Message from the president
Message from the director
I invite you to take the time to learn about the Stevens Center. The first step may be taking time to read this publi-cation.
The next step might be examining how you relate to indi-viduals that have a long-term disability. Is it possible to cre-ate a more welcoming community for them, if only by taking a moment to share a greeting when you see them?
The next step might be to get involved by volunteering at the Stevens Center. Whether you contribute an hour a year, or several hours week, be assured your activity will make a difference.
The Stevens Center is about building new relationships, with equates to new friendships. Each friendship is special. In turn, these friendships make us happy. By building new friendships we are all working to make us a better commu-nity.
Remember, you cannot give to others without benefitting yourself.
J.J. CuffBoard President
The Stevens Center provides support to the community so individu-als who have a developmental disability—a significant intellectual and/or physical disability which began before age 22—can be active and respected members of the community in which they live.
As you read this publication, learn about some of the things the Ste-vens Center does to promote successful inclusion. Note how many of our programs and services benefit the entire community. For example:
• Stepping Stones Children Center provides quality child care for all children from birth through kindergarten. It is also an NC Pre-K site. Having a disability is not required.
• Summer camps are open to individuals three and older. Having a disability is not required.
• Recreation programs, such as First Friday Family Night, the spring bowling league, and wintertime movies nights are all open to the entire community.
• Rideability is an affordable evening and weekend transportation option for people with any kind of disability, including those that are age-related.
If you truly believe that all persons were created equal and should be treated equal, then get involved in the Stevens Center. Enroll in a program, or become a volunteer. Help to make your community the best place for any person to live.

T hrough a series of cir-cumstances, Bryan Rives lives with his Aunt, Fran
Gardner. She doesn’t consider it a burden, but it is a respon-sibility. Connections makes it easier for both of them.
“My life could be more dif-ficult because Bryan is not a morning person, and wants to sleep in,” said Gardner. “I would be more housebound. Connections gives Bryan a reason to get up, and gives me time to do what I need to get done.”
“Once Bryan gets out the door, I see his attitude change,” Gardner continued. “He comes home in a good mood, takes time to talk to the COLTS driver that takes him to and from the Stevens Center. When he gets in the house, we have a nice conversation on what he did that day.”
Bryan’s story highlights sev-eral of the purposes of Con-nections.
First, Connections is designed to be an affordable option for individuals that do not receive other publicly funded services such as NC Innovations, day program or
sheltered workshop. Connec-tions is a private-pay program. Individuals pay $200 per month for about 100 hours of programming, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thurs-day.
Second, Connections pro-vides families with time to do the things important to them, without the additional respon-sibility of working around the needs of the family member who has a developmental dis-ability.
Third, Connections gives the Connections’ participant a schedule and reason for start-ing their day early. Many of the families note that before Connections, the participant was much more sedentary and would not want to get up in the morning.
Fourth, Connections is structured to help the partici-pant increase independence. For example, on a weekly basis Bryan volunteers at his church to assist other in the weekly cleaning. Initially, staff would accompany Bryan, assisting him to learn how to use COLTS independently, and how to complete different
cleaning assignments. Within a few weeks Bryan was mak-ing the whole excursion with-out staff assistance. Any help he now needs is provided by the other church members that are volunteering at the same time.
Fourth, Connections is designed to meet the human need for connection to other people. This is accomplished through relationships that develop among individuals in the program. More important-ly, the steady flow of volun-teers coming into the program, and the volunteer work done by Connections in the commu-nity, increase exposure to the real world.
To be part of Connections, an individual must have inde-pendent care skills and partici-pate in an environment that provides peripheral supervi-sion with a ratio of one staff to nine participants. Further, the program is designed for individuals that, within two years, will be volunteering or working in the community without fulltime staff support. For more information, call our office.

CONNECTIONS
Our national CARF accreditation is evidence that our organization strives to improve efficiency, fiscal health, and service delivery, creating a foundation for continuous quality improvement and consumer satisfaction. This assures the persons we serve, and their families, that our services are focused on their unique needs. Community-Based Support (NC Innovations and IPRS) and employment (WINNERs) services of the Stevens Center are accredited by CARF.
Bryan Rives volunteers weekly
N C Innovations, which several years ago replaced CAP ser-
vices, is a Medicaid-funded program throughout North Carolina. NC Innovations provides in-home and com-munity-based support to indi-viduals of all ages who have a developmental disability.
Once a person qualifies for services, the individual or their family chooses a service pro-vider. Currently, 45 individuals in Lee, Harnett and Moore Counties receive their services through the Stevens Center.
NC Innovations helps indi-viduals maintain their homes in the community and meet their daily personal care and safety needs. The services are designed to offer informed choice and flexibility so that people may live successfully with the support appropri-ate to their level of need and according to their personal preferences. Support services range from a few hours per week to twelve hours per day.
According to the National Council on Disability (ncd.gov) and based on the most recent data available (2009), in North Carolina the average annual cost of living in a State institu-tion is $175,565. That com-pares to an average annual cost of $45,697 to provide NC Innovations services. More importantly, NC Innovations services provides the support an individual needs to be an active and included part of the community where they live.
Call Roger Bailey at 919-776-4048 for more information on receiving NC Innovations services through the Stevens Center.

NC INNOVATIONS
“We’ve been with the Stevens Center since it opened, and we cannot imagine going anywhere else. The Stevens Center has made my daughter’s life a whole lot better, and my life also because I know she is loved and she is taken care of. Thank you, Stevens Center, for a job well done.”
— Jan R.
Because of the support these last seven years, my son now has the tools to support himself through the easy stuff. You were in the trenches with us during the most difficult times. You all know we could not have survived these seven years without your support. My love a gratitude to you for years to come! — Chris G.

For many, if they can land a job, they will be a trustwor-thy employee. Beth Bray’s
job is to help people clear those hurdles. As Employment Specialist, she help job seekers look for, find and maintain employ-ment.
The WINNERs pro-gram primarily assists individuals who have been referred through a contract with Vocational Rehabilitation. The pro-cess is straight forward.
1. An individual contacts the Sanford office of NC Vocational Rehabilitation, at 919-775-2247.
Vocational Rehabilitation evaluates whether the individual qualifies for VR services.
2. If the individual qualifies for VR services, a counselor works with the individu-al to develop a personal-ized vocational plan.
3. Part of the voca-tional plan may be to refer the individual to an outside agency to assist in finding appropri-ate employment. If the decision is to refer the
individual to the Stevens Center, Beth Bray begins assisting the individual, whom we call a job seeker.
4. Bray works with the job seeker to develop a more refined vocational plan. The plan helps the job seeker understand their respon-sibility in assisting with their job search.
5. Bray helps the job seeker identify leads, complete job ap-plications and interview success-fully. She also assists employers in identifying tax credits and training funds that may be available.
6. After the job seeker lands a job, Bray serves as a liaison be-tween the individual and employer, to assure that the new employee develops the skills needed for the position.
