State, and local governments. One of the firm’s largest active projects as a prime consultant is a $35 million multidisciplinary

IDIQ for the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) that encompasses projects both nationally and internationally.

Currently, the firm is executing a task order for MDOT which entails a bridge replacement project for SR 14 over Hashuqua

Creek in Noxubee County. EJES is responsible for the design of the approaches along the mainline and detour. Also, EJES was

issued this task order under their Roadway Design Master Contract in which the firm serves as prime consultant.

The firm is continuing to expand its staff throughout the company. “We’re embracing succession planning and training our

legacy and are in the process of recruiting new architecture and engineering graduates for our Jackson, Dallas and Houston

offices as well as summer internships,” said Gilbert-Baker. Having a positive impact on others and being a good corporate

experience.

Having the right resources is essential for almost any business. Gilbert-Baker along with her colleagues expressed how MDOT

DBE SS/ Systems has given EJES a platform to share their experiences with potential clients, network with other firms and

meet with influential decision makers.

Gilbert-Baker provides her top key factors involved in obtaining and sustaining a successful business which includes hiring

the right people to get the job done right and efficiently along with having client satisfaction as a top goal since most business

The Mississippi State University Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach, CEO, is home to more than 100 active student start-ups at any given time. The CEO also works with clients who are not connected to the university and offers a variety of program geared toward leveraging the many university resources to help grow small businesses.

The outreach program is funded in part by a grant from the federal Economic Development Administration, EDA. Popular programs include:

1. Marketing. The CEO conducts business research for about 25 companies annually. Teams of students working on their MBAs partner with clients on customized projects with deliverables that can include: marketing, social media strategies, supply chain, competitor analysis, barriers to entry and other subjects. The team puts in over 100 hours of intensive research during the course of a semester and delivers to the client a formal presentation with recommendations, a written report and all of the raw data gathered during the research. The fee for the teams is $2,500, well below the market rate for business consultants. Clients include CSpire and Yokohama Tires and the Minority PUL Alliance in Tupelo as well as dozens of mom and pop operations.

2. Prototyping. The CEO can also assist inventors with prototyping their ideas using our public maker space, the Idea Shop, located in downtown Starkville. This state-of-the art facility has 3-D printers as well as traditional woodworking and metal fabricating equipment.

If you would like more information on our services please contact me and we’ll see how the CEO can assist you.

A backover incident occurs when a backing vehicle strikes a worker who is standing, walking, or kneeling behind the vehicle. These incidents can be prevented. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 70 workers died from backover incidents in 2011. These kinds of incidents can occur in different ways. How do backover incidents occur?

➢ Backover accidents can happen for a variety of reasons. Drivers may not be able to see a worker in their blind spot. Workers may not hear backup alarms because of other worksite noises or because the alarms are not functioning. A spotter assisting one truck may not see another truck behind him. Workers riding on vehicles may fall off and get backed over. Drivers may assume that the area is clear and not look in the direction of travel. Sometimes, it is unclear why a worker was in the path of a backing vehicle. A combination of factors can also lead to backover incidents.

What can be done to prevent backover incidents?

➢ Many solutions exist to prevent backover incidents. Drivers can use a spotter to help them back up their vehicles.

Video cameras with in-vehicle display monitors can give drivers a view of what is behind them. Proximity detection

devices, such as radar and sonar, can alert drivers to objects that are behind them. Tag-based systems can inform

drivers when other employees are behind the vehicle and can alert employees when they walk near a vehicle

equipped to communicate with the tag worn by the employee. On some work sites, employers can create internal

traffic control plans, which tell the drivers where to drive and can reduce the need to back up. In some cases,

internal traffic control plans can also be used to separate employees on foot from operating equipment.

➢ Training is another tool to prevent backover incidents. Blind spots behind and around vehicles are not

immediately obvious to employees on foot. By training employees on where those blind spots are and how to

avoid being in them, employers can prevent some backover incidents
