Here we are at the close of what has been a term of mixed blessings. Mixed in the sense that we were “blessed” with an unusual number of extra holidays, but with the “burden” of having lost a serious amount of teaching and learning time. To quote a member of staff: “It has been a very challenging time.” The fact that this has also been an examination term has not made the work requirements any easier. I think I can safely say that the whole school is looking forward to the July vacation with eager anticipation.
You may have noted that the school is also involved in the final phase of the rezoning process and that the Rue de Jacqueline upgrade is approaching completion. While this has been a trying time from a traffic point of view, we can look forward to a much improved situation next term.
Two of our learners, Jeanu du Plooy and Sean Bacon, have been included in the team to represent South Africa in the sports of Wake-boarding and Wake-skating respectively and have embarked on an exciting overseas journey to include Norway and Poland. We wish them well and much success in this adventure.
May I conclude this short message by thanking all members of the “SWPS family”: learners, staff and parents alike, for their positive input during this past term. May you all enjoy a well-earned rest and return safe and rejuvenated to face the third term.

Matric Geography Outing As we drove over the Sir Lowry’s Pass we could only
see the mist blanket that covered the False Bay area
- this added to the excitement of our trip to the
Palmiet Pump Storage Scheme.
On arrival we were greeted by our tour guide,
Vanessa. She received our matric class with a smile as
she took us into the presentation room. There she
told us more about Palmiet and what exactly a pump
storage scheme is. We were all ears and we were
fascinated by all the complicated procedures that go
into running a pump storage scheme.
After the presentation was finished we drove to the
actual power station where we could see for ourselves
just how it works. No surprise, everyone was amazed
and we had a great time looking around the power
station.

For better or worse, I sit here, having completed my exam, finding myself
surrounded by people, yet completely isolated. Left alone with nothing
constructive to do, the mind soon notices the peculiar little things that’s
happening around it; the shuffling of feet, the clicking of a pen, the odd
face palm of a defeated student.
One thing I’ve noticed is that people have different characters when they
are focusing completely on something. You get the people who frown
furiously at their exam paper as if it is personally responsible for the
predicament they’re in (you should have studied….). Then you get those
who fidget compulsively, these are the people who are responsible for the
continuous agonising creaking of tables and chairs. Then you get those
who have conquered the exam (or have been defeated already) and who
are now sleeping, often with faint, whistle like snores.
Then there are those people who are without a doubt the most hated and
abhorred of all people. The people who the rest of us wish to throttle at
times……. the pen clickers. These people repeatedly click their pens,
click click click click. Every time jarring the rest of us back to reality and
away from our thinking. I personally wish to give these people a very
particular pen, like the one from Golden Eye. When you click it enough, it
will explode. But maybe that’s a bit excessive.
So, I ask you: what do you do during the exam? Are you the fidgeter, the
snorer, the furious gazer or are you the most hated of them all, the
dreaded “clicker:?

On behalf of all of us here at SWPS, I would like to congratulate our Physical Sciences teacher,
now Mrs Marlie Stander, on tying the knot!
The small and intimate ceremony was held next to a beautiful waterfall at Cascade Country Manor in Paarl. She told me that she was happy that her
husband wore a pink tie - what a team player!
Mrs Stander looked quite stunning herself! The wedding cake was a carrot cake with cream cheese icing, and instead of the standard bride
and groom on top, there were two little penguins - a reference to how they had met: aboard a ship on the way to Antarctica where
they were both working on projects.
"A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person."
Congratulations!

I spoke to two of the school's aspiring musicians, Rowan Slemon and Trystan Vercuiel. They provided us with live music at the Valentine's Dance and have recently recorded a few songs. We are, of course, all very proud of them and their dedication. I decided to find out a little more about them. J: What is the name of your band? When did you start/join the band? What is the genre of music you mainly play? R: The name of our band is GroundFlower, weird name I know. I met Trystan (the lead guitarist) at school in Grade 8 and our former member, Matthew, at a party. We started around June last year, with the main members being me, Trystan and Matthew. We would jam most weekends and compose our own music - mainly punk, rock etc. Recently though, Trystan and I got together with Arthur and Rudi Dennis of Akkedis for our recording.
J: What instruments can you play and which do you play for the band? R: Drums/percussion/rhythm/guitar/vocals T: Lead guitar/vocals J: Tell me about your recent recording. Where did you do it? How did you come across that opportunity? R: Well we got to do the recording because my older brother, Conor, studies at City Varsity in Cape Town and needed to record a band for a project, so we got two days of studio time for free! We decided to do it with Arthur and Rudi (the guitarist and drummer of the popular band Akkedis) with Arthur on guitar and vocals and Rudi on bass. J: Obviously you need to spend lots of time practising by yourselves and with the band. How do you balance the different aspects of your life? R: (he laughs before answering) Yeah, it's hard to balance it out, but for me music is more important than anything else. J: Where do you see yourselves and the band in 5 years? R: Millionaires? No, nothing happens that quickly…. probably having a great time playing gigs and desperately trying to make some money! .
J: Would you like to study after school or are you going to pursue a music career? If so, do you think that it is a viable option? R&T: Definitely a musical career. I know most people think that starting a band is fun for a while as a hobby but in the long run is a stupid idea and not a viable career. But we have a lot of contacts in the South African music industry. We can have free studio time whenever we need it at some of the best recording studios in Cape Town. We can get gigs easily, and most of all we have a huge passion for music and not for the money we make from it, but for the feeling you get from playing something you wrote with your best friends in front of an audience and giving them the message you want to convey in your lyrics or whatever J: What is the best/most important thing you have learned from music/a musician? R: To have fun, be yourself, entertain people and not care about making millions. Also that for me is the greatest thing in the world. J: Any advice for those wanting to start learning to play an instrument/to start a band? R&T: Do it. Even if you suck. Most famous bands like Nirvana and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers started out not knowing anything about music and just messing around and playing stupid songs, and look at them now!
Also, you don't need Fender guitars or a shiny 20 grand drum kit - we started with acoustic guitars and a dilapidated old drum kit! It's never about the equipment, it's about how much love and passion you have for music and entertaining people. We'll be selling our first album (with 2 tracks) soon. Seeing as we didn't pay for the recording and have no need to make any money at the moment, there is no set price on the CD. You decide what it's worth. If you don't think it's worth anything, then you can have it for free. Otherwise, decide if you think it's worth R10, R50 or whatever. Thanks to Akkedis for their time, Conor Slemon & Keenan Fourie for recording us, and anyone who buys the CD or comes to our shows. A huge congratulations and thanks to these two guys for telling me all about their band, their music and their passion!

Our Hoodies look great!!!!
They showcase the personality of our group perfectly in terms of the
minimalistic design, the comfortable shape and the choice of colours.
We designed the hoodies as a group and thought that the ∑ sign was
perfect for our Grade 12 SWPS students. We are the “sum of” a group
of individuals and although we are different we can come together as a
whole.
As for the colour scheme, we were indecisive between charcoal and
black and therefore decided on both colours with the same design for
everyone. But yet ,each of our hoodies are unique in that we have our
names /nicknames printed on the back. So each hoodie has its own
“personality”.
All-in-all, I think we did a great job and I hope we’ve made an impact on
the designs to come

After completing the Core Maths program, I can conclude that it will most definitely help any individual with their pure maths course in school, as it gives you a complete guide through the basics. With this background knowledge now accessible, you can apply yourself more in class, and it is always a great feeling to have the right answer. To conclude, it is near impossible to do pure maths without Core Maths and, after the course, it becomes much more of a pleasure - rather than torture - to learn maths. I suggest this program to anyone who is achieving slightly under what they would like to in maths, or anyone who is simply keen to learn more in a very easy, simple and user friendly way. OLIVER BLEMING
Core Maths was my solution to the struggle I had towards everyday mathematical problems. Not only did it improve my maths marks tremendously, but it taught me to try and try again until I succeed. ROCHELLE ROUX
