Scope
Heritage 2012, 3rd International Conference on Heritage and Sustainable Development followed the path established by previous editions of this event and aimed at establishing a state of the art event regarding the relationships between forms and kinds of heritage and the framework of sustainable development concepts. The number, variety and quality of papers presented and published allow a final and positive balance. In fact, for this edition of Heritage double-blind peer-review of papers applied and the number of definitive rejections was relatively low, confirming the over-all high quality of submitted material.
Heritage 2012 – 3rd International Conference on Heritage and Sustainable Development was proposed to be a global view on how heritage is being contextualized in relation with the four dimensions of sustainable development (environment, economics, society and culture) that were the core topics of the Conference. These topics brought to discussion the definition of a singular approach on how to deal and go beyond the traditional aspects of heritage preservation and safeguarding. As presently heritage is no longer just a memory or a cultural reference, or even a place or an object, further analysis and other perspectives are in order: heritage is moving towards broader and wider scenarios, where it becomes often the driven forces for commerce, business, leisure and politics. For those reasons the topics of “governance for sustainability” and “education for the future” were also included in the programme as key factors for enlightenment of future global strategies for heritage preservation and safeguarding.
A new chapter was included in this edition of Heritage conferences: one on Preservation of Historical Buildings and another dedicated to Early Stage Researchers. This chapter dealt with the specific tasks of preservation, rehabilitation and maintenance of historical buildings and sites and the number and importance of contributions to this topic made it one of the major areas of the Conference. Key issues were preservation and rehabilitation techniques of structures and materials, adaptive reuse of historical buildings, sustainability goals, and assessment tools, among others.
This edition of Heritage also gave stage to early stage researchers and students willing to share the results of their research projects, namely post-graduation projects and doctoral projects. Heritage received a significant number of such proposals the quality of which was confirmed during double-blind review (by at least two members of the Scientific Committee). This high quality level led to the granting of a significant number of reduced fee packs whose aim was to support and encourage young researchers.

Venue HERITAGE 2012 will be held at Porto, the second city in Portugal located along the hills overlooking the Douro river estuary.
Porto has been continuously inhabited since at least the 4th century, when the Romans referred to it as Portus Calle. It became within the last century one of the major urban areas in the Iberian Peninsula and its historical centre was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1996. Although Porto is one of the oldest European centers, this city is nowadays a busy industrial and commercial centre. The city itself isn't very populous, but the Porto metropolitan area has about 1.500.000 inhabitants in a 50 km radius, with cities such as Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia, Gondomar and Espinho. The centre of Porto tends towards the baroque and it is granitic and monumental. This can be seen mainly in the core of the downtown area: Avenida dos Aliados. The riverside shows the visitants that Porto has always been a mercantile city. Porto's geography is known as hard on the feet, but pleasant to the eye because the city is extremely hilly, with many buildings built into a cliff face that overlooks the river. Porto presents a wide range of interesting museums and monuments to visit such as “Casa da Música” and Clérigos Tower. Along the river there is the “Ribeira” (in English “riverside”) where there are a lot of bars, restaurants and places to relax and look up to the Douro river. On the other side of the river, in the riverside of Gaia, are located the wine cellars of the well known companies of Port Wine.

The Palace of Arts
The conference venue will be at the "Palácio das Artes - Fábrica de Talentos" (Palace of Arts - Talent Factory) that is located on the historical centre of Porto, near the River Douro, at S. Domingos Square, 16-22.
The building is owned by the Youth Foundation, a private non-profit national organization with the aim to support the integration of youngsters in the valor market, settled up in 1989, with the support of 21 public and private organizations. Acting on a national level, the Youth Foundation has its Headquarters in Oporto, with branches in Lisbon Region (Oeiras), in the Algarve (Tavira), and on Madeira Island (Funchal). The Youth Foundation (YF) achieves its purpose by carrying out or supporting initiatives that promote the integration of young people in adult and professional life, and youth-related social and cultural activities. The Youth Foundation, beyond the Headquarters and branches, had also different infrastructures acting on a national level.

“Palácio da Bolsa”
The Porto Commercial Association started building the Palácio da Bolsa, its seat and property in 1842. Throughout three generations, many masters and craftsmen worked towards the building of this 19th century architectural jewel in neoclassical style. Great names in architecture, painting, sculpture and the decorative arts contributed to this unique heritage. Classified as a National Monument, the Palácio da Bolsa, one of the city’s and the region’s main symbols and attractions, welcomes over 200,000 visitors every year. A true visitors hall for the region, it is there that most State official receptions in the north of Portugal are held. The Palácio da Bolsa has hosted members of government and dignitaries from almost all the countries in the world and it was included in the candidacy of Old Porto to the title of World Heritage Site. The Palace is a brisk and active space, open to the community, where the purposes and reasons behind its building are pursued: to be a meeting point, a reception area, a place where views are exchanged, where business is promoted, events take place, opinion is formed or where one simply socialises. A Cultural and Conference Centre, the Palácio da Bolsa is a venue with unique conditions for holding concerts, debates, presentations, general meetings, receptions, conventions, incentives, conferences, commercial shows, auctions, varied exhibitions, fashion shows and other medium-sized events, an area to be used for occasions which put an emphasis on excellence. The Palácio da Bolsa was one of the founders of the Historic Conference Centres of Europe, a network that gathers on a European level, Palaces, Monuments or Historic Buildings that operate as Conference Centres.

“Casa do Infante”
The “Casa do Infante”, or the Customs House Old Street is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Porto. The “Casa do Infante” is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Prince Henry, the patron saint of the Portuguese discoveries. This is a built set that covers a broad area of the riverside area of Porto and was undergoing successive changes in the course of time.

21 June - Thursday
16:30 - Social Programme Meeting point: Palace of Arts Douro sightseeing cruise There is no better place to admire Oporto "Ribeira" than from aboard a traditional boat. The cruise will sail up and down stream allowing to observe in detail the river banks where the first human settlements of the region where established. Romans also crossed the river in this location as well as the path to the North, followed by thousands during the Middle Ages, in pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. When Oporto demolished its medieval walls during the Modern Age and the connection with the river became stronger and stronger. Crossing the river was done on a boat bridged that collapsed during one of the French invasions... Nowadays six bridges cross the river Douro and the cruise will pass under each one. It's an amazing view to observe the ancient iron bridges of Stª Maria e D. Luís, dating from the 19th century...
Visit to Port wine cellars: “Real Companhia Velha” In 2006 Real Companhia Velha celebrated 250 years of existence and uninterrupted activity on behalf of the Porto Wine trade. Behind, there is a fabulous history and a glorious past. For the future there is the continuous commitment for quality and the confidence of a well established company with the vigour and the vision to make further history.

Social Dinner: “Arraial de São João” (Typical festival dinner) Grilled sardines is the traditional dish of S. João. The popular way is the salt the sardines and then gilled them on a coal barbecue. The complete dish also includes red and green peppers (that are grilled too, sliced and flavoured with olive oil) and corn bread and/or boiled potatoes. Like in so many other Portuguese dishes wine (red or white) completes the meal. In Oporto during the night of the 23 June sardines are grilled in every street, every square, and every garden of the city and shared with neighbours, family and friends. Traditional dances and folk songs are also part of the festivities - we will have a folk group performing during dinner time, recreating some of the ambience of Oporto "S. João" festivity.
22 June - Friday
Church of São Francisco 16:00 – Closing Session and visit to the Church and Museum of São Francisco The Church of Saint Francis is one of the most interesting Gothic monuments of Oporto. Its interior, however, is of an outstanding Baroque decoration. The original building dates from the middle 13th century but the church we are visiting dates from the late 14th century and was built under the patronage of King Ferdinand I. It's design followed the mendicant style, one of the main Gothic trends in Portugal. The Baroque interior dates from the early 18th century and the gilt wood work ("talha dourada") is remarkable.
