• Spent many summers in Northern Michigan hunting and fishing

• Wrote short stories for his high school newspaper

• Worked as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in Italy

• Wounded by mortar and spent time recovering in Italy

• This generation of writers living in Europe in the 1920’s were coined as the “Lost Generation”
