Hermantown outlasts the field in Class A title defense;Grand Rapids captures Class AA crown after long waitHermantown found the winner’s circle

for a second consecutive year follow-ing a 4-3 double-overtime victory overMonticello/Annandale/Maple Lake in theClass A final. The Hawks tied a state tourna-ment record with all three of their gamesgoing to overtime.

In Class AA, Grand Rapids won a title forthe first time since 1980 when the tourna-ment was played in a one-class format. TheThunderhawks defeated Moorhead 6-3 in thechampionship game.

Class AHermantown repeated as the Class A

champion, but the Hawks went to greatlengths in doing so. The Hawks were theheavy favorite entering the tournament, butafter three games that required overtime,Hermantown was finally able to exhale andcelebrate. And, they did so twice

Senior defenseman Dylan Samberg endedone of the most dramatic tournaments inrecent memory when he fired a slapshot fromjust inside the blue line that hooked on theinside of the far post, to give the Hawks a 4-3victory in double overtime over Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake.

Samberg’s game-winner with 20 secondsremaining in the second extra session gavethe Hawks (29-1-1) their second consecutivechampionship and third since 2007. From2010-15, Hermantown was the Class A run-ner-up.

The Hawks thought they had clinched thechampionship five minutes earlier when junior center Tyler Watkins scored whatappeared to be his third goal of the game. Butthe celebration amid scattered equipmentended when the goal was disallowed becauseof interference on Moose junior goalie TylerKlatt. Klatt made 52 saves, including 17 inthe two overtime sessions.

Despite being outshot by a wide margin, the Moose not only survived, but held a 3-1lead early in the third period in a game thatwas developing into a Cinderella story.Senior forward Nick Zwack had a goal and anassist for the Moose (23-7-1) and seniordefender Charlie Voller had two assists.

Hermantown was the fifth team to playthree overtime games in the same tourna-ment, but the first to win all three games.

Hermantown advanced to the champion -ship game for the eighth consecutive seasonfollowing a 6-5 overtime victory over St.Cloud Cathedral in the semifinals. TheHawks scored four unanswered goals on aspree that began late in the second periodand carried through to senior center Ryan

Sandelin’s fourth goal of the game just 22seconds before the first overtime session wasset to expire.

In the game, St. Cloud Cathedral andHermantown tied a single-game state tourna-ment record for most shots on goal in a peri-od with 34. In the third period, Hermantownhad 25 and St. Cloud Cathedral had nine. The Hawks and Crusaders also tied a recordfor saves in a period by two teams with 32. Inthe third period, St Cloud Cathedral made 23saves and Hermantown nine.

Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake need-ed similar dramatics to advance to the statechampionship

game for the first time in its program’s his-tory. Senior forward Nick Zwack snapped a 2-all tie with three seconds remaining in reg-ulation time to give the Moose a 3-2 semi -final victory over Northfield.

The goal was Zwack’s third of the tourna-ment and 30th of the season. It also complet-ed the Moose’s rally from what had been atwo-goal deficit early in the second period.

St. Cloud Cathedral captured the third-place trophy following a 2-1 victory overNorthfield. Ninth-grade forward Nate Warnerscored what proved to be the winner with7:52 left in the third period. In the closingminutes, Northfield pulled senior goalieRyan Bielenberg in search of the equalizinggoal, but the Crusaders preserved the victory.

Northfield opened the scoring on a goalby senior forward Nick Kvernmo at 6:20 ofthe first period, but St. Cloud Cathedralresponded three minutes later on a goal fromsenior forward Jake Van Halbeck.

Delano finished with two victories in theconsolation round, including a 6-3 win overEast Grand Forks in the final. Senior forwardJohn Keranen scored two second-periodgoals to spark the Tigers, who were outshot38-24. Senior forward Brian Halonen alsohad two goals, including a tally early in thethird period that gave the Tigers a 4-0 advan-tage. He also contributed two assists. SeniorBen Meyers had a goal and three assists.

East Grand Forks scored three unansweredgoals in the third period to pull to within 4-3 with 3:17 remaining after a goal from jun-ior defenseman Casey Kallock. But the Tigersanswered less than a minute later with a goalfrom Meyers.

Class AAThe last time an all-northern matchup was

played for a Class AA championship was2007, and Grand Rapids was a part of thatgame, too. That season, the Thunderhawkslost to Roseau 5-1.

In its return, Grand Rapids didn’t squan-der the opportunity to end a long state championship drought.

The Thunderhawks used a three-gameupset binge to win a state championship forthe fourth time. The spree was completed fol-lowing a 6-3 victory over Moorhead in thetitle game.

Junior forward Gavin Hain fueled GrandRapids (23-7-1) with three goals in helpingthe Thunderhawks add titles to ones won in1975, ’76 and ’80. Hain’s final goal of thegame gave Grand Rapids a 4-0 advantagewith 5:02 remaining in the second period.

But the Spuds (24-4-3) fired right back, scoring two goals in less than a minute to cutthe margin in half heading into the final 17minutes. Junior forward Carter Randklevscored with 1:15 left in the second periodand junior forward Jack Stetz answered 59seconds later.

But the Thunderhawks added somebreathing room with 9:52 left in regulation

During the game, the teams tied for atournament record of 32 combined saves in aperiod. That equaled the same mark betweenHermantown and St. Cloud Cathedralrecorded earlier in the day. Grand Rapids had24 saves and Eden Prairie, eight.

Moorhead posted a 3-2 victory overLakeville South to earn a berth in the titlegame for the first time since 2009. Spuds

sophomore forward Kyler Kleven scored thewinner with a wrist shot that sailed pastCougars junior goalie Isaiah DiLaura withjust more than four minutes elapsed in thethird period. Lakeville South pulled to within3-2 on a goal from senior defender JoshuaEss, but the Spuds escaped with the win.

State Boys’ Hockey Tournament History

Seventy-third state tournament played in 2017Although the first state hockey tourna-

ment was not conducted until 1945,high school hockey was played in approximately25 schools in the 1930s. Most of the schoolswere in the northern part of the state and in theTwin Cities area. Inter-school games were verylimited in number, and coaching was done inmost schools by male faculty members who hadhockey experience or by individuals in the com-munity who had a special interest and trainingin the sport.

The state hockey tournament was conceivedby the late Gene Aldrich, St. Paul athletic direc-tor who thought it was time for an event of itskind because St. Paul was drawing many fans forits games. With the enthusiastic approval of theMinnesota State High School League Board ofDirectors and backing for expenses from the lateElmer Englebert, Aldrich went ahead with plan-ning the details for the first tournament. Theevent produced sufficient revenue to payexpenses and leave a modest balance.

In 1945 the Minnesota State High SchoolLeague, in cooperation with interested citizensin St. Paul, offered the schools an opportunity toparticipate in the first State High SchoolHockey Tournament. It marked the very firststate-sponsored high school hockey tournamentin the United States. There were 26 highschools registered for the sport at the time andEveleth’s Golden Bears went home with the firstof its five state championships. The first field —including Thief River Falls, White Bear Lake,St. Cloud, Staples, Rochester, St. PaulWashington, and Granite Falls — played beforea total of 8,434 spectators.

The first-round games during the initial tour-nament produced many lopsided scores, but thechampionship affair between Eveleth and ThiefRiver Falls (Eveleth won 4-3) was a fine exhibi-tion of skills and abilities which today areexpected of Minnesota high school hockey

players. The first tournament proved the meritsof this activity for high school competition, andthe next year the Minnesota State High SchoolLeague took full control of the tournamentseries and assumed complete responsibility for itsfinances.

By 1947, attendance had more than doubled. It reached the 30,000 plateau in 1956, topped40,000 in 1961, and leveled off at the three-dayauditorium capacity of 46,000 its last three yearsin the St. Paul Auditorium. For 23 years thetournament was conducted in the Auditoriumbefore leaving in 1969 for the more spacious MetCenter in Bloomington. At the bigger MetCenter, attendance nearly doubled.

In 1976 the Minnesota State High SchoolHockey Tournament returned to the city whereit had been groomed 31 years earlier. The tour-nament site became the St. Paul Civic CenterArena, a sports venue with a 15,706 seatingcapacity for hockey and which was adjacent tothe Auditorium where the tournament wasnursed through its infancy. The event returnedto St. Paul as the biggest high school hockeytournament in the nation. In 1985 an all-timeattendance mark of 103,096 was established atthe St. Paul Civic Center Arena.

From this meager beginning, high schoolhockey has grown in programs throughout thestate by leaps and bounds. There were 146 highschool teams which participated during 1993-94. The rapid development of indoor facilities, improved coaching in schools, and developmentof youth programs have all been contributingfactors.

In 1992 the first two-tier Minnesota StateHigh School Tournament was conducted.Following the recommendations of the state’shigh school hockey coaches association, theMinnesota State High School League Board ofDirectors established a two-year experiment ofconducting the hockey tournament in two tiers.

Instead of dividing the participating schoolsbased on enrollment, as is the case with all otheractivities, the coaches suggested the division bebased on performance and ability. Thus, follow-ing the regular season, coaches in each sectionranked all the teams based on their season per-formance. The top-eight teams were placed inTier I to play off to send a representative to thestate tournament. The remaining teams thenplayed off to determine the Tier II representativeto the tournament.

The expansion of the tournament requiredan additional day of playing time, so the Tier IIteams played their quarterfinal games at the St.Paul Civic Center on Wednesday. The Tier Iteams played their quarterfinals on Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the Tier II tournamentconcluded its schedule at Target Center inMinneapolis. It was the first time hockey hadbeen played at the arena which is home to theNBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves. The Tier Itournament was concluded at the Civic Center.

In 1994, the tournament was reformattedonce again. The League’s Board of Directorschose to classify participating schools by enroll-ment, as it is for every other activity, instead ofby performance. The change was reviewed andextended after a two-year experiment. Morethan 23,000 fans paid to watch the Class Aschools, while nearly 83,000 fans paid to watchthe Class AA schools.

In 1999 and 2000 the championship roundgames for both classes were played at TargetCenter.

In 2001 the tournament returned to St. Pauland the new Xcel Energy Center, which is thehome of the Minnesota Wild NHL hockey team. The new arena has a seating capacity of 18,539.In 2008, a new attendance record was set when129,643 fans attended the four-day tournament.
