Hematite is found with other minerals at underwater vents in the Pacific Ocean. This one is a striking example of the iron oxide mineral hematite (red) intergrown with the sulfate mineral barite (white) and the copper sulfide mineral chalcopyrite (yellow-green).

Hematite is in the red pipestone quarried at Pipestone National Monument. The pipestone is a weakly metamorphosed

claystone between layers of the pink Sioux Quartzite. Pipestone, and

especially this red pipestone, is sacred to Native American peoples.
