    BANAUE RICE TERRACESy The Banaue Rice Terraces (Tagalog: Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng

    Banawe) also called Payew, are 2000-year old terraces that were carvedinto the mountains of Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the

    indigenous people.y The Rice Terraces are commonly referred to by Filipinos as the "Eighth

    Wonder of the World

    y It is commonly thought that the terraces were built with minimalequipment, largely by hand. The terraces are located approximately

    1500 meters (5000 ft) above sea level and cover 10,360 squarekilometers (about 4000 square miles) of mountainside. They are fed byan ancient irrigation system from the rainforests above the terraces. Itis said that if the steps are put end to end it would encircle half theglobe.

    PUERTO PRINCESA

    UNDERGROUND RIVERy The park has a limestone karst mountain landscape with an

    8.2 kilometer navigable underground river. A distinguishingfeature of the river is that it winds through a cave before

    flowing directly into the South China Sea.

    y It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites,and several large chambers. The lower portion of the river issubject to tidal influences. Until the 2007 discovery of an

    underground river in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the PuertoPrincesa Subterranean River was reputed to be the world'slongest underground river.

    the Sulu Sea of the Philippines. It is a marine

    sanctuary protected as Tubbataha Reef NationalMarine Park
