Law Enforcement to aid the ser-vice provided by Law Enforcement withinthe Overstrand community. The purchase of such special cages are

governed by certain laws andHAWSkindlyoffered to facilitate the purchase of the cage.Municipalities are also governed by laws

regarding theacceptance of “gifts” or donat-ed items. Finally, after all procedures had been fol-

lowed, the residents were finally able tohandoverthecage.Thesurplus fundsdonat-ed by the residents were used to purchasedog and cat food, which was donated toHAWS for their participation and rolewith-in the community.Attheendofthedayitwasawin-winsitua-

tion for all!Feral cats may carry many diseases and

are able to produce 4 to 6 kittens in each lit-ter, every 3 to 4 months! That means thateach female feral cat can produce 12 to 24kittens in one year, causing amajor popula-tion explosion in the community. This story goes to show that solutions can

always be found, and reaching out with ahelping hand can make all the difference.Instead of merely complaining, the resi-dents not only sought assistance, but ren-dered assistance to Law Enforcement andHAWS to reduce the feral cat problem intheir immediate area. – Pat Bagnall

DogsbarkedatBark for LifeA total of 23 dogs and their ownerstook part in the first Cansa Bark ForLife Overstrand which was held onSaturday 25 October at Curro Her-manus.The owners of the dogs registered

for this event thatwasheld tohonourpeopleandanimals lost tocancerandto raise funds for Cansa.

The Cansa Bark for Life is a wayto partner with your canine bestfriend, smile, andmake new friends, canine and human.Highlights of the day included an

informative talk about dog cancers,SAPS K9 show and the best dressedpooch competition.Cansa would like to thank Curro

Lize van der Walt and MichaelSemer with doggy Mack, and RobSemer with his fourlegged friendRoxy.

Volunteers from Pets as Therapy (PAT) and their therapy dogs proudly participated in the Cansa Bark for Life. Dr Louise Botha gave a short talk on theactivities of PAT and the volunteers demonstrated the strong bond that existbetween them and their dogs in a short obedience display. Hospice centresare some of the many facilities that are registered with PAT for visits. Anybody with their pet who is interested in becoming a PAT volunteer, contactLouise on 083 264 2912.

Cancer treatment for your petCancer in domestic and compan-ion animals has become a com-mon occurrence. Treatment isvery similar tohuman treatment.Dogs and cats do not become

baldbecause theyhaveadifferenttype of hair follicle (their hair on-lygrowsacertain lengthand thenstops growing, unlike humanhair).Tumours are removed if possi-

ble, with a wide margin and thensent to thepathologist for identifi-cation and staging to see how faradvanced the cancer is.Mostcancertreatmentsinvolve

dripsonceaweekoronceamonthwith tablets in between.Radiation therapy can also be

used, butwith this treatment ani-mals need anaesthesia each timethey receive treatment so itmakes thismode of treatment dif-ficult.

Diet and supplements:This is one of the most impor-

tant points of cancer therapy andapplies to humans aswell as pets.Cancer cells need sugar to get

their energy requirements

whereasournormal cells cansur-vive on protein and fats to supplytheir energy demands. If you limit the carbohydrate

content of the diet to a smallamount of complex carbohy-drates, you will go a long way tosuppressthegrowthofthecancer-ous cells. You must also limit the solid

saturated fat in the diet and in-crease the oil content, especiallythe essential omega 3 and 6 oils. You also need to have raw anti-

oxidants derived from berries, spinach and broccoli. Vit E & VitC are also vital as is chelated ororganic Zinc, Selenium, Manga-nese andCalcium in the right bal-ance with Phosphates and in aneasily absorbable form. All thiswill alkalise the body.Toxinintakemustbe limitedby

increasing the quality of ingredi-ents. Derive them from organicsources - wherever possible feedthem raw in a freshly juiced formespecially the green vegetables.

NATURE MATTERS:It’s Garden Acraeaseason again. Gardeners are concerned thattheir wild peach treesare being decimatedby caterpillars. Fearnot: they are adaptedto the cycle and willsuffer no longtermharm. The leaves ofthe Wild Peach (Kiggalaria africana) containcyanide as a defenceagainst being eaten byinsect larvae – exceptone. The caterpillar ofthe Garden Acraea butterfly (Acraea horta) has evolved to eat theleaves without harm as it can store the cyanide in its body, safeguarding both caterpillar and adult Acraea from predation by birds – exceptfor Klaas’ Cuckoo, which has evolved to eat the Acraea.

Uitmuntendenaverkoopdiens is sleutelNISSAN HERMANUS Van tegnikus totnasionale diensbestuurder by Nissan-hoofkantoor in Pretoria, tot eienaar vanHermanus Nissan. Dit was in kort diepaadjie wat Barend van Heerden geloophetvoordathysowat ’n jaaren ’nhalfgele-de Hermanus Nissan oorgekoop het, enhom vanjaar permanent in Hermanuskom vestig het.

En met die verantwoordelikheid as nasio-nale diensbestuurder voorheen by hoofkan-toor, isditsekernet logiesdatklanteniksmin-der as die beste diens by Nissan Hermanusgaan kry nie.

Barend sien dit ook as ’n gesinsbesigheidmet syvrou,Karin, watbydie takasboekhou-er werk. Vir Barend is dit baie belangrik datjy as eienaar jou besigheid self moet bestuur.

“Enige besigheid gaan oor diens en passie. In die motorbedryf is alle voertuie deesdaegoed, en gaan dit nie meer oor bloot ’n goeieof slegte voertuig nie. Dis juis hoekom joudiens, en veral jou na-verkoopdiens, so be-

Al wiljy net ’n koppie koffie kom drink, is jy meeras welkom.”

7SPEEDDSGTRANSMISSION: KOMBI THE BEST SELLINGDERIVATIVE

VWbuilds reliable T5KombiQUICKPIC

Volkswagen Commercial Vehi-cles has expanded its popularpeoplemovermodel rangewiththe introduction of the 7-speedDSG transmission into theKombi 103 kW engine deriva-tive.Untilnow, the7-speedDSGtransmission was only availa-ble with the long wheel basedKombi Comfortline and Trans-porter Crew Bus.

Kombi is the best selling deriva-tive in the T5 model range. Over21 380 T5 units have been sold inSouth Africa since its local intro-duction in 2004 and about 8 600 ofthose units were Kombis. With the introduction of the

7-speed DSG transmission, Volks-wagen Commercial Vehicles aimto attract customers that are look-ing for a powerful yet affordableKombi with an automatic trans-mission. Customers have a choiceof Trendline and Comfortlineequipment lines.Kombi is designed to comforta-

bly sit up to seven passengers anda driver. It is an ideal people mov-er that can be used as a family carfor long distance travelling or forhotel shuttle services. It is availa-ble in two different body lengths,short-wheelbase and long-wheel-base.Volkswagen Commercial Vehi-

cles offers the Kombi, registeredfor a maximum of eight people, both with a normal body (short-wheelbase) and a 40 centimetrelonger body (long-wheelbase), aswell as two individual seats at thefront, a 2-seat bench and separateseat in the first row and a 3-seatbench in the second row.

The Kombi meets exacting re-quirements in termsof equipmentand comfort. This can be seenright from the standard “Climat-ic” air conditioning, the two-shellroof headlining and sun rollerblinds on the side windows of thepassenger area. The comfort aspect is also at-

tended to by sophisticated detailssuch as grab handles with soft re-turn. The 3-seat bench with three-point seatbelts for all seats allowsthe interior tobeused inaparticu-

larly flexible way. The height-ad-justable front seats (only for thedriver seat in Trendline) havearmrests, whilst electric win-dows, central lockingwith remotecontrol and the “High” instru-ment clustermake operation eveneasier. In terms of looks, it makesan even more elegant impressionwith its bumpers, exterior mirrorhousings (side mirrors unpaintedin Trendline) and door handlespainted in body colour.The2.0 litre103 kWcommonrail

turbodiesel engine develops a re-spectable torque of 340 Newtonmetres. It reaches its maximumtorque at 2500 rpm. It has a topspeed of 172 km/h.The 0-100 km/h sprint is

achieved in 10.2 seconds. With anaverage fuel of consumption 8 li-tres per 100 kilometres, there willbe few stops at the fuel stations. The 7-speed DSG combines the

comfort levels of a conventionalautomatic gearbox with the effi-ciency of a manual box. The DSG

is as economical as it is conve-nient, and opens up a new dimen-sion in gearshift agility.Gearshifts are performed with-

in a few hundredths of a second, without any interruption in trac-tion.The seventh gear has been de-

signed as an overdrive - whichmeans it has a particularly longratio. On themotorway, this redu-ces engine speed and thereforeconsumption, emissions andnoise. The maximum speed isreached in the sixth gear in eachcase.Kombi can be customised with

a number of functional and conve-nient optional features. These op-tional features include tilt/slidesunroof, detachable tow bar, 17-inch Thunder alloy wheels, parkdistance control (rear and front),comfort packages (cruise control, front fog lights and multifunctionsteeringwheel; light and rain sen-sor, auto dimming rear view mir-ror and electrically foldable mir-rors) and a communications pack-age (leather multifunctionsteeringwheel,RCD310CD/Radiowith Aux-In socket and Bluetoothcellphone preparation).Prices (VAT and emissions tax

Vehiclemythbusters everywomanshouldknowAswecelebratewomenthismonth,LesMcMaster, Chairman of the Motor IndustryWorkshop Association (MIWA), sharessome important myth busters every wom-an should be aware of.

Storage Compartment: It’s a car... not anextension of the wardrobe! The more weight you’re carrying around,

themore fuel you’re using, and therefore, themore it’s going to cost you! Assign one daya week to empty out the contents of your car.Just think, withwhat you save onwasted pet-rol you could end up with enough for a wholenew wardrobe!

Checking your oil and water levels isdefinitely one thing that you should notput off:Basically, if your car runs out of oil, the en-

ginewillhaveno lubrication, seizeupanddie, leaving you with a car that doesn’t work anda hefty mechanic’s bill. Checking your oilonce a month can prevent this. Make sure

your car has been stopped for five minutesor so (the engine turned off), open the bonnet, pulloutthedipstickfromtheenginethenwipeand replace it, before pulling it out again - theoil level should be between theminimumandmaximum marks. If it’s not, then it’s time totop up.

Having your air-con on uses more fuelthan opening the window:Ever heard the common myth that having

your air-con turned on uses more fuel thanopening the window? At most speeds, if thecar window is open, the coefficient drag isenough to make your car work harder thususingmore fuel. In fact, it uses about the sameamount of fuel as having your air-con turnedon.

Seatuprightclosetosteeringwheelposi-tion:Sitting in an upright position close to the

steering wheel is not a wise position as it in-hibits the amount of movement that is re-quired to safely manage the controls. Female

drivers are prone to adopting this position asthey need to see the nose of the vehicle foraccurate measurement of distances. Adopt amore reclined position with your arms at acomfortable “v’” shape i.e. slightly extendedandnot an“L” shapewithyour elbows tuckedup against your sides.

Changing Tyres or getting a flat:Putting the gear lever into “park” won’t

stop the vehicle from moving and falling offthe jack, once lifted. If you have passengerson-board, have them get out, and apply thehandbrake as tight as it will go. Switch theengine off. Open the boot and ensure that thespare wheel is at hand before undoing thewheel,as I’veseenmanyarearendofavehiclein the air with wheels off and the driver una-ble to get to the spare wheel in the boot. Thebiscuit wheel is an emergencywheel and can-notbeusedindefinitely.Havetheflatrepairedimmediately.

Stockings do not make a good replace-ment for a fan belt:

Unless you’re driving a 1969 Ford Escort, stockings do notmake a good replacement fora fan belt. Modern motor vehicles have a ser-pentine beltwhich drives all themoving com-ponents attached to the engine andpantyhosestockings will not be able to drive these com-ponents. Make time to understand how theserpentine belt works.

Clutch riding:Keeping your foot on the clutch while driv-

ing will not help you change gears moresmoothly. The thrust bearing is being over-worked by constant pressure from the fingersof the pressure plate, which will ruin thethrust bearing and cause clutch failure.

Remember to regularly get your vehicleserviced: It’s far more cost effective and lessdangerous to maintain your vehicle ratherthan waiting for a part to break and then re-placing it. “Don’t be afraid to ask questionsabout your vehicle and what is being doneduring a service and always use a reputableworkshop,” advises Mc Master.

Updates toMitsubishi Pajerokeep iconat the topQUICKPIC

With its roots set deeply in theworld of rallying and having setthe bar over several decades asone of the world’s most formida-ble off-roaders, the MitsubishiPajero has received a number ofupdates based on customer feed-back and market trends.

“We knowwe have a winning for-mula with Pajero,” comments Mit-subishi Motors South Africa COO,WynandPretorius.“Pajeroremainstheepitomeofultimateoff-roadabil-itymeetingurbancomfortandprac-ticality, and with its latest updateswe will appeal to more trend-con-scious customers. The great news is that the retail

price of the new 2015 model deriva-tives starts at R569 900, offering un-beatable value when compared tosimilar competitor vehicles retail-ing around the R750 000 mark.”The iconic Pajero, which to this

day still holds a record twelve wins(seven of them consecutive) at theinfamousDakarRally, continues asa pukka 4x4 SUV with no compro-mise on off-road ability, passengercomfort and safety – famous forproven reliability, durability, lon-gevity, performance and being theperfect partner for any adventure.The2015modelyearPajero range,

which continues to include bothshort and long-wheelbase deriva-tives all powered by Mitsubishi’sproven 3.2-litre DI-D turbochargeddiesel engine, now features a num-ber of cosmetic enhancements.A new grille and bumper design

with bulky proportions emphasisePajero’s might off the beaten track,

giving it a modern-day appearancewithout changing its distinctiveiconic and hallmark looks, honedthrough the decades.Incorporated in the front bumper

are switchable LED daytime run-ning lights, while the bumper’s de-sign still allows for class-leading ap-proach and departure angles.New alloy wheels, different for

each derivative, further emphasisethe distinct side profile of the Pa-jero.A newly designed and sturdier

new spare wheel cover on the LWBderivatives now covers the entirespare wheel whilst giving the vehi-cle a more modern look from therear as well.On the inside, the standard rear

view camera now displays its pic-ture on the infotainment system in-terface, and automatic headlightdimming is now available on all de-rivatives.Comprising the SWB GLS, LWB

GLS and the LWB GLS Exceed, thesimplified new 3-model Pajerorange embodies the ‘we race, youwin’ mentality behind the Mitsu-bishi brand and the incomparableDakar legacy, which made thebrand globally famous for its quali-ty, performance and reliability. As such, all Pajero models offer

fully-fledged four-wheel drive sys-tems,which include centre andreardifferential locks (viscous cou-plings),andMitsubishi’suniqueSu-perSelect 4WDsystem.SuperSelect4WD includes an easy-to-use manu-al shift lever which allows the driv-er to choose between four drivemodes. The 2H mode is most suitable for

town driving, where only the rear

wheels are driven, offering en-hanced fuel economy and manoeu-vrability. In 4Hmodeandwithshift-on-the-fly available at speeds up to100 km/h, all four wheels are en-gaged for greater control. The rear diff lock can be engaged

manually by means of a switch, ac-cording to driver needs and envi-ronment demands. The 3.2 litre DI-D common-rail di-

3 300 kg (braked) and ground clear-ance remains a generous 235 mm.Standard features include elec-

tric windows all-round with one-touch anti-trapping functionalityfor all windows, privacy glass, asliding front arm rest with two stor-age levels, reclining rear seats andan extra two in the LWB (7 in total)which are stowed neatly in the bootfloor.Leather upholstery, electric and

Tuesday on ladies day saw 37 players competing in an individual bogey plus.Winning the silver division, really on top of

her game, was Lynne Behagg. Playing off a 4handicap, she scored a +6, which equates toa gross 2 under par. Brilliant golf indeed.Winning the bronze division was a regular

Innes van Der Plas with a terrific +9. I am surethiswasapersonalbest.Ourvictor in thecopperdivision was Jackie MacDonald on +5. The ladies certainly put the course to the sword thisweek.Wednesday was men’s day, this week with

abetterball bogeyplusandanearcapacity fieldof 115 players.Thewinners thisweekwereWillie Theronand

Trevor Schouw on an unbelievable +14. IanPansegrouwand Tinus vanNiekerk followedona point behind. The two best individual scores this week be

longed to Ian Pansegrouw and Willie Theronboth with nett 63s.There were no recorded 2 clubs, which will

be carried over.Saturday was a betterball stableford and I al

so had the pleasure of playing.Itwasagreatday, even though thewind really

got up to a mild zephyr in the afternoon.Well played Gerrie du Plooy, and thanks to

Danie van Der Spuy, and especially John Reynell for the entertainment, the 15th hole was unforgettable. Our kings and queens of the wind were Adre

Smit and Roydon Pybus with a great 49 pointson the East course, also on 49 points on theSouth course were Bill McGeachy and John Atkinson and winning the North course were thetwo Sue’s, Sue Mills and Sue Garlick with 47points.There were 6 two clubs and the ball pool paid

to 46.HOLEINONE: Theday, though, belonged

to Sarel Ackermann who managed a holeinone on the 21st hole. A brilliant feat in itself, but if you take into account he hadaholeinonetwoweeks ago on the same hole using the sameclub, wow, that’s worth shouting about!A note from the club is that owing to demand,

the club will now be opening up the third ninefor electronic bookings on competition days.As ever until next time, keep calmandgogolf

ing.
