Drawing is an important process of invention for Henry Moore. He uses his drawing studies as reference for his larger public sculptures.

Drawing Exercise 1Using a selection of different bones and skeleton parts, make a page of drawing studies in your sketchbook using graphite or charcoal and chalk on sugar/brown paper.

Drawing Exercise 2Develop some of these drawings into a selection of possible sculptures using your imagination

Clay Exercise 1Practice modeling some of the different bones in clay. Remember to look closely at the object from different angles and study its structure whilst modeling.

Clay Exercise 2Develop your own abstract sculpture based on the human body. Look at the work of Henry Moore for reference.

Research the artist Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Present in your sketchbook.

1. Make a drawing study of each artist’s work and present with basic summarised facts.

2. Write a 200-word paragraph, comparing and contrasting their work, making sure you consider the following in your analysis:

Formal elements - shapes, balance, movement, tone, colour, etc..

Process - the different techniques used I.e. casting, materials used, etc..

Content - the ideas behind the work, the intentions of the artist, etc..
