Our main fundraising event, the Wheelchair Classic, took place on Thursday 13th June. We were joined by the Man-chester United legends Frank Stapleton, Stuart Pearson and Jeff Wealands who together with author David Wilson played in the golf tourna-ment and presented the wheelchairs to 5 excited youngsters.

Although the weather was not good, a great day was had by all with 164 competitors playing in the golf competition.

In the evening our Cap-tains, Brian Prince and Jarmila Lee together with our legendary guests and sponsor Chris Lind-ley presented wheel-chairs to Aaron Lambert from Northwich, Liam O’Neil from Beswick Manchester, Joe Blease from Middlewich, Jason

Brotherton from Barnton Northwich and Courtney Taylor-Hayhurst from Widnes.

This was followed by the presentation of the tro-phies to the winners of the competitions.

The charity auction in the evening was a very lively affair run by Kieran McCabe from the Forest Hills Hotel, Frodsham ably assisted by Steve Cunniffe from Helsby.

The Spring Dance was held on 16th March. The Flaxmere Ceilidh Band provided the entertain-ment for a very enjoy-able evening where the dress, the food, the decorations and the

dancing followed the Irish theme. By the end of the evening everyone, even the President, was on the floor joining in the Ceilidh.

We presented our 309th Powered Wheelchair to

Angel Haydn aged 11 from Winsford who is severely disabled and attends the Russett School in Weaverham. She came with her Nan Linda, who looks after her, and her Dad David.

Golf Tournament

The sun shone and the course was in superb condition which led to some great scores in the golf competition.

The winning team was -

Brian Stott, Marcus Lightfoot and Neil Johnson from Helsby with Bryan Kramer from MEGA.

The runners up were -

Dave Harries, Paul Crombie, Neil Graham and Reg Bowden (MEGA).

We were pleased to see that visitors to the club went away with the prizes for nearest the pin and nearest the line; Richard Brown from Warrington GC and Paul Staunton (MEGA).

We have welcomed Paul to the club for a number of years as the organizer of the MEGA players but Richard is a new supporter of the Appeal joining us at events for just 12 months. We hope to see him on future occasions.

A great time was had by all and the day raised £2,000 for the Appeal.

MEGA Day—A Right Royle Celebration

On 7th August, Helsby Golf Club hosted the supporters of the PWA who were joined for the 12th year running by members of MEGA (Merseyside Entertainers Golf As-sociation) for a fun day of golf fol-lowed by an evening of entertain-ment provided by the stars of MEGA .

Special guest Ricky Tomlinson of ‘The Royle Family’ fame helped our Captains, Brian Prince and Jarmila Lee, present wheelchairs to Jordan Duke from Prenton and Connor Webb from Widnes, bringing the total number of chairs donated over the last 30 years to 316.

Jordan has just left school and is hoping to take up an opportunity offered by Everton FC as an ap-prentice learning how to be a coach for disabled people. His new chair will give him the freedom and inde-pendence to be able to do this.

Connor is also sports mad and last year won the Young Sportsperson of the Year for Widnes which was presented at the Rugby Ground.

Ricky then compered a superb evening of laughter and music with the renowned comedian Mick Miller, vocalist and guitarist Gary Murphy and singer Joe Wall. The music duo the Chimes rounded off the evening with music to dance to.

The Merseyside Electrical Traders Association holds a charity golf tournament each year. They have been kind enough to donate the proceeds of the event to the PWA for the last few years and this year we received a cheque for £3,000. Our thanks go to Roddy Snedden of Electrod UK and the other members of the Association for their generous support.

The Moore Foundation is a charitable trust set up by Moore Finance of Warrington to provide financial support and practical relief to local children’s charities and worthy causes. The PWA has been the recipient of support from the Trust and in July a fur-ther cheque for £2,500 was presented to Alan Lee, Chairman by Nigel Garner, Chair-man of the Foundation at their annual charity golf tournament held at Warrington GC. We would like to thank Nigel & his team for their continued support.

The Aqueduct Marina at Church Minshall held their annual Boaters Bash and Family Fun Day on 20th & 21st July. Each year the owners, Robert and Andrea Parton, choose a different charity to support over the weekend. This year Anya and Geoff Harris rec-ommended the Powered Wheelchair Appeal as we had presented a chair to their son James in 2002. They now have a narrowboat at the Marina, which has been adapted to enable James to spend time on board in his wheelchair. They had a great weekend in the sunshine and raised £1,009.50 for our Appeal. Our thanks go to all those in-volved.

Our thanks also go to

Steve Jervis and the staff at DHL in Preston Brook who raised £247.50 by running raffles in the offices. A further £247.50 was received from the DHL UK Foundation through their Match It! Programme which matches the fundraising efforts of their em-ployees.

The Corporate Division of the NatWest Bank based in Warrington for their cheque for £250 which was presented to Helsby Golf Club Captains, Brian Prince and Jarmila Lee, by Alex Walters at the Wheelchair Classic in June.

Many congratulations go to Gareth Dyson who completed the 3 Peaks Challenge in Wales in July in the great time of 12 hours, raising over £100 for the Appeal.
