The painting of external pipework, however, is recommended to give protection against the discolouring effectsof strong sunlight.

Effect of FrostFrost does not affect the operation of the systems; sub-zero temperatures, however, reduce the impact strength.

MaintenanceDesigners should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. It is advisableto paint pipes fixed externally for protection against the effects of strongsunlight.

Traps DescriptionTraps are manufactured in white polypropylene in 32mm and 40mm nominalsizes, for connection to 32mm and 40mm BSP standard waste outlets. Therange includes tubular bottle, swivel neck, and anti-syphon types. Traps aresupplied with washers to BS 2494.

Trap OutletsA choice of either Push-Fit Varifix outlet or universal compression outlet isavailable. Both will accept Push-Fit or Solvent-Weld plastics pipe work to BS 5254 orBS 5255 and imperial or British ‘metric’ copper.Varifix traps can be supplied with outlets for connection to 40mm ISO metricpipe.

PerformanceThe traps are manufactured to meet all the requirements of BS 3943 andcarry the kitemark where applicable. All Hepworth traps have seals to the requirements of BS 2494.

Barvac TrapAnti-syphon trap for automatic protection from syphonage problemsassociated with waste discharge systems. The trap is self-cleaning, has nomoving parts and has a flow rate in excess of that required by BS 3943.Special design features give high flow rates and the bowl is removable for easyaccess and cleaning.

32mm: 50 litres/minute.40mm: 67 litres/minute.Normal deep seal: 85mm.Minimum seal possible after syphonage (extreme conditions): 40mm.

DescriptionHepworth Plumbing Waste Systems are manufactured in 32mm, 40mm and50mm nominal sizes in polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS) and modified unplasticised PVC (MUPVC).A significant feature of the Hepworth System is the patented Push-Fit jointingmethod. An ‘O’ ring seal is retained in a moulded housing by a snap-in end clip. This gives a simple, positive Push-Fit sealing action and incorporates anallowance for thermal movement of the pipework at each joint. This joint is also available in a Push-Fit Varifix form. The Push-Fit Varifix socketaccepts Push-Fit Solvent-Weld pipework, metric and imperial copper pipe.Alternatively the solvent jointing method makes these systems particularlysuited to prefabrication.

DescriptionHepworth Plumbing Soil and Ventilation Systems are manufactured in 82mm,110mm and 160mm sizes in PVC-U (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride). Thesystems are available with either push-fit or solvent-weld joints.

ApplicationTo provide an efficient means of drainage of waste water and foul dischargefrom appliances in single and multi-storey buildings.

Push-Fit SoilThe Push-Fit joints allow for the expansion of pipes and incorporate a unique, patented purpose designed sealing method with double location lock. A sealing ring is contained in a moulded housing designed to preventdisplacement either during installation or as a result of the action of expansionand contraction.

Solvent-Weld SoilThe use of Solvent-Weld joints enables on-site construction, or prefabrication, which may be undertaken on or off site. Solvent-Weld soil is available in avariety of colours to complement its surroundings. Both these lightweight soil systems are simple to install and are maintenancefree.

Composition and ManufactureSoil pipe is extruded in PVC-U. Both Push-Fit and Solvent-Weld soil fittingsare injection moulded in PVC-U.

Thermal MovementCoefficient of linear expansion for PVC-U is 0.5 x 10-4/°C temperature rise ie: 1mm per 2m length for a temperature rise of 10°C.

Push-Fit JointingAn allowance is made for the expansion of pipes and fittings in each socket.

Solvent-Weld JointingExpansion is allowed for by the use of push-fit fittings at relevant points in thesystem, in accordance with BS 5572, Code of Practice for Sanitary Pipework.

Effect of Solar RadiationProlonged exposure to sunlight will cause the colours to fade. It may alsoresult in the slight loss of impact strength. It is not expected that this wouldaffect the performance of the system. Protection may be gained by painting. Most exterior gloss paints are suitable for this purpose.

Effect of FrostFrost does not affect the performance of PVC-U. However, impact strength isreduced at sub-zero temperatures. Care should be taken when installationsare undertaken at these temperatures.

FlammabilityPVC-U is self-extinguishing as defined by BS 2782: Method 508A.

Chemical ResistancePVC-U is resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. BS code of practice 312 Part1, gives comprehensive information on the chemical resistance of PVC-U andshould be consulted in case of doubt. Additional information can be obtainedfrom: Technical Support Hotline Tel: 01709 856406 Fax: 01709 856407.

MaintenanceDesigners should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. Access pipesand bosses are available within both ranges.

Adaptation to 40mm and 50mm ISO Metric OD PipeAll Hepworth nominal 40mm and 50mm bossed fittings and solvent bossadaptors can be supplied to accept 40mm or 50mm ISO metric waste pipes.

SiteworkJointing

Push-Fit SystemsEnsure the pipe is cut square and chamfered prior to assembly with fittings.Lubricate the pipe and fitting with Silicone Lubricant S254 and push-fit tothe full socket depth. Withdraw the pipe 5mm on the waste system and 10mm on the soil system to allow for expansion. Soil fittings with spigot endsshould be inserted into the sockets to depth marks engraved on the spigot. This procedure automatically allows for expansion.Anchor fittings with a socket bracket to maintain expansion allowance. No expansion need be allowed for on the Push-Fit overflow system.

Solvent-Weld SystemsEnsure the pipe is cut square before assembly with fittings.Use Cleaning Fluid S243 on both surfaces to be joined. This removes alldirt and machine release agents and softens the surface ready for the chemicalsolvent-weld. Failure to do this can result in joint failure.Apply Solvent Cement S241/2 evenly over mating surfaces of both pipe andsocket. Insert the pipe into the socket with a slight twisting action to the fullsocket depth.Surplus cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be firmenough to handle in 5 minutes. Please observe the safety precautions detailedon each can of solvent cement.Note: There is a small gap between the O.D. of the pipe and the I.D. of thefitting. This is to allow sufficient solvent cement into the joint to make a goodweld.Expansion of the pipework should be allowed for by incorporating expansioncouplings at predetermined lengths in long pipe runs. The pipe run should be clipped adjacent to the expansion couplings. No expansion need be allowed for on the Solvent-Weld overflow system.

TrapsWhen jointing traps to waste outlets, use the washer supplied, do not overtighten the nut (hand tight plus 1/8 turn). No other jointing compound ormaterials should be used.‘P’ traps can be converted to ‘S’ pattern by means of BW50 and CW50conversion bends. Traps are available with either Push-Fit or compressionoutlets as previously described. All traps are provided with a means of accesswhere required.

Support of pipeworkThe table below shows the recommended maximum centres for support ofpipework.

Fix clips and brackets using rust-proofed countersunk screws. Use No. 8’s onwaste and overflow systems and No. 10’s on soil system.

Soil System InstallationMark the position of brackets, drill and screw fix prior to erecting the stack.Start from the base of the stack and work up.Use S5 or S7 pipe brackets in conjunction with S6 socket brackets. On multi-storey installations, use S8 rust protected metal brackets on boththe pipe and sockets.

Drain Connection (a) Connections to Salt Glazed and Unjointed Clay

The S4 is used to connect to old clay underground drainage systems.Using a sand and cement compound, cement S4 into the clay collarensuring that the top of the connector is above floor level to allowexpansion of the pipework.

(b) Connections to Cast IronThe S4A is designed to connect to cast iron underground drainagesystems.Use gaskin in the bottom third of the cast iron socket and make the jointusing cold caulking compound such as PC4.

Waste Pipe ConnectionA range of solvent-on bosses with Push-Fit joints allow connections of thewaste pipe systems to the stack.(a) Soil Bosses S101, S102 and S103:

Soil fittings are provided with shoulders to accept soil bosses. Drill out thecentre of the shoulder and attach using solvent cement.

(b) Clip Bosses and Patch Bosses S105, S106 and S95: Allows wastepipe connection to soil pipe. Drill the pipe where required and solvent-weld the boss in position.

(c) Boss Adaptors, S420, S421, S422: Are for use with the S35 solventthree way short boss pipe, or the S410, S412 deep seal floor gully only.

Metric W.C. ConnectionA range of horizontal outlet pan connectors is available for fixing to metric

pans as specified in BS 5503. These are supplied with an integral sealing

diaphragm which allows for up to 5° misalignment in any direction.

Imperial W.C. ConnectionA range of pan connectors is available to meet the varying pan spigot outside

diameters. These are Push-Fit connections, allowing easy removal in the event

of the W.C. pan becoming defective at a later date. The polyflex pan

connector is particularly adaptable because it allows for up to 5° misalignment

in any direction.

Shrink-on ConnectionFit a replacement soil ring (S360/3 or S360) onto the cast iron pipe spigot i.e.

flat edge towards the pipe. Fit the blown socket of the shrink-on connector

over the seal and apply gentle heat until the socket shrinks onto the cast iron

pipe. This will compress the ring and form a watertight seal. The cast iron

spigot should have a relatively smooth surface before making the joint.

Roof WeatheringThe Multipitch Roof Weathering Slate has been designed to provide an

easy and effective seal between either 82.4mm or 110mm soil pipes. It is

suitable for use on a variety of roof pitches from 10° to 55° and is capable of

being utilised on the most severe roof-tile profiles.

MaintenanceHepworth Plumbing Rainwater Systems are resistant to the effects ofexposure to sunlight and to the corrosive atmospheres found in industrial andcoastal areas.Low temperatures will not affect the performance of the system, but thesystems resistance to impact loading will be reduced at sub-zero temperatures, and additional care in handling is recommended. The effects of expansion and contraction can result in gutter noise undercertain conditions. This can be alleviated by the application of silicone lubricantto the gutter seals.

Special FabricationsFor particular installations that require special products a fabrication service isavailable. Information on this is available through the Technical SupportHotline: Tel: 01709 856406 Fax: 01709 856407.

Recommended Gutter Size Requirements

To specify the gutter size, two factors must be taken into consideration:1. The effective maximum roof area to be drained.2. The gutter flow capacity.

Effective Roof AreaThe effective roof area can be calculated by using the following formula:

(B + C) x length of roof = effective roof 2 area in m2

For further information refer to BS 6367: 1983 ‘Drainage of Roofs and Pavedareas’. In the case of flat roofs, the roof plan area should be used.

B

C

Length

Gutter Flow CapacityGutter flow capacity is dependent upon three factors:1. System type.2. Outlet position.3. Whether gutter is laid level or to a specified fall. The information in Table No. 1 calculates the correct gutter flow capacity fora specified system profile, outlet position and fall. This information has beenbased on a rainfall intensity of 75mm per hour and recommendations from BS 6367: 1983.

Recommended Gutter Support Spacings

Gutter support brackets for Half Round and Square section systems should befixed at maximum 1000mm centres in normal weather conditions. In abnormalweather conditions such as regular heavy snowfall, BS 6367: 1983 recommends the use of snow boards to avoid guttersbecoming blocked or over-laden. As a precautionary measure against theweight of snow the maximum spacings should be reduced to 750mm.High Capacity brackets and fittings with integral screw mountings (i.e. unionbracket and running outlet) can be fixed at maximum 1200mm centres innormal weather conditions or at 900mm centres as a precaution against theweight of snow.

These values can be used except in the following circumstances:

If sharp cornered 90° angle fixed within:-

a) 2 metres of outlet then increase roof area which can be drained by 20%.

b) 2 to 4 metres of outlet then increase roof area which can be drained by 10%.

If round cornered 90° angle fixed within:-

a) 2 metres of outlet then increase roof area which can be drained by 10%.

b) 2 to 4 metres of outlet then increase roof area which can be drained by 5%.

SOIL

Fixing

The method of fixing is dependant on the type of floor construction. In solidconcrete floors, the gully can be installed within the floor itself (Fig. No. 1).

In timber or concreted suspended floors, the gully body may requireadditional support by strapping or boxing in.In solid floors, the clamp base can be solvent welded directly to the gullybody. In suspended floors an intermediate length of 110mm soil orPlastiDrain pipe will position the outlet clear of joists or beams (Fig. No. 2).

When the gully is in position in the floor, the vinyl floor covering can be laidover the gully. Care should be taken to record the position of the gully priorto the vinyl floor covering being laid.

The vinyl floor covering is cut and trimmed to the line indicated on the clampbase. The flooring is glued into the clamp base, taking care that there is noglue below the line.

The self locating clamp is positioned in the clamp base, and fixed with the selftapping screws supplied. Care should be taken to ensure that the screws atopposite sides of the clamp are tightened together so that unequal pressure isnot placed upon the clamp base. Care should also be taken not to overtighten the screws.

When the vinyl flooring is fixed tightly in the clamp, the self locating grid canbe fitted using the twist lock action.

To clean or rod the gully, remove the gully grid and take out the funnel andO-ring. When replacing the funnel, ensure that the O-ring is fitted correctly.

Hygienic Self Sealing Waste ValvePrevents the escape of foul sewer air from waste discharge systems.

Actively maintaining a pressure equilibrium in soil and wasteinstallations.

is a self sealing valve designed to close the waste connection below asanitary appliance to prevent the escape of foul sewer air into the dwelling andthereby complies with the requirements of BS 5572: 1994 Code of practicefor Sanitary pipework and Document H of the Building Regulations 1985‘Drainage and Waste Disposal’.

Where there is a waste branch which enters the stack above the WC branch,

will provide an air inlet and no air admittance valve is required.

Note: Care should be taken to ensure that the underground drainage system

is not completely sealed. Natural open ventilation is required at the

head of each main drain run and/or at every tenth dwelling.

Extensive testing has shown that the valve performs under everydayconditions in which traditional water sealed traps are prone to failure.

The valve will perform under back pressures which are 10 timesgreater than those experienced in a typical soil and waste system.

functions without the use of water, and complies with all other

relevant functional requirements of BS 3943: Specification for plastics waste

traps.

is certified by WIMLAS; certificate number 042/97, to be a

satisfactory means of excluding foul air from a building within a single stack

drainage system.

BBA Certification is applied for.

valve can be installed vertically or horizontally (with an adaptor) and is available in 32mm and 40mm.

Inlet

The inlet is provided with a screwed cap, flanged tail and sealing ring, which

are designed to connect to waste fittings conforming to BS EN 274, or

BS 3380, or to a inlet adaptor.

Fixing

When fixed horizontally to an appliance outlet or to a sloping pipe, in order

to prevent standing water and to provide a continuous fall, must be

installed with the ribs underneath - Fig. No. 1.

Offer up the inlet to the threaded tail of the waste pipe and tighten

the threaded cap by hand (check that the cap screws on square and does not

‘cross-thread’), hand tight should be adequate. When the screwed cap is tight,

proper seating should be obtained, and the body should be secure.

Outlet

The outlet is provided with a universal compression connection which is

designed for use with BS 5254 Polypropylene pipe, BS 5255 ABS, MUPVC

or polypropylene pipe, BS 2871: Part 1: Table X copper pipe, or equivalent

imperial size copper pipe to BS 659.

1 Cut the pipe to length, allowing for the full compression socket depth,

(preferably using an appropriate pipe cutter).

2 Remove any ‘swarf’ from the end of the plastic pipe. Ream the copper

pipe end to remove any ‘burr’, and file if necessary to remove any

external sharp edges. Mark the socket depth on the pipe, and check that

the pipe section to be jointed is free of any surface damage which may

affect the joint seal.

3 Unscrew the cap from the outlet, and slide the cap and rubber

seal onto the pipe. Fig. No. 2.

4 Insert the pipe end fully into the socket.

5 Slide the rubber seal and screwed cap up against the face of the socket,

and tighten the cap by hand, (check that the cap is square to the body

and does not ‘cross-thread’), hand tight should be adequate to form a

proper seal.

- Sitework - continuedWaste pipes should have sufficient slope to convey the likely flow, but shouldnot be less than 18mm/metre in accordance with BS 5572. When using

, there is no maximum slope limitation which is often a restrictionapplicable to single stack waste systems.

As is unaffected by siphonage or compression, combined waste pipingcan be used to connect more than one appliance to the stack. Fig. No. 5shows how can be used to simplify the plumbing to the typicalbathroom.

Any branch discharge pipes serving appliances not fitted with (eg. a range of W.C’s) should be designed and installed in accordance with BS 5572.

Discharge stacks should continue to be sized, and vented where appropriate,in accordance with BS 5572.

The concise range allows connection to push fit and solvent weld systemswith either factory assembled fixed lengths or made to measure lengths cutfrom coils and assembled on site.

The HepFlex™ Waste range has been designed to use in conjunction withthe hygienic self sealing valve from Hepworth Plumbing as well as

conventional water seal traps.

JointingConnection of HepFlex Waste fittings and HepFlex flexible waste pipe

1 Check you have the correct HepFlex Waste fittings for the type of wastesystem you are connecting to FBW6 or FCW6 for push fit waste toBS 5254 and FSBW6 or FSCW6 for solvent weld waste to BS 5255.

2 Cut the HepFlex Waste pipe square using the recommended cutters(HD77).

3 Ensure the inner surface of the HepFlex Waste pipe and the tapered spigotof the HepFlex Waste fittings are clean and dry.

4 Apply solvent cement (S242) evenly over mating surfaces of both pipe andtapered spigot. Insert the tapered spigot into the pipe with a slighttwisting action to the full spigot depth.

5 Surplus cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be firmenough to handle within 5 minutes. Please observe the safety precautionsdetailed on each can of solvent cement.

Note: There is a small gap between the I.D. of the pipe and the O.D. of the tapered spigot. This is to allow sufficient solvent cement into the jointto make a good weld.

Push Fit Systems to BS 5254Perform steps 1 to 5 as detailed overleaf using either FBW6 for 32mm wasteor FCW6 for 40mm waste. If a prefabricated HepFlex Waste unit is beingused then ensure you have the correct unit for the type of waste system youare connecting to (FBW30 or FCW30 for push fit waste) and proceed withstep 6.

6 Lubricate the HepFlex parallel (not tapered) spigot and the socket ofthe push fit waste fitting with Silicon Lubricant (S254) and push fit tothe full socket depth. Withdraw the pipe 5mm on the waste systemto allow for expansion.

Solvent Weld Systems to BS 5255Perform steps 1 to 5 as detailed overleaf using either FSBW6 for 32mmwaste or FSCW6 for 40mm waste. If a prefabricated HepFlex Wasteunit is being used then ensure you have the correct unit for the type ofwaste system you are connecting to (FSBW30 or FSCW30 for solventweld waste) and proceed with step 7.7 Use cleaning fluid (S243) on the HepFlex parallel (not tapered) spigot

and the inner surface of the solvent weld fitting.8 Apply solvent cement (S242) evenly over mating surfaces of both the

spigot and socket and insert the spigot into the socket with a twistingaction to the full socket depth.

9 Surplus cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should befirm enough to handle within 5 minutes. Please observe the safetyprecautions detailed on each can of solvent cement.

Other inlet combinations are available to special order.

Hepworth Plumbing Air Admittance valves are recommended for use in aboveground drainage systems installed in domestic and non-domestic buildings inaccordance with BS 5572: 1994.1. The valves provide a means of ventilation to the drainage system to

prevent the loss of water seals in traps and consequent release of foul airinto the building.

2. The valves are for internal use only, and should preferably be installed in anon-habitable space, such as a duct or roof where it is easily accessible butnot subject to interference. The insulating polystyrene cover should beleft in place when there is a possibility of condensation forming within thevalve.

3. The S204 valves are for use on soil stacks serving buildings up to fivestoreys high. The S204 can be connected directly to 110mm pipe bypushing the pipe over the rubber seal. For connection to 82mm pipe thepipe should be pushed into the rubber seal.

4. The S204/2 valves are for use on soil stacks serving buildings up to threestoreys high. The S204/2 is also suitable for connection to waste pipes toprevent water loss from the trap seals by self and induced syphonagearising from water flow in small diameter branch discharge pipes. The S204/2 can be connected directly to 110mm pipe by pushing the pipeover the rubber seal. For connection to 82mm pipe, the pipe should bepushed into the rubber seal. For connection to 50mm pipe, the 110/82mmadaptor should be discarded, and the valve connected directly to the pipeusing the 50mm compression outlet.

Application Guidance1. The head of any drain should be vented to atmosphere.2. Any branch longer than 6m to a single appliance, or 12m to a group of

appliances.3. No more than nine consecutive branch drains should be vented with air

admittance valves.4. Valves should be installed within the building, preferably in a non-habitable

space where there is limited risk of freezing.5. Valves should be fitted above the overspill level of the highest appliance.

HepFlex Waste - Sitework - continuedFactory made lengths in 32mm are 315mm long which is sufficient for a90º bend or a 75mm offset. The 40mm assembled lengths are 365mmlong which is also sufficient for a 90º bend and a 100mm offset. All lengths of HepFlex Waste should be clipped or suitably supported toensure compliance with the Building Regulations. Pipe clips BW17(32mm) or CW17 (40mm) can be used.Lengths fitted horizontally should be fully supported. Horizontal lengthsgreater than 200mm should be supported every 150mm for a minimumdistance of 15mm.When connecting HepFlex Waste to short lengths of rigid pipe, the rigidpipe needs to be supported using a minimum of 2 clips. The location ofthe clips should be not more than 100mm from the ends of the rigidpipe to accommodate fittings and positional adjustment. For longer runs, the rigid pipe should be clipped in the conventional manner as follows:

Horizontal installation – 0.75m centres

Vertical installation – 1.5m centres

To avoid the possibility ofsagging, the width (W)should never exceedheight (H).
