WELCOME

Welcome to our 2014 Heritage Open Days brochure for Norwich and Norfolk. This year marks two special anniversaries as it’s the 10th year that HEART (Norwich’s Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust) has co-ordinated events locally, and the 20th year of this wonderful festival nationally.

This year our brochure features 226 events, all of which are free to explore. You’ll find many of the popular, long-standing events here, but also plenty of new events and venues right across Norfolk, with fresh subjects for our regular talks and walks. In Norwich, we have been able to build on the brilliant work carried out by former staff and previous HODs interns and volunteers.

We would like to thank all the event organisers and volunteers who support us in pulling the information together for the brochure and in running this wide range of free heritage-related events. Thank you to our partners across Norfolk for their event organisation and financial contributions to help produce this brochure: Norwich City Council, South Norfolk Council, Broadland District Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Thetford Town Council and Visit North Norfolk. We would also like to thank all the other sponsors and advertisers in helping make this self-financing brochure possible in these constrained times.

Events are divided into areas, starting with Norwich with the bulk of events, followed by Broadland, Great Yarmouth, Thetford, South Norfolk, North Norfolk and finally events in other areas, which are grouped as ‘further afield’.

There are plenty of drop-in events across the county to just turn up and enjoy, as well as those events which, due to limited capacity, are pre-book only. Please check each area section for details of how to pre-book.

For most Norwich pre-book events, you’ll be able to book via the postal booking form on page 43, or online at www.heritagecity.org/hods.

Don’t forget to keep checking our website between now and September for any last-minute event additions, and remember you can stay in touch on Twitter using #NorwichHODs and #NorfolkHODs, and by following us at @NorwichHEART.

Last of all, a big THANK YOU to all of the HEART volunteers, especially this year’s brilliant HODs Assistant, Carrie-Anne Elsden, the wonderful HODs Ambassadors (look out for them on the streets, wearing pink sashes or t-shirts), and Marilyn, George and the bookings team.

Have a great time in the 2014 HODs anniversary year.

Norwich’s Heritage, Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART) is an independent, private, charitable company with two very simple ambitions: to co-ordinate and champion heritage in one area – Norwich and the broader region – and in doing so, to create a best practice model that can inspire and regenerate other cities and towns across the globe. The last few years have seen HEART grow from a tiny initiative to an organisation acting as an effective heritage catalyst locally, and also as an inspiration to other cities nationally and internationally.

HEART is based in the Guildhall in Norwich, and receives support from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and Norwich City Council, and has received project funding from a variety of sources including the European Union, HM Treasury, EEDA, Greater Norwich Development Partnership, Norfolk County Council, Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) and Norwich Town Close Estate Charity.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN DOING RECENTLY

NORWICH DRAGON FESTIVAL

Dragons returned to the streets of Norwich between 10-23 February 2014. The successful Norwich Dragon Festival 2014: Warming Up Winter saw two weeks packed full of dragon-related activities and events linked to the symbol of the dragon, celebrating its role in the heritage and culture of Norwich. Over 38,000 visitors enjoyed the festival, making over 99,000 visits to events, and generating around £805,000 for the local economy.

SHAPING 24 Winner of European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage /

Europa Nostra Award

HEART’s SHAPING 24 cultural heritage tourism initiative has been announced as winner of the 2014 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards, for its work in education and awareness-raising. THE GUILDHALL LITERARY DAY: ROBERT TOPPES - MEDIEVAL MERCER OF NORWICH Gaol Hill, NR2 1JSRichard Matthew’s talk is on Robert Toppes (c.1405-1467), a wealthy Norwich merchant. He needed an impressive building to store and display his merchandise, that building today is known as Dragon Hall. He was an alderman (senior councillor) for many years, was elected Mayor of Norwich four times and represented Norwich in Parliament as a Burgess (the equivalent of an MP). Toppes was also a member of the Guild of St George, which also has strong associations with the Guildhall.Fri: 15.00

THE GUILDHALL LITERARY DAY: BISHOP HALL - THE DIVINE DELINQUENT Gaol Hill, NR2 1JSA talk by David A Berwick on the tormented life of Joseph Hall, who suffered for his beliefs during the English Civil War when he was the Bishop of Norwich. As a man of high principle and moral fibre, he was humiliatingly ousted from the bishopric of Norwich by the Puritans in Parliament during 1643 because of his stubborn stand to support Charles I, the Church and the House of Lords. He was a leading writer and speaker in his day, publishing at least 30 books, but has been ‘air-brushed’ out of our nation’s history.Fri: 16.00

THE GUILDHALL LITERARY DAY: A HISTORY OF DOUGHTY’S HOSPITAL Gaol Hill, NR2 1JSProfessor Goose, author of ‘A History of Doughty’s Hospital’, looks at one of Norwich’s oldest almshouses, which continues to provide accommodation and support to older people today. He will discuss the process by which the book came to be written, place the history of Doughty’s Hospital in the long-term historical context, and assess the importance of almshouses more widely within the overall system of social welfare as this has evolved through the centuries.Fri: 18.00

THE GUILDHALL LITERARY DAY: THE HISTORY OF THE NORWICH MAGISTRACY Gaol Hill, NR2 1JSA record of the Norwich magistrates going back 650 years, written in the year it was subsumed into a county-wide bench. A rare insight into the administration of the law within the City of Norwich. The book has extensive research into the Guildhall magistrates court and this is a very appropriate location for this talk. There will be an optional visit to see the Guildhall police cells and undercroft following on from the talk.Fri: 19.00

WELCOME TO BROADLAND A fertile region, Broadland drew great wealth from its sheep and woollen industry. This is reflected in the magnificent heritage we have today - over 1200 historic buildings - many of them little changed and in beautiful, quiet settings such as unspoilt villages and small market towns where time seems to move but slowly.

This weekend offers you a rare opportunity to examine our heritage not only from long ago but to visit those buildings that have shaped our more recent past.

Discover hidden gems, unusual stories, fascinating architecture, family tragedy and how medieval and Victorian riches shaped these incredible buildings. Our guides offer mapped routes to take you to between four and six of these beautiful churches in a day. Downloadable from www.visitbroadland.co.uk or email [email protected] to request a full set of six guides.

From museums telling the tales of everything from fishing to agriculture, railways harking back to a golden era and stately homes fit for a king, nowhere is quite like North Norfolk to take you back in time. Highlights include Her Majesty the Queen’s country retreat of Sandringham, the magnificent Palladian mansion of Holkham Hall, Houghton Hall with its unique interior and award-winning five-acre walled garden, and the National Trust’s Blickling Hall and Felbrigg Hall. • HEART pre-booked events can be booked using the form opposite. Some events are booked through other organisations – these events have separate booking instructions detailed next to their entries.

• You can also submit your HEART event requests via www.heritagecity.org/hods. You will then be sent your tickets by email.

• Tickets are always allocated on a first come first served basis, as most pre-book events are very limited capacity, so please do act quickly, and provide your second choice where appropriate. Please note that many events have limited capacity, so tickets are limited to a maximum of 6 per event.

• We will not allocate tickets for two events at the same time and date - if they are for someone else please use a separate form, which you can photocopy or download from our website.

• The meeting place for your event will be on your ticket, along with any other special information.

• If you need any more information about an event, for instance more details of disabled access, you are welcome to email [email protected] or ring 01603 305575 but please note that we cannot allocate or change tickets by phone, as we do not have the resources.

• From Monday 1st of September onwards, any remaining tickets will be available to book in person only from HEART at the Guildhall, Gaol Hill, Norwich, NR2 1JS (10am-4pm).

• If you have spare tickets you cannot use please return them to us, or let us know ([email protected], 01603 305575) - they can be reallocated to someone else who really wants them even up to the day of the event.

• For postal bookings, please make sure you include a stamped addressed envelope, with appropriate postage, to get your tickets back. Not doing this is the single biggest reason why people miss out.

• As always, remember that the majority of our events are ‘just turn up’ affairs, detailed in the various drop-in sections, so please don’t feel that you’ve lost out if there is something you can’t get a ticket for - there will still be masses to do.
