Biographical History

Henry Morris or Enri O’Muirgheasa was born in Co. Monaghan. He was a teacher and subsequently a school inspector for the Department of Education. He was involved in the revival of Irish language, forming the Monaghan branch of the Gaelic League and was interested in antiquarian studies. He was a founder member of the Louth Historical and Archaeological society. He is best known for recording oral tradition and folklore in Irish in the Monaghan, Louth and south Armagh area during his lifetime. He was also a collector of 18th and 19th century Irish manuscripts. He was awarded an honorary MA from Queen’s University Belfast in 1936.

Content and Structure

Scope and Content

Correspondence relating to Morris’s antiquarian research, publication of material, his involvement in the Gaelic League and material relating to the recording of oral tradition. Correspondents include Padraig Pearse, who wrote to Morris in his capacity as the editor of An Claidheamh Solais regarding pieces Morris had written for the newspaper, and Irish Scholars such as Douglas Hyde, P.W. Joyce and J.H. Lloyd.
