SHENGLI AMERICAN EXPRESS REXAKA “REX” – Born August 5, 1995

Rex was born August 5/94 so is soon to benine. Rex has always been kind of a Jokerand has had a very laid back personalitysince we first brought him home as a youngpup. His humor always keeps us in stitchesand he has kept more people in their carssince having all his teeth removed then heever did. Keeping this in mind and the facthe loves puppies, he is a great babysitterand teacher. Even the pups don’t clue in toGrandpas antics and although a little lesstolerant to rambunctious teenagers theynever seem to realize his bark IS muchbigger then his bite. Rex has been a big partof our lives and a base for our breedingprogram. Although not a show dog himselfhe has produced multiple champions. AM/CAN/INT. CH. TIMBE’S GOOD NEWSOF MARKAKA “MARK” – Born August 24, 1992

Mark came to us in January 1995 as an AM.CH. He arrived late one night when Jim wasat work. He moved in and felt so at homethat he wasn’t going to let Jim in the housewhen he came home from work early thenext A.M. It has always felt like Mark was“ours”. He has been a joy to live with and toshow. He was Best Of Breed at CanadianNationals in 1995. Mark has entertained us,worried us, challenged us, and educated usabout this wonderful breed. Above all he hasloved us unconditionally. In spite of his 10years and 9 months, he is still “King of theHill”. He loves the puppies, and on a good

day still thinks he’s a puppy himself. That’sour Mark!

CH. MOONBEAMS MI-TE MAX AT MIWEI,CDAKA “MAX” – Born October 23, 1995

Max, or “Big Rig” as he is affectionatelyknown, is very special to us. Max was ourfirst puppy Champion, multiple Breedwinner, and multiple Group placer. He alsoachieved his CD with good scores and classplacements. Although Max’s show record isimpressive, it will be his mark as a sire thatwe will always remember him by. Max hashad such an influence on our breedingprogram. His first Champion “Angel” hascontinued on his tradition of being amultiple Breed winner and Group placer. Weare eagerly awaiting for his latest son “Solo”to grow up and follow in dad’s footprints.Retired from the breed ring, Max is trainingfor his CDX, which we hope to obtain thisNationals weekend. Max will always hold aspecial place with us because of hisaccomplishments, but mostly because of thejoy he brings to our lives.

CH. MIWEI’S CHOCOLATE ÉCLAIRAKA “COCO” – Born August 26, 1994

Coco has the distinction of being the firstChampion for MIWEI. Coco is the “ham” ofthe house, always goofing off to getattention. Coco loves to bark at the horses, sun herself on her doghouse, make hugemesses with the straw in her doghouse, andtelling everyone that the 10+ bones in thekennel are HERS!! Coco’s other favouritepastimes include chewing wood (hence thenickname “Beaver”), and keeping those“pesky” Shepherds in line. She also loves topatrol the yard in the evening, making sureeverything is okay. We are very proud ofCoco and happy that she can participate inthis years’ National Specialty.

MIWEI’S LIN LEE, CDX, TT, CGCAKA “LINNY” – Born September 25, 1992

Linny is from our second litter and our firstdog to achieve obedience titles. In 1994Linny achieved her Temperament Test, andin 1995 she obtained her Canine GoodCitizen title. Linny was campaigned inobedience for 5 years; three of those yearswere spent as Canada’s #1 obedience Shar-

Pei. Linny retired after the 2000 NationalsSpecialty where she achieved the HighestQualifying Score in Trial by a Shar-Pei.Since her retirement she spends her dayssleeping on the couch and keeping thepuppies in line, and occasionally, lending ahelping “hand” to Max for stay practice. Weare very proud of Linny and all of heraccomplishments. Although old age iscatching up with her, she remains one of the“Top” dogs in our home and hearts.PARADE OF CHAMPIONS

JUDGES CRITIQUE

I wish to thank the Club for the pleasure ofjudging your National Specialty. Breed typewas very apparent and I felt there was gooddepth of quality in the entry. Bites were excel-lent overall. Toplines on many of the dogswere too level. your standard is specific and itis a difficult topline to breed. The tempera-ments were outstanding and the breeders areto be commended for their work since thebreed was recognized in Canada. Beautifultrophies completed the very successful day.

Thank you,

Donna Cole

Lee Anne Palutke52307 Rge Rd 224Sherwood Park, ABT8C 1B8

June 15, 2003

Alberta Chinese Shar-Pei Association

Dear Members:

Please let me start by thanking your Club membersfor asking me to judge at your Regional Specialty.I considered it a great honour and enjoyed theassignment completely. Your hospitality on theweekend and at the lively and fun-filled banquetwas truly appreciated.

I was very impressed with the over-all quality ofthe Shar-Pei in competition. Your breed, due todiligent attention to breeding type and soundness, has improved over the years.

I’d like to start my discussion with the generalimpression I got as each exhibit walked into thering. For the most part, the exhibits followed aclassic outline and, variance in size aside, I foundthe outlines and body proportions of your Shar-Peipleasing and correct. I saw very few toplines thatdidn’t have the requisite flow through theshoulders and rise over the loin.

The heads on your dogs and bitches were lovely. The bitches, I felt, rather excelled in this area withsome very striking headpieces. Bites were verygood. I know there can be some problems there, soI commend you on the work you’ve done settinghead type and keeping good strong scissor bites onyour dogs.

The coats were a pleasure to get hands on and feelthe correct harsh texture.

Fronts were generally very good, although I didnotice a few fronts that had a bit more play in themthan could be considered desirable. This is anotherarea where I feel you as breeders have paid somestrict attention and it is really paying off in thesoundness of your dogs. Feet were mostly good andlet’s face it, if a dog doesn’t have good feet theydon’t have a lot to stand on.

Rear quarters were excellent and seeing the nice, moderate amount of sleek muscling leads me tobelieve that you prize the athletic ability of thesedogs. Rears were strong and true going out and werein good contact with ground, showing power on theside.

Tail sets were all very good – nice and high withgood substance at the root.

I would like to commend you as exhibitors andbreeders for showing such quality animals and forhaving them in good competitive condition. From theJunior Puppies to the Veterans, you have dogs youcan be very proud of. I would also like to commenton the lovely temperaments of your dogs and howeasy they were to go over and examine.

I was very impressed with the young dogs andbitches entered in the Specialty. I applaud thedirection you are taking your breed in and theattention to detail and soundness that you obviouslyare putting into your breeding programs.

Thank you once again for giving me the opportunityto be part of your Specialty.

Sincerely,

Lee Anne Palutke

ORIGIN and PURPOSE — It is generally ac-cepted that the Chinese Shar-Pei originated dur-ing the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD) in thevillage of Dah-Let near the South China Sea.These dogs were all-purpose working dogs toguard the family, farms and temples.

GENERAL APPEARANCE— An alert, dignified, active, compact dog of medium size and sub-stance, square in profile, close-coupled, the wellproportional head slightly but not overly large forthe body. The short harsh coat, the loose skincovering the head and body, the small ears, the“hippopotamus” muzzle shape and the high settail impart to the Shar-Pei a unique look peculiarto him alone. The loose skin and wrinkles cover-ing the head, neck and body are superabundantin puppies but these features may be limited tothe head, neck and withers in the adult.

SIZE, PROPORTION, SUBSTANCE — Thepreferred height is 18 to 20 inches (45-50 cm) atthe withers. The preferred weight is 40 to 55pounds (18-25 kilo). The dog is usually larger andmore square bodied than the bitch but bothappear well proportioned. Proportion: The heightof the Shar-Pei from the ground to the withers isapproximately equal to the length from the pointof breastbone to the point of rump.

HEAD — Large, slightly but not overly, proudlycarried and covered with profuse wrinkles on theforehead continuing into side wrinkles framingthe face. Eyes dark, small, almond-shaped andsunken, displaying a scowling expression. In thedilute colored dogs the eye color may be lighter.Ears extremely small rather thick, equilateraltriangles in shape, slightly rounded at the tips, edges of the ear may curl. Ears lie flat against thehead, are set wide apart and forward on the skull, pointing toward the eyes. The ears have theability to move. Pricked ears are a disqualifica-tion. Skull flat and broad, the stop moderately

defined. Muzzle. One of the distinctive featuresof the breed. It is broad and full with no sugges-tion of snipiness. The length from nose to stop isapproximately the same as from stop to occiput.Nose large and wide and darkly pigmented, preferably black but any color nose conformingto the general coat color of the dog is accept-able. In dilute colors, the preferred nose is self-colored. Darkly pigmented cream Shar-Pei mayhave some light pigment either in the center oftheir noses or on their entire nose. The lips andtop of the muzzle are well padded and maycause a slight bulge at the base of the nose.Tongue, Roof of Mouth, Gums and Flews. Solidbluish-black is preferred in all coat colors exceptin dilute colors, which have a solid lavenderpigmentation. A spotted tongue is a major fault.A solid pink tongue is a disqualification. (Tonguecolors may lighten due to heat stress; care mustbe taken not to confuse dilute pigmentation witha pink tongue.) Teeth strong, meeting in a scis-sors bite. Deviation from a scissors bite is amajor fault.

NECK, TOPLINE, BODY — Neck mediumlength, full and set well into the shoulders. Thereare moderate to heavy folds of loose skin andabundant dewlap about the neck and throat. Thetopline dips slightly behind the withers, slightlyrising over the short, broad loin. Chest broad anddeep with the brisket extending to the elbow andrising slightly under the loin. Back short andclose-coupled. Croup flat, with the base of thetail set extremely high, clearly exposing an uptiltedanus. The high set tail is a characteristic featureof the Shar-Pei. The tail is thick and round at thebase, tapering to a fine point and curling over toeither side of the back. The absence of acomplete tail is a disqualification.

FOREQUARTERS — Shoulders: Muscular, welllaid back and sloping. Forelegs: When viewedfrom the front, straight, moderately spaced, withelbows close to the body. When Breed Standardviewed from the side, the forelegs are straight, the pasterns are strong and flexible. The bone issubstantial but never heavy and is of moderatelength. Removal of front dewclaws is optional.Feet. Moderate in size, compact and firmly set,not splayed.

HINDQUARTERS — Muscular, strong, and mod-erately angulated. The metatarsi (hocks) areshort, perpendicular to the ground and parallelto each other when viewed from the rear. Hinddewclaws must be removed. Feet as in front.

COAT — The extremely harsh coat is one of thedistinguishing features of the breed. The coat is

absolutely straight and offstanding on the maintrunk of the body but generally lies somewhatflatter on the limbs. The coat appears healthywithout being shiny or lustrous. Acceptable coatlengths may range from the extremely short“horse coat” up to the “brush coat,” not to exceedone inch in length at the withers. A soft coat, awavy coat, a coat in excess of 1" (2.5cm) inlength at the withers or a coat that has beentrimmed is a major fault. The Shar-Pei is shownin its natural state.

COLOR — Only solid colors are acceptable. Asolid colored dog may have shading, primarilydarker down the back and on the ears. Theshading must be variations of the same bodycolor (except in sables) and may include darkerhairs throughout the coat. The following colorsare a disqualifying fault: Not a solid color, ie,:Albino; Brindle; Parti-colored (patches); Spotted(including spots, ticked or roaning); Tan-PointedPatterns (including typical black and tan or sad-dled patterns).

GAIT — the movement of the Shar-Pei is to bejudged at a trot. The gait is free and balancedwith the feet tending to converge on a center lineof gravity when the dog moves at a vigorous trot. The gait combines good forward reach and astrong drive in the hindquarters. Proper move-ment is essential.

TEMPERAMENT — Regal, alert, intelligent, dig-nified, lordly, scowling, sober and snobbish, essentially independent and somewhat stand-offish with strangers, but extreme in his devotionto his family. The Shar-Pei stands firmly on theground with a calm, confident stature.

MAJOR FAULTS

1. Deviation from a scissors bite.

2. Spotted tongue.

3. A soft coat, a wavy coat, a coat in excessof 1" (2.5cm) in length at the withers or acoat that has been trimmed.

DISQUALIFICATION

1. Pricked Ears.

2. Solid Pink Tongue.

3. Absence of a complete tail.

4. Not a solid color, ie,: Albino; Brindle; Parti-colored (patches); Spotted (including spots, ticked or roaning); Tan-Pointed Pattern(including typical black and tan or saddledpatterns).
