Leibniz bel ieved self-consciousness to be not only the f i rs t , indubi tablecer ta in ty of a rea l ex i s ten t en t i ty , bu t a l so the pr incip le of dedu ct ion fo r the

jus t i f ica t ion of a l l fundam ental concepts o f onto logy. A nd K an t fo l low ed

Leibniz, givin g his ~principle a turn to the subject ive; through an analysis

of the s t ructure of sel f-consciousness , one can ascertain, what "knowledge"

and "un der s tand ing" in general mean. For F ichte , th i s st ructure is the unique

problem of phi losophy, one which includes a l l o thers . And even for Hegel ,

who wanted to put an end to this phi losophy o, f subject ive, certainty, the

crucial experiment for his speculat ive logic was the demonstrat ion that only

such a logic is. sui table for interp ret ing th e ph eno m en on of self-consciousness.

Em pir ica l ly or ien ted phi losophy has no lack o f s ingular pr incip les o f deduc-

t ion, bu t eve n fo r empiricism self-consciousness is an excep t ional case of

unaccus tom ed d i f f icu l ty requi r ing special analys is . Da vid H um e adm i t ted

him, , and his scruples have yet to be overcome. But his original cri t icism

of those wh o speak o f " se lf -consciousness" in phi losophy w i th too . mu ch

emphas is and w ho use dubious argum ents draw n f r om th i s not ion to butt ress

thei r wobbly metaphys ics has m et wi th agreem ent and approval . In addi t ion ,

rad ical so lu t ions have been proposed , which a im at doing away wi th con-

sciousness as a special proble m a nd w ith "self-consciousness" as a mea ning-

fu l concept . Wi l l i am James was the f i r s t to make th i s sugges t ion1, and his

analysis convinced Russel l , al though somewhat belatedly.2 Independent ly o . f

this and s tart ing from total ly different presupposi t ions. , co,nt inental phi los-

ophy has arr ived at s imilar posi t ions, the most important of which is that o, f

Heidegger. However, this comprehensive cri t ical undertaking, which could

cou nt even W it tgenste. in am on g its adherents, has no t succeeded in dep rivingthe te rm "self-consciousness" of i ts currency. At a ny rate, in such despised




bo rde r ing disc ipl ines as psychoanalysis and psy ched elic phi lo sop hy, the con -

cept off " se l f-consc iousness" remains of dom inant imp or tance ; and even a

phi losopher who i s f a r r emoved f rom a l l such tendenc ies , S t rawson, has

r e c en t ly da im e d tha t t he s t r uctu r e o f e xpe r i e nc e c a nno t be a na lyz e d w i thou t

a con cept of the ident i ty of the cogni t ive subjec t . 8

The ve ry fac t tha t these rad ica l so lu t ions have seemed necessa ry and tha t

the va r ious a t tempts have led to d iametr ica l ly opposed pos i t ions ind ica tes

tha t he r e we ha ve a p r e s s ing f unda me n ta l p r ob le m o f pa r t i c u l a r i n t e r e s t .

And i t is with this problem, or a t least with one of i ts most essentia l aspects ,

tha t th i s paper dea ls . For the sake of a rgument , the inves t iga t ion wi l l s ta r t

f rom the assumpt ion tha t consc iousness i s a s ta te of a f fa i r s wi th which weare fami l ia r , and tha t i t i s a meaningfu l ta sk to t ry to g ive an account of i t s

s tructure . Here one can and must ask whether consciousness is inte l l igible

inde pe nde n t ly o r whe the r i t c a n be unde r s tood on ly on the ba s i s o f a p r io r

analysis of self-con sdo usn ess. In an y case, self-consciousness can no t be

unders tood wi thout an ana lys is of consc iousness . But the a t tempt to de te r -

mine the s t ruc ture of consc iousness wi l l l ead to d i f f icu l t ie s and wi l l f ina l ly

po in t to a fun dam enta l d i f f icu l ty for any theory of consc iousness and se l f -

consciousness a s we l l. T his i s no t the d i f f icu l ty which m ot iva ted the rad ica l

a t tempts to d o away wi th a l l d i scourse about "consc iousness ," bu t i t i s a new

argument in the i r suppor t . Thus i t wi l l become necessa ry to eva lua te these

a t tempts to ban any use of the concept " se l f -consc iousness . " As a r e su l t o f

this examination, a suggest ion for a new type of theory of se lf -consciousness

wi l l be made , a type which avoids the d i f f icu l t ie s ment ioned . F ina l ly , the

p r opose d the o r y w i l l be a pp l i e d to t he p r ob le ms wh ic h ha v e s tood in t he

forefront in the most s ignif icant theor ies of se lf -consciousness.

The la rge compass of the problems involved he re makes i t imposs ib le to

g ive more than a ske tch of the most sa l ien t a spec ts . Many a rguments s tand

in ne e d o f f u r the r da bo r a t ion a nd c l a r i f i c a t ion . One migh t me n t ion s t i l l

ness . One might ca l l th i s the inner f ace . But the t r ea tment of the problem
