SECTION MRA: Boda Risk Aversion Read: The next set of questions will ask you to choose whether or not to invest in a risky investment given a certain amount of starting money and a known risk. You will know the chances of gain or loss and the returns to your investment should you win. Then you will have the choice to invest all of the money, part of it, or none of it.
For example, say you were to invest 100 Ksh in bananas. If you sold them all, you would receive 200 Ksh, but if they went rotten before you could sell any, you would lose your 100 Ksh. Investing in bananas therefore has a certain risk—you could make money or you could lose money. I will ask you about several different types of investments. Specifically, this investment will give you back 2.5, 3, or 4 times the amount you invest ½ of the time and will give you back nothing ½ of the time. Do you understand what I mean when I say ½ of the time? This is the chance that if I were to flip a coin in the air, that it would come up heads. FO: Use the visual aides to explain the alternatives clearly to the respondent. Make a note if it seems the respondent does not understand the game, is not giving sincere answers, or has unusual logic in answering.
Example 1. How much of 100 Ksh would you like to invest in tomatoes if half the time you would make three times what you bought them for, and half the time they would go rotten before you could sell any of them and you would make nothing? This means that ½ the time the investment is tripled (multiplied by 3) and ½ the time you lose your investment.
These are your options. Please put an X next to your choice.

SECTION LA: LOSS AVERSION In this section, I would like to ask you about several choices you can make. In each case, I will give you an option between playing a game or declining to play a game at all. You are under no obligation to play any of the games ‐ it is totally up to you. However, in each game, there is a chance that you will win some money, and a chance that you will lose some money. At the end of the questionnaire, I am going to randomly pick one of these questions to pay you. If have chosen to play the game and lose the money, you will have to actually pay me the amount that you lose. If you choose to play the game and win the money, I will have to pay you. But we are playing for real – so make sure that you really want to play the game if you choose it, because there’s a chance that you’ll lose out. If you decide not to play any of the games, you get nothing; if you chose to play the any of the games and your question is picked, we will play the odds. If you win, you I pay you the winning amount; if you lose, you must pay me the amount lost.

WATAFITI: Pascaline Dupas, Frederico Finan and Jonathan Robinson
Nchini Kenya, utafiti unafanywa na shirika la I.P.A.
Nakala zitawekwa mahali salama. Baada ya utafiti nakala zote zitaharibiwa.
Nakubali kushiriki katika utafiti huu. Umenipa:
A. Maelezo juu ya mradi.
B. Majibu kwa maswali niliyouliza.
