INVITATION FROM THE CHAIR

INVITATION FROM THE SCIENTIFIC CHAIR

DR GEORGE PALConference Chair and AOS Federal President

PROF TERRY WALTONConference Scientific Chair

On behalf of the Australasian Osseointegration Society, it is my pleasure to announce the AOS 10th Biennial Conference will take place at the National Convention Centre Canberra on 14 – 17 October 2015.

We have invited world-renowned speakers who will contribute to an outstanding three days, providing an authoritative and reliable scientific and clinical basis for the treatment of patients, as well as addressing exciting new innovations and research. The event will provide something for everyone, dentists, technicians, hygienists and staff, with multiple plenary sessions, multiple concurrent sessions, special sessions for technicians, hygienists, dental assistants and practice managers. There will be a breakfast session to allow for closer interaction with the presenters. Sponsors will have preconference workshops. Limited attendance workshops for our technicians. A large exhibition with all the global leading companies offering the latest products and technological innovations.

Discover the home of the Australian Story in Canberra, where national attractions and hidden gems deliver an array of unexpected delights among the leafy surrounds, including stylish restaurants, hip bars, boutique shopping, great outdoor fun and a busy calendar of events and festivals. Located on the ancient lands of the traditional owners, the Ngunnawal people, Canberra is thought to derive its name from the Aboriginal word Kamberra or ‘meeting place’. The surrounding region offers more than 30 wineries, historic townships, quiet coastlines, the lush southern highlands and the alpine roof of Australia.

The organising committee look forward to you and your team joining us in Canberra in 2015 for a program that will challenge your thinking, making this the premiere implant conference of the year.

It is thirty-five years since the commercial introduction of osseointegration into Australia, twenty years since the inaugural meeting of the Federal AOS, and within a year of the recent death of the forefather of osseointegration, PI Brånemark. It is therefore appropriate that we take stock of where we have come from, where we are currently, and what is in the future for implant dentistry.

There has been an exponential development of implant-related techniques and components but over these years there has been less emphasis on understanding the other “cogs in the wheel” - the patients and operators. What are the advantages and disadvantages of traditional multidisciplinary management compared with the single operator? How do we assess whether patients are seeking treatment for dental-health or to satisfy unrealistic self-image expectations? Are there some patients who we should not be treating as they are at high risk of treatment failure?

Within this challenging environment, the balance between science and commerce is often lost. Are some products developed primarily to gain a marketing edge rather than enhancing treatment outcomes? Is there a problem with the commercial promotion of techniques beyond the sale of company products?

We are fortunate to have three experienced, world-renowned keynote speakers, several international speakers, generously supported by our sponsors, as well as local experienced and internationally recognised clinicians to explore these issues. It augurs well for a robust and stimulating scientific program.

After a thorough introduction on clinical study design and interpretation, the literature regarding the effectiveness of various therapies to treat peri-implantitis will be critically evaluated. At the end of the presentation, opinions on how to treat peri-implantitis will be presented with discussion of some cases.

Prosthodontically Driven and Surgically Driven? Is This a Reality for Implant Treatment?Dr Kent Yuen This short presentation and hands on session will explore the option of placing implants in the ideal surgically driven position within the host bone. This will minimize the need for grafting and decrease treatment time. Participants will learn how this seemingly non-ideal treatment can result in a retrievable prosthodontically ideal outcome using the CoAxis implant.

Immediate Molar Replacement - Rapid and Reliable Integration, Even in Compromised SitesBarbara WoodhouseImmediate placement of implants into molar extraction sites has been a challenging procedure that eluded a simple solution until the Introduction of the Max implant by Dr Andrew Ackermann and Southern Implants. This presentation explains the design advantages, demonstrates placement technique and examines the rates of success. To support this, cases of Max use in compromised sites will be shown

DISCOVER CANBERRACanberra is the capital city of Australia where most of the nation’s government and political businesses are undertaken on a daily basis against a natural backdrop of Australia’s unique flora and fauna.

The beauty of Canberra manifests itself in its ability to provide historic architecture and urban hubs of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops against pristine natural surroundings of sapphire waters and beaches, rugged and rural bush land, and alpine snowy peaks.

Home to around 380,000 residents, the nation’s capital is one of the world’s few planned cities designed to be accessible, vibrant and active. It’s recreational parks, trail walkways, ranger guided activities and national reserves attests to the city’s urban design and pays homage to the natural and historical heritage of the region.

VENUEAND ACCOMMODATION

National attractions include discovering the political history of Australia at Parliament House, understanding the involvement of Australia in war at the Australian War Memorial, witnessing a vast collection of Australian history and culture at the National Museum of Australia, having fun with science at Questacon, picking up your own minted Australian coin at the Royal Australian Mint, or appreciating the unique Australian fauna at the National Zoo & Aquarium.

The natural surroundings offer opportunities to taste unique cool climate wine at one of Canberra’s district vineyards, try bushwalking at the Murrembidgee Discovery Track, go for a swim at large sandy beaches, and to try out fishing along clean and undisturbed rivers dotting the region.

SPRING IN CANBERRA AND FLORIADESpring in Canberra means longer warm days with plenty of sunshine hours, bright mornings and brisk nights. It also heralds in Australia’s biggest spring event, Floriade. Every year for four distinctive weeks from September to October, Canberra blooms with a colourful assortment of award winning gardens, educational horticultural workshops, engaging entertainment, and fun-filled recreational activities at the Commonwealth Park.

For more information about the Floriade event, visit www.floriadeaustralia.com.

WINECanberra’s regional landscape is home to more than 140 vineyards which start to awaken with fresh buds when longer warm days are experienced during Spring. This makes October the prime time to visit many of Canberra’s district vineyards where you’ll have the opportunity to taste the cool climate wines that are characteristic of the type of wine produced in regional Canberra.

Most of the vineyards in Canberra are located approximately 35 minutes from the city centre with winery tours being the perfect way to visit the vineyards, taste the wines and meet the winemakers for a more sensual wine tasting experience.

For more information on which vineyard to visit and which winery tour to partake in, visit www.canberrawines.com.au.

CLIMATEThe climate in Canberra during October is usually cool with slightly warmer temperatures experienced towards the end of the month. The temperature usually ranges from 18°C to 27°C. Ensure you bring a jacket for coller evening temperatures.

CURRENCYThe Australian dollar (AUD) is a decimal currency with units in dollars and cents (100 cents to the dollar).  Travellers cheques are widely accepted, as are the major credit cards VISA, Mastercard and (to a lesser extent) AMEX and Diners Card. Did you know an overseas tourist can claim a refund of the goods and services tax (GST) and wine equalisation tax (WET) that they pay on goods they buy in Australia. The refund only applies to goods which are taken as hand luggage or worn on to the aircraft or ship when they leave the country.

ELECTRICITYAustralia runs on AC 240V, 50hz current, so plug adaptors with transformers are essential. If you need to purchase a transformer and an adapter, you will be able to buy them from most travel goods stores and some electrical retail stores in Australia.

Once you land at Canberra International Airport, you have the option of utilising the Airport Express Shuttle which takes you to and from the Canberra International Airport, Russell and Canberra city centre.
