Welcome to the third issue of Hemel Pulse magazine and seasons greeting to one and all!

We can’t believe that Christmas and the end of 2012 are here already - and what a year it’s been! The team here have never been prouder to be Hemel people and can’t believe how many wonderful achievements our town boasted over the last 12 months. Take a look at our end of year report on page 7, including an exclusive interview with MP Mike Penning. We also want to hear from our wonderful readers - please get in touch to tell us your best bits from 2012!

It’s also been an amazing year for us here at the magazine. We can’t believe how far we’ve come since launching the first issue of Select Local in July. We’re so happy with where we’ve ended up after our re-brand and are looking forward to getting even bigger and better next year! As this year draws to a close we’re saying a fond farewell to our advertising co-ordinator Anthony who will be moving on to pursue other projects. We’ve loved having him on board and although it’s sad to say goodbye we wish him the very best!

We’ve now welcomed a new face into the fold, and hope you’ll join us in saying a big hello to Warren Johnson. We’re so excited to be teaming up with Warren because he’s as passionate about the community as we are. His Hemel News Facebook and Twitter pages have been going strong for 10 months now and we think he’s going to be an amazing addition to the family! On 15 November 2012, voters elected Mr David Lloyd to serve until May 2016 as Hertfordshire’s first Police and Crime Commis-sioner (PCC). Conservative Coun-cillor Lloyd, was voted ahead of Labours Ms Sherma Batson, UKIP’s Ms Marion Ann Mason and Mr Christopher Townsend of the Liberal Democrats.

Mr Lloyd will now be responsible for the way policing is delivered in the county. Duties will including deciding how funding related to policing and crime reduction is allocated and, in consultation with the Chief Constable, setting the strategic direction and objectives of the force through their Police and Crime Plan.

Despite information packs being delivered all over the Borough, the turnout for voting was only 13.74% in Dacorum. When the Council announced the result on their Facebook page earlier in November some people left comments to voice their disappointment at the result and the cost involved in the cam-paign.

A local man was sentenced to a three year community order after pleading guilty to a sexual assault on a 17 year old girl. Wheel-chair bound Anthony Styles, 46, was also found to have over 300 indecent images of children on his computer.

Simon Sterling, prosecuting at St. Albans crown court described how, just after Christmas 2010, Styles took advantage of the teenager when she was upset. He said “The defendant sought to comfort her and put his right hand on her chest and under her bra”. He’d also tried to kiss and “grab” her.

It was on January 23rd last year that the same victim and her boyfriend discovered indecent images on Styles’ laptop. Mr Sterling revealed that, “she felt consider-able alarm and distress and was in shock and was tearful.”

After the police were called, they questioned Styles and seized his computer and laptop for examination. Of a total of 307 images, 306 were found to be at Level 1, the least serious of five levels. The last was at Level 2.

Judge Stephen Warner told Styles: “You assaulted the victim when she was partic-ularly vulnerable and distressed.” He went on to say: “The images may not be the most serious but as with all indecent images of children they involved the ex-ploitation and abuse of young children for the gratification of people like you, who provide the market for this sort of material.”

Styles, of Manan Close, was described by his defence barrister Will Noble as having suffered from medical problems.

Penning’s end of year review

Helen Lehrle owner and manager and the therapists from The Acorn Wellbeing Centre went off to Milton Keynes on 9th November to massage the runners who raised funds for the British Legion, James and 14 more runners have raised over £23.000 for the British Legion nationally and locally. On 10th November the men ended at the lo-cal rugby club where Helen Lehrle (manager and therapist) and Karen Brown (sports therapist) were waiting along with two more therapists, they went from there in the town centre at 2pm, Helen and the team treated them with massages and sports injury treatments, to help with injuries they obtained, these included stress to muscles and loss of toe nails!

Helen said “we were in the remembrance parade with them and alongside the family members of the 21 year old RAF man Ryan Tomlin who lost his life in February. It is very moving and I feel honoured to have taken part”. At 11am at St Johns Church Boxmoor the runners and Helen attended the gathering of many ser-vicemen and women to pay tribute.

James Allsopp is a serving marine and his pals who took on a 117-mile fundraising run over four days are still recovering from the ordeal. The group of 14 men, called Hemel 100 Milers, set off from the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire on

the Wednesday and arrived back in Hemel Hempstead on Saturday 10th November.

Marine medic James Allsopp, 28, who came up with the idea and led the team, said: “It was horrible. It was very hard. A lot harder than I think the guys thought it would be.”Some of the team were running for up to eight hours a day to complete the feat and several suffered stress fractures and other injuries along the way.

The team was made up of Barry Thorn, Michael Booth, Charles Scott, Danny Smith, Lee Smith, Daniel Forder, Gareth Carder, Matthew Kemp, Nini Massa, Robbie Hull, Sam Ait-ken, Paul Vigor and Samuel Makepeace.

They were welcomed home by crowds of

supporters along with Mayor of Dacorum Bert Chapman and MP Mike Penning at the bandstand in Marlowes Hemel Hempstead.

Gardeners are usually well equipped. Any gifts, especially with more novelty than practical value, risk lying unused in the shed or being consigned to the charity shop bag. The exception is if hints are dropped. Aunty mentioned she wants a garden kneeler, so I know what to buy her (it’s OK, I know my secret’s safe with you as she isn’t local and doesn’t use a computer, anyone spilling the beans before the Big Day will be reported to Santa!).

Head Gardener is always pleased to receive a good pair of secateurs. Best quality tools are made of finest steel and stay sharp longer. Other tools, like garden knives, are also useful, as are pouches to store these in (stopping holes in pockets through which they get lost).

An assortment of seeds might be carefully chosen to give something a little more unusual to grow (but ensure there are no special growing requirements that can’t be met – read the back of the packet before buying).

Head Gardener loves to be pampered after spending the day working in patron’s gardens. Spending time with hands in cold damp soil can ruin skin, so hand creams, moisturisers or other cosmetics help combat these effects. Gardening is also physical, so muscle rubs or relaxing bath salts are also good.

Clothing for keeping warm and protecting from the elements is a firm favourite of the Head Gardener at this time of year when he’s hard at work in his customer’s gardens.Still stumped? If your Head Gardener has a favourite tipple they’re fond of after a day in the garden you could get that for them - tea, coffee, or perhaps something stronger? If you choose something stronger just be sure it doesn’t become a secret stash in the Garden Shed like the infamous home-made sherry featured in the 1980’s sitcom “No Place Like home”!

Pupils from the Beaumont School in St Albans and a Fire Station Crew from Borehamwood got their hands dirty by removing surface weeds from the out-side play area access path at KIDS based in Aldenham Country Park.

The pupils who took part wish to contribute further by raising funds at their Xmas Fayre to support the purchase of a new trike for the users to the KIDS adventure playground.

The fire station crews also have good intentions to do more of the same again to support a worthy resource in their local community.

Top Tips To Keep Fit This Christmas

Christmas. It’s the time to enjoy time off work, lovely dinners, seeing the family, house parties and work parties which always include a fare few drinks. This in mind, fitness usually takes a back seat. Which can result in putting on some holiday weight, which when we hit the gym again in January we find it 10x harder to get motivated and to burn that excess weight. But here are some tips to keep in mind for over Christmas to keep that holiday weight off.

1. HAVE A BITE – Before attending your Christmas work/house party have a bite to eat before leaving. This will stop you from mindless nibbling whilst at the party.

2. EARLY BIRD - Whilst Christmas is here and you have some time off, why not hit the gym? At this time of year gyms tend to be emptier, if not a mem-ber of a gym join some fitness classes in your local area.

3. BE AWARE OF DRINK - Just be aware on how much you drink, we’re not saying don’t go out and not drink, but just be aware what you drink and how much. Alcohol is an easy way to add excess calories.

4. FAMILY FUN - Get on the interac-tive games, using the wii, ps3 or xbox connect to burn some extra calories plus having a laugh with the family.

5. DONT EAT A MOUNTAIN – this time of the year we all love the Christ-mas dinner and all the snacks. However don’t let your eyes be bigger than your

belly. Remember stop eating when you feel full.

6. DAY ADVENTURES – Christmas is full of wonderful things to do. Many Christmas fairs open, ice skating becomes available and even walking around the shops and looking at the decorations and lights become enjoy-able. These days out can have a good impact on your health.

7. PACK A SNACK – When going on day out, pack a healthy snack. It bene-fits your health and your wallet.

8. BE REALISTIC – If you have set yourself a dietary goal or fitness goal this Christmas. CONGRATS. However are your sure this is a goal that you can fulfil? Be realistic with your goal setting, then you will find it easier to cope with, whilst getting results and feeling good that your reaching your target.Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year!

Working to eliminate racism in football

Hemel Town Centre hosted the ‘Kick It Out’ football event on October 20th, aimed at combating racism within the sport. On the day plenty of budding football stars at-tended, including representatives from the Hemel Islamic Academy, Global Pindd and local mosque.

The youngsters got the chance to see free-style footballers showing off their skills, take part in Panna football exhibitions and sign up for football coaching taster sessions at Sportspace.

Funding was provided by Councillor William Wyatt-Lowe, who donated £750 from his locality budget. He said, “I am delighted

that the organisation is encouraging children from ethnic backgrounds to take part in football with a view to forming a mixed local league. I am delighted to be able to support this initiative.”

Chaulden Community Association gets a modern makeover

Hemel County Councillor Terry Douris has allocated £912 from his locality budget to the Chaulden Neighbourhood Association. The as-sociation runs clubs and classes for children of all ages and is run from a community centre.

Cllr Douris’ funding will be used to buy new tables and a trolley for the centre, helping to modernise the centre and to benefit the bingo group and private hirers.

“I am delighted to help Chaulden Neighbour-hood Association in providing new tables for the community centre” said Councillor Terry Douris. “Not only will they replace their old ones but will also to provide banqueting tables which will make the venue more attractive to potential customers for a wider range of events”

HCC takes BT to court over street works!

Hertfordshire County Council has successfully prosecuted British Telecommunications PLC (BT) for poor and unacceptable working practices when undertaking street works.

The hearing at Watford Magistrates Court on 13 November 2012, saw BT plead guilty to five breaches of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) and three breaches of the Highways Act 1980. These included failure to provide the correct notice and details of street works, closing roads without authorisation and failing to cooperate with the county council as highway authority. They had also previously pleaded guilty to a further twelve breaches of the NRSWA.

The offences related to works carried out by BT at Red Lion Lane, Great Gaddesden, in Jan-uary and February 2012; at Station Road, Sawbridgeworth, in February 2012; and at Bridge Road East, Welwyn Garden City, in February 2012.

BT were hit with a fine of £44,650 plus a £15 victim surcharge for the total of twenty offenc-es. Hertfordshire County Council were awarded full costs of £24,998.75. This amounted to a total sum of nearly £70,000.

A new permit scheme to give Hertfordshire County Council more control over how and when road works can be completed on roads across the county has recently been launched.

Water Gardens Get Winter Makeover

Volunteers from our town centre clubbed together on November 12th for a winter plant out in the Water Gar-dens. Workers from Riverside Shopping Centre, Marlowes Shopping Centre, Steria, Domino’s Pizza and the Friends of the Water Gardens joined forces with Dacorum Borough Council’s Clean, Safe and Green team, with fantastic results.

said, “The response we received from the local community and businesses was fantastic, it really showed how passionate people are for their local en-vironment and surroundings. The group worked flat out for two hours, planting shrubs and putting mulch on the flower beds. We would like to thank the volun-teers for their time and effort.”

Well what a month it’s been for the Hor-nets! A great run of games has now seen them unbeaten throughout November. Zola’s Yellow Army took on Leicester at home on the 3rd, beating them 2-1 after a red card left Leicester with ten men. Next, Watford played host to Milwall on the 6th, a game which ended in a 0-0 draw. Watford travelled to Leeds on Saturday the 10th. The Hornet’s dominated the home side with 65% possession and a whopping 6 goals. Leeds did manage to get one in the back of the net, but were plagued with bad luck throughout the game. After having a player sent off, they ended up with only 9 men by the final whistle, losing a player to injury after already making the maximum 3 substitutions. Finally, it was Wolves at home on the 17th and Watford managed an impressive 2-1 defeat after yet another red card for the away team. All in all it’s been a great run for the boys so far and manager GIANFRANCO ZOLA has described the attitude of his players as “very impressive”. Here’s hoping his players can carry on the momentum right up to Christmas and beyond! Dacorum Borough Council is continuing its work to promote responsi-ble pet ownership by introducing weekly micro-chipping surgeries for dogs.

Sarah Lewis, Dog Warden says, “As well as the legal requirement that dogs wear identification like a disc, micro-chipping your dog can help you to protect it. If your dog is lost or stolen, the micro-chip can help dog wardens and vets to trace you and reunite you with your dog.”

Earlier this year, the Council’s Housing service introduced its new Pet Policy which aims to help tenants to look after their pets and intro-duces compulsory micro-chipping for dogs owned by council tenants.

The weekly surgery takes place every Tuesday from 10-11am at Hemel Hempstead Civic Centre. The service is free to council tenants and costs £10 for residents who are not tenants.
