“Reflections on 2016” A Message from Pastor Desirée

“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in

the gospel from the first day until now.” The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Philippians

It’s hard for me to believe that it has been just over a year since I joined you here at Christ Lutheran Church. I remember standing up in front of you the first time I led worship and feeling profoundly thankful for the privilege of serving as pastor to a congregation who had endured so much and come so far. Your smiling faces and easy manner helped to affirm that this call was right and true. I will admit to you that I did feel fear – fear of disappointing you, even though I know that in any human relationship, disappointment is inevitable. But I was also afraid because I didn’t know you yet, and I wondered how I would ever be able to learn so many names and faces and stories. Well, slowly but surely, names and faces and stories are coming into focus. I look out now from the pulpit, and I see people I have come to love and cherish. I have begun to know what your hopes and dreams are, what it is that keeps you up at night, what sorrows cause your heart pain, and what joys make your spirit sing. And I am so often overcome with gratitude that I have the privilege of walking alongside you in your life journeys. As a congregation, you are simply amazing. I’ve been reflecting on why I can say that with all honesty, and here are my observations after one year:

You are people of hope, and you look to the future and the immense possibilities it holds. Some congregations are sadly wishing for past “glory days,” and have a difficult time imagining that things must change to live. You recognize that we have to move forward, and you will do almost anything to share the good news of Christ.

You are courageous, and I think that your courage is borne of the adversity you faced with the flood and the devastation of the building. The people of Christ Lutheran and Augustana Lutheran were brought together

in a time of crisis and immense loss, and together you built a brand new faith community. In the process, I believe that you discovered the sort of resilience that can only come from God.

You have a great sense of humor, and a joy that runs deep.

You love your church, and you are rightfully proud of the building, but you see it as ultimately belonging to God, and you generously allow it to be used by the community.

You like to say “yes” to outward focused ministry opportunities. And the ministry includes baking pies for the neighborhood, serving free lunch to kids and their parents at Oak Park, donating a huge pile of pillows for the domestic violence shelter and paper products to the food pantry, picking up litter along Highway 83, hosting a vacation bible school open to everyone, sharing the warmth and compassion of Christ through the quilting, prayer shawl, and sleeping mat ministries, helping with new construction at Metigoshe bible camp, serving in Katie’s Kitchen, caregiving through Stephen Ministries. . . .This list could fill up an entire page.

I am grateful for the incredible leadership of our church council and mission teams. I hold in high esteem our musicians and Mark, our choir director. I am in awe of our church school teachers, working diligently with Erin’s leadership. And I am blessed to share daily ministry with Pastor Derek, Vicki, Bonnie, Ed, Vicar Kayla, and MSU Intern Karen. I began this message with the Apostle Paul’s words, and I must echo them now with you. As your pastor and as your sister in Christ, I thank God for all of you and the way you so willingly share the grace and compassion of Christ with one another and with the world God loves.

Meet Naomi…. During Lent, our congregation will explore the limited educational opportunities available around the world; especially for girls. Naomi is 23 years old and is finally able to attend Christian Community

College in Nairobi, Kenya, planning to major in Community Development and Health. Because someone recognized her scholastic abilities and potential, she has been given an opportunity for college. The Outreach Committee is inviting our congregation to help Naomi continue her education by providing her with a scholarship for her tuition. During Lent, we will focus attention on this project and encourage you to “meet Naomi” and countless girls like her around the world.

Greetings from Rob Anderson and the Congregational Council

Dear Friends in Christ, Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 2 Timothy 4:2

As I write, we are well into 2017 and find ourselves at a season sometimes called the “dead of winter” when things are either dead or lying in dormancy. This is

not true for Christ Lutheran, nothing dead or dormant here. There is no time during the year when we are “out of season.” We’re a thriving congregation full of energy and excitement. An adult education class, “Holy and Whole: It is Well With My Soul”, is being offered at this time. It’s an opportunity to explore your financial, emotional and spiritual wellness. The class meets each Sunday afternoon into March. New member orientation has taken place and we will be formally welcoming new members in February. It’s exciting to know that Christ Lutheran Church is growing in numbers along with the commitment to our faith. Two new members will be welcomed to the Congregational Council in February. The terms of Vicky Flagstad and Emily Schafer are finished. I would like to thank them for their service to the council and the whole congregation. We will miss them, but look forward to working with them in other capacities. We continue to serve record numbers at Wednesday night suppers. If anyone as an individual or part of a small group would be interested in serving this meal there is a sign-up sheet in the visitor’s center or you could contact Diane Anderson. Funds are available to cover the expenses for this meal. Josh A. reported at the last council meeting that the up-dates to the media center are almost complete. It has been fun witnessing each improvement as it is implemented. In a short time everything will be ready. If you have not had the opportunity to explore PushPay you should do that. More and more members are discovering this great method of staying connected to the church and find it an easy method of giving. God is good, God is faithful and God will provide.
