Editor’s Message

Let me start by saying that Here & Now Magazine is proud to support Bradford Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Awareness Month with this fabulous Pink

Edition! Read more about their great work inside. Well summer has been and gone (passing many of us by unnoticed!), and it’s officially countdown to Christmas! Amazingly I do believe that things are turning for the better, speaking with many of our advertisers there is certainly a more positive feeling and I have been asked to say thank you to our loyal readers who are supporting local businesses, it is great to hear such feedback. Local businesses really appreciate your support and realise that this has gone a long way towards many of them riding out this horribly difficult year, so we too would like to say thank you. In the run up to Christmas it is usual for everyone who has been contemplating any home improvements, whether that is new windows and doors, garage conversions, decorating, new carpets, furniture or beds, (the list is endless), to have these things done, purchased and in situ by Christmas. In this edition of Here & Now, as usual you will find local, reputable and reliable suppliers for all of your home, health and leisure needs and keeping it local really pays as you are assured of the best service and prices. That said, we also have a superb Bridal feature in this edition and for anyone planning a forthcoming wedding, there are some wonderful ideas to make sure your special day is just that, and one you will not forget for all the right reasons. There are even more reader offers for you to take advantage of ...make sure you do!

Unique and user-friendly air resistance equipment used at LadyZoneAnne Murray, LadyZone Member. See testimonial opposite

If you could take a magic pill – a little miracle that would help you lose weight, create the best body you can have, and reduce your risk of many major diseases – would you go for it? I’m sure you would. And at LadyZone, your 30 minute Relaxed Workout, we can offer you all these benefits and more. Many women are afraid

that resistance-training will bulk them up, giving them muscles akin to Arnold Schwarzenegger, favouring more the high impact cardio workouts that promise to burn a zillion calories an hour. Of course it’s important to raise your heart rate with cardio exercise but ignore resistance work at your peril. The LadyZone circuit is specifically designed to incorporate all elements of fitness (cardiovascular, resistance, free exercises and flexibility) utilising machines that have been designed for women, in order to give a balanced workout. However, the benefits of resistance exercise are sometimes underestimated. Here are just a few of the great advantages that you might not be aware of: You’re slimming and trimming. You know that strength training helps you build muscle. What you might not know is that the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn all day, every day. In fact, one key study showed that after just 12 weeks of lifting weights, people burned 15% more calories per day – even while just sitting. This means the average woman could eat about 300 extra

calories per day without gaining weight. Not that you should eat more, but it means that as long as your weight was stable prior to starting the exercise programme, your diet can remain the same and you can still lose fat. You’re slowing down the ageing process. Every year after about the age of 40, most of us lose about half a pound of muscle, reducing the number of calories we burn and increasing the odds that we’ll give in to the dreaded middle-age spread. Strength training helps you reverse that process by maintaining or building new muscle, which in turn helps fight the flab.

You stop beating yourself up for those ‘fat days’. Research shows that resistance exercise helps increase your positive body image. This is probably because the benefits of resistance training are much more visible than cardio training. In only a few weeks, you can see the firmness of muscle where flab used to be – or you can do more repetitions than you used to – and that makes you feel good. And research shows that the

Your 30 Minute Relaxed Workout

more effort you put into your workout and strength you gain, the higher your self-esteem. You’re building strong bones. When you’re in your 30s, your body loses the ability to spontaneously build bone, which means you have to help it along – or risk the developing osteoporosis. One of the best ways to stimulate bone growth is working with weights. This is even more important after the menopause. After 35, the natural building up and tearing down of bone starts to slow and you begin to lose bone faster than you’re making it. The loss of bone density accelerates as oestrogen levels dwindle during the menopause. But strength training can reverse that trend – not only helping you stop bone loss, but actually building bone as well. You’re more likely to beat the No.1 killer. Breast cancer gets all the press but heart disease is the top killer of women. Strength training has been shown to lower blood pressure and artery-clogging LDL cholesterol, while raising good cholesterol (HDL), therefore significantly reducing your risk of heart disease. One recent study found that people who did resistance exercise lowered their risk by 23%. You’re keeping your blood sugar low. The next epidemic isn’t swine flu, it’s type 2 diabetes – a disease related to obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure that can lead to a host of serious physical problems including heart attacks and blindness. Experts predict that within the next 30 years, one in three people will be struck with this disease. But you don’t have to be a statistic: Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to meet the body’s needs or the insulin is not metabolised effectively by the muscles. When you train using weights, your muscles become more efficient at metabolising glucose and your blood sugar levels become better regulated – and your risk of becoming obese and developing type 2 diabetes is greatly reduced.

You’re reducing joint pain. A study performed at Tufts University in Boston found that after for months of strength training, people with osteoarthritis (the type that comes from wear and tear on the joints) had 43% less knee pain and vastly improved their mobility, all because they built the muscles surrounding their knees. Some people with rheumatoid arthritis (the autoimmune form of the disease) say strength training has helped them as well.

The LadyZone ‘Your 30 Minute Relaxed Workout’, has given member Anne Murray, who suffers from arthritis, a new lease of life. She is 69 and has lost 21/2 stone and 26 inches with Ladyzone without changing her diet!

Before Ladyzone I was overweight, my cholesterol and blood pressure were sky high and I was out of breath all the time. I needed to do something drastically but

didn’t know what to do. I’d tried dieting before but it doesn’t increase your fitness levels and although I’ve lost weight before by dieting I always put it back on. I felt I had no options left. It was then that my daughter and husband read about Ladyzone and encouraged me to join. Even then I was dreading it. I thought everyone would be so much younger than me – which they’re not. Well I’ve lost two-and-a-half stone and I feel as fit as a fiddle. I’ve had to buy new clothes and re-use old clothes that I haven’t

been able to fit into for years. Now every time my daughter sees me she comments on how much better I look and even calls me ‘Twiggy!’ I’m so much happier and so is my family. “I’ve got arthritis in my feet, spine and hands and was therefore worried in the beginning that it might be a problem – but it wasn’t. Laura, (one of Ladyzone’s personal trainers) specifically designed my workout to incorporate all my injuries and problems. In fact, I had a knee replacement a few months after joining Ladyzone and was able to get straight back into training after only a few weeks. “The circuit system makes the time fly and I often think ‘Is it time to get off already?’ I am able to find time to come four or five times a week because its only 30 minutes out of my day. “The staff are all so lovely and I love Ladyzone so much that I recommend it to everyone – I even told the lady on the bus this morning!”

team to visit her gym and do free skin analysis and consultations. Here’s how it works. Have you ever wondered how your lifestyle is affecting the age of your skin or if your skin care routine is right for you? Your skin is as individual as you are and understanding how to take better care of your skin, according to its needs, will enable you to achieve and maintain a lifetime of healthy and beautiful skin. Using the most advanced skin imaging technology, as seen on programmes such as 10 Years Younger, a trueskin consultation reveals your true skin health and underlying problems 2mm beneath the skin surface. This insight into the future of your

skin starts with a consultation with a trueskin expert, lasting for approximately 30 minutes. This involves taking digital photographs of your entire face using True White light and other special patented light techniques. The specialised software then analyses your images and calculates your personal trueskin scores for wrinkles, skin bacteria, UV damage, congested pores, excessive oil and overall complexion. This all sounds very scary so I had to take the test to see and I can report that my own skin is in pretty good condition, with

minimal sun damage and signs of ageing; however, it has to be pointed out that I am blessed with a Mediterranean complexion so this was what I had hoped for and expected. Others with very light complexions had a dramatically different result from taking the test and the great thing is that trueskin also advises on the best skin care and make up products for each individual person to treat, repair and rejuvenate while helping to protect your skin against future damage. Thank you Karen! Another very successful, interesting and helpful member’s event and just one of the reasons why LadyZone in Pudsey is one of the most successful ladies only gyms in the area!

We recently went to see our daughter and her boyfriend for the weekend. On the Saturday lunchtime, we were treated to High Tea at the Hilton in

Manchester in their appropriately named restaurant “Cloud 23” (You will be familiar with the phrase “on Cloud 9”, so this is obviously higher than that!) Being a Bank Holiday weekend, the Pride carnival was making its way around the city streets and we had superb aerial views from the patio windows as we tucked into our High Tea. This was quite a posh affair. Each tier of the tall cake-stand had an array of finger sandwiches and various yummy cakes and fruit tarts, served with silver teapots of tea – very indulgent! The colourful pageant below us had people on floats dressed in vivid costumes, or swirling in the roads as they strutted along to the accompaniment of marching bands. There were fire engines, people on stilts with long arms stretching the full width of the street, line dancers and dancers in sequins and feathers and hundreds of revellers forming a continuous snake winding along every street. After the tea, we went to the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. Here we found exhibits of scientific discoveries, industry and innovation, transport and the evolution of energies that have transformed our homes. The men-folk were enthralled by the aviation section and had fun in the flight simulation machines. We ended the day by returning to our daughter’s apartment to enjoy a nice home-made lasagne with a bottle of wine and then relaxing for the evening. The next day we did a walk around

Lever Park and Rivington Pike, starting through woodland alongside the man-made lake and leading to the remains of The Castle. This had archways and corridors to explore, with views of Rivington Pike in the distance on one side, and of the stretch of lake on the other. From there we continued along tracks and pathways. We heard a cacophony of animal noises as we passed a wire netting fence, and suddenly we were confronted by two small black pigs, a goose, some small billy goats and a peculiar looking hen with a head like Worzel Gummage, all vying for attention against the netting. Our track led us ever upwards, where we could see the tower at the top of Rivington Pike looming ahead. The surrounding views revealed the extent of the huge lake, stretching below us. The climb up the steep steps to the

tower rewarded us with magnificent panoramic vistas over Lancashire. The return leg took us to the Pigeon Tower, formerly used as a sewing room by Lady Lever, where she could enjoy the extensive views. We took the steep descent through the Japanese terraced gardens, with bridges and waterfalls and a myriad of paths and tracks. We were all feeling hungry when we came across what we imagined might be a small sandwich area. Much to our surprise and delight, it was actually a huge medieval barn where a carvery was available, with alternative hot food. So, of course, we tucked in to a hearty lunch after our long walk. We later made our way across the Pennines back home to Yorkshire, having thoroughly enjoyed our interesting weekend.

A Junior PensionerWeekend in Lancashire

July saw the Yorkshire College of Beauty’s 23rd Annual Graduation at the Royal Armouries, Leeds. A very successful evening was had by all, especially our award winners who have shown dedication and

commitment throughout their Advanced Apprenticeship course and thoroughly deserved their award status. This year’s graduation saw a 100% achievement of qualification, with over 85% of the students already in employment on completion of the course. The college continues to offer an excellent standard and is the largest provider of apprenticeships in beauty therapy in England. We have built up an enviable reputation over the years providing first class training. The night included a drinks reception and a cocktail bar followed by a delicious 3 course meal, the awards ceremony and finished by lots of dancing. An excellent night was had by all including representation from the LSC (Learning and skills council. On behalf of all the staff at the Yorkshire College of Beauty, we would like to wish all 2009 graduates good luck and continued success in their future careers.

As Bradford Cancer Support celebrates their first anniversary in their new home, Daisy House Farm, they launch a new initiative – THE

WELLBEING SERVICE. This is a re-design to improve their existing provision and to coincide with their birthday and the timing was perfect to introduce the first steps of this enhanced service. With an holistic approach, this service is all about the person, not just the disease. Their aim is to improve the service to clients by “adding life to days.” By introducing a new staff structure, they have started to provide face-to-face review meetings with clients which ensure the patient/carers are receiving the most appropriate help and support for their individual needs at the most appropriate times. They have also introduced a course for clients to help with coping strategies which is proving very effective. As Janet Thorgersen, Wellbeing Service Manager, says: “As no two clients are the same, we will provide a person-focussed service to meet individual needs. There will be a review process too, ensuring the clients’ needs are met at appropriate stages in their journey. This will also allow a more integrated approach with the other services of the charity such as support groups and welfare needs.” Bradford Cancer Support remains a unique independent and local charity offering services to patients and carers in the Bradford Metropolitan District. Last year they met almost 4,000 people raising awareness of the charity and the services they provide and the need continues to grow. Now they have their new home with more room and facilities, they will strive to continue to expand the services they offer in conjunction with the needs of the district’s local community. The “Wellbeing Project Fund” was set up to raise funds for the first stage costs of the enhanced Wellbeing Service and some funding

has been received by Sovereign Healthcare and the West Riding Masonic Charities who continue to support BCS in the unique work they do. There is, however, a vision for the future of the Wellbeing Service and BCS will continue to work hard to make this happen. Their aim in the future is to introduce:

• Face-to-face initial meetings for all new clients

• Face-to-face review meetings for all clients

• Integrated one-to-one provision

• Person-focussed individualised support

• Improved access by extending opening hours

• Expansion of provision to incorporate group nutritional advice

The team strives to continue to make this vision a success and is actively seeking volunteer complementary therapists and counsellors to meet the needs of the service. Counselling offers patients and carers an opportunity to speak in confidence to someone about matters that may be worrying or distressing. Often painful feelings can be relieved by telling someone else and knowing that you have been heard and understood. It provides an opportunity to look at concerns and consider different options open to them and it can help manage change in life. Complementary Therapy is non-medical treatment used alongside conventional medicine to enhance symptom control and improve quality of life. So by offering an integrated approach to the Wellbeing of the person, BCS are hugely improving the continued support for the client.

How many of you have ever considered a spa break? Whether it’s for a day, overnight, a weekend or even longer? Some of you may have already taken a

spa break, might even do this on a regular basis and I bet you travel quite a distance to do so. Well I have some fabulous news for you...Titanic Spa in Huddersfield! Yes, that’s correct...Huddersfield, and as it is right on the doorstep I made it my mission to try it out for a day and report back to our readers on my experience. Titanic Spa is tucked away on the edge of the Pennines in a converted mill and is not the easiest place to find, (one important tip is when following satellite navigation - use Low Westwood Lane instead of the postcode), I used the postcode and got horribly lost, having to call them for directions! The whole bottom floor of a converted mill is dedicated to Titanic Spa, with the rest being beautiful apartment conversions, of which the spa owns a number to accommodate their residential guests. I chose to spend a lazy Sunday at Titanic Spa, I had the day to myself and was really ready for some ‘me time’. I arrived at 10am, (although you can arrive much earlier), and on arrival I was greeted by a lovely friendly receptionist who showed me to a seat and offered me a drink while I completed a medical questionnaire. The form completed, I was taken to the ladies changing room, allocated a locker, a luscious robe and slippers, and once changed I was met by the same receptionist who showed me around the facilities, told me what time I was booked in for lunch and my Elemis Facial (my treatment of choice on the day), and I was then left to enjoy my day in my own way. Where to start and what to do first? Did I fancy the 15 metre salt regulated heated infinity pool with bubbling hydrozone, underwater music and poolside relaxation beds? Or was I feeling

energetic enough to partake of the TechnoGym before getting into relaxation mode? Should I do the Heat Experience or the poolside sauna and steam rooms...no chance! My first port of call was the Quiet Zone, a large dimly lit room full of reclining beds, chairs and the largest selection of oversized beanbags I have ever seen. A totally quiet room, the only sounds were of the discreet relaxing background music and the crackle of flames from the hologram log fire. Book in hand I reclined on one of the reading chairs, read half a page and fell asleep! Bliss. I would have gladly paid good money just to spend the day in that recliner, but it was soon time for my Elemis facial so I went to sit in the treatment waiting area to be collected by my therapist. The treatment rooms are stunning,

Titanic Spa in Huddersfield

designed and lit to relaxation perfection and after my therapist had scrutinised my medical questionnaire for any possible contra indications to the treatment I was about to have, my 1 hour 10 minute facial commenced. Each step of the facial was explained to me including the benefits from the products being used, and at the end my skin was literally glowing with health and felt absolutely fantastic. Had to purchase those products, lucky they sold them! I was now pretty hungry and I made my way for lunch in The Bistro, a lovely buffet of hot dishes, salads, home cooked potato wedges, hunks of fresh crusty bread and a large glass of Pinot Grigio complemented it perfectly! I was in no mood for exertion now so I retired with my book back to the Quiet Zone to let my food digest at leisure. After about an hour I started to feel a little guilty that I had not experienced any of the other facilities, so dragged myself to The Titanic Heat Experience where the body is heated and then cooled through a series of steam, sauna and ice rooms, ice showers and an ice plunge pool. You can

also indulge your feet in foot baths, all designed to purify and cleanse the body and I have to say I felt amazing afterwards. All too soon it was time to leave, how I wished I had booked the overnight package! What I did do before leaving was book the ‘September Special 2 for 1 Offer’ for the following Friday as a treat for my mum’s birthday. I can see this is going to be a regular thing and one I can highly recommend to Here & Now readers.

Edwin Pounds is probably the most well known funeral director in the area. Based in Greengates, this true family run business

was established in 1904 when their prime interest was farming, but they were also a coal merchants and carriage proprietors, hiring horse and carriages to local funeral directors. Then as most of the farmland was utilised for the creation of the Thorpe Edge estate, funeral directing became the primary function of the business. Edwin had 11 children (eight sons and three daughters). The sons all worked in the family business and initially each brother had his own limousine - one of which was previously owned by Princess Margaret, one was used by Winston Churchill during his visit to Bradford and another was used in the filming of The Yellow Rolls Royce! In 2004, Edwin Pounds celebrated its centenary, and Charles, the only surviving son of Edwin, still worked at the company at the age of 85. Sadly, Charles passed away in 2005, leaving his daughter, Judith Broome, and his grandson, Simon Broome, to run the company. Judith retired in 2007, leaving

Simon to continue the prestigious family business. Simon has two young sons of his own who he hopes will take a keen interest in the business when they are older, continuing the family firm his grandfather would have been proud of. At the beginning of 2008, Simon had plans drawn up for purpose-built premises. The building work was carried out in two stages and the progress followed by all local residents. Initially, the rear of the building was demolished to create the garage, store room, mortuary and chapel, which can seat up to 40 people. This was followed by phase two which incorporated the entrance reception area, offices, two arrangements rooms and toilet facilities. The improved design and modern facilities offer comforting and informal surroundings, while still providing a professional and high standard of care which their clients expect and for which Edwin Pounds and Sons Ltd is renowned. The build was completed in May and Edwin Pounds is now the only purpose-built independent funeral directors in the area. The legacy lives on.

The New Inn at Calverley was taken over five years ago by Nick Marshall and Steve Armitage, neither of whom at the time had any experience in the

hospitality industry. Nick had a retail background, and, having worked for Asda for 11 years, had a great understanding of customer care and service. He knew how important it was to make sure that a customer’s initial experience should be one to remember for all the right reasons! Steve had worked for many years managing residential homes for the elderly, ensuring a warm and caring environment was provided at all times. This unique mix of backgrounds and experience works perfectly and, as their many regular customers will tell you, you are guaranteed a very warm welcome from Nick, Steve and their excellent team. During the five years they have been at The New Inn, both Steve and Nick have involved themselves in the community by supporting local causes and care homes and, next year, will sponsor Calverley Football team. Through the generosity of their customers, who they now consider to be lifelong friends, they have also raised much needed funds for the Oncology Wing at St. James Hospital, Martin House Children’s Hospice at Wetherby and many other local causes. This has culminated in the ultimate annual event which is an Easter Egg collection, all donated by local residents and companies and distributed to local special schools, nursing homes

and children’s wards. This year over 400 eggs were donated with everyone really backing Steve and Nick’s fundraising efforts. The Garden Room Restaurant was introduced to The New Inn three years ago and has proven to be a great success, serving meals in the evenings from Thursday to Sunday, as well as the usual popular bar meals. The Garden Room is often used for private functions or corporate meetings and overlooks a lovely private beer garden which has been designed to be child friendly and ideal for a relaxing drink with the family on a warm autumn day. Renowned for its traditional, hearty fare, you can choose from meals such as the New Inn Steak and Ale Pie (a secret recipe never to be shared!), or the many a la carte dishes on offer, and their Speciality Evenings such as the ‘Steak and Seafood Evening’ are so popular that unless you book early you will not be able to get a booking! Sunday lunch is a chance to try some more of Steve’s mouth watering home cooked food, with a choice of three traditional Sunday roasts and the usual extensive menu. From Thursday onwards there is something happening every evening at The New Inn in Calverley. The fun begins with Thursday Night Quiz Night which draws a mixed crowd of all ages as it is a great fun night with a free supper half way through, and there are beer vouchers and a jackpot prize to be won each week. Fridays are an evening for relaxing with friends old and new, and Saturday is Live

Music Night, starting at 9pm going on ‘til late! With tribute bands, groups and Mr. Roy G. Hemmings, ex lead singer with the original Drifters (booked to appear again in January), there is always a fantastic atmosphere and lots of fun. In fact people travel far and wide to The New Inn every Saturday, and told us it’s because Nick and Steve are always there, mingling and socialising making sure that everyone has a warm welcome and a fantastic night! The New Inn Calverley Grapevine is a unique facility where customers can share their comments and give feedback on their visits to the pub. You can find it on Facebook and it is well worth a visit as you can also finds out what’s going on and see a gallery of past and recent photographs of events held there. With the festive season just around the corner, bookings are now being taken for Christmas and New Year. For this, to dine in the restaurant or to attend one of the events planned at The New Inn, booking is advisable to avoid disappointment, although Nick and Steve always try to squeeze people in where possible.

Mobarak boutique, in Rawdon, is one of those fabulous yet little known places where, no matter what the occasion, we ladies can

find the perfect outfit, shoes, handbag and even those essential accessories to feel a million dollars and stand out from the crowd, and it will never break the bank! Friends, Lynn Parry and Sonia Sole, have over 40 years experience between them in the fashion industry, working for Harvey Nichols and Amanda Wakley and, most recently, both were managers at Emma Somerset, all in Leeds City Centre. In fact, Lynn was a personal shopper for 20 years with Emma Somerset and knows exactly what will look amazing on each person as an individual, and can make your shopping experience at Mobarak really fantastic in this contemporary, airy boutique. There is even a lounge area to enjoy a glass of wine or a coffee, to take your time and shop in style! Together Sonia and Lynn jumped at the chance to take over Mobarak when

the previous owner moved abroad; a great opportunity for them to run a boutique that offers a unique personal service, and to put the glamour back into shopping. This they certainly do, with amazing clothes by designers such as Charas, hunters and gatherers, Airfield, So Couture, Leslie from Monaco and Kapalua. If beautiful, stylish clothes is what you are looking for then Mobarak is a must. They have ranges for those who like the classics and beautifully tailored lines, to quirky, sexy and funky. With new ranges arriving on a daily basis it’s a great time to seek out Mobarak and experience clothes shopping as it was meant to be. You can be sure that this will be the first of many visits to Mobarak!

Are your wardrobes and drawers straining at the hinges because you have far too many clothes, shoes and handbags?

Need to make room for those new Autumn/Winter fashions that you are planning on buying?

Would you like to clear some space and make some money towards your new purchases in doing so?

Of course you would, and if you are a woman after my own heart the thought of making some money through clearing out your unwanted garments really appeals. Having lost quite a bit of weight last year and managing to keep it off all of this year, I made up my mind that the time had come to clear out everything that no longer fits. The only problem is that they are in really good condition and I have been trying to convince myself to do a car boot sale with them, unsuccessfully!

I really wanted to try and get back some of the hundreds of pounds I have invested in my wardrobe but car boot sales just fill me with dread! Early mornings at the weekend and people climbing in your car before you have even turned your engine off are not my idea of fun. Well I have found the perfect solution and want to share it with you all... Touch of Glamour (formerly MOT’s), at 267 Leeds Road in Shipley, is a newly opened dress agency owned by Janet Moore. Janet recently took over the premises which was renowned for its holistic therapies, great tanning suites and vibrating plate inch loss system, and has changed the therapy rooms into two fabulous boutique suites. It has been such a success that Janet is struggling to keep the rails stocked as her customers using the tanning and inch loss system facilities keep buying the stock as soon as it comes in! So Janet needs all of your unwanted

clothes, footwear and handbags as soon as possible, just asking that each item is clean, in good condition and ready to be sold. A price for each item is agreed and Janet takes 30% of the sale price, saving the remainder for you to collect and spend on your new purchases, which you will most likely find at Touch of Glamour where you will certainly get more for your money and be amazed at the high quality of designs on offer. Janet also has a stunning collection of new handbags and costume jewellery to complete any outfit, and, to make sure you look absolutely stunning over the festive season, you might want to book some tanning and vibrating plate sessions too! Make a date with yourself to sort through your wardrobes and drawers and take everything to Janet at Touch of Glamour, I promise it will be the easiest, most enjoyable and hassle free way to clear that fashion clutter!

OUR Pets are part of the family and as such we all want to do everything we can to keep them safe. You have them checked over regularly and keep them up to date with their vaccinations, but how well would you cope if your pet went missing? No matter how responsible you are or how well behaved your pet is, it is very possible that one day they may go missing. While collars can be slipped, name tags can fall off and tattoos may become illegible over time, microchip identification is permanent so if your pet is lost, a microchip gives you the best chance of being reunited.A microchip is hardly bigger than a grain of rice and having it

implanted is quick and simple. Like a normal injection, it is inserted under the skin at the back of the neck and, once there, it lasts a lifetime. the chip contains a unique code

that identifies the pet and the owner. These details, includ-ing your name, address and contact telephone numbers are held on a central database. Most vets, animal charities and local authorities have microchip

readers. If the unthinkable happens and your pet does go missing, once found and handed in, your pet will be scanned. Your contact details can then be looked up on the database and then it is just

a case of calling you and returning your pet. Do remember that if you move house or change your tele-

phone number it is vital to update the central database as well! Can you imagine how you would feel if your beloved family pet became lost and wasn’t microchipped? For all responsible pet owners, getting your pet microchipped should be one of the first things that you do. Remember – microchipping is as simple as having your pet vaccinated! Contact us today for further details!

A tiny microchip is easily injected under the skin.

A special scanner is used to “read” the unique I.D code. This code speedily identifies your pet.

JUst as having your pet microchipped can be invaluable if your pet goes missing, so pet insurance can be a real lifesaver for the unexpected vet bill! Recent advances in veterinary medicine have meant that treatments that were unimaginable just a few years ago are now a reality. Diagnostic

procedures such as MRI scans are increasingly routine, and surgi-cal procedures such as cataract removals and hip replacements

are commonplace. On a daily basis we see the heart wrenching deci-

sions some of our clients face regarding the treatment of their pets, but with appropriate

pet insurance, we can hopefully ensure that any treatment decisions are made on the basis of need rather than cost.

Don’t take the risk – get your pet insured today!

It’s official: chips are good for pets!Firework fright!Bonfire night can be a scary time for pets and it is important to prepare for this stress-ful time. Here are some tips for pets that find the whole experience of fireworks rather overwhelming:• Make sure that dogs and cats are indoors and any pets that live outside (e.g. rabbits) are covered.Keep the windows and cur-tains in the room where your dog is closed, and provide a comfy bed with lots of blankets to hide under. We also recom-mend installing a DAP diffuser in this room as a source of additional comfort. DAP (short for’ dog appeasing pherom-one) decreases stress levels in dogs. It comes as a diffuser that should be plugged in two weeks before the event to take maximum effect. Music can also be played to mask the sound of fireworks, or leav-ing the television on can also help. But no sound tracks that includes loud noises or bangs.• Your reaction to your pet’s fearful behaviour is important. Reassurance encourages your pet to continue displaying a behaviour – whether it is sitting nicely or displaying fear. so reward your pet’s calm behav-iour with cuddles and treats. However if your pet is fearful, stay relaxed and act as a good ‘role model’ and carry on as if nothing is happening.Other treatments are also available, for further advice on all methods available to help your pet with bonfire night, please speak to one of our practice staff who will be very happy to help.

Cakecraft: Celebrating 21 Years Thanks to Loyal Customers

Carole Rayner has run her business, Cakecraft, from Enterprise 5 in Morrisons shopping mall in Idle, Bradford, for 21 years and puts her

success down to her wonderfully loyal customers, who constantly recommend her services and come back time and time again. However, Carole is extremely modest

as when you pay her a visit, you immediately realise that the cakes she creates are individual, imaginative and very special! This, coupled with her one to one personal service and passion to create something unique, is the reason why Cakecraft has so many loyal customers, and why it has been able to outlast many of its competitors. In her own words: “There are thousands

of design ideas that I can create to reflect each individual’s personality and event, whether it is a wedding, a milestone birthday, baby shower, christening or celebration of any kind, and I love being able to be part of an occasion by providing a unique, well made, delicious cake. The only limitation is imagination and budget!” Many is the time that Carole has had to come to the rescue of someone who has ordered a cake through the internet or a large, impersonal catering company. Sometimes a cake has arrived damaged, the wrong colour or design and some customers have even been told that their cake will not arrive in time for their celebration and any of these can have a devastating effect and ruin any occasion. Carole’s passion and skills always save the day! Cakecraft’s dependable, reliable and professional service is evident in the many thank you cards and testimonials displayed in her shop. The fact that you can see her hard at work creating each dream cake whenever you pay her a visit, shows just how popular her services are. Plus the smell of cakes baking just makes your mouth water! It pays to use independent local businesses first time, every time!

Reader OfferTo celebrate Cakecraft’s 21 years at Enterprise 5, Carole is giving something back to each customer who orders their wedding cake for 2010 and is giving a £20 High Street Voucher. This is the question we asked ourselves when we paid Zouk’s a visit. We do lots of restaurant reviews and quite a lot of Asian restaurant reviews at that,

but Zouk’s was something a bit different, a bit special and very exciting! Zouk Tea Bar and Grill is an award-winning Halal Indian restaurant, located at the top of Leeds Road in Bradford and is run by Amjad Bashir, better known as Peter to his customers, and his sons Mudassar and Tayub, who have grown up sharing their father’s passion for good food. Together they have created a new generation restaurant, fusing authentic Lahore cuisine with healthy eating in a stylish, contemporary setting. Zouk is open for breakfast and stays open until late into the night, so you can drop in for breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper or just a drink or tasty dessert. Parking is relatively easy as there are many side streets with off road parking and the sight of Zouk’s at night is really inviting, with its luminous exterior lighting and the restaurant and open kitchen clearly visible through the huge plate glass windows. Chefs wave and offer a friendly hello before you have even entered. Once inside the greeting is immediate and as if we were old friends, and watching Tayub and his young team in action was fascinating, they worked the tables like old pro’s and had fun and banter with everyone. They are also incredibly knowledgeable about their extensive menu and happy to recommend and explain any dish. To start with I chose Chicken Imlee, chicken pieces marinated in selaki herbs and

spices, barbecued to perfection and served with a delicious tamarind and plum sauce (£3.50). My husband Dave chose Chicken Liver, marinated with crushed chillies, cumin and lemon juice, cooked on a Tawa Asian griddle (£3.50). Of course, we tried each other’s and couldn’t decide which one we liked best, they are both completely different chicken dishes and both completely delicious, and the plates hardly needed washing! For my main course I just had to go for the Lamb Nahari, tender pieces of lamb cooked slowly in its own juices to create a full flavour with selected herbs and spices enhanced by a thick, spicy sauce (£8.95). This sounded simply delicious and my goodness it was! Dave was far more adventurous and decided to try one of the many ‘unusual’ choices, Paya (sheep’s trotters), traditionally a breakfast dish, cooked slowly over many hours until the meat is so tender that it falls from the bone, the sauce is a rich, spicy broth which was particularly delicious (£6.95). We shared a garlic naan (£2.45), and a portion of vegetable rice (£2.45), and this was plenty. After a rest, during which we had a good old chat with Tayub about the new Zouk Restaurant in Manchester that the family recently opened, and the many different themed and celebration events they host, we decided to share one of the fabulous puddings on

offer. This was also a surprise as they have a resident French pastry chef who each day makes a selection of the most delicious desserts such as Mango or Strawberry Cheesecake, Hot Chocolate Roulade, Creme Brulee and a selection of tarts, we chose a huge strawberry fruit tart...should have got one each as we were fighting over the last few spoonfuls! A couple of glasses of wine and 2 bottles of Cobra beer went well with the meal and we had such a good evening we were still sat there chatting at 10.30pm even though our table was booked for 7.30pm! It was a good buzzing, vibrant atmosphere and we didn’t want to leave, but you can be sure that we will be regular visitors to Zouk Tea Bar and Grill from now on. Hope to see you there!

2 in 1/ Car Key / Hanoi Burglary

The above terms all mean the same thing: a house has been broken into, property stolen (including cay keys) and the homeowner’s car

then stolen. Nationally 6% of all burglaries at dwellings involved the taking of a car, however, locally this figure is 11%. It is predicted that this type of crime will continue to rise as most modern cars have better security systems and it is very difficult to steal the car without a key. The majority of these burglaries occur overnight and this means that there is a higher likelihood of the house being occupied and, therefore, greater risk of confrontation. The most frequently highlighted motivations for car key burglary are for the use of the vehicle as transportation away from the scene, and the theft of the vehicle for financial gain. Offenders involved in car key burglaries use a variety of M.Os (Modus Operandi) to gain access to your home. They include:-

• Entry through insecure doors/windows. Ensure all windows/doors are secure whilst you are in bed. This sounds very simple advice yet people do forget to lock up. Consider fitting door chimes and bolts to internal doors. • Hook and cane method which involves a pole or rod, often with a magnet or hook attached to the end. This is pushed through the letterbox, or a cat flap, in order to reach the keys. Keep all keys out of sight of doors and windows.

• Attacks on UPVC double glazing locking systems. With regard to windows, sash jammers and vibration alarms should be fitted. For UPVC double glazed doors, snap-safe anti-bump locks can be fitted. Also fit sash jammers to doors.

If you want a plastering job done correctly, in fact, to an award-winning standard, then you can rely on father and son partnership, Lawrence and Lewis Minnock of Hillcourt

Plasterers to do just that. Hillcourt Plasterers are a true local family run business where the highest of standards in quality of workmanship and customer care are probably impossible to equal, let alone beat! This may seem like a brave statement, but not when you consider the fact that Lawrence has over 35 years plastering experience working on all kinds of renovation and repair projects, gaining the highest recognition and respect from his many repeat customers, and Lewis his son, beat more than 200 other contenders from around the UK to win the country’s top construction industry award at SkillBuild 2008, held on his home patch at Leeds College of Building, allowing Hillcourt Platerers the rare use of the British Gypsum logo. Lewis told Here & Now: “I’m over the moon to have won this prestigious award. To be voted the best plasterer in the country is a dream come true. “I currently work with my dad who has given me the unbelievable support and the opportunity to gain invaluable experience working in his plastering firm. I wouldn’t have been capable of winning this award without him.” Lewis has been working with his father Lawrence since he left school, and they have a brilliant working partnership as they are both completely passionate about completing every project to the highest standard - so much so that they have been accepted to become an Associated Member of the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers (APC). You can tell that this is a prestigious organisation to be accepted into as they have kept the historic spelling of plasterers(plaisterers) in the title. Lawrence told us: “We have a high percentage of repeat customers and also referrals from our customers telling their family and friends about us and the high quality of our workmanship, which is very flattering. Unfortunately, we also get called to jobs

“Many thanks to Hillcourt Plasterers for the work you did at my property. I’ll be back in touch when my next rooms need doing. The work itself is of a very high standard and completed in good time with particular care taken to protect the house from mess - they seemed to want to leave the house cleaner than they found it!”

Simon of Leeds.

“We contacted Hillcourt Plasterers upon recommendation from a family member after we had damage from a burst pipe over the Christmas period. Lawrence was only too happy to call round at short notice even at that time of the year. His quote was very reasonable and supplied the next day in writing. The completed work was second to none and we have instructed him to complete further plastering work for us and we have no reservations in recommending Hillcourt Plasterers to any family, friend or colleague looking for a reliable, honest and friendly craftsman.”

Mr and Mrs Herschy of Horsforth.

“I would like to thanks Lawrence and Lewis for the superb plastering work they did for me. I had hoped there would not be too much mess and was pleasantly surprised to find they had mopped up in the bedroom and downstairs hall – a very unusual trait in these times! I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone in need of a plasterer.”

S. Walker of Cleckheaton.

where people have had plastering jobs done by workmen who do not have the necessary experience and qualifications and in such cases a customer has the extra expense of having substandard workmanship put right. “I would urge anyone considering having plastering work done to ask to see any qualifications, previous customer testimonials and even view work that the plasterer has carried out in their area to make sure that they are getting a reliable, capable specialist in the first place.

Testimonials“It may seem a little more expensive to have a professional do the work, but it costs so much more when you don’t use a professional!”Wise words indeed and here’s what some of their customers have to say:

Whether you want to eat in or get a takeaway, for a true Balti dining experience, it has to be the Balti House in Baildon! This

is a real treat for lovers of traditional Punjabi cooking but it’s not all about the food – if you choose to eat in, it’s about the whole experience and Balti House provides a really unique dining experience. Set in a 17th century cottage on Browgate, the main road through Baildon, with parking available on the road or directly opposite in a large car park, this is a really easy restaurant to find. The quaint frontage to The Balti House has recently been re-decorated and looks even more inviting. However, if you still haven’t been there, you will be completely charmed by the welcome and the period features that await you inside. There are beautiful exposed beams and creaking floorboards. This restaurant has a deceptively large upper floor where there’s room for any

number of people to dine together, while downstairs there is a small bar with a more intimate dining area, ideal for a group who want to be a little more private. Being a traditional Balti restaurant, there is no alcohol for sale but diners are welcome to bring their own, which many do, so don’t be caught out if you like an alcoholic beverage with your meal. It may seem strange to see people coming in carrying a bottle of wine or a carrier bag of beer but what a great idea; you get to drink exactly what you want and not have to pay restaurant prices or corkage. Another reason why this restaurant is so popular! Soft drinks are available. Balti food is very colourful, aromatic and flavoursome cooked and served in traditional heavy cast iron woks. The beauty of this is that all flavours are captured and you don’t lose any of the taste on the transfer to plates. Ideally, the food should be eaten without cutlery, scooped up with Naan or Chapatti bread, but cutlery is on hand if you prefer.

The menus here are extensive, so take a while to study all that is on offer. If you are eating in, then the pace is laid back and relaxed with attention to detail and customer service, you never feel rushed and many make a full evening of their experience, taking time to really enjoy the food and the company they are with. Takeaways are also very popular at The Balti House and they deliver to all surrounding areas, not only to homes in Baildon. Again the menu is extensive so it’s a good idea to make sure you have a menu to hand. If there are a few of you ordering it’s also advisable to order a selection of dishes so that you can all try each dish and find your real favourites for next time. With the festive season looming you might also want to consider The Balti House for your parties and celebrations, as Christmas bookings are now being taken. Don’t wait until Christmas to try this great restaurant though, it’s too good to wait so long and such good value we are sure it will become one of your regular favourites!

Northcliffe motors hosted its very first Classic Car Show in association with the Saltaire Festival and are very pleased to say it was an all round success and one that they will most likely run each year. With a variety of classic cars showing over the weekend the free event went down well. People were invited to look around the cars and enjoy free refreshments, giving a friendly and welcoming atmosphere to the garage. The immaculate, well looked after and loved cars from years gone by were exciting for

all ages and included old vehicles made in Bradford. They commented, “We would like to thank everyone who signed up to our Loyalty Scheme and took part in the free prize draw to win the Luxury Bettys Tea Hampers. The Loyalty Scheme entitles you to discount on every visit and Loyalty members are selected at random for free prize giveaways throughout the year. “We also gave out £15 off discount vouchers, an offer which we also extend to all Here & Now readers.” For lots of people it’s hard to imagine life without a car, so let Northcliffe Motors take the stress out of motoring. Once again the season is upon us and anyone who held up a ‘Save Our Stuart’ card at the last game of last season may have been asking

themselves ‘why?’ after the first four games of the new season. Three defeats and a 0-0 draw, a run of games in which we scored absolutely no goals what so ever and saw ten goals rattled in by the opposition. However, since those first few games, the fortunes of The Bantams have turned and no one travelling to the fifth game of the campaign could ever have forecast the result at Cheltenham. We conceded yet another four goals but somehow managed to win an incredible game where it seemed every time we scored the opposition equalised immediately. Most of us couldn’t believe the game we had watched and everyone returned to the coach probably as shattered as the team. That was the game that kick started our season, as we have remained unbeaten since then. In truth the start to the season couldn’t have been harder and two journeys to the City of Nottingham in four days didn’t help matters. The moneybags of the 4th division (Coca Cola League 2 to give it it’s posh name) Notts County tore us apart 5-0 on a wave of excitement and euphoria after the appointment of Sven Goran Erikson as director of football there. A filthy rich backer is pouring money into the club at an alarming rate and players head and shoulders above our league standard are being signed up. Then Championship club Forest blitzed us with three goals in a 45 minute spell after half time the following game. Between these games and the Lincoln

game we managed to force a draw but hardly the best start to a campaign, however stalwarts of the club will tell you we had a worse start to the season in the 98/99 season when of course we were promoted. So here’s hoping! Managerial casualties in our division so far to date are Peter Jackson and Stuart Gray at Lincoln and Northampton, and to think everyone in football was tipping our Stuart to be the first for the chop. The open four games apart have shown Stuart McCall putting together a young energetic raw side which is reminiscent of the Trevor Cherry era in the 1980’s. Let’s hope this present team can emulate that of 84/85

with a promotion in May. Youngsters from none league football such as Steve Williams, Scott Neilson, James (he worked in the Coop) Hanson, Jamie O’Brien are all showing the desire we have seemingly missed in the last few seasons from the so called seasoned professionals. These players coupled with the experienced seasoned professionals in the side seem to have ‘hit it off’. The likes of Mickey Boulding and Peter Thorne can only sit out the games whilst the’young ‘uns’ show the passion and desire us the fans require. After the game at Barnet the players and fans applauded each other in a show of unity the likes of which I’ve never seen before.

We want them to succeed and they what to do it for themselves and us the fans. This is very evident and something I’ve not seen in many seasons. So at the time of writing this article we have taken points from all but one away game with credible wins at Cheltenham and Shrewsbury and a hard fought draw at the quaint ground of Underhill, Barnet. It’s a dump really and one of the reasons we must climb out of this league. Life on the road in the 4th division of English football certainly isn’t easy and it’s a big reality check after the days of visits to Anfield, Old Trafford etc that seem light

years away now. Still, as one of our old chairmen use to say it’s ‘onwards and upwards’ and the belief spreading through Valley Parade is beginning to grow every game. Let’s hope his saying comes true again but without the fall from grace he contributed to. The worst kept secret of all time at VP finally happened with Joe Colbeck transferring to near by Oldham Athletic, he played over 100 times for City and always put in the effort we as fans required. Let’s wish Joe all the best in his career, a move most City fans think is right for both us and Joe. So with just eight league games gone and a progression into the next round of a cup we as happy bantams look forward with renewed optimism to the rest of the season.

THE City of Leeds region welcomed a delegation from the FA’s England World Cup 2018 committee in early September, as the city continues its

bid to become a host for the competition. Leeds United and Scotland legends Peter Lorimer and Eddie Gray were on hand to welcome the delegation, along with representatives from the City Council and partners. Representatives from England 2018 visited Leeds to see for themselves why it should be a host city for the games. After a presentation at Leeds City Museum about Leeds as a potential host city, they split into three groups to visit venues specific training sites, FIFA fan fest (festival) sites and City Centre hotels, accompanied by relevant council officers and representatives of Leeds. Shaun Harvey, chief executive of Leeds United said: “We’ve been working hard over the past few months and we are

looking forward to welcoming the England 2018 delegation. There will be plenty going on around the city on Monday and we hope as many people as possible will show their support for our bid.” Councillor Richard Brett, leader of Leeds City Council said: “The Leeds City Region is doing everything possible to ensure Leeds becomes a host city for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The prospect of hosting World Cup matches is an exciting one. It will bring huge benefits to the city and surrounding area and ensure that all that is great about Leeds and Yorkshire is shown to audiences around the world. “I am confident that the England 2018 delegation will be impressed during their visit and will return to London convinced that Leeds would make a great host city.” To vote for Leeds to be one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup visit www.backthebidleeds.com.

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson hailed his record-breaking players after a terrific start to the new season. The 2-0 win against Stockport County at

the start of September saw the class of 2009 etch their name into the Leeds United history books. The 2-0 success was United’s 14th straight league win on home soil - bettering the 13 set by Don Revie’s side in 1969 - and it was the eighth straight victory to the start the season in all competitions, bettering the seven straight wins at the start of the 1973 season. “The players can be proud of themselves,” he said. “To break the records they have is terrific, and they deserve full credit for what they have done. There’s been some great players and managers at this club and to put their names in the record books is something they should all be very proud of. This club is steeped in history and tradition and they have created a record which we hope we expand upon. “In terms of our season, we haven’t achieved anything and no one here thinks we have, but to win eight straight games to start the season - six of them in the league - and to win 14 on the bounce at home in the league is a fantastic achievement for everyone concerned.”

United manager Simon Grayson was quick to hail his Elland Road heroes after they pushed Liverpool all the way in the Carling Cup.

The Premier League side stole a 1-0 victory in front of over 38,000 at Elland Road, courtesy of a David N’Gog goal, but United made Liverpool sweat all the way with a terrific performance. “I’m immensely proud of what we’ve done,” said the manager. “I was proud of the way we played, the way we created chances, and the problems we caused them. “It was a strong Liverpool team and I’m delighted with where we got to. Decisions didn’t go for us at times, but we can’t be disappointed with what we did. The lads did nothing differently to how they have approached the other games. We passed the ball well, matched them physically, and defended when we had to. “Rob Snodgrass had their left back on toast at times, with the way he twisted and turned. “We have a work ethic where we work hard for each other. They stood up to be counted and we can be immensely proud. I hope people who saw them for the first time will come back.”

Shock was probably the best word to describe the Annual Awards Dinner at the Queens Hotel in Leeds as all the winners expressed their surprise at

being picked top of the class. The black tie event, which is now in twelfth year, was once again kindly sponsored by Gala Casinos and Network Securities and saw nearly 350 guests, including the players and coaches and their wives, assembled for a night of celebrations. The night was hosted by Sky Sports’ Eddie Hemmings with the League Leaders Shield proudly on display on stage. The first award of the night went to Jack Carvill as the Gillette Academy Player of the Year. Jack was delighted to pick up the award, which his coach Chris Plume said was for recognition of his outstanding development this season. Carvill has played at second row, loose forward, centre and stand off this season but when asked which was his favoured position he replied: “I don’t mind where I am playing, I’m just proud to play for Leeds and will do my best whatever job I am asked to do.”

The second award of the night was the Chris Sanderson Memorial trophy for the Reserve Academy Player of the Year. This was a hard fought contest but centre Michael Ratu got the nod from coach Willie Poching and his coaching team. The next award was tinged with sadness with the winner, Danny McGuire, unable to attend the dinner after the death of his grandfather. McGuire was named the winner of the Cravendale Commitment to the Community Award for his efforts in his local community above and beyond the call of duty. Willie Poching accepted the award on his behalf from the Leeds Rugby Foundation’s General Manager Chris Rostron and Louise Allen from sponsors Arla Foods. One of the funniest parts of the night was next up as Rhinos star Jamie Jones-Buchanan presented the Clubman of the Year

award in a manner that only Jamie could do. He confessed that he had been troubled about how he could best do the award justice and had confided in team mate Kevin Sinfield. To come up with the best way to present the award, the pair decided to give the audience clues to reveal the name of the wig. First, he produced a wig from a bag of props, then a pair of glasses with a rubber nose attached before finally stuffing a cushion up his top. The mystery recipient was none other than the Rhinos conditioner Jason Davidson who picked up the award as recognition for his outstanding efforts with the squad. Speaking after the presentation Davidson said, “I am delighted to win the award. When Jonesy was speaking I was thinking to myself, ‘surely he is going to say something nice’ but he just kept taking the Mickey. What he doesn’t realise though is that I will have my revenge with the fitness sessions I have got planned for him in the coming months!” The next part of the evening was almost entirely dominated by one man, Rhinos and England try scoring extraordinaire Ryan Hall. Hall was named the Yorkshire Evening Post Shooting Star as the best player under 24 in the Rhinos ranks. He follows in the footsteps of current teammates Luke Burgess, Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow in picking up the award. He was presented with a framed special edition of the Yorkshire Evening Post by the paper’s Rugby League correspondent Pete Smith and competition winner Lynn Saynor. Hall was also the winner of the Leeds Building Society Try of the Season for his impressive effort against Catalans at Murrayfield, which polled 36% of the vote from the fans on www.therhinos.co.uk The night then moved on to the main business of the evening with the Player of the

Year awards. Kylie Leuluai came in third place before it was that man again, Ryan Hall, who was named runner up. Finally, the top prize of the night went to Rhinos skipper Kevin Sinfield, who followed up his triumphs in 2002 and 2005 in the same awards with his third victory.
