    Program Description

    As a Mayo Fellow, you will have access to a trainingexperience that is both broad and highly specialized.

    All programs are designed to effectively prepare youfor a career in Hematology-Oncology.

    Many staff hematologists and oncologists serve astutors, and their various backgrounds offer a richdiversity of clinical expertise.

    Mayos Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Programconsists of 18 months of clinical hematology, 18months of clinical oncology and 12 months ofresearch.

    Clinical Laboratory RotationsEarly in the program, you will spend four monthsgaining hands-on bench research experience. In the Hematology Morphology Laboratory, your

    training will emphasize the basic morphology ofperipheral blood smears and bone marrowaspirations. You will gain experience incytochemistry, automated hematology, red cellenzymology and hemoglobinopathies.

    In the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory, you willgain experience in apheresis; the complications,work-ups and management of transfusions; HLAtyping; crossmatching; blood components;immunohematology; and other aspects oftransfusion medicine.

    In the Coagulation Laboratory, you will learn aboutcoagulation theory and testing and will have anopportunity to gain experience in factor assays.

    In the Special Protein Laboratory, you will focus onserum protein electrophoresis, immunodiffusion,immunoelectrophoresis, immunofixation,cryoglobulins and serum viscosity.

    Special Hematology ClinicsAssignments to the special hematology clinics willgive you experience in treating new and follow-uppatients with various hematologic diseases such aslymphoma, anemia, myeloproliferative diseases,chronic leukemias and benign hematologic diseasessuch as cytopenias.

    Pediatric Hematology-OncologyDuring the one-month pediatric hematology-oncology rotation, you will be involved in themanagement of patients 16 years old or younger whohave either benign or malignant hematologicdiseases. You will learn the differences in themanifestations and management of hematologicdisease in children versus adults.

    ElectivesWith the program directors approval, you can spenda month during your second or third year gainingadditional experience in clinical hematology research.

    Bone Marrow TransplantationDuring your rotation at the Bone MarrowTransplantation Service, you will manage patientsundergoing allogeneic, autologous or peripheralblood stem cell transplants. You also will evaluate,select and schedule new patients for transplantation.You will gain experience harvesting bone marrowtransplants, infusing peripheral stem and cell bonemarrow, and managing graft-versus-host diseases.You will be responsible for outpatient evaluationsand the care of hospitalized patients.

    Consultation ServiceYour consultation service rotation will give youexperience treating a broad range of benign andmalignant hematologic and oncologic disorders.These patients are referred from the general andsubspecialty services at Saint Marys and RochesterMethodist hospitals.

    The divisions of hematology and medical oncologymaintain: Two general hematology inpatient services One general oncology inpatient service One bone marrow transplantation inpatient service

    for allogeneic, syngeneic and autologoustransplantation

    Three consultation services

    Each of the four inpatient services has an average of15 patients each day. Each of the three consultingservices has approximately 900 patient visits per year.

    Outpatient (Hematology)In the outpatient clinic, you will have considerableautonomy as you evaluate new patients and providelongitudinal care for others. You will treat patientswho have solid tumors, hematologic malignancies ornonmalignant hematologic disorders. You also willtreat their general internal medicine problems. Yourresponsibilities will include correspondence withreferring physicians.

    Hospital Hematology ServiceYou will serve as the first assistant on all hospitalservices and work closely with the attendingconsultant. Together, you will be responsible forsupervising patient care and for teaching medicalstudents and internal medicine residents takingrotations on these services. In addition, you will haveample time to provide outpatient longitudinal care.

    During this rotation, you will gain: An appreciation of the biological variability of

    different diseases An understanding of drug pharmacokinetics, drug

    toxicities and complications of therapy An understanding of the natural history and

    complications of treated and untreated disorders

    Organ SystemsAt the beginning of your oncology training, you willcomplete rotations in general oncology, pulmonaryoncology, gastrointestinal oncology, genitourinaryoncology, gynecologic oncology and neuro-oncology.You will gain experience managing the treatment ofmalignancies in these specific organ systems whileworking directly with a staff member who has specialexpertise in one of these areas.

    Surgical PathologyDuring this rotation, you will gain experience in grosspathology, frozen section appearance, permanentpathological sections and immunostaining. You willwork full time with staff pathologists and surgicalpathology fellows in the pathology laboratory.

    Radiation OncologyWhile working with staff radiation oncologists, youwill learn about the fundamental principles ofradiation therapy, treatment planning and the organ-specific toxicities of radiotherapy.

    Outpatient (Oncology)In the outpatient setting, you will serve as theprimary oncologist for patients with all types of solidtumors.

    Hospital General OncologyDuring this rotation, you will supervise internalmedicine residents, conduct teaching sessions,organize the inpatient service, and communicate withreferring physicians when necessary. You also willwrite inpatient chemotherapy orders and sup
