  • Stumbling into What God Wants By Jeff McCormickSeveral weeks ago I shared during worship about our Guatemala mission trip. This year’s mission trip is July 13 - 20th. At that time I asked for your prayers and your financial support for construction supplies. First and foremost, thank you for your response! We received $900 to help with construction supplies and your prayers are being felt. Please continue to pray for the mission team, our work, the people we will meet, and for God to guide us.

This church has a strong history of summer mission trips. Many would call this our youth’s identity. Others would say that these summer mission trips are when youth have most often experienced the life changing grace of Jesus Christ. Each summer we travel both internationally and within the U.S. Our international trip has been designed for mature high school students. For years we took these trips with a mission organization and trav-eled to Mexico and Guatemala. Although adults traveled with us, the focus has been our high school students. Last year’s trip participants consisted of equal parts high school students, college students, and adults of all ages. In reality, we are an inter-generational trip and that has been a huge blessing. When parents and other adults serve on these mission trips, they are teaching our youth an invaluable lesson. Their honesty, vulnerabil-ity, and willingness to be stretched physically and spiritually connect them and teach them to fully trust in God.

A couple of years ago, as we traveled to Guatemala to serve, God started to build a relationship between many in our church and Mayra and Vinico Garcia who began and run the Kairos school in Guatemala. Since then, we have grown in this relationship and will again serve this year with the Kairos school. This is invaluable to us. It helps us to know the needs of the community and build relationships with children and youth in the school. Each year we can see how God is working in their lives.

We may have stumbled into exactly what God intended for us - to build a life changing, deep relationship with children and a community in Guatemala and to build an inter-generational trip whose identity is Belle Meade UMC - not just the youth of our church. Many of you who have been interested in learning more have contact-ed me and I encourage anyone else to do the same - [email protected] and 615-678-9082. Maybe God is calling you to live a life of compassion and be moved in new spiritual, physical, or emotional ways. Peace, Jeff
