We were asked to make an in-teractive set that could be driven around Los Angeles County for the Children’s Hospital so that school children may learn about street safety in a safe but inter-active environment. Our goal was to keep things lightweight, compact and durable. My fi rst task was to present initial plans, elevations, and renderings to the designer but more importantly to provide feedback on her initial ideas and work together to create an initial concept to present.

Page 18: Henry Alvarado Design Portfolio

After the project was approved for construction, I was brought on as a graphic designer to design interactive inflatable cars. The cars are an important aspect of the instillation as they provide a safe alternative to teaching children about street safety. All cars were designed at half-scale in order to better conform to a children’s environment. In addi-tion to the two full cars, one car was designed to back out of a drive way and in order to save space, only half of it was designed.

Over the span of two years, I worked for USC Professor of Architecture James Steele. This part-time work had taken me through the process of digitizing over 40 years of work that include: books, plans, essays, lectures, class related infor-mation and personal artifacts. All of this work has culminated in the editing, design, and creation of a book on his life’s work. I have also finished working as an assistant editor on a book about the work of Sidney Eisenshtat and have also researched several other architects such as Jafar Tukan, and Hassan Fathy for other biographical books the will be edited or written by James Steele.

The film was set during the invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi forces. Our task was to replicate an environment to the of a war torn country throughout Southern California locations and sets. In addition to keeping within the historical and cultural context, by providing graphics in Arabic an English, creating and renting props relevant to the time, place, and culture, we sought to create an isolated environment for both a tortured society and a single soul.

This film is set in an alternate Victorian San Francisco Era. Our sets and locations included a jail, courthouse, Victorian Era home, and The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. One of my tasks was to document the various locations through plans, ele-vations, and photos in order to coordinate the best approach to the elements of style in Victorian architecture with the director and the rest of the art department crew in order to coordinate with props, costumes, and set design.

Our shoot took place in the mountains of the Los Angeles Nation-al Forest with one day to stage a plane crash that was critical to the story. This included placing an actual single engine plane on one of the mountainsides, creating an impact crater and trail in the snow by shoveling the snow and creating the path in a matter of hours and destroying the plane to create a wreckage. Constant commu-nication was key in planning and executing this staged scene in order to provide the cast and crew the safest environment possible in what would otherwise look hostile.

Page 30: Henry Alvarado Design Portfolio

Our goal was to create a children’s environment through a three-sid-ed partitioned set would allow the camera crew to follow the children around the set in an uninterrupted walkthrough. Everything would be derived from a child’s perspective and the plans, elevations, and ren-derings reflect that nature. Although this somewhat unorthodox ap-proach was followed I still provided the construction crew enough in-formation to integrate into the program an interview room with green screen, locker room/meeting area, and a main staging where the chil-dren would report baseball related news.

I was contacted by set decorator Ellen Brill to create two skyscraper models for the set of a New York City architecture firm. Ellen and I decided that the design of the models would be New York City skyscraper architecture from the modern movement. This decision was influenced in part by the show’s design basis, specifically the incorporation of strong vertical and horizontal planes. We wanted to provide models that were visually inter-esting to shoot and light, but would seem authentic to the setting. With this loose design concept, I was given five days to completely design, build, and deliver the models.

The first step I took in constructing this 1/4” scale model was to export the Vector Works files from the set designer into AutoCAD and begin to adjust the plans and elevations to prepare them for laser cutting. I broke down the eleva-tions into individual pieces to make the most efficient use of the 1/8” Plexiglas and time on the laser cutters. After each piece was cut, I hand scored the CTU plan on a 1/2” Plexi-glas base and used Weld On epoxy as the bonding agent.

The same process, with the previously shown CTU model, was followed in the construction of this mod-el. The only exceptions were that the set designer for this set drew his plans and elevations by hand. After the documents were scanned, I resized them to 1/4” scale and traced them on Auto CAD. Also, all of the circular elements in the model were constructed by entirely hand.
