Self-examination: Set aside time to think in depth about your life, about your actions and your inaction. Go beyond the superficial. Get past routine. Love not static or stale, but at work, flowing, growing, fos- tering love for others and then in others. The discipline of Lent is for the disciples of Jesus Christ, for strengthening and deepening faith.

Prayer...

Heavenly Father,

We pray that you help us to understand

“Who Christ is for us today”. We ask you to reveal Christ in the “others” that we encounter

every day. Bless us with a recognition of the political structures that

push minoritized people to the margins and crush them against

walls of insignificance. Remind us of your words in Acts

17, that You have created all races of humanity from one

blood of all people that dwell on the Earth.

And most importantly Lord, encourage us to be “good

people” – not to be defined by our weekly Sunday morning

communities, that often draw the boundaries of our social

responsibilities quite narrowly – but by the broadness of a

vision to serve the Christ we meet in social encounters with

real humans every day. Teach us, hear our prayers, and enable us for service wherever

you might take us. To your praise and glory, Amen.

DISCIPLINES OF LENT

Ash Wednesday is February 14th. It begins the season of Lent, 40 days set aside for reflection on sin in our lives. The gospel acclamation for Lent

Ash Wednesday February 14th

We will have a Chicken Dumpling Soup and Bread Supper beginning at 5:30 p.m.,

serving until 6:30 p.m.

A free-will offering will be taken to help defer the cost of the meal. Please bring a salad or a dessert to share.

Please look for the sign-up sheet in the Information Area. We also need people to help set up and clean up

afterwards. So, please sign up!

Ash Wednesday is on February 14th

We will have a service with imposition of ashes at 7:00 p.m.

On Ash Wednesday, as Lent begins, worshipers’ foreheads are often

marked with ashes in the sign of the cross. The ashes traditionally come

from burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. In Old

Testament days, ashes were a sign of mourning and repentance. Today, some worshipers wipe off the ashes before

leaving church, to symbolize being cleansed from sin by Jesus’ death; others wear the ashes the rest of the day, carrying

the cross of Christ into the world. The speaking of Genesis 3:19 often accompanies the

placement of ashes: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Again this Lent we embark on a Lenten Series with our ecumenical neighbors. The series theme this year is I AM statements from the gospel of John. Each week the host church will have a part in this series. The series here at Redeemer and our neighboring churches:

February 21st

First United Methodist “I am the Bread of Life”, John 6:35-40

February 28th

St. Kilian Catholic Church “I am the Light of the World”, John 8:12-20

March 7th

Redeemer Lutheran Church “I am the Door”, John 10:1-10

March 14th

St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church “I am the Good Shepherd”, John 11:17-27

March 21st

St. Mary’s of the Hill “I am the Resurrection”, John 11:17-27

All service times are at 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments follow each Wednesday service. Each congregation hosts a week at their location. The series will be meaningful for worshippers of all ages. As is tradition, we will be tasking a special offering for the Hartford Food Pantry each week. Both monetary and food donations accepted.

Devotions for Lent Outreach for Hope is a ministry of our Greater Milwaukee

Synod which supports Word and Sacrament ministry in churches

in low-income areas of our synod. Each year they provide Lenten

devotions; this year the theme is “Hope for Our Times.” One

devotion for each day of Lent, beginning with Ash Wednesday,

February 14th. Authors include Bishop Paul Erickson, other synod

staff, Tim Larson, OFH executive director, and members from

OFH supported congregations.

Two ways to receive “Hope for Our Times” – through the

OFH web site, click on ‘resources’, then click the box for Lenten

Devotions and it will come to you daily via email, OR pick up a

print copy at Redeemer.

Scott presented council with the 4th quarter

interest proceeds from the Foundation. The

total was $5923 with an additional $2500 to

cover the cost of the scholarships given out

in 2017. Future scholarships will be taken

directly out of the interest proceeds. The

tithing of this gift was tabled until February.

The hinges on the doors to the Gathering

Room need a bit of work.

We will switch payroll companies around

March of 2018 and save approximately

$1000.

Mark your calendar for a SPECIAL TOWN HALL MEETING

Sunday, February 11th immediately following the

10:30 a.m. service. We will be discussing the Boy’s & Girl’s Club and the House.

Your input is important. Please join us!

Operation’s Team (Finance and Building & Property)

The Finance Team side of Operations was happy with the attendance and conversation at the Ministry Team Plan Meeting. It shows that we have a good base of members interested in Redeemer's financial well being. One area that was discussed a lot was our Fall Pledge Drive and the few responses (40) received. The Finance Team has been discussing having several relaxed meetings, after Sunday services to discuss Redeemer's finances, during the year. A show of hands said they would like to see that happen so the Team will look into this in the near future.

Seeds of Ministry Nuggets

February 4 The healing of Peter’s mother in law is the first resurrection story in the gospel. Having been “raised,” she “serves” them. Serving epitomizes Jesus’ own ministry: “For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”. She is an icon of resurrection and a paradigm of Christian ministry. Should we be less? February 11 The story of the Transfiguration has always intrigued and amazed me. As the story unfolds on the mountain Peter and the others were terrified and tongue-tied. As a cloud appears they hear, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!", and then - nothing. Where do we go from there? It is one thing to listen but just to hear is not sufficient. To obey him is something else. We must do as he says when he says “Follow me.” February 18 As we begin Lent we often think of it as six weeks of mourning and self-deprivation. Yet “Repentance” is not feeling miserable over our sins or regretting that we haven’t been more religious. To repent is to turn our minds God-ward: a 180-degree swing-around from kingdoms of our own fabrication toward God’s rectifying power. God’s power is propelled by mercy. That is good news: the best anyone could hope to hear. Lent is the season to think about that. February 25 Paul's letter to the Romans shows that God has been in the business all along of creating good out of nothing, and of bringing life to where there is only barrenness and death. The hope Romans gives Christians ultimately lies not in Abraham’s faith, but in God’s character and faithfulness. As we reflect during Lent on the brokenness in our own lives, our families, and in the world, we can find hope knowing that God works where we least expect it. We can take God at God’s Word, trusting the promises made in Scripture and in God’s Son, Jesus Christ.

Service Team Notes

You may have noticed a few changes in the Narthex area this month. We are continuing to improve how we communicate with all of you. There are new Information areas. You will notice an area to post pictures of what we are doing here at Redeemer an in the community. Please post any pictures you have of the HOLY SPIRIT at work through us at Redeemer. Snap a picture, take a selfie, get out your camera. Then send your photos to the church email or text it to me or another council member with a brief description. We will print the photo and put it on the Holy Spirit Board by the coat hanging area. I would like to see the board full of all the good we do. The new Information Board with the Core Values on it is for posting information about what we are doing at Redeemer. Sign-ups can go on the table in front of the board. The Monthly Special Giving and any other Special Collections has a new information board also. Look for it right by the usher’s room. It will have information about each month’s Special Giving. Also change collections, or other collections like the Confirmation Service Project. The last board to go will be by the coffee area. This will be a Community Resources Area. It will also have a small table in front of it. This will be the spot to look for resources in our community like, Ruby’s Pantry, City Taxi, community events, programs, etc. We are working on some Thrivent Grants to brighten up the Narthex. Watch for news to come. The Service Team is really growing and starting some great projects. But we could use some help. We are looking for people willing to help with the Keep in Touch with Collage Students Project. This could mean baking treats, sending Birthday Cards, or help with record keeping. Please see Sheila or John if you think you can help out with any one of these things. The more Hands the Lighter the Load. Like always we are looking for creative, service projects or groups in need. Please fill out the form posted at the Information area under Service. Put the idea form in the mailbox of Sheila or John in the Usher Room. Get a group together to do a service project that calls to your heart. You have all inspired us to find those in need and help. Thank you for your continued support helping others in this world. Redeemer has touched a lot of lives. Let the Holy Spirt flow through all of us to do God’s Work.

In Service, Sheila and John

Fr. Lars, St. Aidan’s

Redeemer hosted the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity service January 24th, a service observed by sisters and brothers in Christ around the world. The theme was “Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power.” Friends and

neighbors from Hartford churches filled the sanctuary. A 50 voice combined choir offered beautiful music. Father Lars, Father David, and Pastor Jon each spoke briefly. Father David: “Fear does no good.”

A dramatic point in the liturgy came when heavy chains, draped over the shoulders of three men, were cast off, symbolizing the power of God to set his people free from bondage.

Women’s Ministry - The group continues to meet at 12:00 noon on the second Monday of the month.

Confirmation

Since the beginning of the new year we have moved from the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament to the gospels in the New Testament. As I shared in the message in worship January 14 & 15, our confirmation gospel study started with Mark 8 where Jesus tells the disciples they are headed to Jerusalem where he will be betrayed, tortured, killed, and on the third day rise from the dead. To underscore the seriousness and the centrality of this passion prediction Mark repeats it twice more; Matthew and Luke each record it three times as well. We have four students and four gospels, so each student is assigned a gospel to read. As they read they write down: Ten cool, amazing, awesome things Jesus did Ten cool, amazing, awesome things Jesus said Five people whose lives were changed because of

Jesus Five stories of healing from your gospel One prominent disciple in your gospel plus three of

his interactions with Jesus Two famous / important verses in your gospel

And then they ponder what they would like to talk with Jesus about if he sat in with our class.

The students also helped identify the recipients of the Souper Bowl of Caring offering this year. We looked at Matthew 25 – Jesus’ concern and love for people who are hungry, thirsty, in prison, sick, or a stranger. The students added people who are homeless, people who are lonely, or grieving. The class agreed to support the Community Meal and Casa Guadalupe. Please keep Logan, Lindsay, Madison, and Owen in your prayers. Pastor Jon

Redeemer Backpacks for The Boys & Girls Club

This project is sponsored by the Redeemer Women’s Ministry Team. Our goal is to provide

food (breakfast, lunch, and a snack) to kids in need. Pick a tag off the Giving Tree and please bring your donations and place in the baskets by the

Giving Tree. We could use additional soups, fruit cups , individual macaroni & cheese cups

and pudding cups. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

We also need volunteers to help pack the backpacks. If you have any questions, please call

the office. (262-673-2550)

Communication Cards

Recently council has been talking about how we use the data that is collected each week with the communication cards. It seems like they aren’t really being used for much other than noting visitors who attend our services. Council has decided that we will no longer collect communication cards from regular members. Instead they will become visitor cards. Please encourage any visitors you see to fill out the cards.

“What Do I Have?”

What do I have, Lord, that you would need me as a servant?

Eyes, he said,

to see the beauty in all that I’ve made — and my children as they travel life’s highway.

Hands, he said,

to reach out and touch hurting souls, to give a hug or encouraging pat on the back.

Feet, he said,

to lead my children through this world of strife and to help them run from sin and follow me.

Mouth, he said,

to lift up your voice and sing praises to me so others may hear the joy in your heart.

Ears, he said,

to listen to my still, small voice of love and to hear my children when they cry for help.

Heart, he said,

so you may know the full love of my Spirit and love my children as I have loved you.

—Thomas Butler

Risking Love

To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk fail-

ure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. Love comes to those who still hope even

though they’ve been disappointed, to those who still believe even though they’ve been

betrayed, to those who still love even though they’ve been hurt before.

—Author unknown

What Can Separate Us From God?

“What can separate us from God? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. And as we share God’s love

with our brothers and sisters, God’s other children, there is no tyrant who can resist us, no opposition that cannot be ended, no hunger that cannot be fed, no wound that cannot be healed,

no hatred that cannot be turned into love, no dream that cannot be fulfilled.”

-Desmond Tutu, God Has a Dream-

The best mathematical equation I have ever seen:

1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given

When you find your heart just isn’t strong enough to tackle the mountain in front of you, take your

problem, wrap it in a prayer and turn it over to God’s care.

A Valentine Prayer

I said a Valentine prayer for you and asked the Lord above

to fill your heart and bless your soul With the precious gift of love.

I asked Him for sincere love The kind that's meant to stay Just like the generous love

You give to those you touch each day.

I prayed for love from family And from every cherished friend Then I asked the Lord to give you

His love that knows no end.
