Peggy Reece HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH!
OFF TO A GOOD START! Everyone wants to get fit in the new year. Oh! the abundance of good intentions and the scarcity of follow– through! But take heart! James Glinn, doctor of physical therapy and founder of the “Movement for Life” clinics which provide fitness, wellness and outpatient rehab in California and Arizona, has some positive words of encouragement for those of us who just can’t keep up with those rigorous gym workouts but want to keep up with our jobs, our kids, grandkids and our recreational goals. “My definition of fitness is to be able to carry out all of the activities in life
that you desire, plus have a physical reserve at the end of the day to do something besides lie down and flip the remote. If you can do all that, if you’re functional, then you’re fit. It doesn't matter if you have great abs or can bench press your body weight. Those things have nothing to do with real life.” So just keep moving so that you CAN keep moving—stretch intentionally and frequently; hit the pool a couple times a week; coddiwomple (travel in a pur-poseful manner towards a vague desti-nation); find something you like to do and WILL do, and you are off to a good start on your good health!
Wonderful It’s the most
time of the year!

common ground and they be-come important to us. The root word for family comes from the word for servant; truly, in a family setting we are serving one another in love.
Family is all about sharing the future, giving hope, showing love; it could be the people serving food with you at the shel-ter during the holidays. Or the neighbor whose pet just died. Or the people you eat with eve-ry night.
Making memories together is a part of our Christmas experi-ence. Let’s make it the most wonderful time of the year by being a blessing to the family we have around us and sharing the future with them by making memories together.
Peggy Reece
Christmas is a time that evokes memories of the past with wistful affection for the moments filled with those quintessential qualities of the holidays: love, joy and peace.
It is a time when we think of our families, and how those things we hope for are tied to those things that we have ex-perienced in the past. The human experience is tied to memories and the anticipa-tion of being together to make more of them. We tend to think of our families as the place for all this to start.
Family takes on many forms and is not only people to whom one is related by blood or marriage. Sometimes at the holidays we find our-selves in a different kind of family; that group of people to whom we are related by our circumstances. Where we live or where we work bring peo-ple into our paths with whom we share the daily experienc-es of life; we unite with loyalty and affection because of our

fortune or contentment. It makes you feel happier; feeling blessed is life-affirming.
If blessed is the word for me to live by this year, the word that describes me, then blessed is infinitely more than what fills my life and makes it whole. It is the outpouring to others of all that being blessed means. To be blessed is a charge to be a blessing in other’s lives.
In our community at Encore, we see the heart of blessing every day. Those who live here are caring neighbors who bear one another’s burdens and make each other laugh when they need it the most. Those who work here strive to provide for the ones in our care the things that are just what they need or want. To cause one to feel blessed is to recognize the intrinsic worth of that person and to share in that worth.
In 2019, let’s live by counting our blessings each day and seeking ways to bless others.
Peggy Reece
If you could pick one word to define what you hope for in the New Year, what would it be? A word to encourage you, guide you, comfort and teach you. A word to remind you of your place in this world. A word that describes you. A word to live by.
For me, it was easy. My cup overflows: a family with loved ones from two months to 92 years old; a patient, devoted husband; caring friends; a fulfilling job. Even with the inevitable trials that come with all of that, I am grateful and blessed. Blessed is my word for 2019.
Sometimes a word can be used with little thought to its original meaning. By definition, blessed means highly favored or fortunate; one dictionary described blessed as a word used for emphasizing that something makes you feel happy or grateful because it is just what you need (or want). A blessing brings good

“Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and auld lang syne?
“For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld land syne,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne.”
These familiar words are attributed
to Robert Burns, Scotland’s national
poet, but unlike “my love’s like a
red, red rose that’s newly sprung in
June” (some of the most quoted
lines of poetry written by Burns)
most people don’t really know what
the words to the song mean. Some-
times deemed the most famous
“song that nobody knows” by music
historians, “Auld Lang Syne” is a
part of the long oral tradition of
drinking and singing. Around the
world it is faithfully sung every year
at the New Year, and a cup is raised
to life and health and “auld lang
syne.”
Literally translated it means “old
long since” or “days gone by,” which
is an appropriate toast for the New
Year. We are probably most familiar
with the version made famous by Guy
Lombardo and His Royal Canadians,
played every New Year’s Eve from
1939 until about 1977, which plays
after the ball drops in Times Square.
So fill your glass with a twinkle of
nostalgia in your eye and sing it like
you mean it! Happy New Year!

Man’s Best Friend
Maybe the best thing about Tuesdays is our Pet Therapy Visit. “Dogs are not our whole
life, but they make our lives whole.” Roger Caras, television personality from Nightline and 20/20, devoted his later years to the
ASPCA and writing books about animals. He also said, “ Dogs have give us their all.
We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has

Therapy on Tuesdays at 3:30 to be the
recipient of some of that puppy love!

traditional Friday Night Movie.
Ahhh, Saturday
After a busy week, most of us think of Saturday as a day to wind down or catch
up on things around the home. We do just
that here, with exercise, “Cuff and Buff,” a relaxing game of Bingo, and maybe we’ll
go for a walk or feed the birds.
And don’t forget our Birthday Party on Wednesday January 30th at 2:00 p.m. “In the
