HERCULES WIMBLEDON AC NEWS & RESULTS, w/c November 8, 2015
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
From Henry V by William Shakespeare
Were you there for the momentous Surrey League victory on Wimbledon Common last
Saturday either as a competitor of a spectator?
If not it was a pity really as you may have missed a truly red letter day in the annals of
Hercules Wimbledon.
Not only was it the occasion of the club’s first Division One league team victory since 1978 -
before all of the scoring members were born - in arguably the strongest league in the country,
but there was also a record number of 45 HW members in action in the senior race.
Tom Pollak wrote to say: The last time Hercules Wimbledon won a Surrey League Division
One team race was on October 21st 1978 on Wimbledon Common.
The team included Bob Harrison (2nd), Bob Holt (4th), Rob Allison (10th), Mike Fuller
(15th), Dave Clarke (16th), Dave Beaver (17th), Chris Moulton (22nd), Dave Beard (24th)
and Stu Graham (30th). It won with 174 points from AFD (251), Walton (301), Epsom & E
(325), Herne Hill (385), SLH (485) and Belgrave (564).
A Jonny, Fred and Ben who set the ball rolling as the first three HW home
Above are just three of the many action shots captured by Guy Gibbons which have all been
posted on the club website http://www.herculeswimbledonac.org.uk/Cross-Country.html

A MEMORY OF WHEN THE CLUB ALSO PROVED LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
This year marks the 50th anniversary of H/W's first, and to date only, Surrey League triumph.
Spectacular and dramatic in equal measure, Hercules [as they were then] suffered three
stinging defeats to Belgrave in the season, but a stellar result in the third fixture at Addington
meant Belgrave went into the last match needing to take out a gargantuan 155 points out of
their comrades and Lauriston Cottage training partners. And they bally well almost did it!
This is the final outcome.
1 Hercules AC (243, 295, 147, 261) 946 points
2 Belgrave H (225, 280, 337, 120) 962 points
An amusing postscript is that the officials were so convinced at race's end that Belgrave had
won, they promptly handed them the trophy; before some bright spark at Hercules piped up:
"care to check that?"
THE FUTURE OF HW AFTER THEIR EFFORTS IN THE YOUNGSTER’S RACE
Good to see so many youngsters out today with the U15/U17 team led home by Zac Purnell
finishing a respectable fourth.
The ladies travelled to Esher to compete in abysmal conditions over a testing course to
improve on their opening league fixture by finishing 10th
team having been led home by
Claire Grima in a magnificent third place.
In the U17 race, Isabelle Eliis had a great run in also finishing third.

This Saturday, November 14 sees the club contesting the London Championships at
Parliament Hill with the women (6km) starting at 1:15 followed by the men (10km) at 2pm.
Please note that this a pre-entry race so no just turning up on the day if you haven’t indicated
your wish to compete.
On the same day but in faraway Dublin, Peter Giles will be representing England in the M70
Inter-Country International.
RETURN OF PARENT’S MEETINGS HELD BY RICHARD WESTON
From Sunday 1st November and on the first Sunday of each month in December (6
th) and
February (7th
) I shall be holding a parents’ meeting for 7Upsandovers in the club house
during coaching, lasting around 45 minutes from 10.00am. I discussed this with Pat and she
is sure it will take some of the pressure off the person on the desk as well as providing the
parents who have little or no knowledge of our sport or their club with some insight. The
talks will explain what the club is all about, the rationale behind the coaching we give to the
7Upsandovers and how we see the youngsters progressing as they get older. Along the way
we shall cover funding, volunteering, stadium maintenance and suchlike.
Note: the format of the above meeting will follow the route of the Tuesday evening meetings
previously held by Richard. Parents of the older young athletes who train on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings would be most welcome to attend.
***FINAL CALL FOR SOUTH OF THAMES XC*** Anyone wishing to take part in the South of Thames five mile race at Polesdon Lacey on Saturday 21st November should contact [email protected] (men) or [email protected] (women) by Wednesday 11th November. This is a race for suitable for U20, senior and veteran men and women starting at 2pm on a new course not used before.

THE AMAZING JOHN KRAUSE – A SPECIAL K
John Krause heads toward his final strides on a day he ran the parkrun on Wimbledon
Common before cycling to Kingston to compete in the Thames Meander Marathon over the
traditional 26.2 miles and then returning to the Common to complete the 2XU Surrey Cross
Country League race.
John still found the energy to later remove himself to the Rose & Crown and celebrate the
HW team victory with his club colleagues!
BACK TO BASICS – AN OLD SCHOOL INTER-CLUB RACE
The 2015 Hercules Wimbledon Club Cross Country Race will be taking place on Wimbledon
Common on Saturday 5th
December. The race will start at 11 o’clock to avoid clashes with
other races taking place on the Common.
The race will incorporate the club cross country championship. All ages, both male and
female, will start together with juniors (U13, U15, U17) running one lap of two and a half
miles, whilst seniors and veterans complete a second lap to take them up to five miles. The
course is the traditional route, starting and finishing by the Thatched Cottage.
This year some other clubs from the East Surrey area have been invited to take part which
promises to boost numbers, whilst retaining the friendly atmosphere which makes this race
suitable for all, regardless of experience or ability.
This is Rob and Eileen’s first experience of hosting a home cross country race following
them taking on the role of Cross Country Secretary from Pete Mulholland so please give
them your support! This could either be by taking part in the race itself, or volunteering your
services to be a marshall, help mark out the course or being a timekeeper. If you would like to
help please email [email protected] or [email protected]

AND CHARLES MAKES ELEVEN
Excellent news last week when it was announced that 10 parkruners on Wimbledon Common
the previous week were said to have worn their HW vest which was reported as a record!
Well, you can now make that 11 as untoward the vest worn by Charles Lawrie was a HW
version and the photo below proves it!
In fact this was Charles 365th
parkrun and he admitted that this was the first time he had worn
his HW vest!

CAN THE HW ROWERS RETAIN THE FRANKEISS TROPHY?
The revival of this event – a boat race in skiffs for running clubs - took place some three
years ago since when HW have remained unbeaten and with the next version to be held on
Sunday December 6, a hat trick of wins is on the cards.
To give a potted history of the event, take a look at this You Tube link
