A Lyon County young- ster recently experienced a personal act of compas- sion with a haircut and do- nation of those long tress- es to the Locks of Love. The donor was 5-year- old Tori Conger who had her very long hair cut and styled on Jan. 6. The stylist for the spe- cial event was Kristy Men- ser of Beauty and the Beast in Princeton. Locks of Love, which became a public, non-prof- it organization in Decem- ber 1997, works to provide hairpieces to children (un- der age 21) in the U.S. and Canada, who suffer from long-term medical hair loss because of cancer or many other medical condi- tions. Most of the children who benefit from Locks of Love have lost their hair because of a medical con- dition called alopecia area- ta, which has no known cause or cure. This hair loss often occurs in cancer patients as a side effect of chemotherapy treatment. The prosthetic hair- pieces distributed through Locks of Love have the benefit of helping to re- store self-esteem and con- fidence to the youth who experience hair loss. Tori learned about the Locks of Love program from her mother, Amanda, last year when she turned 5. Amanda Conger said that when she asked her daughter about making the donation of her hair, Tori became very excited to know that she could help other children. Tori’s hair had been growing since she was a baby. Amanda said that Tori loves her new haircut and plans to let her hair grow long again so that she can make another donation to Locks of Love. Tori attends kindergar- ten at the Christian Fel- lowship School in Draffen- ville. She wants everyone to know that most anyone can donate hair to Locks of Love and anyone can sponsor a Locks of Love child by donating money to the program. Caitlyn is the granddaughter of Sherry Paxton of Princeton, Mickey Brown of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. Ada Lou Hughes of Princeton and the late Trice Hughes. She is the great-granddaughter of Mrs. Sara Aikins of Princeton and the late John Aikins, and the Rev. Jay and Cecile Brown of Jacksonville, Fla. A graduate of Western Kentucky University with a degree in finance, she is employed at Fruit of the Loom in Bowling Green as a logistics analyst. Joey is the grandson of Bobby and Barbara Keith of Franklin and Mrs. Joan Traughber of Franklin and the late Ed Traughber. A graduate of Western Kentucky University with a degree in mechanical engineering, he is employed at Plymouth Tube in Hopkinsville as a facilities engineer. Wedding vows will be exchanged Saturday, March 31, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Simon’s Island, Ga., with Honorable Justice Lisabeth Hughes Abramson officiating.
