Greyfriars House and Garden,Worcester

Located in the historic centre of Worcester, isGreyfriars, a 15th century timber-framedmerchant’s house.

The unique house in Friar Street has acaptivating story and tells of the family whosaved the historic street and of the affluentmerchant family who lived there.

Built around 1480, the house was mistakenlygiven the name The Greyfriars in the early 20thcentury when local historians confused itsupper floor with the refectory of a Franciscanfriary that was on an adjacent site. The house was lovingly restored by MatleyMoore and his sister Elsie, who saved it fromdemolition in the 1940s. Refurbishment wascarried out with the ‘make do and mend’ ethosof the time. Both were very interested inmedieval art, which is reflected in thedecoration of the house and its unusual

collections. Miss Moore was a fine artist andneedlewoman, and there are examples of herwork on display. They lived in the house untiltheir deaths in 1982 and 1985.

Visitors can enjoy the peaceful walled garden, which provides a welcome retreat in the citycentre. Throughout the year light refreshmentsare available either in the stunning garden or,during the winter, in the house.

The land that is now Bodenham Arboretum waspurchased forty years ago by the late DavidBinnian and his wife Jennifer. What began as ahobby, planting a few trees each winter, hasdeveloped into an area of outstanding landscapebeauty and interest.

His vision was to create a modern landscapethat encapsulated his love and passion fortrees and the countryside. When Bodenhamreceived conditional English Heritage statusin 1995 they realized it was a majoropportunity for the Arboretum to be enjoyedby the public and it to remain in the family. What the family have achieved, continuedand diversified by their son James and nowhis grandsons, is a thriving working farm andArboretum that gives enormous pleasure tothe many thousands of visitors each year.

Set in 168 acres there are some 3000 species oftrees and shrubs and two chains of pools andlakes. The epicentre lies around the Big Poolwhere many rare and ornamental trees can beseen in flower or fruit at all times of the year, their autumn colours being a special beauty.Through a patchwork quilt of pools, plantations,

dells and glades, habitats provide for flora andfauna, insect life and numerous species ofresident and migrating birds.

Several miles of paths lead through acres ofdaffodils in early spring, and later primroses, bluebells and foxgloves line many of thewoodland walks. The brilliant colours of azaleasand rhododendrons begin in mid- spring and theLaburnum Tunnel is one of the highlights inMay/June.

The farm is enjoyed by all ages. Lambs andcalves abound in spring, along with chicks fromthe rare breeds of poultry. Every Christmas timethe old farm buildings are transformed to tell

the biblical story of the nativity, with life sizewooden characters and Bodenham’s animals, including our own donkeys.

The Visitor Centre is an award winningenvironmentally sensitive building carved out ofthe hillside. We serve a variety of home cookedfood and cakes, including our very popularcarvery. The pork, Herefordshire beef and lambis from the farm and the vegetables are fresh andlocal when possible.

Sunday and Christmas lunches are catered for aswell as public and private daytime/eveningfunctions, weddings and funeral parties.

Taking place in a small, intimate town in theWelsh Marches, the Presteigne Festival hasbecome a mecca for those seeking artisticnourishment and musical discovery. With aforward-looking commissioning policy, theorganisation works closely with composers andartists to create and curate an inspiringprogramme of events for an ever-wideningFestival community.

Having greatly extended its artistic reach overthe last four years, to be seen clearly in thedevelopment of both the performanceprogramme and outreach activity, the PresteigneFestival continues to forge ahead with a widerange of exciting new ventures. l

The 2014 Festival programme has a particularlystrong Polish flavour; we not only celebrate thecentenary of Anglo-Polish composer AndrzejPanufnik, but also include important music byPenderecki, Lutoslawski, Górecki and Bacewicz, and feature new and recent works by two of theyounger generation of Polish composers –Pawel Lukaszewski and Maciej Zielinski.

Other exciting ingredients include StephenMcNeff as composer-in-residence, a seventy-fifth birthday tribute for composer JohnMcCabe and the inclusion of music from Welshcomposers in celebration of the Dylan Thomascentenary.

Chamber opera returns to Presteigne – a double-bill from Nova Music Opera, who wowedFestival audiences with their performances ofBritten’s Curlew River last year. CeciliaMcDowall’s exciting new work Airborne (aPresteigne Festival co-commission), about thelife and loves of a First World War Royal FlyingCorps pilot is carefully balanced with StephenMcNeff ’s Prometheus Drowned – a darker pieceexploring the strange circumstances surroundingthe death of Percy Bysshe Shelley at Livorno in1822.

2014 sees a very strong crop of commissions, with special prominence given to vocal andchoral pieces – a Requiem for soloists, chorusand orchestra from Pawel Lukaszewski, anunaccompanied choral work, The Mariner’sCompass, from Lynne Plowman and a song cycle,Lie Still, by talented young composer TobyYoung to words of Dylan Thomas. A stringquartet, And the Snow did Lie from Hilary Tann, awork for clarinet and piano from Daniel Kidane

16th Century Painted room

No. 1 Church Lane is one of the mostinteresting yet mysterious buildings in Ledbury. The spot where it stands, at the junction of the'kings highway' and the East/West track, fromHereford Cathedral to Ledbury Parish Church, has undoubtedly been the site of continuoushuman activity for more than a thousand years. In Elizabethan times, Ledbury was a small townof some 600 to 650 people, and the market andreligious centre for a further 880 ruralparishioners; some 1500 in all. Yet, despitehaving records for Ledbury going back to 1557and beyond, for this building - unlike othersaround it, there is, as yet, no exact record ofeither its purpose or its inhabitants.

According to Ledbury Parish Church Archives,we learn 'The Parish of Ledbury in the Reign ofQueen Elizabeth l' by the late Miss S.FRobinson, there may have been built here aBooth Hall to replace the original early 15thcentury one sited where the Feathers Hotel isnow. Such a use for this building , with itsconcern for the proper conduct of Ledbury'smarkets and fairs; market toll gathering; theCourt of Piepowder and the control of vagrantsand the distribution of poor law monies, mightwell account for the very particular choice oftexts used in the Painted Room, with theiremphasis on the good citizen, duty and love.

When the Judge’s Lodging closed its doors at theend of the 2013 season, it had no idea just howexciting the following few months would be…

The beautiful gas-lit kitchen in its Victorianjudges’ accommodation became the star ofBBC’s Food & Drink Christmas Special, withhistorian Lucy Worsley exploring the art ofVictorian jelly-making, whilst the lavishlyillustrated reprint of well-known author BillBryson’s book, A Short History of Private Lives, used a full page illustration of the room as theheading to his chapter on the history ofkitchens.

If that wasn’t enough excitement, 2014 haskicked off with the museum being visited byHRH Prince of Wales, who found it a anatmospheric and ‘truly inspirational’ place. Thiswas swiftly followed by it winning Britain’s BestHidden Gem in the Hudson’s Heritage Awards2014 at a ceremony at Goldsmith’s Hall,London, where it was presented by celebrityhosts Lloyd Grossman and Lucinda Lambton.

In 1788 King George III and Queen Charlottevisited the factory after attending the ThreeChoirs Festival in Worcester, His Majestyordered a breakfast service for the Queen and inthe subsequent year awarded the first RoyalWarrant to the Company.

The Victorian era brought new customers whomade their fortune during the IndustrialRevolution and their commissions saw anexplosion of decorative expression, colour andform. This gallery is in total contrast to theGeorgian period as here deep red walls andsumptuous displays form a back drop to an areathat can be hired for special occasions.

In contrast the 20th Century gallery documentseconomic and cultural change, two World Warshad a major effect on the workforce and largenumbers of women took up skilled roles on thefactory floor. The advent of freezers, dishwashers and microwaves also had an impacton tableware, function and design and whilstprivate commissions and orders continued massproduction became the mainstay of thebusiness.
