October 4 Jack Peebles Matthew 21:23-32 The Two Sons

October 18 Jack Peebles Matthew 22:1-14 The Wedding Banquet

As I am writing this, I am preparing to go to the fall board meeting of the Outreach Foundation. The mission of the Outreach Foundation is to engage Presbyterians in Christ-centered evangelistic mission for the salvation of humankind. I serve on the board because I am passion-ate about missions. Inevitably, the question is asked: “Why do we need to go to a foreign country for mission work when there is so much to do right in our own backyard?” I have heard it asked numerous times. My response has almost become reflex: To build up the body of Christ!

In his letter to the Romans, Paul expresses his intention to be with them. Keeping in mind that Paul has never set foot in Rome prior to this correspondence, he expresses his desire:

“For I am longing to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift to strengthen you- or rather so that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.” (Rom. 1:11-12, NRSV)

Our perception of mission is one of concrete, cinder blocks and marl. That is not to say that construction is not an important component of mission work, but it is not the essential component of mission work. The apostle Paul longed to see the Christians in Rome, not because he intended on starting a building project, but because he wanted to share with them a “spiritual gift” for the purpose of strengthening the body of Christ, with the hope that they would be “mutually encouraged” by one another.

October is mission month. Our mission conference is set for October 9-11th. You can find more information on page 14. Dr. Darrell Guder, the Academic Dean at Princeton Theological Semi-nary, will be our keynote speaker. He will also be preaching at all three services on Sunday. Dr. Guder is the editor and one of the contributors of “The Missional Church: A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North America.” I had the great pleasure of working with Dr. Guder during my time at Princeton. He challenges the church not to think of missions in terms of a program, but as the responsibility of each and every member of the church. As our culture becomes increasingly secular, the mission field is every-where! Each of us, then, has a mission and ministry!

I have spent quite a bit of time talking with people about their mission experiences and I love to do it! The common reaction is that by being there we gain so much more than the community members on whose houses we have worked. It sounds funny, but it is the truth. Paul knew what he was talking about in his letter to the Romans. Every year, we go to places like Ethiopia, Cambo-dia and Egypt not because there is nothing to do in “our own backyards,” but because we seek to build up the body of Christ. It’s not just about building construction, it’s about building faith. As is often the case when we travel, we get more help than we give. Let me invite you to join us and hear Dr. Guder in person, while we celebrate missions!

In the grip of grace,

Pastor Jack

PARENTING is a challenging job! Just when we think we have things figured out, our kids reach a new stage of development and we’re in a learning curve once again. As Christian parents we have an even bigger challenge to instill Christ like character in our children and help them to know and serve God. At FPC we want to provide parents with every opportunity to develop the tools and the encouragement we need to help our families thrive.

Mark your calendar for Saturday November 14th to attend FOCUS ON PARENTING a live simulcast confer-ence where you will join thousands of parents all across the country. This conference, presented by Focus on the Family will give us practical tools for parenting in every stage. The line up of speakers include such leading parent-ing experts as Dr. Kevin Leman, Elisa Morgan (MOPS), Larry Fowler (AWANA), Ron Luce (President of Teen Mania), Paul Vischer (Cre-ator of Veggie Tales), and many more.

FPC will be the official Yakima host site for this Live event brought to you by Family Minsitry, Children’s Ministry, Student Minis-try, Preschool Ministry, and MOPS Ministry. For more information on the conference go to www.ccn.tv/focusonparenting/ Conference /

neW beGinninGS While many of us think of January as the start of a new year and a fresh start on leading a better life, for the thousands of students and educators across the country, September also marks a similar beginning. Teachers and students are all hoping that the next nine months will be wonderfully rewarding. At First Presbyterian Church we too have started some new concepts and programs during the month of September. As we move into October, we are hoping these changes will be uplifting and fulfilling for ourselves and those around us. More importantly, we hope that these endeavors will be pleasing to God as we try to care for one another and live according to His will. We tend to think of fresh starts as coming at prescribed times throughout the year or at certain points in our lives. The truth of the matter is we always have a fresh start available through the grace and love of our Lord, Jesus Christ. As we face the challenges of the day or a stressful time, He is always there for us offering us a new beginning. He will be with us, right at our side. As Psalm 103:12-13 so beautifully tells us , “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so has the Lord compassion on those who fear him.” Take time to celebrate your own new beginning with Him. “This is the day that the Lord hath made. Rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

There’s No Place Like Rome!I worry when attention is called to the years of service in Children’s Ministries-why would anyone want to sign up for a job that has no end? Rather, let’s celebrate the adults who are willing to try, those who have watched and wanted to find a place to belong, those who want to know more about the amazing energy and power that de-fines Children’s Ministries. The need for volunteers is great, continues throughout the year and offers flexibility which will fit nearly everyone’s calendar. “Jesus loves the little ones” begins a favorite song we sing in the 3 year old class during the middle hour on Sundays. I call it “SonBeam Therapy,” and it has become essential to my own spiritual wellness. I try to never miss my dose of SonBeams each week. The Sonbeams are ready to learn, and very willing to hear the basic lessons we all need-God loves us, Jesus is our friend and the Bible tell us true stories. As these young children become comfortable in our class, they are learning lessons that will last a lifetime. My life has been enriched. I have friends who greet me in the grocery store: “Mom, there’s my OLD teacher!” I have the privilege of meeting young families and earning their trust as they allow the circle of security around their children to broaden. I am a member of a spe-cial team of adults-we share responsibilities so not one of us feels bur-dened, but we do notice when one is absent. We all agree that it is the fastest 90 minutes of our week! There is no better feeling than finding the perfect fit where service becomes a blessing; as you search your heart, consider a trial of this amazing prescription. There is a place for you in Children’s Ministries!

retreat “Amazing!”

“I didn’t want to come because I was so busy, but I’m so glad I came.”

“This one day really affected me deeply.” These were comments I heard about the Women’s Retreat held at Ghormley Meadow on Saturday, September 13. We were so blessed by the music, the funny stories, the inspiring mes-sage and the enigmatic personality of Julie Hoy. The fifty plus women who ventured to Ghormley Meadow on this beautiful day came away recommitted in their relationship with the Lord and with one another. We experienced one more little piece of heaven.

Singer-Songwriter Julie Hoy (L) shared her gifts with us.

WHat a Great SuMMer! With the early September rains and warm afternoons of sun-shine, Ghormley has once again begun its transformation into an autumn paradise of colors, crisp nights and pungent fall smells. Retreat season is now in full swing. During the month of October we will host 11 different groups including public schools, Christian schools and several churches. In addition to these, we also have three of our own events that we would love to have you join. On October 9-11 we will be hosting our Father-Son weekend, entitled, “Backyard Ballistics”. As the name implies, we intend to blow up a lot of things and do all kinds of “manly” things with our fathers and sons, grandfathers and grandsons. Quality time for dads to spend quantity time with their sons, building their very own air cannon, rocket and marshmallow gun. Other activities include paintball, BB Rifles, archery, hatchet throwing and challenge course initiatives. All designed to build lifelong memories and strenghten the essential relationships our young men need so desperately. For more details, a brochure and to register, go to our website www.ghormleymeadow.org. If you would like to help your camp in a very tangible way, we have set aside Saturday, October 24th as our fall volunteer work day. Come on out for a day of various work projects to help us prepare for winter and the holiday season. A variety of projects suitable for any age and ability will be available. Plus you get a free lunch out of the deal, how can you beat that? Please circle the date on your calendar and plan now to help us out. Finally, if you are a homeschooling family or know of one, check out our Ghormley Outdoor Academy scheduled for Mon-Wed, October 26-28. Over the course of three days, students will have multiple hands-on classes, taught in God’s classroom, includ-ing survival skills, animal adaptations, fire building, conservation, water sheds, etc. Each lesson involves group participation, activities and is taught from a biblical perspective. Entire families are encour-aged to attend. For more details, a brochure and to register, go to our website: www.ghormleymeadow.org. Never a dull moment around here. Too bad we have to live year round in such a beautiful and magnificent corner of God’s amazing creation. Oh well, I guess somebody has to do it!

God bless,

Mark Washam

a FOND farwellDear First Pres Friends:

Back in 1995 conversations began which led Kathaleen and I to return to Yakima in January of 1996 after several years serving a church in Phoenix. We brought with us Rosie who was 3 ½ at the time, and Tyler who was 1 ½. Looking back to that slippery winter drive from Phoenix to Ghormley, we are so very thankful to God for nearly 14 years living life together with you. It has been an honor to be a part of the incredible work of God here at First Presby-terian Church Yakima. God has been at work transforming the lives of individuals and families as we have learned more, and lived more, of the call and command God has given us to, “love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, with all of your mind, and with all of your strength … and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:28-31)

What a privilege for us to be partners with you in: Habitat homes, Careforce, outreach to families, comforting the hurting, the clothing exchange, filling 1000+ shopping bags for the homeless, loving students and children, studying the Bible together, boldly sharing the hope of Jesus, tens of thousands making a first time commitment to Christ at Ghormley and countless others taking a step or three closer to Jesus, rebuilding homes and lives in New Orleans, serving in Yetebon, Battambong, Mexico, Migori and right here in the Yakima Valley. What is exciting for Kathaleen and me, Rosie and Tyler, is that God has a wonderful future for First Pres Yakima, and for all of you who are a part of this amazing church community. You have great leaders and a great staff in place, a passionate tender heart for Jesus and for your neighbors, and you have the sure promise and faithfulness of God. You have been, and will continue to be, blessed by God to be a blessing to those inside and outside the walls of the church. You have the reputation of caring for, loving and supporting your pastors, and I am confident you will continue that beautiful legacy.

We will always look to you, and our time in Yakima, as an undeserved blessing and gift of God. Thank you for your investment individually and as a church in our lives, and in the lives of Rosie and Tyler (through Preschool, Childcare, Kidzone, Ghormley, Student Ministries and missions).

We have supported each other during difficult times and we have shared many joys as we have grown closer to Jesus and closer to each other. Wherever God leads us (currently we are in discussions with a number of very good churches) we will think of you, pray for you and thank God for our years together and our continuing friendships.

Under the mercy and care of Jesus,

Curt, Kathaleen, Rosie and Tyler
