SENTENCE 1

The Introduction This sentence should introduce your reader to

the overall idea of the paragraph. You could also look at it as a place to put a thesis statement. Example: Throughout the novel The Book Thief, Max

uses reading and writing as two different ways to build a relationship with Liesel.

TIPS NEVER SAY “In this paragraph I’m going to…” You should never use I statements in argument writing

SENTENCE 2

Claim 1 In this sentence you are going to state the first

claim you are making in your paragraph. Example: Reading is how Max’s relationship with

Liesel begins.

TIPS Your claim needs to be an idea you can support with

specific examples from the text.

SENTENCE 3

Example 1 This is a sentence where you should use specific

support from the text to support your claim. This can be through you describing something from the text, or to make your argument even stronger, a quote.

Example: After realizing that the basement was too cold to practice reading in, and more importantly too cold to sleep in, Max, Liesel, and Papa fell into a routine of reading together in the living room.

SENTENCE 4

Support 1 This sentence should be used for you to explain

your specific example and how it relates to your claim.

Example: The two are moved to becoming closer than being two people who share a room to read in when Papa points out that they have many things in common, including their shared love for reading.

Tips This is a place for you to explain quotes because

quotes can never stand on their own. They must be explained.

SENTENCE 5-7 Repeat the process

SENTENCE 8

Closing This is the sentence you should use to wrap up

your paragraph. Example: Without their shared love for reading,

and the way that Max used writing, the relationship between these two characters could have been completely different.
